00:00:00Yeah, I know you wanted to know what was going on.
00:00:20Yeah, we had some water in the line, you know, sometimes you do have water in the line, so
00:00:24we do apologize for those technical problems that we were having earlier, and I suspect
00:00:29that they have been addressed.
00:00:30All right.
00:00:31So how was your day?
00:00:32A very special good morning, Trinidad, Tobago, and the rest of the world.
00:00:34As always, I'm Marlon Hopkinson, and as always, always, welcome to the Morning Edition.
00:00:38So it's Thursday, 22nd of August, right?

00:00:51I hope that you had a good night last night, and that you're safe and sound with us this
00:00:56morning, eh?
00:00:57And we're glad that you are here.
00:00:59We do appreciate it.
00:01:00Let's go to the Daily Express.
00:01:02Not very good news, eh?
00:01:03On the front page today, murder madness, gunmen kill dad and daughter five.
00:01:09Let me repeat that.
00:01:12Gunmen kill dad and daughter five.
00:01:14I don't think you heard me.
00:01:17Gunmen kill dad and daughter five.
00:01:20Let that sink in a little bit.
00:01:232024 toll crosses 400 earliest in five years.
00:01:28So dead are Enrico Guerra and his daughter, Anika, and they were killed on Tuesday night
00:01:33when armed men entered Guerra's business place, Enrico's Corner Mart at Puiro Junction in
00:01:39St. Mary's Village.
00:01:41And teen girl dies in crash.
00:01:44Kaylee Punan, 17, died from injuries she received when the vehicle her boyfriend was driving
00:01:48skidded off the roadway and hit a utility pole along the Solomon Ho Choi Highway near
00:01:54Debe on Tuesday.
00:01:56All right.
00:01:57So we're moving on to some other stories now.
00:02:0030 million victory.
00:02:02Company eBeam must repay live sport money to state.
00:02:06Ten years ago, controversy erupted in the country when it was revealed that a company
00:02:10called eBeam Interact Limited was paid $34 million by the sports company of Trinidad
00:02:17and Tobago for work it never delivered.
00:02:21Last night, sport agency under the sport ministry announced it had successfully obtained a judgment
00:02:29against eBeam Interact Limited in the amount of $30 million plus interest and costs.
00:02:37In a media release, the Ministry of Sports stated that this ruling represents an important
00:02:41step in sports efforts to recover monies paid during a previous contract related to
00:02:47the live sport program.
00:02:49Let's take in some sport now.
00:02:54Chance to regroup.
00:02:55Darren Sammy, head coach of the West Indies white ball senior men's team, said they will
00:02:59use the series against South Africa to continue to refine their game to a more consistent
00:03:05level.
00:03:06Asked about his outlook for the three-match T20 series that bowls off tomorrow at the
00:03:12Brian Lauer Cricket Academy, Sammy said, I wouldn't call it revenge, but it's a great
00:03:17opportunity for us to regroup, refocus.
00:03:20It is the first competitive international game for us since that quarterfinal in the
00:03:24ICC T20 World Cup and one that we want to start fine-tuning ourselves, said Sammy.
00:03:31All right, so we're moving on.
00:03:33It's time to remind you about Trinbago, your nice feature.

00:09:24We do have a lot for you on the program today, so we ask you to stay with us.
00:09:41Just looking at some of these stories before we get into our first interview.
00:09:46One of the main stories we express today, seeking treatment in point 14 for dengue stricken
00:09:51daughter. Mom claims verbal abuse, neglect by hospital staff. A desperate mother attempting
00:09:58to seek treatment on behalf of her daughter, weakened by dengue claims. She was verbally
00:10:04disrespected by hospital staff at the Point 14 Hospital last weekend. Now, Rosalind Siraj,
00:10:11a Ruslak mother of two, told the Express yesterday she is disheartened by the behavior of staff
00:10:16at the hospital's emergency department, whom she said only administered treatment to her
00:10:2118-year-old daughter, Sada, after many frustrated pleas. The young woman, a form 6 student at
00:10:30Shiva Boys Hindu College, was officially diagnosed with a deadly viral illness last week, Thursday,
00:10:36at a private institution. A copy of her diagnosis was shared with the Express. Now, in a matter
00:10:42of hours, the teen's condition had worsened when she developed a high fever, vomiting,
00:10:48and grew extremely weak, according to her mother. I'm looking. There's a very interesting
00:10:58part of this story where the mother was... Well, I can't read it. Get a copy of the Daily
00:11:06Express today, all right, if you want to read more on that story, because the words that
00:11:12I see that are being used here, I can't use it on television, right? So, yeah, but it's
00:11:20a very interesting story. So, what has happened is that the Southwest Regional Health Authority
00:11:27has been contacted, following the complaint, and they are now looking for a doctor. So,
00:11:35the complaints, she said she had been called and told to come in today and give a statement
00:11:42on the matter, all right? And a story that I told you about earlier today, shooting at
00:11:49St. Mary's Village, Minimart, dad and daughter five killed. The man who came to kill Minimart
00:11:54owner Enrico Guerra would have seen his five-year-old daughter next to him. However, they still
00:12:00opened fire on them on Tuesday night. Now, Guerra, 34, was shot in the back and chest.
00:12:05He died at the scene. His little girl, Anika, was hit five times, including in the head.
00:12:12She died at the Princess Town District Hospital. A third person was shot, but survived. The
00:12:18shootings happened at Guerra's business place, Enrico's Corner Mart, at Pui Road Junction,
00:12:23St. Mary's Village. But St. Mary's police knew about the killings at 9.56 p.m. when
00:12:30someone called to say shots were being fired at the store, all right? And TNT hits 400
00:12:38murder mark earliest in five years, alarming trend. The 2024 murder toll has crossed the
00:12:44400 mark earlier this year than in the last five years, with the killings of five-year-old
00:12:50Anika and her 34-year-old father. The comparative for the same period last year was 379 in 2021.
00:13:00In 2023, the 400 mark was reached on September 9th. In 2022, it was reached on September
00:13:064th. In 2021, the country's murder toll crossed 400 in November of a year before. In 2020,
00:13:14the entire toll for the year was 394. In 2019, the 400 figure was reached on September 27th.
00:13:21So, not very good news when it comes to the issue of crime. We're still having great difficulty
00:13:34in dealing with it, all right? Studio, can we move on now? All right. So, let me share
00:13:39some more news for you before we move on. So, Port Chairman, other vessels to help deliver
00:13:45goods to Tobago, crippled Cabo Star remains out of service. The MV Cabo Star remained
00:13:51in the waters of the cruise ship complex in Port of Spain yesterday after a fire in its
00:13:55engine bay crippled the dedicated cargo vessel on Tuesday. Now, Port Authority Chairman Lyle
00:14:02Alexander yesterday explained that because the Cabo Star was a leased vessel, its owners
00:14:07were the ones bearing the cost of repairs and parts needed. Almost a year ago, the same
00:14:12thing happened, but in the waters of Tobago, which left passengers stranded at sea for
00:14:19almost 17 hours. Asked if they were suspicious of Tuesday's fire and its timing almost a
00:14:26year after the first fire, Alexander replied that while the timing of the fire aboard the
00:14:33Cabo Star appeared suspicious, their investigations into last year's fire concluded that it was
00:14:39a case of fuel touching a hot metal surface, surface which ignited, crippling the vessel
00:14:46for almost a month. All right. We can move on now. All right. We do have a very interesting
00:14:54segment for you. So, startling findings by CXC following the results of the CSEC and
00:15:01CAPE examinations. At a function to release the results earlier this week, CXC expressed
00:15:06disappointment over the failure rate in math and English among students. It also expressed
00:15:11concern that thousands of students are not making it to university, and there would be
00:15:16an increase in employment and underemployment, or that should be unemployment and underemployment.
