The Ministry of Works and Transport Drainage Division is addressing a landslip which took place along Morne Coco Road in Petit Valley on Saturday.
As a result, part of the roadway in the affected area has been cordoned off.
TV6 News spoke to Minister Rohan Sinanan via telephone on Sunday.
Alicia Boucher has the details.
Transcript
00:00The landslip occurred along Moncoco Road in Piti Valley in an area opposite to where Minister
00:05of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan says the drainage division is presently undertaking
00:10construction works in close proximity to the river.
00:14According to Sinanan, about 15 years ago, a retaining wall collapsed, but it was never
00:18rebuilt.
00:19As such, the heavy rainfall took a toll.
00:22So, it's really the dirt that came down.
00:25However, if we leave it like that, it could undermine the road.
00:29So we worked last night, we show up the area, and the contractor who is on site will give
00:36some priority to that side.
00:38Sinanan tells us the construction of a new retaining wall will take place, and it is
00:42to come at no additional cost to the state from what was already allocated to address
00:47the issue in the area.
00:49It will not change the cost of the project because that area was already scoped.
00:55They knew when they were doing the job here that they had to rebuild that wall, but unfortunately
01:02the dirt got away before they reached it, so it's not really an increase in the cost
01:08of the work or anything.
01:09He says the length of the retaining wall being built is 150 metres long to prevent the slippage
01:15into the river that has been occurring.
01:17As for the impact of the landslip on road users, especially motorists?
01:23What happened is because of the closeness to the road, we had to cut off one lane to
01:29make sure that we were able to show it up and everything.
01:34We have to monitor the area.
01:36So the inconvenience to the residents is not like threatening any homes or anything like that.
01:43It's just that I would say about 25 metres, about 20 metres on the road where we'll actually
01:52have a single lane until we can open back the road.
01:55The road is not compromised, but we don't want the road to get compromised.
01:59He notes that the road is heavily traversed, and as such, people using it are being asked
02:04to exercise caution in that area.
02:07The ministry plans on taking steps to ensure that they do.
02:10We will have traffic wardens in the area.
02:14We're trying to put that in place for tomorrow morning.
02:17Sinanan estimates that works on the affected section will be completed in a week's time
02:21or before.
