00:02:45and killed by a truck.
00:02:48She was identified as 57-year-old Indra Das, excuse me, of Lanch Park, Chaguanas, yeah?
00:02:55Condolences to Miss Das's family.

00:08:55The conversation continues over the existence of statues, monuments and signage from the country's colonial past.
00:09:02On Wednesday of this week, a public consultation was held by the Cabinet Appointed Committee
00:09:07to review statues, monuments and signage.
00:09:09The discussion became heated at times.
00:09:11One of the persons attending the consultation was Chair of the Emancipation Support Committee,
00:09:16Zakiya Uzoma-Wadada, who joins us this morning.
00:09:19Good morning and thank you very much for joining us.
00:09:22Hi Marlon, good morning.
00:09:24Always a pleasure.
00:09:26Good morning to your viewers as well.
00:09:28Yeah, thank you.
00:09:29Thank you and it's always a pleasure speaking to you also.
00:09:34So I know that you would have gone to that consultation to make a contribution.
00:09:40Before we get into the bacchanal, because I'm seeing that since yesterday,
00:09:44you know, there was, I don't want to call it a heated argument,
00:09:49but certain things were said at that consultation.
00:09:53But before we get to that, but what was the message that you tried to put forward at the consultation?
00:10:03Oh, thank you, Marlon.
00:10:05My presentation at that time was to indicate that Trinidad and Tobago
00:10:15would be celebrating 62 years of independence tomorrow,
00:10:20and we are almost 50 years of Republic.
00:10:23And therefore, you know, it is time that we give due consideration
00:10:30to the fact that our physical space still represents so much of the colonial past,
00:10:36and that it does not really inspire or give to our citizens that sense of themselves,
00:10:47that sense of who we are, you know, even for our children growing up.
00:10:51And so I was making the point that, you know, places like Picton and George Street
00:10:58and Henry Street and all of these spaces that mean nothing to us now,
00:11:02it would have been significant when the French, the Spanish, the British,
00:11:07when they ruled and they would have named spaces in keeping with what they considered to be important,
00:11:13and who they held in high esteem.
00:11:17And as we grow as a nation, and I mean, we are 62 now,
00:11:21and as I said, almost 50 years of Republic, I think we'll be 48 years this year,
00:11:27but we really actually need to begin to give serious thought
00:11:32as to how the physical environment in which we dwell
00:11:37reflects our aims, our ambitions, our pride, you know,
00:11:42what are we citizens of Trinidad and Tobago proud of, and of whom we are proud.
00:11:48Yeah, and that's a good point that I think that you are making,
00:11:52that when we started speaking about the statues and the monuments and the signage and so on,
00:11:57I think that there was a myopic view,
00:12:02and I think that the view was, well, let's just take it down,
00:12:07but not digging deeper into why we are taking it down,
00:12:13the benefit of it, and even the impact that it can have on one's psyche
00:12:21as we move forward as a country.
00:12:23Extremely so, you know, I think these intangibles of our existence,
00:12:28people don't take as extremely important.
00:12:31Everything in our space has its own energy,
00:12:34and that's why people take a lot of time in determining what your physical space looks like,
00:12:41and what are the words that we are using.
00:12:46For example, one of the participants at the consultation,
00:12:52representing the Woodbrook residents, she also made the point
00:12:56that the names of the streets in Woodbrook represent generals from the Boer War.
00:13:02You know what I mean?
00:13:03But yet you don't have a street called Pat Bishop,
00:13:08or, you know, people who, when your children ask about them,
00:13:13they can say something that would actually give our children something to emulate,
00:13:19give our citizens something to be proud about.
00:13:22And therefore, if we continue to just believe that we are preserving history
00:13:29by keeping these names, like a lot of people fear,
00:13:33no, that's our history, but that's not all of our history.
00:13:37You know, that's a part of our history,
00:13:41and there are different ways to preserve your history.
00:13:43Our history is preserved in books, we can still teach it.
00:13:45But what is the importance of your physical space?
00:13:50You know, the one that you continue to exist in.
00:13:52We don't have to keep a colonial past in our physical space,
00:13:58and a lot of it represents a lot of violence.
00:14:01A lot of the persons whose names, after which the spaces have been named,
00:14:07when we find out their history,
00:14:09it's not persons that we would have as a nation,
00:14:13selected to name our spaces after.
00:14:17So therefore, we really need to think carefully as we grow as a nation,
00:14:23and people are of this view that we believe,
00:14:26because we represent the Emancipation Support Committee,
00:14:29that all names must change to African names.
00:14:31That's not what we are suggesting at all.
00:14:35It's reflected of all our peoples and those of us, each of the groups,
00:14:39that feel that they would like to see how, can indicate,
00:14:43how they would love to see themselves represented in our physical space.
00:14:47You feel that some of the problems that we are experiencing among our youth today,
00:14:51some of the challenges,
00:14:53you feel that it is because some of them don't understand their history,
00:14:58so they have taken a certain path?
00:15:02It is so obvious.
00:15:05Maybe it's not as obvious as opposed to us.
00:15:08Of course, you see, we have the world,
00:15:12and that is even part of that old colonial heritage.
00:15:16We have inherited and allowed to imbue into our space
00:15:21this culture of violence and power.