00:15:23It calls the situation a very challenging one, and solutions must be found to address
00:15:28the serious problem of human capital. Well, joining us this morning to speak about this
00:15:33issue is a gentleman who has had a very long history in education, Dr. Bo Tiwari. Dr. Tiwari,
00:15:38good morning. Good morning, Malcolm. Good morning to your
00:15:44listeners. Yes. Dr. Tiwari, it's always good to speak
00:15:47with you, but let me just lay the foundation, because some of you may forget. Now, let me
00:15:52just remind you that Dr. Tiwari is a former planning and development minister, a former
00:15:56principal of U.E. St. Augustine, a former chairman of Nehurst. He facilitated the creation
00:16:02of COSTA, contributed to the establishment of the National Training Agency, and he also
00:16:07served as chairman of the committee which formulated a national policy for tertiary
00:16:12education. All right? So I just wanted to put that on the table. Dr. Tiwari, what's
00:16:18your assessment after hearing the findings of CXC?
00:16:24Well, for some time now, I think that we have a problem of secondary school education. Okay?
00:16:40This is throughout the region. You would remember that some years ago, CARICOM set a target
00:16:49of 20% attainment at the tertiary level of education, and we were supposed to have met
00:17:01that around 2005. I don't know if we have met that even now. In Trinidad, it's a little
00:17:12better, but remember the secondary school system is a feeder to the tertiary, and remember
00:17:19also that not everybody will want to go on to tertiary. So I think what we're seeing
00:17:27now is the problem that we've always had, which is that about 50% of the cohort in Trinidad
00:17:36and Tobago, let's say, which is normally about 8,000, do not get five passes with
00:17:47maths and English. What we are hearing now in the region is that that has gone down to
00:18:00about 36%, they are saying now, and we had a problem since 2021, the COVID effect of
00:18:1034%, 37% in 2022, 43% in 2023, and we have slipped again. So we have always had a problem
00:18:24where the secondary school system and the CXE examination for years, for decades, could
00:18:32only pass about half of the age cohort of any given year. So we needed to address that,
00:18:42but we never did. I think what we are now seeing is that the crisis escalating, and
00:18:50what it means is that we have a problem, first of all, of an education system focused
00:19:00solely on examinations, both in the primary level for SEA and at the secondary level for
00:19:09CSEC. Many times what it means with this kind of failure rate is that the foundations have
00:19:17not been laid, either in the primary school or in secondary school or both. So that, I
00:19:26mean, can you imagine students not being able to pass five subjects with English and maths?
00:19:31So it means something terribly wrong. Now, I can't take the view that 50% of the Caribbean,
00:19:41of the students in the Caribbean are done. I have to take the view that there is a problem
00:19:49of teaching and learning methodology, a problem of school organization, and a problem of management
00:20:01of different levels of talents and capacity in the school system. So my own feeling is
00:20:12that you've got to address this problem at a system level. You've got to address it also
00:20:19at a country by country level, because it would be different in Grenada and Dominica
00:20:25than it is for Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago has always had a higher percentage
00:20:33of students doing better in the region. And recently Guyana has been the country that
00:20:41has been doing much better. St. Lucia has always, for the last couple of decades, been
00:20:49doing better also. So you need to deal with island by island, country by country, but
00:20:56you also need to deal with school by school. Because St. Mary's College and presentation
00:21:02on St. Augustine Girls High School and Lakshmi Girls is not the same thing as Palo Seco Secondary
00:21:12or Mayaro Secondary or Woodbrook Secondary or St. James Secondary or Buparapo Secondary.
00:21:21I am using the Trinidad examples, but that would also hold in other countries. So you
00:21:28have schools that do well and in which a large portion of the cohort does well, but you also
00:21:33have schools in which everybody does badly. For instance, one of the alarming figures
00:21:41I read in the newspapers yesterday was that 94% of the students taking the examination,
00:21:50and these are not my figures, those are the figures in the newspapers, even by the registry,
00:21:55failed to take five subjects. And only 4.9%, I should say less than 5%, got maths, English
00:22:06and three other subjects to make five subjects with maths and English. Now, this is horrible
00:22:14by any standards. This would be considered a crisis in any part of the world.
00:22:20But you know, Dr. Tiwari, let's also look at the numbers. According to CXC CEO, Dr.
00:22:25Wayne Wesley, he says we have been losing almost 11,500 students on an average who will
00:22:32not fully matriculate into university because they need maths and English. You will have
00:22:3711,500 students who will be underemployed if they are, because if you don't have maths
00:22:43and English, employers are going to pay you less. You have students who will require rework.
00:22:49He goes on. Most importantly, it is having a negative impact on the economic competitiveness
00:22:54of a region because you are having less students being able to drive the innovation that is
00:22:59required for the economy to advance and for critical thinking and problem-solving attitudes
00:23:04to be developed. Well, he is absolutely right. We have a human
00:23:10capital crisis in the Caribbean. And the acceleration of AI and related technologies is going to
00:23:18make that worse. If you can't add, subtract, multiply and divide, and you can't read, I
00:23:25think you have a serious crisis of engaging the world of tomorrow. And therefore, I mean,
00:23:33I listen, I've been writing about this crisis. He talks about 11,000 people, you know, not
00:23:39being able to go to Tishoree. Every year we have 10,000 people in Trinidad and Tobago
00:23:45alone who can't go on to Tishoree. Only if they go to a bridging institution like COSTAT
00:23:53to try and make up or take some other course like YJEP or so on, can they get back in the
00:24:00system? This has been going on for decades, you know, and it is a serious problem. I don't
00:24:07know why we are not addressing it. We are too focused on the present and not understanding
00:24:15that the present creates the future. All these movements into gangs, into gangsterism, into
00:24:23crime, all this lack of labour participation, the low labour participation rate in the economy,
00:24:34all of these things are reflected by the poor performance in the secondary school system
00:24:42and the inability of the economy to absorb even people coming out of the Tishoree system.
00:24:51It is a major human capital crisis, but we are not dealing with it.
00:24:58So Dr. Tiwari, so what do we do? Is there a need for a relook of the curriculum? Do we need to
00:25:06consider if certain things we are teaching or young people, if they are still relevant? Is the
00:25:13curriculum just too hard? Is it that more students want to get involved in entrepreneurship and
00:25:19they are just not on the academics? What are the problems really?
00:25:25No, well, in any society, you will only have a certain percentage really that is interested in
00:25:32academics. But there are things that other people could do. I mean, you can do technical,
00:25:38vocational, which is a good opportunity. Now, the way the world is going, technical, vocational,
00:25:45will create more opportunities for the individual than academics. You do need an academic or what
00:25:54you might call an intellectual class, of course. But you don't need everybody to be an academic.
00:26:00You don't need everybody to get a PhD or a bachelor's degree. You can do a thing.
