00:10:09The President has in mind for Mr. Scotland,
00:10:12so he says, according to the prime minister,
00:10:15there are five areas that I expect that Minister Scotland would focus on,
00:10:19not the least of which is the police and, of course,
00:10:23offender management, management of illegal immigrants,
00:10:27drug trafficking and money laundering, along with drug enforcement,
00:10:31he says, as we try to do more in national security
00:10:35security and so much trouble is coming to us from the police, I as Prime Minister decided
00:10:41that the Minister, and he's speaking about Hines now, Minister Fitzgerald Hines, was
00:10:46being distracted by too many other things when we wanted more focusing on the police
00:10:52at this particular point in time.
00:10:55All of us want certain things to happen.
00:10:58As Prime Minister, I have made the assessment that we need greater focus on the police separate
00:11:03and apart from national security in general, and therefore I put that assignment in the
00:11:08Ministry of National Security with an experienced person to do that, the Prime Minister said.
00:11:14So Scotland is an attorney with over 24 years standing, commonly referred to as Scotty,
00:11:20and he's 57 years old.
00:11:24And as we would have told you earlier, well, Mr. Scotland has responded and he is to give
00:11:31up his private practice on assuming the ministerial position.
00:11:34He says, I will not be in court, I will be elsewhere.
00:11:38I will be giving my 100%, and of course, Mr. Scotland takes his oath of office later on
00:11:46today.
00:11:47All right, so well, joining us this morning to discuss this issue and the wider problem
00:11:50of crime in Trinidad and Tobago is political leader of the Patriotic Front, Michaela Pandey.

00:12:00Yes, Michaela.
00:12:01It's always good to speak with you.
00:12:04Well, Michaela, yesterday a major announcement by the Prime Minister making Mr. Keith Scotland,
00:12:13the Port of Spain South MP, a minister in the Ministry of National Security, to deal
00:12:17with police issues.
00:12:20What's your take on this this morning?
00:12:23Well, I don't know that changing the guard necessarily will make too much of a change.
00:12:31What the...
00:12:32Can you hear me, my dear?
00:12:33Sorry.
00:12:34Yes, we are.
00:12:35We are hearing you, Michaela.
00:12:36Go ahead.
00:12:37Yes.
00:12:38Thank you so much.
00:12:39I don't necessarily think that that is going to make any difference unless we hear that
00:12:40the government has some kind of holistic crime plan.
00:12:41The police, the first thing that we have to look at, I know we will talk often about police
00:12:50and police corruption, but we have to look at funding for the police, the use of technology
00:12:55for the police.
00:12:56So I would be interested to hear what Mr. Keith Scotland's plans are and how he intends
00:13:03to deal with the police.
00:13:04But I feel that it's always with the government that they seem to be focused on one thing
00:13:09at one time and not looking at the entire picture.
00:13:14And when you look to solving crime, you have to look at prevention, detection, prosecution,
00:13:22and of course, rehabilitation.
00:13:23So I'd like to know what he's going to do about that and what plan he has, and perhaps
00:13:29we have discussed this before.
00:13:31I think that crime is completely out of control, and in particular, gun violence.
00:13:36And I would like to hear the Prime Minister and the National Security Council, and of
00:13:42course, our new minister, if I dare say, in charge of police, what their plan is to
00:13:48deal with gun violence in this country.
00:13:51We seem to be avoiding that topic and skirting around it and saying we're going to deal with
00:13:58the police and we're going to deal with these things independently when there's no holistic
00:14:01approach at all.
00:14:02Trinidad now is, I believe, sixth in the world in gun violence and homicide, 90% of the crimes
00:14:11are committed by guns, and we do not manufacture guns in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:14:16So we need to start being open about the conversation, where these guns are coming from, and that
00:14:21kind of thing.
00:14:22Otherwise, simply changing the gun is window dressing.
00:14:28Yeah.
00:14:29You know, recently, Michaela, following the 14 murders two weekends ago, the police were
00:14:40saying at that time that they have not or they did not lose the handle, as it were,
00:14:45on the crime situation.
00:14:46Of course, a number of people in Trinidad and Tobago believe that we, as a country,
00:14:51we have lost that handle on crime for a long time now.
00:14:56What's your perception of things?
00:14:58Well, it's how the people feel and what we, the people on the ground, are feeling, and
00:15:05I don't expect the police to say that they have lost the handle on crime.
00:15:08Obviously, they will feel to the opposite, but I don't know that there's anybody in Trinidad
00:15:13and Tobago right now that feels safe.
00:15:15It's simply being out and not feeling safe, because harm can come to you.
00:15:22You can be gunned down, as we've seen happening.