00:15:25And that is what is in the absence of anything else,
00:15:31of anything else that is substantial,
00:15:34of anything that finds meaning in the hearts and minds of our young people,
00:15:39they buy into that culture as the only thing that has meaning.
00:15:43Because it is not just, as you say, a local phenomenon.
00:15:47It is an international phenomenon,
00:15:49and it is demonstrated in the highest levels of society,
00:15:53where people who we are supposed to emulate,
00:15:57that sense of, we have to continue to have that power,
00:16:03and be willing to do anything to get it.
00:16:07And therefore, that is also being penetrated down
00:16:12into the ground level of the society, the grassroots level.
00:16:18But if there is an alternative discussion,
00:16:21or there is an alternative culture,
00:16:25this is a culture of who I am,
00:16:27the culture of what is important to me,
00:16:29the culture of how I connect with my spirituality,
00:16:31and therefore my being is not just linked to this,
00:16:37what you would call it,
00:16:39external force of materialism and violence and power,
00:16:43and therefore I have to,
00:16:45the only way I can find meaning for myself is within that framework.
00:16:50If young people can also find meaning
00:16:54within the sense of self,
00:16:57within the sense of value of who I am,
00:17:01the importance of my connection with my spirituality,
00:17:05with those unseen energies,
00:17:07with my culture, so that I have meaning,
00:17:10then I don't search for meaning and importance of myself
00:17:15in that culture of materialism, violence, and power.
00:17:19All right, so how do you respond to people who may say,
00:17:23all right, so if we start doing this now, where will it end?
00:17:28So is it that we're going to have to change all the streets
00:17:32in Port of Spain and other parts of the country?
00:17:35Is it that we have to maybe consider renaming Trinidad and Tobago?
00:17:39You know how people think, yeah?
00:17:42So if we start now, where does this end?
00:17:47You know, as a republic country,
00:17:49we have to, of course, put the measures in place
00:17:52and we begin to identify the things that are significant to us.
00:17:57I mean, it's a long process.
00:17:59Nobody's going to get up tomorrow and see all things are changed.
00:18:02So we have, and there have been,
00:18:05the document that was submitted by the organization,
00:18:10and the Caribbean Freedom Project,
00:18:15as part of a civil society committee that was formed,
00:18:20but we didn't do this on our own.
00:18:22We had, you know, great minds like Dr. Brenti Samaru
00:18:25and others who come together to help us create that document.
00:18:29And it goes through in a lot of detail
00:18:31all of the different significant names,
00:18:34what the history of those names are,
00:18:37and therefore why we should reconsider naming them.
00:18:39So specific spaces, both here in Trinidad and Tobago,
00:18:43have been identified, their history given.
00:18:45So there is a document that we can work through.
00:18:48We have been calling, I mean,
00:18:50I think the most vocal call has been for
00:18:53the removal of the Statue of Columbus
00:18:55and its replacement with a monument to the First Peoples.
00:19:00And we have also been calling for a very long time
00:19:05for that Oxford Street to be renamed Pommie Tourist Street.
00:19:08So those are the two, let us say,
00:19:10most critical calls coming from
00:19:13the Emancipation Support Committee now.
00:19:15Of course, the removal of any space that is named Victor,
00:19:19because of the whole international response to this person,
00:19:22and therefore it's almost a shame
00:19:25that we are still naming spaces after him.
00:19:28So that there are some significant calls,
00:19:33and they are linked with international calls around the same.
00:19:36This whole removal of Columbus is not just something
00:19:39that's happening in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:19:41People have come to the point where they realize
00:19:43that this is not a person to be venerated.
00:19:45And yes, we can keep him somewhere if people want to keep him.
00:19:49I am not necessarily sold on that,
00:19:51but if you think it's important.
00:19:53But he should not be in a open physical space of veneration.
00:19:57And therefore we need to put and replace it
00:20:01with someone who represents the First Peoples,
00:20:05and their struggle, and their battle.
00:20:07Because you know what I thought,
00:20:09when I learned from some of the comments
00:20:11that we heard at the consultation,
00:20:13people forget that part of our history,
00:20:16the history of our First Peoples,
00:20:18the history of the Africans that were enslaved here,
00:20:22the history of our indentured servant,
00:20:24the history of trauma, you know.
00:20:26People didn't come here jumping and happy,
00:20:30came here to have a good time,
00:20:32they came to toil for very minimal wages,
00:20:35and in the case of Africans, for no wage,
00:20:37to uplift the empires of another group of people.
00:20:41And people forget that.
00:20:43And therefore the First Peoples suffered,
00:20:45many of their people were killed as part of that process.
00:20:49Many of us suffered and the trauma is still existing,
00:20:53and we still have to continue to deal with it.
00:20:55And part of our history was struggle,
00:20:59to be here to live today and be so proud,
00:21:01and able to continue to survive.
00:21:05But it was based on the struggle of all of our peoples,
00:21:09and those that came before,
00:21:11enduring a lot of hardship,
00:21:13and we keep forgetting that that is part of the history too.
00:21:16Yeah, Madam Chair.
00:21:18You see, and our people, those of those struggles,
00:21:21must be, those are the people we have to venerate.
00:21:25Madam Chair, I don't...
