00:00It was at this house perched on a hill at St. Rose Street, Guapo, that police officers
00:05executed a warrant for arms and ammunition this morning when the drama unfolded that
00:10left 25-year-old Police Constable Krishna Banaha dead.
00:15ACP Wayne Meister said officers won an anti-crime exercise in the South Western Division and
00:21went to that house around 4.45am.
00:24While officers were making their way onto the premises, PC Banaha, who was standing
00:28outside near a police vehicle, observed two suspects fleeing the premises via another
00:33route and gave chase.
00:35Investigators say that during the chase, the two suspects fired shots at the constable
00:40who shot back hitting both suspects.
00:42However, Banaha was also shot by the suspects.
00:46One of the suspects, later identified as Hakeem Joseph, was found dead, while the other suspect
00:51momentarily escaped but was later held by police officers who seized the firearm he
00:56had in his possession.
00:58Banaha's colleagues rushed him to the Point Forty General Hospital but he died around
01:025.20am.
01:03Sources say he had been shot in the upper body.
01:07ACP Meister said that Banaha was attached to the Ciparia CID and offered his deepest
01:12sympathies to his family but said his good work would not be forgotten.
01:17He had four years service, he was attached to the Ciparia CID, so for the past four years
01:22he will have been in the South Western Division and a very, very, very dedicated and motivated
01:28officer to the Triandamika Police Service.
01:31There were claims by relatives of one of the suspects that a 15-year-old who was in the
01:35house was beaten by police officers who also stood on his back.
01:39ACP Meister said that a shooting of the suspect and this matter will be investigated thoroughly.
01:45An official investigation has been launched into this matter because the police involved
01:51standing operation procedures will tell us that a First Division officer has been appointed
01:56to investigate this matter and once we have information going forward we will apprise
01:59members of the public.
02:01He encouraged police officers to stay the course as the country continues to battle
02:04criminal elements.
02:06Police officers leave their home every single day, not sure they will return home to their
02:10families and as we can see it's evident that it's very dangerous outside here.
02:14You know, so police officers, we are extra vigilant and we are calling our officers to,
02:20you know, let us support one another.
02:23You understand that there's a loss and we are deeply saddened by this loss but we won't
02:28stop, we won't stop and we won't give up the fight.
