Despite opposition calls for the firing of National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said on Monday, the National Security Minister remains in position. Dr. Rowley spoke following the Parliamentary Caucus Retreat in Tobago. More in this Elizabeth Williams report.

00:00I am not going to respond to the opposition on who should or should not be fired.
00:06A person who holds an office in a cabinet, in a government that has the authority to be government,
00:13and a prime minister makes appointment to the cabinet.
00:15The opposition's hatred for people is not part of my management portfolio.
00:22The prime minister said he would not entertain individual attacks against the Minister of National Security.
00:30The opposition's position that our crime problem is our Fitzgerald Highlands problem, I don't subscribe to that.
00:37Because I know they don't view me in any way different to the way they view Fitzgerald Highlands.
00:42I mean, as a matter of fact, I think they spend more time saying that I should go.
00:47So if that is all the opposition can contribute to the national debate, I've said to you all before,
00:52that they are pathetic. They have nothing to contribute.
00:55Dr. Rowley said he would not engage the persecution of any government minister.
01:01What is it about Fitzgerald Highlands that every...
01:04Fitzgerald Highlands works in the cabinet, he's working for the people of Trinidad and Tobago,
01:09and the fact that they don't agree, the system allows them not to agree.
01:16But this apparent persecution, I'm not in that.
01:20Dr. Rowley has this message for the opposition leader, Kamala Prasad Bissessa.
01:25I want to remind you all, the very first thing I did when I was opposition leader,
01:32was to warn Mrs. Kamala Prasad Bissessa not to put Jack Warner in our cabinet,
01:38because he will embarrass the country.
01:40And what did she do then?
01:42Did she appoint him to the cabinet?
01:44And did she make him acting prime minister in the country, until he embarrassed the country?
01:48So what is this relentless Fitzgerald Highlands story?
01:52We are not in that. We have serious business to attend to.