00:21:27I don't intend to detain you for much longer,
00:21:31but I know in your presentation on Wednesday,
00:21:36and when you spoke about Kwame Ture,
00:21:40and the renaming of Observatory Street and so on,
00:21:43well, you came under a verbal attack,
00:21:46and some have since said,
00:21:48well, that is a reason why we should,
00:21:51you know, should be making these changes in society.
00:21:57Because you see, the response,
00:22:01people can only respond to things from where they are,
00:22:04from what they understand,
00:22:07and as the gentleman eventually said in his presentation,
00:22:10that's what he learned in school.
00:22:12So the point is that in his own mind,
00:22:15that is where he is, and everybody in the room,
00:22:19even when he came to make his presentation,
00:22:21were appalled.
00:22:23I mean, he called the first people savages, you know.
00:22:27He said, he refused to call him Kwame Ture,
00:22:30he was a troublemaker, you know.
00:22:32So that...
00:22:34Why would we want to have him as a hero?
00:22:40The point is, that is the exact point that we are making.
00:22:45And he's not the only person.
00:22:48There are many of our citizens who are still lost
00:22:52in that miseducation
00:22:56that would have been delivered on to us
00:22:58when the colonials determined what our history should be,
00:23:03and how the stories should be told.
00:23:06So now we have the responsibility to find out
00:23:09what the truth was, and to tell our children the truth.
00:23:13So that they now can grow up with a better understanding
00:23:16of who they are and their experience.
00:23:18And one of the things that I really want us to stop
00:23:21referring to Africans who came here as slaves.
00:23:24You know, because when we introduce our children
00:23:27to their history, they meet African people as slaves.
00:23:30We were not slaves, we were enslaved persons.
00:23:33And I think that is a...
00:23:35So all of that is part of the decolonization,
00:23:37the languaging, you know.
00:23:39We have to stop saying, they brought slaves here.
00:23:42No, they brought persons who they enslaved.
00:23:45You know, so when you refer to yourself as an enslaved person,
00:23:48it's a different thing as if you were born into this world
00:23:51to be a slave, you know what I'm saying?
00:23:54So little things like that help to change perceptions
00:23:57and understandings, and help to bring the kind
00:24:00of transformation in the society that is required.
00:24:03Yeah, Madam Chair, you said earlier,
00:24:05it may not be an easy process,
00:24:07but it may be a necessary process, right?

00:43:00with President of the Single Fathers
00:43:02Association, Rondell Fields.
00:43:04Mr. Fields, thank you very much for staying with
00:43:06us this morning. And Mr. Fields, let me
00:43:08and people would know, this is not
00:43:10the first time that we are having such
00:43:12a conversation concerning
00:43:14child maintenance. You have been speaking about
00:43:16this for years now.
00:43:18I'm shocked that you have not become
00:43:20hoarse as yet.
00:43:22Because you have been speaking about this
00:43:24all over the place
00:43:26for so many years. But has
00:43:28there been any movement
00:43:30at all? Read this
00:43:32issue that you continue to speak
00:43:34about and give exposure to.
00:43:38Malone, there's been movement.
00:43:40But there's not
00:43:42enough movement Malone.
00:43:44If I had told you the
00:43:46statistics that I had
00:43:48just told you and it pertained
00:43:50to women, even you as
00:43:52a man might have cared more.
00:43:54And that is our
00:43:56problem. We do not
00:43:58care with issues pertaining
00:44:00to males. Whether they be
00:44:02boys, whether they be men.
00:44:04Those stats I give you were
00:44:06catastrophic. Can you
00:44:08picture a young boy next
00:44:10to a young girl now and
00:44:12based on our current trajectory with murder
00:44:14he is 90.7%
00:44:16more likely
00:44:18to be murdered?
00:44:20Can you picture a young boy
00:44:22next to a young girl right
00:44:24now? I just say young boy because we don't care about men.
00:44:26We have a little more empathy for boys.
00:44:28Next to them side by
00:44:30side and know that he is now
00:44:32with the trajectory with suicide
00:44:3484% more likely
00:44:36to take his own life?
00:44:38A young boy
00:44:40next to a young girl
00:44:42with the trajectory we have now is
00:44:4494% based on the statistics
00:44:46from the Ministry of Social Welfare
00:44:48more likely to be homeless in the capital?
00:44:50Why
00:44:52don't we care? Why aren't we
00:44:54concerned? And when
00:44:56we are not concerned this translates
00:44:58into exactly what happened to Mr.
00:45:00Mohammed. You are just an ex-man.
00:45:02Go and find out. Nobody will care about
00:45:04you. Do you know the emptiness you feel?
00:45:06He could have taken his life.
00:45:08That's all you could do after.
00:45:10If you've done everything else
00:45:12they say that the justice system is supposed
00:45:14to work and you have
00:45:16fallen. You didn't do anything.
00:45:18You just became sick. The judge
00:45:20himself could end up sick at some point God
00:45:22forbid. Same thing that happened to
00:45:24him. He didn't do anything. He was a truck driver
00:45:26one day doing so much for his daughter
00:45:28doing so much that he could pay the
00:45:30maintenance only to be diagnosed
00:45:32with heart failure and
00:45:34renal failure. Comes to the
00:45:36court and ask the court to hear
00:45:38his case even though the mother wasn't
00:45:40appearing. Ask the court to
00:45:42stop this maintenance because it will
00:45:44now put him in a position of imprisonment.