00:26:07But what it means is that it takes thought and these things need to be related to what else you
00:26:15are doing. You cannot have, let's not call it an education system. We cannot have a schooling system
00:26:25that is not related to some kind of philosophy of education and human capital development
00:26:33and not linked to the strategies for economic and sustainable development in your society.
00:26:41I mean, it does not make sense. And Marlon, this is a big crisis, but it's not a big problem.
00:26:49You are only talking in Trinidad and Tobago about 20,000 children every year.
00:26:55In the other islands, you are talking about less. So it is manageable. It's not like you
00:27:02had a million or 2 million or 20 million. You have 20,000. You also can separate this problem
00:27:10school by school so that you can deal with it on the basis of 600 students at a time,
00:27:21300 students at a time, one school at a time, one class at a time of 30 students, etc. But you've
00:27:31got to have the will and you have to have a strategy and a structure for dealing with it.
00:27:39I don't know if people understand what is the consequence of not dealing with this.
00:27:45I think the registrar hints at what the consequence is. Lack of competitiveness,
00:27:51no innovation, very little entrepreneurship, inability to participate in the global system
00:27:59that is evolving through technology. And it means backwardness for your nation. As the rest of the
00:28:07world goes forward, you are receding simply by being in the same place and getting worse.
00:28:14So I would say this is a major crisis because all your crime, this is your crime feeder.
00:28:24We have to get real about these things.
00:28:31Let me just touch on something else that Dr. Wesley has said. He said CXC has assembled a team
00:28:38to create standards for literacy and numeracy. This team will collaborate with AI to devise
00:28:44specific interventions for improvement and identify opportunities for development.
00:28:50The aim of this program is to support the existing education system. This is not intended to be a
00:28:57panacea, but I think as an examining body, we need to assist the ecosystem collectively.
00:29:04Us together will have to sit down and figure out a way to correct the serious problem impacting
00:29:10the development of the human capital of the region.
00:29:15Well, I mean, I applaud him for trying to make an intervention,
00:29:21but I really don't think it is the job of the Caribbean Examinations Council
00:29:29to solve the education problem. Their job is to set standards of achievement and attainment
00:29:38with examination to certify that when people get their certificate, they have attained a certain
00:29:46level. It is up to the schools and the education systems in the individual countries to organize
00:29:53their business to do that. You know, in the United States, Canada, the UK or whatever it is,
00:29:59I mean, in the United States, you could go to any school and graduate from any high school,
00:30:05but you have to take SAT to go into university. There are other examinations that you take to
00:30:12go into other things. So, the examination system is not really about how to manage education.
00:30:25It is about how to set standards of attainment that are universally acceptable. It is up to the
00:30:35education system and the school to be able to meet those standards by the things that they do.
00:30:43And I would say immediately, there are about 50 percent of any population, any
00:30:56secondary school population that needs to start simply with a foundation of English and mathematics
00:31:05and forget about subjects in first form. Right? Let them learn to read,
00:31:13comprehend, talk about what they read that makes sense. Let them learn how to do the basics
00:31:23of mathematics and make progress in that. The basics of literacy and numeracy.
00:31:31And in the reading material, you can introduce them to things that are interesting or relevant
00:31:40that add to their knowledge and information. But what you are really doing is strengthening
00:31:46their foundational skills for literacy and numeracy and critical and creative thinking.
00:31:53You can do that. You need to help the students to do that because at the end of the day,
00:31:58they're going to have to make decisions. They're going to have to make choices. They're going to
00:32:02have to be able to discriminate. They're going to have to be able to discern. And you need to do
00:32:08that. Yeah. Dr. Tiwari, please stay with us for a little while longer. We must go to a very short
00:32:15break. We're coming back, Dr. Tiwari. Coming back every week.

00:34:35All right, everybody. So, welcome back. So, we are continuing our discussion on the recently
00:34:56released CSEC results. And we do have with us this morning Dr. Bo Tibari. Dr. Tibari,
00:35:01thank you very much for staying with us. Doctor, I just want to touch on a point that you made
00:35:06earlier. And I did ask you about it, about the relevance of the of the school curriculum.
00:35:12Because, doctor, there is a very simple argument that we hear from students all of the time. That
00:35:20if I'm doing a particular subject, why am I being taught things like algebra and ad maths and,
00:35:28you know, difficult subjects. Subjects that may be difficult for certain people.
00:35:35And what happens, there is a level of frustration by the students. So, let's speak about that.
00:35:42Relevance, frustrating, what is being taught, frustrating students. And do we also look at
00:35:50teaching in a more palatable way that the students would understand?
00:35:55No, you're right. There is need for curriculum rethinking. There is need for retraining of
00:36:05teachers, I think. There is need for a focus on teaching and learning methodologies that can
00:36:17address some of the challenges that you are raising. Student interest, student disinterest,
00:36:24those kinds of things. We need to introduce the technology in a smart way. Because,
00:36:33even those students who are not doing well in CXC, they're quite good on the laptops and on the
00:36:43iPads, you know, the technology, the food, etc. And the other thing is that we need to build in,
00:36:54you know, we need to build in some accountability in the system. The accountability has to be for
00:37:01parents, for children, and for teachers. Because, at the end of the day, it seems to me
00:37:12that a school should be accountable every year for what the students in Form 1, Form 2, Form 3,
00:37:23Form 4 achieve. You can't wait for large numbers of failures in Form 5 at CSEC level
00:37:33to talk about the crisis. You know, it takes them five years to get there, at least four.
00:37:42So, you need to build accountability. Teachers are responsible for their charges.
00:37:49Students have to learn responsibility for themselves. And parents have to take responsibility
00:37:56for their children. And you need to build that into the system. But you do need some curriculum
00:38:02rethinking and reform. You need some shift in teaching and learning methodology. You need to
00:38:10bring the technology meaningfully and smartly into the system. And you need to do some retraining.
00:38:19The same old methodologies are not going to work. And in some of the, in the curriculum reform,
00:38:25you have to do something. If you have a school in which you have all these boys with testosterone
00:38:35that want to play football and want to do sports and so on, don't make that an extra curriculum.
00:38:43Make that the center of your teaching and learning. So, after they play the football,
00:38:50you could come back and watch a football game and look at what they do right, look at what they do
00:38:57wrong and so on. You could use that to teach about physical education. You could use that to teach
00:39:05about healthy lifestyles. You could use that to teach about taking care of your body.
00:39:13You could use that to take into account basic elements of human sciences. You know,
00:39:23I mean, you could be smart about that. From that, you could talk about the challenge of
00:39:30going into sports as a profession and how much discipline it takes to do that. But also the fact
00:39:39that you may not be able to have a career in sports for a lifetime. So, you've got to be
00:39:46prepared for other things. You know, I mean, we can be creative and rational about the way we do.
00:39:56We have, we have, we could make that the centerpiece of something or we could make
00:40:04music the centerpiece of something. We could make drama the centerpiece of something,
00:40:10you know. And, you know, I don't know. To me, there's a lack of creativity
00:40:19and a lack of thinking in the way that we approach the solution to problems.