00:15:24We have at least one to three murders a day, but I think every right-thinking citizen would
00:15:30say that they don't feel safe in their own homes.
00:15:34And when you look at one of the most basic roles of a government is to provide safety
00:15:40and security for its people, it's failing, and while I'm sure Mr. Scotland, who I know
00:15:48as an attorney, all could will, it's not going to change in the morning.
00:15:54We never talk about the root causes of crime.
00:15:56We are not talking about an important issue of unemployment.
00:16:00It is not one thing independently that you can go and say, well, I'm going to sort out
00:16:08the problem with the police and expect that the problem of crime to be solved.
00:16:12It is a huge issue, and yes, we, the government, the law enforcement agencies, whatever you
00:16:20want to say, have lost the handle on crime.
00:16:23I feel like that as a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, and I think other people would agree.
00:16:28But, you know, as you say, as you're saying, it's not an easy problem to tackle, and I
00:16:36think it is safe to say that this government and successive governments, governments that
00:16:44have come before, that they have really thrown everything, billions of dollars, towards the
00:16:53problem, but yet up to today, we have not been able to deal with it.
00:16:58What is needed?
00:17:00Is it that a new type of thinking that we must adopt in order to deal with the problem
00:17:06of crime?
00:17:07The first thing is, we have had the amount of money that's been spent on reports and
00:17:15investigations, and we have had joint select committees.
00:17:20Most recently, one was made in Parliament, I believe it was on the 1st of March, reporting
00:17:25illegal firearms and gun violence by the Joint Select Committee on National Security.
00:17:30It must be chaired by Mr. Scotland, if I got that right.
00:17:36And so much information is coming forward.
00:17:39So let's start basically here.
00:17:41We were told that 1,000, I think it is 1,000, illegal firearms, criminals have fired, but
00:17:48the authorities intercept less than 5%.
00:17:51Okay.
00:17:52We hear about traffickers and guns under contraband are aided by corrupt personnel.
00:18:00Okay.
00:18:01We know this.
00:18:02You're hearing a joint select committee chaired by our new minister saying that customs and
00:18:08excise, immigration and PMT, prison service, postcard, police service, the regiment, all
00:18:14of these, they have corrupt personnel aiding traffickers and guns.
00:18:18Okay.
00:18:19I believe it was 184 who were identified were still active personnel.
00:18:26Six were discharged and they continue to hold their posts.
00:18:30I am saying that you're coming up with little solutions.
00:18:34The solutions to crime is going to be long-term, it's going to be short-term.
00:18:40You have a joint select committee telling you that illegal firearms are coming to legal
00:18:46ports because no scanner is operational in Port of Port of Spain.
00:18:52Three violent, three officers are manually inspecting 1,000 containers that enter this
00:18:58country.
00:18:59Okay.
00:19:00You have January to August, nearly 4,000 containers were scanned, were opened physically, I guess,
00:19:09out of 23,000 containers.
00:19:11Now you've got a joint select committee of parliament laying this report and the basic
00:19:18things that you can stop.
00:19:20What is the plan?
00:19:22There's too much talking and no action.
00:19:26When you look at crime, you cannot forget the economy.
00:19:30It cannot be looked at in isolation.
00:19:33We know that a lack of job opportunities is a huge problem in this country, especially
00:19:40when it comes to young people.
00:19:43What are you going to do to solve that?
00:19:46What is your plan?
00:19:47Sorry, my dear.
00:19:48Yeah, but you know, Michaela, the argument has been that a lot of big people are involved
00:19:53in crime in Trinidad and Tobago, you know, and crime is benefiting a lot of big people
00:19:59in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:20:01So how do you deal with a situation such as that?
00:20:04Well, you need legal will.
00:20:06It's as simple as that.
00:20:08It doesn't need magic or rocket science.
00:20:11Who is it, therefore, in charge of the country?
00:20:15Let's begin with that.
00:20:17Otherwise, the government is in charge of the country.
00:20:20And with a political will, anything can be solved.
00:20:26What can we say in response?
00:20:28I used to believe that when my son was five years old, crime was at its worst.
00:20:34Something like 9th murder.
00:20:36But there was a political will to deal with crime, combined with stressing social issues,
00:20:42combined looking at the economy, the state of the economy, and find cause to divide between
00:20:50the rich and the poor, which has only been growing in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:20:55So where's the political will?
00:20:57These people, I hope, are not financiers.
00:21:00I don't know.
00:21:01I don't know who they are.
00:21:03If I knew who they are, I would tell you.
00:21:05I don't know who they are.
00:21:06But everybody in Trinidad knows that crime is big money in this country.
00:21:09And if you talk about it, you stand the risk of losing your life.
00:21:13But you've got to be brave.
