00:00The newest concern of the TNT Scrap Iron Dealers Association is foreigners who
00:05are now collecting scrap for export. It's a takeover from the local dealers who
00:10usually perform that function and sell to the foreign dealers for export.
00:14Meanwhile, from the perspective of Trade Minister Paula Gopiskun, most scrap
00:19collectors have refused to get registered, stymieing the ability to
00:24regulate the industry. TTC to President Alan Ferguson says these matters were
00:29among those raised at a meeting with both parties on Tuesday at the Trade Ministry.
00:59TTC says if the problem with the foreign dealers persists,
01:06local dealers will be unable to compete. Ferguson states that while there are
01:10separate licenses for collectors, dealers and exporters at present as part of the new system,
01:17prior to 2022 there was one license with scrap dealers used.
01:29Although the ministry previously stated that it has put measures in place for scrap collectors
01:38to get their licenses, Ferguson claims that there are still problems hindering that process,
01:45and this formed part of the discussion.
02:00Ferguson complains that some of the previous problems still persist, including theft.
02:20TTC states that once operated properly, the industry can benefit the country,
02:26including in the generation of foreign exchange.
02:29Meanwhile, the Ministry of Trade says talks with the association factored in preparations
02:34for the proclamation of the remaining Section 3.1 of the Scrap Metal Act 2022,
02:40which governs the licensing of scrap metal collectors.
02:43It adds that there was a commitment by both entities towards continued collaboration
02:49on solving the issues which will allow for the efficient implementation of the new scrap metal
02:54regime. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Randall Carrum and other ministry officials
02:59were also present in the meeting. Alicia Boucher, TV6 News.