00:40:29I just want to touch on another issue that CXC has raised. There were also concerns raised about
00:40:37absenteeism. At the Cape level, there was a five percent absenteeism rate, which was higher than
00:40:45in 2023. All right. Now, they gave certain reasons, some of the main reasons for absenteeism,
00:40:52personal emergencies, which I'm sure that people can understand. But here's this. Students not
00:40:59feeling adequately prepared. And another one, personal preference just not to attend. So,
00:41:07they have just decided, look, you see me? I'm not, I'm not going to show up for any exam.
00:41:13What is this saying about the, about the student, the psyche
00:41:17of the student? And can we link that also to the curriculum?
00:41:22Yes, because, I mean, clearly, mental health is an important thing in individual success
00:41:33and in educational achievement. So, the mental health side of the student needs to be properly
00:41:40managed too. I mean, this is not anything new or great that I'm saying. I mean, these things have
00:41:47been talked about for years. And, but we are not approaching the business of education holistically.
00:41:54First of all, we are not approaching it realistically. Presentation and Hillview
00:42:00are different schools from some of the government secondary schools. That is a reality. Okay.
00:42:07And there's a whole history and evolution of that. You could write analysis on these things
00:42:15till you're paralyzed. But the fact is that we need to accept that there is a reality about.
00:42:23Secondly, there are students who are academically gifted and they will do well wherever you put
00:42:31them. But there are some students who need help, additional help. They need different conditions.
00:42:39They need environmental adjustments, etc. And you need to take those things into consideration.
00:42:49You know, when I was principal of the university, I brought Howard Gardner here,
00:42:54who is the person who wrote about these multiple intelligences. When I brought him here,
00:43:00he was at Harvard. He's now retired. I met him not too long ago at New York.
00:43:06But, you know, many, many years ago, I'm talking about decades. He wrote about the fact that
00:43:12you need to redesign the school system and the classroom teaching methodologies
00:43:19to take into account the multiple intelligences of people. And, you know, I mean, we have this
00:43:26same system, which is horses for courses, you know, in which you have all these children,
00:43:34they run in a race to the end, nobody looking at anything from Form 1 to Form 4.
00:43:40When you reach the Form 5, you celebrate the scholarship winners, all right, and you hold
00:43:47your head and bawl about the failures. I mean, really, what kind of society does that over and
00:43:53over and doesn't learn anything from it, you know? And as I said, it has to be solved system-wise.
00:44:00It has to be solved school-by-school. And not every school is the same, and not every community
00:44:07is the same. You have to find a methodology for dealing with that. But you cannot just...
00:44:14You know, Dr. Tiwari, I think that this conversation that we're having this morning,
00:44:18it's a very, very important conversation. And, you know, it has to be a conversation that has
00:44:24to be expanded. Because for me, Dr. Tiwari, my experience with the education system over the
00:44:34years, the experience has been that it is really designed for those who are academically inclined.
00:44:45And I think for too long, Dr. Tiwari, and you may not agree with this, but I'm just going to put it
00:44:51on the table. I don't know that the academics really cared, because they were doing well.
00:44:58Students who were academically inclined were doing well. And I don't really know that there
00:45:03was a great effort to reshape the curriculum and to do things differently. Because as you know,
00:45:09Dr. Tiwari, sometimes you have different children in the classroom, and those children were seen
00:45:16as troublemakers and the class clowns, and they would amount to nothing. And they were just left
00:45:23there, really. The next step was really to the garbage heap, you know?
00:45:30Yeah, no, no, I think it's right. You see, if you have a system in which
00:45:3550% of your students do fairly well, and up to 50% can come through the system with
00:45:47quote-unquote success, that is to say, five passes with English and Maths.
00:45:55And you have some percentage of that 50% going on to CAPE, and then to university,
00:46:07teacher re-education, and so on. And you have all your teachers coming through the same system.
00:46:13You have a self-fulfilling prophecy of a small cohort of people always getting through,
00:46:21and the rest being left behind. So that's why I say that you've got to intervene with the teachers,
00:46:29because the teachers cannot assume that all the students are going to do well,
00:46:34or all the students need to be treated in the same way. There are many, many students who will do
00:46:41well in the right environment, in the right structure. You know, for instance, why does a
00:46:49student have to do six subjects at once, to get six subjects? There are some students who are
00:46:58allowed to just do one subject, and let them do that, and maybe they could do it even before they're
00:47:0515, and they get that, and they're done. And then they go on to another subject the other year,
00:47:13and they get that other subject. But the school has to be organized and structured to make that
00:47:19possible. And I don't think that there is enough flexibility in this system. And I want to say,
00:47:27we do everything in an authoritarian way here, and military fashion, and the world doesn't work so.
00:47:36The more technology-driven we are, with the demands of technology for conformity,
00:47:44the more we are going to have to be creative in the way, and flexible in the way we help people to
00:47:52find their way to be able, or else we will have a militarization of society,
00:48:01in a very authoritarian-led kind of system. And I mean, I think, I mean,
00:48:12I don't, you know, try that on to me. I mean, I love this country. I think we could be so much
00:48:17more. I love the Caribbean. I've traveled in most of the country. I mean, we have tremendous
00:48:23potential, but we don't have any future or potential if we continue in the way that we
00:48:30are doing. Clark just wrote a report saying that the Caribbean is in danger of being a slow-growth
00:48:41economy, which means that we are headed nowhere far. Yes. There was a report just written about
00:48:51Trinidad and Tobago saying that over the last two decades, we have lost a significant amount of
00:48:59wealth in this country, which is very hard, very hard to get back. Okay. So, all of these things
00:49:07point to the fact that in almost every sector, whether it's education, whether it's in
00:49:13competitiveness, whether it's in technological, keep it technological, keeping up, whether it is
00:49:24in the way our society is transforming economically, we are headed for what you might call
00:49:31a receding future. And I think that the leaders of all countries in the region need to take that
00:49:39seriously and talk about it. Yes. Dr. Toubari, thank you very much for this conversation this
00:49:45morning. I do appreciate it. And I'm sure that our viewers, they also appreciate it. Bye for now,
00:49:50doctor. Thank you very much for having me. All right, bye for now. It's time for a quick break, everybody.

00:52:37Good morning. I am Ansel Gibbs with a news update. The number of confirmed dengue fever
00:52:49cases in TNT is at least 911. That's according to the latest update from the Ministry of Health.
00:52:58Health officials say the number of confirmed dengue related deaths is still eight. The
00:53:04ministry is urging anyone with signs or symptoms of dengue fever to immediately seek medical
00:53:10treatment. Prime Minister Rawley is urging the people of TNT to stop listening to misleading
00:53:19voices on replacing Christopher Columbus's three ships with the steel pan on the coat of arms.
00:53:26Indigenous, if you go into the Oxford dictionary or any good dictionary,
00:53:32you will see it comes from the Latin word indigenous and it means originating
00:53:39or occurring naturally in a country or a region. The steel pan is qualified by that description.
00:53:50It originated here. The tabla is not an originating instrument here. It came from India.
00:53:59And in the weather forecast, expect a mostly hot and sunny day despite the isolated shower.
00:54:05There is a low to medium chance of the isolated heavier afternoon shower or thunderstorm
00:54:11in western Trinidad. Tonight will be mostly fair. There may be gusty winds and street or
00:54:17flash flooding with heavy showers and or thunderstorms. The forecast maximum is 34
00:54:22degrees Celsius in Trinidad and 32 in Tobago. Seas will be slight to moderate with ways between
00:54:29one point two and one and a half meters in open waters and up to one meter in sheltered areas.