00:21:16What do you think about the laws that are in place to deal with crime?
00:21:20Because there has been the argument that if there's greater enforcement of the law,
00:21:25well, then we will derive greater benefits.
00:21:28What do you think about the laws that are in place?
00:21:30You could put a thousand laws in the Parliament, but 10 million laws in the Parliament
00:21:36is not going to matter if the laws in this country are not enforced.
00:21:43And that's the point.
00:21:45Laws in this country, we see Trinidad as a lawless country.
00:21:49It's not about being a lawless country.
00:21:51The laws in this country are not enforced.
00:21:53Many times, the police themselves don't have the physical manpower, the human resources,
00:22:01financial resources.
00:22:03Just recently, a good friend of mine got robbed in Barraco.
00:22:08When you went to the police station, they didn't even have masks and tape.
00:22:12You're going to talk about the label items and things that may have been found.
00:22:19We are living in 2024.
00:22:22We don't have a computerized database of any sort where police station A can speak
00:22:29to police station B.
00:22:31We're still writing reports.
00:22:33I mean, really?
00:22:35And then you say we have political will or the will to solve crime in this country.
00:22:40We don't.
00:22:41And as soon as people start getting upset and angsty, the first thing to do is,
00:22:46I will change the Minister of Accessibility.
00:22:49How does that create a solution?
00:22:53To me, it doesn't.
00:22:55But like I said, I wish Mrs. Scotland all the luck in the world.
00:23:01But you know that, and there's always a discussion when there's a spike in crime.
00:23:11And the discussion is, and we did see it over the past few weeks,
00:23:17following the 14 murders on the weekend.
00:23:20And we saw the police, they came out and they said,
00:23:24well, we are going to put things in place and then we are going to be consistent.
00:23:28And there have been calls from members of the public for greater action
00:23:34to be taken against criminals.
00:23:37Because while the police are still staging roadblocks across the country,
00:23:41murders are still happening, home invasions are happening.
00:23:45And the talk has been that there have to be greater repercussions
00:23:52for the criminal out there.
00:23:54But there's also another side of it, that if laws are enforced
00:24:01and the full hand of the law comes down on the criminal,
00:24:06that there are also political repercussions to this also.
00:24:10Of course there is, and I agree with you 100%.
00:24:15Everything is done by design.
00:24:18I believe everything is done by design.
00:24:22Governments have created, and in particular the PNM government,
00:24:28have created what we are reaping today as a society.
00:24:35Why do you suffer people for four years?
00:24:41And then in an election year, you have enough money
00:24:46and then in an election year you have enough money
00:24:49for all the buildings, the infrastructure.
00:24:52So come the people.
00:24:54And when you throw these palms at people, we fight each other
00:24:57to grab whatever they are giving, but then you suffer people again.
00:25:00It's an abusive relationship.
00:25:03If you look at this relationship as a man and a woman,
00:25:06a husband and a wife, it's abusive.
00:25:09And people have devastated almost a culture
00:25:12where people believe that, ah, it's our culture.
00:25:16You starve people, you don't provide food.
00:25:20What do you think?
00:25:21How does that then reflect itself as a society?
00:25:24Not to fight?
00:25:26But it is done by design because you are dependent on people.
00:25:30Now, of course, if you go to address these issues,
00:25:33you are saying that they are going to be sometimes
00:25:36perhaps even electoral repercussions.
00:25:39Well, if you care about crime enough,
00:25:42grab the bull by the horns and deal with it
00:25:45and let the chips fall where they may be.
00:25:48But I will hope that they write to people of Trinidad and Tobago
00:25:53who are not involved at any level of
00:25:57the words that I'm looking for,
00:26:01but that the right people of Trinidad and Tobago
00:26:04will stand up and reject this kind of governance
00:26:07and realize that even those who are being suffered
00:26:12will realize that, listen, this country has enough for all.
00:26:17And if we get rid of the waste, corruption, and mismanagement
00:26:20and this culture of starving people
00:26:24and then throwing grains at them to fight over
00:26:27in the next three years,
00:26:29that we don't have to put up with this as a country,
00:26:32you will see things change in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:26:35But this works.
00:26:37It works for the elections.
00:26:39It works to divide people.
00:26:41And so there will be no change unless there's a change in government.
00:26:44Should the politician be doing more?
00:26:47Of course, over the months, we have heard talks
00:26:50between the government and the opposition.
00:26:53Of course, those talks fell apart.
00:26:56And then in recent months, the opposition said,
00:26:59look, we want to engage in talks.
00:27:02And then the government said, no, we're no longer interested in those talks.
00:27:05Should the politician be doing more
00:27:08as it relates to on both sides of the divide
00:27:11when it comes to crime?
