Citizens across the country went to the polls to exercise one of the most fundamental rights in a democracy, the right to vote.
It was the culmination of an intense six weeks for PNM Candidate for St Ann's West and incumbent Prime Minister Stuart Young and Political Leader of the PNM and Former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley.
More from Nicole M Romany and Cameraman Shiva Parasram.
00:00This morning, MP Stuart Young cast his ballot at the International School in the Dirk Martin West constituency.
00:08Taking part in this crucial democratic exercise, he joined thousands of citizens in affirming the importance of participation in the electoral process.
00:19Speaking with media, he said there was a good turnout at his polling station.
00:23The long line indicates to me, and it's difficult to tell, but at this stage that there is quite a lot of interest in this year's general election, and I read that as a very good sign.
00:34What it indicated to me is that democracy is very alive and well, and that persons are taking their civic duty quite seriously on this occasion.
00:43He says hard work was put in, and now they wait and see.
00:47The outcome of tonight and the victory for tonight is important for the country. Let's start with that.
00:54And then the party that wins and succeeds, it will obviously also be important to that party.
01:00I expect that we will continue in governance, and I look forward to it. It has been a hard campaign, a short campaign.
01:06I have put forward, I'm quite satisfied that the team has put forward all of our plans for Trinidad and Tobago.
01:12They have that before them, meaning the population and the electorate, and we wait and see.
01:18Former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley also cast his vote at the international school.
01:24He says he is confident in the PNM going forward.
01:27I think the country will do well to go with the rejuvenated arrangements of a new leader in a rejuvenated party.
01:36I'm very proud of the PNM's team that is in place today, going forward into tomorrow.
01:42And I think the PNM will do well, and Trinidad and Tobago will do well in what will continue to be very difficult circumstances, both locally and internationally.
01:52And at the Four Roads Government Primary School, TV6 caught up with candidate for Port of Spain South, Keith Scotland, who grew up in that neighborhood.
02:01He responded to reports of irregularities at some polling stations, but said it will be dealt with.
02:08I have heard certain things, but in Port of Spain South, we have a machinery that is in place to deal with those irregularities.
02:17What I can say is that I canvassed and did the entire of my constituency, including the new polling divisions that I inherited, which is Sue Brintree's Chocolate Alley.
02:31And I feel that I've put the work in. There's more to be done, but I think that I've put the work in.