00:54:41The TV6 daily health tip is brought to you by Omega XL. Welcome. Today we dive into the
00:54:49importance of improving adrenal gland circulation and how it impacts your overall health.
00:54:54The adrenal glands, small but mighty, sit atop your kidneys and play a crucial role in your
00:54:59body's stress response by producing hormones like cortisol. When faced with stress or high
00:55:04blood sugar levels, your adrenal glands release cortisol to help regulate glucose metabolism.
00:55:10However, chronic stress can lead to overproduction of cortisol, exacerbating insulin resistance and
00:55:16contributing to persistently high blood sugar levels. This chronic stress response and high
00:55:21cortisol levels often lead to inflammation, creating a feedback loop that worsens metabolic
00:55:26dysfunction. This is why managing adrenal gland health is vital. To improve adrenal gland
00:55:31circulation, several strategies can be highly effective. First, acupuncture can stimulate
00:55:37specific points on the body to promote blood flow and energy balance, supporting adrenal function.
00:55:42Nutritional strategies, such as incorporating foods rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
00:55:48like leafy greens, citrus fruits and nuts, also enhance blood circulation. Herbal remedies,
00:55:55including adaptogenic herbs like licorice root, ashwagandha and rhodiola rosea, can support adrenal
00:56:01function and improve blood circulation. Regular aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking, jogging
00:56:07or cycling, improves overall blood circulation and supports adrenal health. Practices like yoga
00:56:13and tai chi not only promote relaxation but also enhance circulation. Week by week, these practices
00:56:19can lead to significant health benefits. In the first week, you may feel a boost in energy as
00:56:25cortisol and adrenaline production increases. By the second week, blood pressure regulation improves,
00:56:31leading to more stable blood pressure levels. In the third week, enhanced metabolic health is
00:56:36noticeable as cortisol levels stabilize, improving glucose handling and reducing insulin resistance.
00:56:42Finally, by the fourth week, immune function strengthens, reducing the frequency of illnesses
00:56:48and improving overall well-being. These improvements highlight the importance of
00:56:52maintaining optimal adrenal gland function. Optimal adrenal health leads to increased energy levels,
00:56:58improved stress resilience, enhanced immune function, better metabolic health and greater
00:57:03mental clarity. Your adrenal glands are the silent champions working tirelessly to keep your body in
00:57:08balance. By understanding their vital role and supporting their health, you can optimize your
00:57:13well-being and thrive. Thank you for joining me. Stay informed and proactive about your health.
00:57:19Your journey to a healthier, more vibrant life starts with caring for your adrenal glands.
00:57:25Remember, every small step you take towards better adrenal health contributes to your overall
00:57:29well-being. Celebrate your progress and continue to prioritize your health for a more vibrant life.

00:59:34All right, so welcome back and I have this for you this morning. This is what we are going to
00:59:39be speaking about, Zessa's Paradise. And we do have the author in studio with us this morning,
00:59:46Carice O'Connell. Carice, thank you very much for coming this morning.
00:59:50Thank you for having me.
00:59:51Of course. Well, let's discuss Zessa's Paradise. What's the book about?
00:59:57So the book is the story of a girl named Christine and her journey through trying to come out of
01:00:05the ghetto life and building herself up. But unfortunately, other aspects of outside
01:00:10influences keep pulling her back in. So it basically follows her and her stepfather,
01:00:15Law, who is the leader of a gang, as well as his rival, Zion, who is also the leader of another gang.
01:00:22So Carice, what inspired this book? Is it the environment that many of us are living in,
01:00:28in Trinidad and Tobago?
01:00:31Partially, yes. So Zessa's Paradise was inspired by me just thinking,
01:00:39wow, the situations that a lot of people are in that is known is not really as known
01:00:48by outside influences. And I wanted to spread stories like that. I wanted everyone to know,
01:00:54well, this is how our lives are sometimes. And these are some of these things that we go through
01:00:59and it might seem fantastical and out there, but it's real.
01:01:03Yeah. But so then the question is, did you have to do some level of research before you
01:01:10began writing so that it could be, I suspect, based on what is fact and what is reality?
01:01:18Yes, research was done. The name of it is Zessa's Paradise. So I did go a couple of Zessas.
01:01:23I'm not going to lie. I was all over partying, everybody else in the party drinking and I'm
01:01:28just there looking around, thinking, okay. Also, it's just also stories that you hear
01:01:36that you know are true. People that you meet that talk to you and tell you that
01:01:41I'm going through this situation, I'm going through that situation, stuff like that.
01:01:44But it doesn't glamorize the life though.
01:01:47No, it doesn't. It definitely does not glamorize the life. This story is very gritty. It's very
01:01:53dark in the sense that it's not the, oh, partying, high life, getting drunk, stuff like that. It's
01:02:01like, I'm going through this. I'm stuck here. What am I doing to get myself out of this position?
01:02:06How did I reach here? Why is this one killing this one? Why is my friend dead?
01:02:11Yeah. But what's the demographic that you are targeting by this book?
01:02:17In terms of demographic, it would be everyone in Trinidad, but a certain age group.
01:02:24Age group being teenagers. So, 16 plus, just because of the language used. The language used
01:02:31is our language. It's our Trinidad lingo and our lingo has a lot of cursing in it.
01:02:36So, I just laid it out flat and bare, the exact same way we see it.
01:02:40Yeah. I was just reading a little piece of it and I'm seeing a lot of helling going on, you know,
01:02:44H-E-L-L. What the hell this? What the hell that? Right? But I understand that this is not your
01:02:50first book. Oh, no. This one is the first book. It's the part, it's the first part of a series.
01:02:56Okay. So, the second book is coming out later on this year, December, and the name of it is Murder
01:03:01in the Mangrove. Murder in the Mangrove? Yes. So, it's more of a mystery crime fiction.
01:03:08All right. It, I mean, it just ruled out, Rudolph, Murder in the Mangrove. All right. All
01:03:15right, Paris. So, is there a particular type of book that you are interested in writing?
01:03:24I am interested in writing modern Trinidadian stories, in the sense that when you go into a
01:03:30bookstore or you look for books about Trinidad, they're mostly from the 90s. They're mostly
01:03:37stories based on an older generation, an older time. So, I'm interested in writing about modern
01:03:43Trinidad, about what's happening right now, what's relevant right now, but in a fiction sense.
01:03:49Yeah. Where can people purchase the book? So, this book is available on Amazon,
01:03:54Scribbles and Quill's Bookstore, as well as Shock and Stock Bookseller and Val's Book Nook.