00:45:46Presented his documents of his
00:45:48ailments. Also presented
00:45:50the documents that he's in receipt of a disability
00:45:52grant that states that he cannot
00:45:54work. And if he works
00:45:56he will lose the grant.
00:45:58And then in magistrate
00:46:00dismisses what he says.
00:46:02But what you are saying to
00:46:04us here, Mr. Fields, this is a
00:46:06frightening state of affairs. And I'm
00:46:08just wondering that
00:46:10other men who are
00:46:12experiencing or who have
00:46:14disabilities and are having
00:46:16great difficulty
00:46:18to pay these
00:46:20bills, if I can call it that, child
00:46:22maintenance, then what
00:46:24are their options? It seems to me
00:46:26very, very limited. You're
00:46:28facing jail.
00:46:30Correct. Your option is
00:46:32either go to jail
00:46:34or unfortunately pass
00:46:36away at some point like Mr. Hanson
00:46:38and be free
00:46:40of the stresses of the mind.
00:46:42And that cannot be the
00:46:44option. That
00:46:46cannot be the option. And that is
00:46:48what I am saying. There are other
00:46:50options. There are things that can be done.
00:46:52There are things that could be legislated.
00:46:54Things that can be put in place.
00:46:56Things that can be reviewed when magistrates
00:46:58don't do what they're supposed to.
00:47:00That is how you serve justice
00:47:02in a society. That is how you bring
00:47:04equity about in a society.
00:47:06They would have heard this story.
00:47:08I'm sure they're hearing this story now
00:47:10after his death. It is what you do
00:47:12now shows how much you matter.
00:47:14Shows how much you care.
00:47:16Shows how much his life matters.
00:47:18It is what you
00:47:20do as a government. It is what you do
00:47:22now as a parliament. It is
00:47:24what you do now as an advocate.
00:47:26Shows how
00:47:28much you are concerned when men
00:47:30find themselves in this situation.
00:47:32We have persons that we've put in places
00:47:34like the Equal Opportunity Commission, like Dr.
00:47:36Gabrielle Hussein, that was on television
00:47:38the other day saying that that is not a
00:47:40concern.
00:47:42When the issue on a popular show
00:47:44that they were on was raised by a female
00:47:46co-host about the suicide
00:47:48rates of men and the decline of men,
00:47:50that was saying that is not their issue.
00:47:54But who holds a position of such esteem?
00:47:56Look at the numbers of suicide
00:47:58I just gave you. If you were in
00:48:00a position like the Equal Opportunity Commission,
00:48:02you are not concerned with male-related
00:48:04issues? Of suicide of that
00:48:06kind of percentage, 80.8%
00:48:08in five years?
00:48:10Numbers of 461
00:48:12men out of
00:48:14570 people?
00:48:16You are unconcerned?
00:48:18And therein lies
00:48:20the problem.
00:48:22Therein lies our problem.
00:48:24How can this trickle down
00:48:26to the judiciary and trickle down
00:48:28to the social welfare and trickle down
00:48:30to all these agencies if
00:48:32we are positioning persons in the top that
00:48:34don't see those things as issues
00:48:36in places where they are
00:48:38supposed to be gender
00:48:40impartial?
00:48:44Therein lies
00:48:46many of our problems.
00:48:48And until it's rectified,
00:48:50until we find a way to correct
00:48:52it, until we show concern,
00:48:54until we hold people accountable,
00:48:56these things
00:48:58will not change.
00:49:00What do you do in situations like this?
00:49:02We don't ask ourselves sometimes why men are
00:49:04becoming so violent because
00:49:06they possibly don't see a non-violent
00:49:08option.
00:49:10They possibly don't have a non-violent
00:49:12alternative because
00:49:14he chose a non-violent alternative
00:49:16is to go to the court. But if he did
00:49:18say, boy, the only way I could end this is to end
00:49:20her life. Thank God he didn't.
00:49:22What would have happened? Thank God we
00:49:24intervened and spoke to the mother and brought her
00:49:26to her senses and she decided, okay,
00:49:28I want to help too. And she allowed him
00:49:30to see his child after years.
00:49:32He could have died
00:49:34and never get to see his son again
00:49:36if we didn't intervene.
00:49:38Talk to that.
00:49:40Talk to that
00:49:42for me, Mr. Fields.
00:49:44You
00:49:46have experienced over
00:49:48the years where
00:49:50men would have felt
00:49:52that they were faced
00:49:54with so much hopelessness
00:49:56that they would have
00:49:58resorted to
00:50:00violence?
00:50:04But of course,
00:50:06when you have no way out,
00:50:08and you seek redress where you are told
00:50:10to seek redress, and when you go to
00:50:12that place, you're not only turned away,
00:50:14you are embarrassed,
00:50:16you are emasculated,
00:50:18you are disrespected.
00:50:20Which will only
00:50:22add anger to your
00:50:24emotional struggles already.
00:50:26What do you think
00:50:28some men who don't have the relevant
00:50:30emotional intelligence will do?
00:50:32Or if
00:50:34they are violently, if they were
00:50:36bred in a culture that they've seen
00:50:38violence, where the man getting
00:50:40shot down the road is a normal thing,
00:50:42what will they
00:50:44do?
00:50:46They will seek justice in their
00:50:48own way.
