Aripo residents cut off by an impassable road, hope to win when the UNC wins as their village school has been closed with the ruined roadway.
Transcript
00:00Within the past three days, Aripu residents have been cut off from their homes.
00:05James Valentine of the Aripu Heights Community Council says the excessive rain has caused a part of the roadway to be impassable.
00:13We in Aripu here for the longest while. We haven't got anything done on Aripu Road.
00:20And we have at least 87% of the villagers have to travel out of Aripu to go to work.
00:29We have about 65% of the children have to go to school outside.
00:35Their primary school located within the village has been closed for the past three days as staffers cannot access the school.
00:42We have no teacher inside there.
00:44And we are trying to get this now done so that we could get the children education, which is very important to us as villagers.
00:55The children education is very important.
00:58But they have national tests next week, Wednesday.
01:01The roads have been bad for the past seven years.
01:04But they say waterworks and incessant rains have exacerbated their situation.
01:10This is a very big chance to pass here to get out.
01:14But this is not the only thing we really want the whole road fixed.
01:22Because as you guys come up, you can see that the road is very bad.
01:28Our MP is Penny Beckles.
01:31And how long have you brought this to her attention?
01:32Well, she's been, to be honest here, that Beckles have this road highlighted to be pitched.
01:43Mr. Valentine says he was told that waterworks has to be completed before the road paving works can be done.
01:50Their MP, Penelope Beckles, he says, has been there as recently as this morning and committed to raising the matter in parliament tomorrow.
01:59Ms. Valentine tells us the state of the road and other community issues would have led to the PNM experiencing a decline in support within this polling division,
02:09although the PNM won the constituency overall.
02:14The residents hope they will win when the UNC wins as claimed in the party's election slogan.