01:04:00Yeah. So, let's look a little bit about your journey into writing. Where and when did this
01:04:09begin for you? So, interesting enough, when I was 16, I signed up for Custer to be a journalism
01:04:17student, and my first assignment ever was to interview a journalist. And I met with Jesse
01:04:25Ramdeo, a very wonderful person, and I interviewed him, and I just had that one intrusive straight
01:04:32to what would happen if. And that birthed Zessa's Paradise. Yeah. All right. Let me see. Anything
01:04:42else you'd like to tell us before you leave us this morning? So, Zessa's Paradise, as well as
01:04:47Murder in the Mangrove, they deal with the intricacies of human nature, about power imbalances,
01:04:53of how the world is viewed from a different perspective. It's books that make you think,
01:04:59I could agree with this character if I was in the situation, and that is what I want. I want
01:05:03people, when they read it, to just think, wow, okay, in this situation, this is something I
01:05:07would probably do. So, Carice, I mean, we were speaking off air, and I was telling you that,
01:05:14you know, that a lot of activity is going on, on social media, on the TikTok, on the Facebook,
01:05:21on the Instagram. So, is there any plan, any plans in the future to have this done, let's say,
01:05:30on video or film, anything like that? Yes. So, the plan is to turn Zessa's Paradise, the entire
01:05:36series, into a miniseries. So, it wouldn't be a movie. It would be more along the lines of a
01:05:42series where every chapter would be an episode. Sorry. So, you all listen to this. So, Christine
01:05:51was nervous. Hell, she was downright terrified. Here she was sitting on the outdoor terrace of
01:05:58her favorite ice cream shop, waiting for Jorah Singh, Jorah boy, but listen to this. What she
01:06:05did know was that a man of Indian descent was walking toward her with a smile on his face,
01:06:11a face that she saw every night on the Channel 6 News. Ah, boy, Carice.
01:06:19Carice, I catch Carice. She looks at TV6. Yeah.
01:06:25Carice, again, please tell us where we can get the book again. So, it's available on Amazon,
01:06:30Scribbles and Quills Bookstore, Shock and Stock Bookseller, and Val's Book Nook. Yeah. Carice,
01:06:36well, thank you very much for coming this morning. It was a very interesting conversation for me,
01:06:42and keep on writing. Thank you. And all the best in your future
01:06:47endeavors. Yeah. Thank you. All right. So, it's time for a quick break, everybody.
01:06:51Channel 6 News. We're coming back.

01:09:05Hold up. Let me just come up the audio and come back.
01:09:36All right. So, we have some soca for you on. So, we do have on the line at this time Guyanese artist
01:09:42Patrick Pajo Joseph to tell us about his musical journey and his new soca release. Pajo, good
01:09:48morning. Morning. Good morning. Thanks for having me. Yeah. Pajo, well, it's good to speak with you.
01:09:55But Pajo, before we move into the music, tell us a little bit about yourself now because I'm sure
01:10:01while some people are familiar with you, some people say, Pajo, I really don't know. So,
01:10:07tell us a little bit about Pajo. Yeah, no problem. So, I was born in Guyana and I moved to the UK
01:10:14when I was 19 further in cricket. So, I was a little cricketer back in the day. And I've been
01:10:21up here ever since. And, you know, I've got my family, obviously, three kids. But I first got
01:10:29into music via hosting events. So, I was an events organizer in the UK and I used to do a lot
01:10:34of concerts. But I always had a passion for music and it's something I always wanted to do. But I
01:10:40never knew how to really get into it. And in just before COVID, actually, is when I actually said,
01:10:47you know what, I'm going to do it because a friend of mine who was close to me passed away. And one
01:10:52thing he used to always say is, if you're going to do something, do it. If you want to smoke,
01:10:56smoke it. When I drink, drink. Don't have no excuses. Stop making excuses and just do it.
01:11:02And that resonated with me. So, yeah, I jumped into it, both feet. And since then, things have
01:11:10been going good. Yeah. Yeah, real good. Yeah. Let's expand on that experience a little bit.
01:11:16When you say things have been going good, let's talk about the opportunities that you have gotten.
01:11:22Let's speak about how people have responded to your music and responded to you. Let's look at
01:11:29that experience. Tell us about that experience. Yeah, sure. So, when I first started, I had no
01:11:35idea how to even record myself, right. But I got an opportunity via another guy,
01:11:41he's a producer called Joey 2 Cool Productions. And it sort of took off from there.
01:11:48And COVID obviously came, so I never toured with my first release. But what that allowed was a lot
01:11:55of musicians around me that I didn't know was musicians actually said to me, oh, if you're
01:12:00serious about this, you know, let's work. So this is where I started to work with the likes of Shaker
01:12:05HD Productions. And he sort of mentored me at the beginning of my career, helping me with
01:12:13songwriting. And then he introduced me to the likes of Daryl Gervais, who's from Trinidad,
01:12:18who, as many people know, is responsible for a lot of Kessy's hits. And Patrice, he's an
01:12:24industry writer, and he took over the writing mentorship with me. Ozone, again from Trinidad,
01:12:33they all started to help me with my journey. And from there, doors started to open, you know,
01:12:38I started to get access to a lot of the industry guys, you know, little conversations with the
01:12:44likes of Marshell, little conversations with Skinny, Problem Child, you know, Patrice,
01:12:50Rest In Peace Ricardo, Drew, these guys, just little snippets of stuff just kept me going,
01:12:54you know, just encouraged me to keep going. And they said, you know, you have a little spark,
01:12:59just keep pushing through, you know. And for me, that's something I always wanted, you know,
01:13:05I wanted to make where I'm from proud and just to curate the best music. And it's allowed me
01:13:12to travel, you know, I've opened for Kess, I've opened for Voice a few times, I've done
01:13:20Miami, I've not done Trinidad yet, hopefully next year. 2025. 2025, be putting it in the universe,
01:13:28I'll be in Trinidad. But yes, it's opened a lot of opportunities for me. And, you know,
01:13:35the collaborations are now starting to happen on, you know. So you're a soca artist?
01:13:42Soca, soca artist. Yeah, 100% soca. Yeah. So I guess we can ask the question, why soca?
01:13:48There are so many genres of music out there. Why soca? I think this is the only one that actually
01:13:56spoke to my soul. You know, growing up in a household where you just used to hear Calypso
01:14:00and soca play and your uncles arguing about who's the best Calypso. And, you know, that's sort of
01:14:07always been a part of me. And I was always known as the soca junkie in the family. So it was no
01:14:12surprise to anyone that I would have chosen soca as the genre to get in because this is where I
01:14:18feel more alive. You know, I've tried dancehall music and it felt like I was forcing. But soca
01:14:25just feels natural to me. It feels like this is this is my calling. Yeah. Yeah. But you know,
01:14:32in soca, there are sub genres, right? So some people like to sing wine and jam. Some people
01:14:39like to sing jump and wave. Some people like to sing jab music. Is there a particular sub genre
01:14:47or you can do everything? I've done, I would say everything. I've done a bit of jab. I've done
01:14:56Afro soca before. I've done, I would say, what we call the Trini style of soca, the jump and wave,
01:15:02the wine, the real feel good stuff. But I'm on a stage right now where I'm starting to think
01:15:07about content, right? OK, soca don't necessarily need to be about jump and wave all the time. We
01:15:13can still sing about our life experiences within soca and sing stuff that could resonate, you know?
01:15:20Yeah. Raju, please stay with us. We must go to a very short break. Please stay with us.
01:15:25We are going to a very short break. We'll be right back.

01:17:07All right, so welcome back. Raju, I'm liking this song, you know.
01:17:11Raju, you there? Thank you, thank you. All righty, all righty, man.
01:17:16Is Problem Child in that song?
01:17:20Yeah, Problem Child features on this song, yeah. Yeah, that's what I say, man. I know the thing, you know, Raju. I know the thing.
01:17:26So tell us about, we just have about two minutes, Raju. Tell us about the new work that you're
01:17:32working on and if people want to get in contact with you, how do they do that? Yeah, definitely.