00:50:50That is why it is so important
00:50:52for our arms of justice and
00:50:54service to be well-oiled and
00:50:56functioning so that these actions
00:50:58don't take place.
00:51:00Mr. Fields, I just have a minute again.

00:51:04How do organizations
00:51:06such as yours,
00:51:08how do you get the authorities
00:51:10to listen and understand
00:51:12how serious the situation is
00:51:14and what the impact has been on
00:51:16society? How do you do that?
00:51:18When the people
00:51:20listen, Marlon, when the people
00:51:22hear, when you all give us the opportunity to
00:51:24put this out there and men and women
00:51:26stand and work together and
00:51:28see injustice, whether it's whatever
00:51:30gender, see hardship, whether it's whatever
00:51:32gender, see that men are dying in
00:51:34record numbers and as women that you must care
00:51:36because you birth men. And we
00:51:38as men and women, women find their bosoms
00:51:40and men find their balls and
00:51:42stand together and demand on governments
00:51:44and parliaments to do what is right
00:51:46in their society. That is
00:51:48how we get them to listen. This year is our
00:51:50election year. This is the year they're going to
00:51:52listen. So I
00:51:54call on men and women to do
00:51:56so. They can't just be about
00:51:58your natural resources
00:52:00and gas and oil. It has to be about
00:52:02your human resource. It has to be about your
00:52:04social life. It has to be about your community life.
00:52:06It has to be about your community existence.
00:52:08That's what our life is about.
00:52:10And we have to make demands of
00:52:12those who want to bring their manifestos
00:52:14to include things that will give us
00:52:16a better life in this country
00:52:18apart from all the economical aspect
00:52:20of it, but as much
00:52:22when it considers the social aspects
00:52:24and well-being of our life.

01:25:58So, of course, the WCPL finals
01:26:00was played last evening
01:26:01down at the Brian Lauer Cricket Academy
01:26:04between the Barbados Royals
01:26:05and Trinidad and Tobago Knight Riders.
01:26:07Well, unfortunately for us here in Trinidad and Tobago,
01:26:10the TKR ladies were outplayed by the Royals,
01:26:13who successfully defended their crown
01:26:15to become two-time champions of the WCPL.
01:26:19Just to give you some quick details of the match,
01:26:21TKR batted first and made 93-for-8 in their 20 overs
01:26:27with Sheikha Pandey making 28
01:26:29while Aaliyah Allain took four wickets.
01:26:32In reply, the Royals got to 94-for-6
01:26:34with five overs to spare,
01:26:36thus becoming the 2024 WCPL champions.
01:26:40Let's hear now from the captains.
01:26:43I'll just say it's not the end result I wanted,
01:26:46but I'm not gonna lie.
01:26:48I'm very proud of the team that we have.
01:26:50You know, we've worked really hard.
01:26:51It's very hard to come back from losing two games
01:26:55to the finals.
01:26:56I mean, I'm very proud.
01:26:57Yeah, you guys have been resilient.
01:26:59And of course, the world is so pleased to see you back.
01:27:02You back with runs.
01:27:03You back with some tremendous catches in the field.
01:27:05How excited are you for the upcoming World Cup?
01:27:07I'm definitely excited.
01:27:09It's actually time to put back on the show.

01:27:14How do you rate your own performance this tournament?
01:27:16Yeah, I think I had a pretty good time.
01:27:19Obviously, as an all-rounder,
01:27:20I tried my best to be able to contribute
01:27:22with the bat and the ball.
01:27:23So I think it was pretty good that I was able
01:27:25to get some stories at the beginning of the tournament.
01:27:27Would have probably had to get a bit more runs
01:27:29towards the end.
01:27:30But yeah, still happy that I was able to
01:27:32do something with the ball as well.
01:27:34Yeah, we saw you take a couple screamers
01:27:36and catches as well in the field.
01:27:38But I think it was really your captaincy
01:27:40that was really outstanding.
01:27:41Great strategy, great awareness in the field.
01:27:43Do you feel you're developing even more as a captain?
01:27:45Yeah, I think I'm learning a lot.
01:27:47I've obviously had the opportunity to captain
01:27:49the West Indies team for the last few years.
01:27:51And I'm definitely someone who is really open
01:27:53to just continuing to learn.
01:27:55So I'm really happy with the way we've been able
01:27:57to go about this year.
01:27:59Obviously, going back to bat now.
01:28:01And yeah, it definitely means a lot to me.
01:28:03And I know the Barbados supporters as well.
01:28:07All right, congratulations.
01:28:09And now we have part two from our sit-down
01:28:11with the Barbados Royals' captain, Hayley Matthews,
01:28:14who won the WCPL Player of the Tournament Award.
01:28:18All right, Hayley.
01:28:19First of all, thanks for having a chat with us.
01:28:21So just tell us, firstly, a little bit
01:28:23about how you started playing cricket.
01:28:25Yeah, well, I started as a young girl.
01:28:27Not that I remember.
01:28:29But my father told me him and my brother
01:28:31just used to be outside on a daily basis
01:28:34playing a bit of cricket in the backyard.
01:28:36And one day, I decided I wanted to come out and join.
01:28:39And yeah, he said I started to enjoy it a lot.
01:28:42I wanted to come out every day.
01:28:44I wanted to just hit balls and play with the two of them.
