Former sports journalist Selwyn Melville is not pleased that his trademark 'Soca Warriors' is being misused by the media.

Added to that, he's made it clear he's not interested in selling it to the TTFA.

00:00Former sports journalist Sullivan Melville says it's about time people
00:03become educated about a trademark. The name Soka Warriors which applies to the
00:07TNT football team is one which Melville came up with since 1998. He says if the
00:12Trinidad and Tobago Football Association is interested in wanting to have full
00:16ownership of the name he's not budging. So I have been mentioned to some of the
00:20people around the football that they should probably sit and try to
00:26understand what a trademark is and based on that then the conversation
00:31would be probably different or would be a wider range discussion. On that basis
00:37we we have our discussions we're waiting on the Football Association to have a
00:41better idea on how they could actually treat this matter and how they move
00:46forward where Soka Warriors is concerned and that's where we are at this point.
00:51Melville says for those who don't believe he owns the trademark the court
00:55proved otherwise and he has documents on him. He believes many use the name
01:00Soka Warriors willy-nilly failing to realize royalties are involved thus
01:04making it wrong to do so. In radio stations you're hearing all kinds of
01:08things about Soka Warriors and this and that but it's a trademark and it's gonna
01:12come a point now where all parties would have to restrain themselves or refrain
01:19from actually using the name Soka Warriors without authority or permission
01:23given to them to use that name because someone owns it and they have to
01:28respect that. He says trademarks in general have been given very little
01:32respect by people in Trinidad and Tobago and he's making a plea for that to
01:35change. You know people seem to be very lawless at times and they don't give
01:40respect to value for anything and it's about time when they can actually come
01:44and say well okay it's time to have respect for this show the value we are
01:49lawless let's become very more loyal to things in the country and relate to
01:55those matters and that's what I'd like to see happen. Melville says it would be
02:00good to get the TTF's view on the matter moving forward. Vinod Narwani, TV6 Sport