01:17:38So this is the release that you probably just heard there. It's called Identity with Problem
01:17:42Child. It's going to be my new release on the 30th of August and this song is a great collaboration.
01:17:49It came about by Caricom Music, which is a label in the UK that's been giving people the opportunity
01:17:57to curate music and market it on a global scale. So we work well together and got the opportunity
01:18:05to do this with Problem Child and he's been a great mentor throughout this process. But this
01:18:10song here speaks about, you know, togetherness. It speaks about everybody. We don't care who you
01:18:16identify as. When we're in a party, soaking music is inclusive. We're gonna have a good time.

01:22:29All right, so welcome back everyone. So we are talking CPL again and more so WCPL. This time
01:22:42we're going to dive deep into cricket or at least into the life of one of CPL's cricket commentators.
01:22:47We are talking to someone who works behind the scene as well as in front of the camera,
01:22:52and she is no stranger to media. You might have seen her several times on your television sets.
01:22:57We are now joined by Alex Jordan, cricket commentator for the CPL. Alex, good morning.
01:23:03Thank you very much for joining us. Good morning. Good morning, TV6. Good morning, sweet TNT.
01:23:09Thank you for having me. I'm not tired. You're tired. We were up late nights at the Brian Lahr
01:23:15Cricket Academy. So last night, so you had the opening of the tournament. And of course,
01:23:22we know the game, it was Guyana and Barbados. Of course, Alex Barbados won. Yeah, I suspect
01:23:31that's why you're up so early and you're happy this morning.
01:23:39No, I think you misunderstand me, sir. I am a West Indian. I am a West Indian in my soul.
01:23:46So cricket is the real winner. And of course, women's cricket. What actually made that match
01:23:51up last night extra exciting was it was the season opener, obviously, and it was a repeat
01:23:57of last year's final. And same result, even down to the nail biting finish last over such a tight
01:24:05finish. So it wasn't just as simple as that. Really good stuff. Yeah, Alex. I think that
01:24:11Alex gave me the political answer this morning. Right, Alex? But let's...
01:24:19Thank you. You know, my father's Guyanese. My mother's Australian. I'm born in Barbados. I
01:24:26have lived in Jamaica. The region is my home. Yeah, I am. I'm not being... You know why you're
01:24:33saying that? Because Trinbagonians are like that. I have never in my life met a Trinbagonian who
01:24:38supports any team but TKR. I respect that. But me, I'm a West Indian. I want to make that clear.
01:24:44I am a West Indian. Alex, all of us are Kalaloueno. All of us mix up, right? We mix up,
01:24:50we mix up. But let's talk a little bit about the quality of play that you would have seen
01:24:57last evening from the two squads. And let's also look at the environment at the Brian Lara Stadium
01:25:06last night. You know, the Brian Lara Cricket Academy is, you know, as beautiful as anywhere
01:25:13in the world. What a stunning facility. So beautiful to be there. It's the first time
01:25:17we're seeing the women's CPL with night games. So that brings its ambience, right? We had a little
01:25:24crowd in there. It's going to be building. Obviously, that was more of a weeknight.
01:25:28We had the rhythm section as loud as ever. So you're really getting the feeling of being in
01:25:33Trinidad and Tobago. And, you know, high quality cricket match. A few catches were put down. I
01:25:38think Hayley Matthews, when I spoke to her at the end of the game, she won clear of the match.
01:25:43And as you were so desperate to point out, the winning captain of last night's match,
01:25:48well done to the Barbados Royals. She pointed out that, you know, the girls are just getting
01:25:53used to with the lights on, right? Playing at night is another thing. There was a little
01:25:57dew as well in the evening at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. So I think a few more catches
01:26:03were put down than either captain would have liked. But we saw some screamers, some outrageously good
01:26:09catching and some great quality cricket. I think Trin-Begonians will be very surprised and taken
01:26:16aback at the high quality cricket you're going to see at the Women's CPL. I just want to say
01:26:21something really quickly because, you know, when we come from this part of the world,
01:26:25it's not the same as other parts of the world. In other parts of the world, women's cricket is
01:26:29thriving and normal. It's a normal thing to go and watch. It's a normal thing. It's been going
01:26:33on for years. In our part of the world, we're still waking up from some deep slumber. So really
01:26:40important for us to get behind our women, for you guys to get behind the Trin-Begonian women
01:26:44who start their campaign this evening at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. And you know what, Alex,
01:26:49I have been having some discussions with WCPL players over the past few days and I've been
01:26:57saying to them, the time has to come in the WCPL and cricket, women cricket on the whole,
01:27:08where everyone's name must become a household name, you know. And we have to get there. I mean,
01:27:17yes, we are taking steps and there have been much or has been much development in women's cricket,
01:27:25but a lot more has to be done, right? And it's so ironic, you know, because we have two
01:27:32cricketers, one in Deandra Dalton, right, who is the captain of the said same TKR,
01:27:38and one in Hayley Matthews, the captain of the said same Barbados Royals,
01:27:42who are two of the best cricketers this world has ever seen in the women's game. And they come from
01:27:48here. They come from around by us, you know, big, big names. There's Jess Jonathan, there's Chloe
01:27:53Tryon. These are big international stars. Jemima Rodrigues, Sheikha Pandey, the rest of the world
01:28:00really knows these names. And I want to encourage the West Indians, the Caribbean people to come out,
01:28:05fun for the whole family. Bring your boy children and your girl children. You'll know Shane Watson.
01:28:10Shane Watson is an Australian legend, you know, played on the Australian team. He now coaches,
01:28:15IPL, he writes books. He's a big name. And I remember Shane Watson, he's an Australian,
01:28:20telling me when I was telling him, boy, my part of the world is still only waking up to women's
01:28:26cricket. He looked at me quizzically. And he said, Alex, my son watches more women's cricket than
01:28:33men's cricket. Because Australia started two decades ago. So their women are the best in the
01:28:41world by a country mile. Right? This is just this is just the natural nature of how things happen.
01:28:47You give things more attention, you raise the awareness, you give women more opportunity and
01:28:52more access, you get a higher quality of cricket. Come out and watch the women's CPL. And in fact,
01:28:57not only the women's CPL this weekend, they're going to be three doubleheaders where the women's
01:29:02CPL plays after the men's West Indies South Africa games. It's going to be outstanding. I don't want
01:29:09to I don't want to ram on straight about how far behind we are in terms of women cricket. I just
01:29:15want to encourage you to come and see for yourself. See for yourself. I guarantee you, you'll be
01:29:21you'll be surprised. Yeah. And I think we need to speak a lot more, Alex. And when I say we,
01:29:27not necessarily us, but there has to be a wider conversation, because I feel that sometimes
01:29:35fans feel, well, the game is not going to be as interesting as the as the men's game. And the
01:29:43conversation that I've been having over the past few days is let's look at the excitement of the
01:29:48game. Let's look at the passion of the cricketers. Let's look at their experience. Let's look at their
01:29:57expertise. So I think what we've been trying to really do is to focus on that and say, hey,
01:30:03to the fans, this game is just as interesting as the men's game. Yes. And I will say sometimes more
01:30:13you watch women's tennis, you watch women's golf, both of them much more intriguing. I remember
01:30:19like an era of tennis where serve and volley, serve and volley tennis, the point is over.