01:28:47And he realized that I kind of started
01:28:50to find a love for the game
01:28:51and put me into a junior club in Barbados.
01:28:54So I read on a profile that you would have captained
01:28:57your school's team with boys at 11 or 12 years old.
01:29:01What was that experience like?
01:29:03Did the boys show any sort of malice or animosity
01:29:07towards a girl being their captain or anything like that?
01:29:09What was that experience like?
01:29:10Yeah, it was pretty cool.
01:29:11Yeah, it was pretty cool.
01:29:12But no, they took me in really well.
01:29:15I think if there's one thing for sure,
01:29:17primary school and when I was a young and a 13 girl
01:29:20captaining those two teams,
01:29:23all the guys, I think they respected me as a cricketer.
01:29:25That was one thing for sure.
01:29:27And yeah, they definitely took me into the team,
01:29:30didn't give me a hard time.
01:29:31And yeah, I had a great time playing at that age group
01:29:34and learning a lot, not only about my game,
01:29:37but about leadership as well.
01:29:38So you've been on the international scene for 10 years now.
01:29:42You debuted at 16, was it?
01:29:44You've accomplished so much in that 10 years,
01:29:47but you're just now hitting your prime.
01:29:50What more are you looking to achieve for your career?
01:29:55Well, I guess the way I'm performing right now,
01:29:58I'm pretty happy with, but I always want to get better
01:30:02and continue to be better.
01:30:04I think now as captain of the West Indies as well,
01:30:07I have a big role that I can play
01:30:09outside of just affecting my own personal game.
01:30:12And yeah, for me it's about inspiring the girls within our team
01:30:16and being able to set a really big example.
01:30:18But at the same time,
01:30:20I think with the way women's sport is growing now,
01:30:22we know within the team that we can have such a big impact
01:30:25on just young girls growing up within the islands.
01:30:28And then being able to watch us and see that women's cricket
01:30:32is a proper career that you can have now
01:30:34and you can make a living out of it.
01:30:36The same way that I was able to fall in love with the game
01:30:39as a young girl, I hope to inspire young girls
01:30:42to want to come out and play the game of cricket
01:30:44and fall in love with it.
01:30:45And I think the best way to do that is to continue to go out there
01:30:48and perform and continue to do well.
01:30:50And yeah, every time I step onto the field,
01:30:53that's what I try to do.
01:30:54And I think the accolades and the records and everything
01:30:57will come with those performances.
01:30:59So you mentioned how women's sport is growing
01:31:01and cricket in particular is growing really fast at the moment.
01:31:04As someone who's played in the major T20 leagues around the world,
01:31:07WPL, WBBL, WCPL now, and in the 100 as well,
01:31:12how does it compare in the West Indies
01:31:14as compared to Australia, India, England?
01:31:17Yeah, obviously they've had massive programs in place
01:31:21for a very long time.
01:31:22So I think it's expected to see them probably being further ahead
01:31:26when it comes to the standard of their cricket
01:31:29at the 100 and at the WBBL in Australia.
01:31:34I think what we have done really well here,
01:31:37especially implementing this WCPL,
01:31:39is I think they've made sure the standard of the cricket
01:31:42is as good as it can be.
01:31:44And I think that's one of the bigger reasonings
01:31:45for having the three teams rather than having five or six.
01:31:49And it is getting better, I think, from year one
01:31:51when we had that tournament in St. Kitts
01:31:53to the standard that the cricket was at last year.
01:31:56We saw 150, 160 being scored in regular games.
01:32:00Even in the finals, I think we sat around 170,
01:32:03and we only managed to win by about 5 to 10 runs.
01:32:06So it just shows that the girls are improving.
01:32:08The standard of the internationals we have coming in now as well,
01:32:12they're making a massive difference within the games
01:32:14and how they're going.
01:32:15And yeah, this year things are going really well.
01:32:18I think the wickets have definitely been bowler-friendly
01:32:20over the first few games.
01:32:22But I think over the last two nights as well,
01:32:25you've seen the scores going up with the later games
01:32:27and the dew affecting the wickets
01:32:29and helping them to slide on a bit more.
01:32:31So yeah, I think the way it's progressed in the last two years
01:32:34is the biggest thing.
01:32:36And once we're able to continue getting better and better each year,
01:32:39especially when it comes to the standard of it,
01:32:41we'll find ourselves catching up eventually
01:32:43even if it takes a little while.
01:32:45So what do you think we could do here in the region,
01:32:48in the Caribbean, to promote and grow women's cricket a little bit more?
01:32:52I think just try to put programs in place where you can.
01:32:56I think one of the biggest things that I've noticed
01:32:59going to Australia and England is that a lot of these superstars
01:33:02within their game have started at a very young age
01:33:05because they've had opportunities from the time they were at school
01:33:09to go out and play cricket and be in proper programs
01:33:12and come up in proper systems.
01:33:15And that's obviously one of our bigger problems here in the Caribbean.
01:33:18We have so many girls starting out
01:33:20because they've played on the streets with the boys
01:33:22or they just got into cricket, like myself as well,
01:33:25but they didn't necessarily have any proper female programs
01:33:28to come up and come through.
01:33:30And I think the faster we can implement some of those programs
01:33:33and get young girls not only playing cricket
01:33:36but feeling safe and getting to play with girls their age
01:33:39and probably not having to get in with the boys.
