00:00In the United States and tonight, voting continues across America.
00:07Millions of Americans have already cast their votes, as the most recent polls show a tight
00:12race between Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and Republican nominee and former
00:17President Donald Trump.
00:19Joining us live now from New York City is Katie Honan.
00:22Katie's a reporter with The City, and she's been following Election Day developments all
00:27day.
00:28Good evening, Katie, and thank you for joining us.
00:29Thanks for having me.
00:30Well, Katie, what has voting been like in New York City today in terms of the turnout,
00:37and were there any major problems?
00:40We've had a huge turnout today in New York City.
00:42We also had about two weeks of early voting, but there were still long lines at the polls.
00:46There were some issues with ballot machines and scanners, but from what we've heard, you
00:52know, even though some people waited online for three hours or so, they still got their
00:56ballots counted.
00:58Well, can you explain to our viewers how the electoral vote system works to determine who
01:03becomes the President of the United States?
01:05Yeah.
01:06So in the United States, we have the popular vote, which is just the number of people who
01:12vote for a certain candidate, but we also have the Electoral College.
01:15That's where the majority of states, you see who your state voted the most for, and then
01:20those votes, individual votes, and it's based on the number of, based on the population,
01:25those go towards the candidate.
01:27And I know it's sort of controversial.
01:29It's been here as long as the United States has been in existence, but a lot of people
01:32want to see it abolished because a lot of times a candidate could win the popular vote,
01:36but then certain states end up swaying the final results with the Electoral College.
01:42So based on what you've observed during this campaign season, what are some of the important
01:47issues for voters in this year's election?
01:50Well, definitely the economy in the United States.
01:54Inflation has been up.
01:55People, just the cost of living has really risen like it has across the world.
01:59We'll see concerns about reproductive rights.
02:01That was Kamala Harris's big issue for women and things like that.
02:05But I think for a lot of people, it's the question of affordability and how they'll
02:10continue to provide for their families, but then also the question of who they feel the
02:13most safe with as they continue to try to raise their families and then actually have
02:18a great time here in the United States.
02:24Unfortunately, a lot of people feel they've suffered for whatever reason, especially since
02:28the COVID pandemic.
02:29So your thoughts as a journalist on the campaigns by Harris and Trump?
02:36I think, look, what we saw with former President Trump is what we've seen in his previous elections.
02:42It's a lot of hatred and a lot of anger and a lot of fear, but on the other hand, I think
02:46with Vice President Kamala Harris, she joined the race late in the year after President
02:51Biden stepped down.
02:53There's been criticisms of her not having enough of a policy idea beyond reproductive
02:58rights.
02:59A lot of people don't know where she stands on things.
03:01And I think that's what's driving people to the polls, their views on the personalities
03:06of the two candidates.
03:08They're really neck and neck at this point.
03:09All the polls show them very, very close.
03:11So we'll see.
03:12I don't even know if we'll know tonight who the ultimate winner is.
03:15Well, Katie, I know it's going to be a long night for you and a hectic few days ahead.
03:19So thank you so much for joining us tonight.
03:22Thank you for having me.