01:30:24Whereas women's tennis were longer rallies, more skillful, more lobbying, more more guile as opposed
01:30:30to brawn. You know, I think if you've never watched women's cricket before, of course, you you adjust
01:30:36your thing, right? You're not bowling the ball as fast. You're not maybe not hitting as many
01:30:40sixes, but it's a different game. They're always tight games. And it would be ironic to hear
01:30:46West Indies say, oh, it's not going to be as good because I love my people. And my people love to
01:30:51cry down men's cricket too. My people love to cry down them good, good West Indies team too that should
01:30:56be rooted deep within our Caribbean bellies. So it's not a woman's thing. It's a mindset.
01:31:04And I would love people to come and endorse our women just for the fun of it.
01:31:11What about the night out? Brian Lahr Cricket Academy is a fantastic facility, music, food,
01:31:17atmosphere of fun for the whole family, bring everyone. Yeah, and I think it is safe to say that
01:31:23support is very important, not only for the game, but I think that support is also important to the
01:31:31young girl who may want to participate in cricket and, you know, and so that she feels that, hey,
01:31:43this is a viable opportunity and this is something that I love that I can become involved in.
01:31:50You know, I spend a lot of time on what I call blocks in Barbados, you know, very,
01:31:56very ordinary Barbadians. I talk to them every day and I say, if you have a child,
01:32:00a girl child, and she's not playing cricket, you are wasting time. That one little girl can
01:32:06bring the whole family out of poverty. You know the kind of money Hayley Matthews making around
01:32:11the world? This is a viable way to make a living, right? It didn't come in my lifetime.
01:32:19But right now, women's cricket is flourishing. Women's CPL, our version of the franchise,
01:32:27there's many more. There's one in Australia, one in England, one in India. Big money, my friend.
01:32:33You can make your living. You can see the world, play cricket, gain the admiration and belief
01:32:40of your nation and region, inspire those around you, and get to make a living playing a sport.
01:32:46Yes, please. I don't think we really understand. I don't think we really understand how powerful
01:32:52a tool that is for empowerment, not just for girls. You empower girls and women, you are
01:33:00empowering an entire community. Yeah. Alex, please stay with us. We are going to a very short break.
01:33:05We're coming back, everybody.
01:33:22It's CPL time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time

01:36:37The Republic Bank CP election is live and exclusive on CCN TV six
01:36:43Alright everybody, so welcome back. So we are continuing our discussion with Alex Jordan,
01:36:58cricket broadcaster. We just have a few more minutes with Alex. Alex, we want to give away
01:37:03some tickets this morning for the WCPL. Is it possible that you can ask our viewers a
01:37:09very simple question so that they can get some tickets for this evening's game?
01:37:15So easy, so basic. Who is the captain of the women's TKR team? Trinbago Knight Riders,
01:37:23call your team. Oh gosh, that one's simple. Who's the captain in the team? And you can
01:37:29win tickets. Let my guy know. Call NTV6 and let him know. Remember as well, tickets are
01:37:34on sale at windyscricket.com or box offices at Queens Park Global and Brian Long. Tickets
01:37:40start from $35, a little five US and up. If you buy four tickets for the single header
01:37:47games, you get two free. So lots of deals, lots of specials. And remember, I just want
01:37:52to remind everyone we have triple headers, double headers, sorry. Single header games
01:37:57are 21st, 22nd and 26th. But we have double headers from the 23rd to 25th on the 27th
01:38:04of August. That means Westerns men starting at 3pm and the women's game starting at 8pm.
01:38:11All right. And remember, you're calling us on 623-1711. The extension, it's 1995. We
01:38:16do have a caller. Caller, please give us your answer.
01:38:21Good morning.
01:38:22Morning.
01:38:23Yes. Hi. Good morning. Is it DeAndre Dottin?
01:38:28Yes. Yes.
01:38:29That's right.
01:38:30Yes.
01:38:31DeAndre Dottin. Well done. Easy as 1, 2, 3.
01:38:36Yeah. All right. As I said, we do have just a few minutes again with Alex. Alex, for the
01:38:44fans, what do you want to tell them so that we do get a constant, a stream of fans to
01:38:51the WCPL?
01:38:54What I would say to the first of all, Trinidad and Tobago, you all are very lucky. Last year,
01:38:59the women's CPL was split between Barbados and Trinidad. And this year, Trinidad and
01:39:04Tobago gets the whole tournament. I have to say I was a little bitter, but now I'm embracing
01:39:10it. So you guys now have to come and support your team. TKR. TKR must come and support
01:39:16TKR. TKR won this tournament in the first year. And then Barbados knocked them off the
01:39:21throne. Barbados Royals have had a fighting start last night. They won their first match
01:39:26as defending champions. Trinidad and Tobago, Knight Riders, have an opportunity to put
01:39:31them in a place tonight. And why not come and support your side? TKR is looking really
01:39:38strong this year, guys, 2024. They need the home support to reclaim the title. You know
01:39:44how important that 12th man, or in this case, that 12th woman is. Come and support your
01:39:52team at the Brian Lahr Cricket Academy. TKR plays tonight, 7 p.m. against the Barbados
01:39:57Royals. So that's what I would say to the Trinidad and Tobago public. You don't know
01:40:02women's cricket. The game is going to look a little different to you because historically,
01:40:07women have not had access to play cricket. In fact, I can just say the Barbados Royals
01:40:13have the Barbados Royals Girls' Cricket Club in Barbados that I helped open the other day.
01:40:19And it is the first girls' cricket club in our region. Is that making sense? The only
01:40:28way you can develop people in a sport is by investing in it. And here we have this wonderful
01:40:34project, this wonderful platform called the Women's Caribbean Related League, Women's
01:40:40CPL, and it's in your backyard. I think it's a no-brainer. Alex, I have 20 seconds with
01:40:47you. You had a chance to look at the pitch last night. How was the pitch? Yeah, OK. I
01:40:55think a little up and down, but not bad. And in fact, you know, you play through it. You
01:41:02play the pitch you get. Alex, it was a pleasure speaking with you this morning. Hayley Matthews
01:41:09and Stefani Taylor. I spoke to Stefani at the half, at the mid-innings break. I spoke
01:41:15to Hayley Matthews at the end. Both of them mentioned that it was a little tricky, took
01:41:19some getting used to. All right, Alex, it was a pleasure speaking with you this morning.
01:41:23Thank you very much. Thanks for having me. See you guys at Brian Lara. All right, bye
01:41:28for now. So we are going to a very short break. We're going to give away some tickets
01:41:34after the break, you know, so stay with us and stay close to your phone. We're coming
01:41:37back.

01:43:35Now I love my beautiful trim bagel. I think we all do. But you see this thing called crime?
01:43:40Crime is becoming a norm. It's as though criminals are using our country as their own space to
01:43:44perform. It's as though they have a calling. Meanwhile bodies falling, mothers mourning, and killers
01:43:49walking free in the streets of TNT and still nobody talking. So when you see crime, don't be afraid
01:43:54to pick up the phone and call 800-TIPS or go online at crimestopperstt.com. It's an international
01:43:59system, it works, and it's anonymous. So decide to pick a side, because when everyone is watching,
01:44:06they can't hide.
01:44:10It's CPL, it's CPL time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time,