01:33:42Don't get me wrong, I think playing with the boys
01:33:44is one of the best things that's happened to me
01:33:46because it was able to challenge me right up.
01:33:49But that can also scare away young girls as well.
01:33:52So I think the more programs we're able to put in place,
01:33:55the more schools we're able to get into
01:33:57and the more investment we're able to put into the women's game overall
01:34:00I think is the biggest thing in helping the growth and moving forward.
01:34:04So Hayley, you are ranked in the top 10 rankings
01:34:07for batting, bowling and all-round in both formats
01:34:10of the white ball game for West Indies.
01:34:12What makes Hayley Matthews so consistent at her game?
01:34:17I think these days I tend to understand my game a lot better.
01:34:22I think that over the last two years or so
01:34:25I have taken up a role of putting a lot of responsibility on my shoulder
01:34:30and I guess as the captain I think something like that may hamper some people
01:34:35but I seem to thrive under it in some way
01:34:39and I've enjoyed being a leader within the team
01:34:42and setting a really big example.
01:34:44I think that I've been fortunate to have a lot more experiences
01:34:49than the other girls given the opportunity to go and play in the Big Bash
01:34:52and the 100 from the time I was 16 or 17.
01:34:55So I think my experience over all those years
01:34:58has helped me to understand my game a lot more.
01:35:02And then when you add that with the responsibility that I do have within the team
01:35:06it seems like they've been a good combination for me to perform consistently.

01:41:00Of course, the tournament began last night with the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots beating the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in a last ball thriller.

01:41:29The biggest party in sport is back as Season 12 of the Caribbean Premier League is set to bowl off tonight at the North Sound Ground in Antigua.
01:41:37Fittingly, the first match will take place in Antigua as the freshly named franchise.
01:41:42The Falcons will make their debut as the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, formerly the Jamaica Taloas.
01:41:48The Taloas won it three times prior, most recently in 2022, but the Falcons will want to write a new chapter under their new name.
01:41:56Despite the name and location change, the action and excitement will be just as great as the five other franchises are aiming to dethrone the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
01:42:06But to get that opportunity, neither the Falcons nor the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots will want to get off to a losing start.

01:42:42Morning and morning to the viewership. Beautiful morning here in St. Kitts. I'm happy to be on the program.
01:42:47Yeah. Well, Mr. Board, before we go into the men's aspect of the game,
01:42:52I want us to speak a little bit about what you have seen over the past few days concerning the women's game.
01:43:01What's your perspective on that?
01:43:04I think it was an exciting tournament. It's gotten bigger.
01:43:06It's obviously the players and the skill sets are better. They showed a lot of tenacity.
01:43:10Of course, TKR didn't win it in the final, but the women's got there.
01:43:14And it seems to be a Barbados-Royals-Trinbago-Knight Riders-female.
01:43:19That's going to be the rivalry over the next coming years.
01:43:21As we've seen it through the last three championships, both teams were there.
01:43:26One win, Trinbago-Knight Riders winning, Barbados winning, and then Barbados coming back and winning again.
01:43:31So that's a nice rivalry being built there. And every league needs that sort of rivalry,
01:43:35where two teams are challenging each other. And it's been a good tournament.
01:43:39The ladies played some fantastic cricket. It was exciting.
01:43:42We've got more crowds this time, and I suspect over the next coming years,
01:43:45you're going to see it get larger and larger. Looking forward to it. Much excitement.
01:43:49Yeah, I thought it was. I agree with you. It was very, very exciting yesterday.
01:43:53I thought it was a nail-biting game. I was at the edge of my seat looking at the game yesterday.
01:44:03There was an increase in the crowd, but I think it is safe to say that the CPL,
01:44:10and I suspect other people in the region, there is still need for greater support for the women's game.
01:44:17You agree?
01:44:19A hundred percent. Obviously, the women's game in sports globally is growing and getting large,
01:44:25large numbers coming in, particularly women's soccer. Now women's cricket is going to get to that same place.
01:44:31And it's a fast-growing area that needs to be, you have to pay a lot of attention to it.
01:44:35There are a lot of females, 50% of the population is females globally.
01:44:39And a lot are playing sports, and we want to encourage women to play sports.
01:44:43Sports is a great avenue for expression, for being able to intermingle with different cultures
01:44:48and understand that winning is not just everything, but the way in which you go about it.
01:44:53When you play sports, you tend to lose more than you win over periods.
01:44:56And that's why championships are so important to people, because it's difficult to win one.
01:45:00But you have to understand that when you have issues and you fall down, it's about how you get up.
01:45:05So sports teach you a lot of things. And it's great that people are coming out to support,
01:45:09but we want to get them to support more, both corporate and as well, of course, the population.
01:45:13Come out and look at the daughters and wives and girlfriends. Come and have a look at them and support them.
01:45:19They can play, and they play quality cricket with very good skill sets.
01:45:23Yeah, and I think that's a great point that you're making, quality cricket,
01:45:27because I think what is a bit unfortunate is that we in the, and I suspect in other parts of the world too,
01:45:35is that we are going to compare the women's game to the men's game.
01:45:39But what I saw over the past few days, I saw the passion, I saw the experience,
01:45:44and I saw the commitment and I saw the hard work of the women cricketers.
01:45:50You know, that's an interesting comment.
01:45:52Yesterday I was having a conversation with Phil Simmons about the players and with Pollard and Bravo and company.
01:45:58And one of the endearing things was that the girls are beginning to express themselves.
01:46:03When they get wickets, you can see them expressing their personalities, because sport is also about personalities.
01:46:08Remember, it's still entertainment. It drives people to come out, families to come out,
01:46:13and people want to understand who is that person that is performing, type of individual.
01:46:17And it's good to see that they're comfortable around the cameras now.
01:46:20They feel more relaxed as a team and they can perform in front of crowds,
01:46:24because international sport and franchise sport is about doing it in front of a person, of people.
01:46:29And they're getting past the nerves and they're getting past all of that to get to the point of expression,
01:46:34which is great for any sport.
01:46:36Yeah, I think too, as I was saying this morning, I think that we have started in particular,
01:46:44as it relates to the TKR women's team, I think that we have started to see some stars emerging,
01:46:53which I think is very promising.
01:46:57I think it's important that we want to drive home who the personalities are, what their backgrounds are,
01:47:02where they came from, inspirational stories, not just about the success on the field, but how they got there.
01:47:08I think that's the important thing when you want to, from a sporting aspect, you want to get that.
01:47:12We get a lot of bad news only.
01:47:14What we want to do is, through sport, how people got there, what is the drive that gets somebody to be successful?
01:47:20What tenacity is needed? How do you train in spite of issues?
01:47:25Some things talk about facilities and so on, but you have to understand the personalities,
01:47:28who are the people that support them behind the scenes?
01:47:30Those are the interesting things that will inspire another young girl to want to be there
01:47:35and feel that with some hard work, I can get there.
01:47:37That's really, for me, the success story that we're getting better at doing that
01:47:41and better at expressing who we are as a people,
01:47:44expressing how you get there as an athlete, as a professional, and the people behind you.

01:53:00So I think it is safe to say that all eyes are now on your team.
01:53:05And when I say all eyes on your team in Trinidad and Tobago.

01:53:09So what can we expect from TKR this time around?
01:53:13Well, I think what you said before would be quality cricket.
01:53:16We have a quality team.
01:53:17I mean, you know, we took our time in trying to pick and handpick the type of cricketers that we wanted.
01:53:22Cricketers that could act in various rules because obviously it's a short game.
01:53:26But the rules of a player has to change in a T20 game based on circumstances.
01:53:31You have to assess really quickly and adjust really quickly.
01:53:33And the players that we have, we feel have enough experience, enough firepower, enough intelligence to play quality cricket.

01:54:05Yeah, tomorrow is our first game against the Patriots.
01:54:08So we expect a good crowd.
01:54:11It looks like it's going to be a full house.
01:54:13And of course, we kick off our campaign with great expectations.
01:54:17Now we have to move from expectations into action.
01:54:20And we've been preparing well.
01:54:22We had a good camp in Trinidad prior to coming here.
01:54:24Some players have played for the West Indies.
01:54:26Mr. Puran and Mr. Akil Usain arrived yesterday.
01:54:29Jason Roy came in the day before.
01:54:31We've got another player coming today.
01:54:32So guys have been playing cricket globally.
01:54:34Some are assembling now and some are assembling in Trinidad.
01:54:37And we're all set.
01:54:38We've had a good two days there.
01:54:40We got a really good workout yesterday.
01:54:42We have another one at 4 p.m. today.
01:54:44And hopefully that will set the tone for us going forward to be able to execute some of the plans that we have in place.
01:54:49And is it safe to say that the gelling process has been going well too?
01:54:55Extremely well.
01:54:56There are a bunch of guys that know each other.
01:54:58A lot of trainees here.
01:54:59Last time we had an all-force tournament for the Trinidadians and a couple of the island guys.
01:55:04The night before we had something else.
01:55:06Today we're going to have another thing.
01:55:07So what we consider the internal Olympics.
01:55:10We had a football draft two nights ago where we split the team.
01:55:13So we have things that happen internally where the competition is.
01:55:17They're all competitive guys by nature.
01:55:19They're professional sportsmen.
01:55:20So in every field they're very competitive.
01:55:22But we have these internal tournaments that we keep the buzz going.
01:55:25And, of course, they get closer in different areas.
01:55:27Be able to work with each other as teammates.
01:55:29Not only from cricket but off the field as well.
01:55:31And that's part of our gelling process.
01:55:33Yeah. Well, let me tell you, Mr. Board.
01:55:35Judging from what you have told us this morning here, we feel optimistic, you know.
01:55:39And feel that you're going to bring home the trophy, you know.
01:55:44Well, that's the plan.
01:55:47We didn't get it until the last little.
01:55:49So we still have four trophies.
01:55:52We got a silver last season.
01:55:53We want to get number five this season.
01:55:54It's our 10th anniversary.
01:55:56So we'd like to do it in style and get five out of 10.
01:55:59And that would be an accomplishment in any sport.
01:56:01So we're going for it.
01:56:02And that's the plan.
01:56:03We've worked hard over the last couple of months.
01:56:05We've prepared well.
01:56:06It's now up to the players and us as support staff to make sure things run smoothly.
01:56:11Happen on time.
01:56:12Happen the way we want it.
01:56:13And hopefully bring some joy to people.
01:56:14Yeah.