00:27:13Of course, they should. It's their job.
00:27:16One is in government and one is
00:27:19The government's been waiting
00:27:22and both of them are using crime as a political football
00:27:25while people are gunned down in the streets.
00:27:28Because they don't have the same problems
00:27:31that the average person has.
00:27:34They don't have that problem. They have security.
00:27:37I go to this market,
00:27:40when will I see football out in public?
00:27:43When will I see football out in public?

00:27:53They don't.
00:27:56Crime works when people are frustrated and frightened.
00:27:59The first thing you do is go out and cry and talk.
00:28:02Or you say, I want to speak to the government.
00:28:05The government said they wouldn't speak to the opposition.
00:28:08You tell me, two sets of grown people can't pick up the phone and meet and talk.
00:28:11And you don't care.
00:28:14Crime suits this group of politicians.
00:28:17Do you feel sadness?
00:28:20Or do you run and drop crocodile tails at a funeral?

00:28:29It's so disgusting to think about.
00:28:32And you look and see straight through it.
00:28:35People from Manitoba were not stupid.
00:28:38They see through it.
00:28:41And they say, we are in an election.
00:28:44Let's listen to their solutions.
00:28:47Better yet, why don't the people of Trinidad and Tobago
00:28:50And the media call for some kind of public debate

00:30:58than the rest of them because it could be
00:30:59who is more corrupt than the other
00:31:01and food more than the other.
00:31:03And of course, getting rid of waste,
00:31:06corruption and mismanagement in this country.
00:31:09Absolutely, and I think people are ready
00:31:11to talk about issues and listen to solutions.
00:31:15If people are viable, that's all we can do.

00:34:55of the 1990 attempted coup.
00:34:57You would remember that over the course of six days,
00:34:59members of the Jamaat al-Muslimin
00:35:01held hostages at TTT, Radio Trinidad,
00:35:03and the Parliament,
00:35:04including then Prime Minister A.N.R. Robinson.
00:35:07This morning we do have with us
00:35:09a former Senate President
00:35:10and current political leader
00:35:11of the Hope Party,
00:35:12Timothy Hamill-Smith.
00:35:14Now Mr. Hamill-Smith
00:35:16and the political leaders of the NTA
00:35:18and COP plan to attend the wreath-laying ceremony
00:35:21outside the Red House tomorrow.
00:35:24Good morning, sir. Thank you very much.
00:35:24Good morning, good morning.
00:35:26Very good to be here.
00:35:27Good morning to all your viewers.
00:35:28Yeah, let's talk about the significance
00:35:31of that trip tomorrow
00:35:34with you, the NTA, and the COP
00:35:38at the wreath-laying ceremony.
00:35:40I think beyond the question of who are attending,
00:35:44because that's what you identified,
00:35:46we have to recall,
00:35:48this is a country event.
00:35:50If a country fails to recall its history
00:35:54or learn from its history,
00:35:56it's doomed to repeat the events.
00:36:00We look at the memorial on Memorial Day.
00:36:04We memorialize an event that took place
00:36:09on the other side of the world,
00:36:10and we should.
00:36:12Democracy was challenged at that point.
00:36:15And here, in Trinidad and Tobago,
00:36:181990 was a point where terrorists,
00:36:22if you like, invaded our parliament.
00:36:26Our democracy was at stake.
00:36:30And if we fail to recall that,
00:36:32and that's why you have a memorial for.
00:36:35If you fail to recall that,
00:36:38then you are doomed to repeat it.
00:36:40And you heard Prime Minister say
00:36:42a scheme was being hatched in another place
00:36:45in the SSA to have a coup.
00:36:48And today, when you look at it,
00:36:50look at the amount of artillery
00:36:53that we are known to be out there.
00:36:55Now and again, the police bring out
00:36:57all these guns and parade them.
00:37:01They found these guns.
00:37:02I don't know how come they always find these guns,
00:37:04but nobody's attached to them.
00:37:06Nobody's in possession of them.
00:37:09They just happenstance, as it were.
00:37:12And therefore, we need, as a country,
00:37:16and we, the political parties, the NTA, the COP,
00:37:21and Hope have, yes, at this stage,
00:37:24combined to come together to say,
00:37:28yes, it is important we keep this day in our memory.
00:37:33We honor those people who stood for democracy,
00:37:38because there are many who fell.
00:37:41And yet, the country, our politicians
00:37:45on either side of the divide, the two major parties,
00:37:49they were absent from the parliament that day,
00:37:52and I'm not casting aspersions on them,
00:37:56but they are absent basically again tomorrow.
00:38:00That is a sad reflection.
00:38:03And therefore, one says to oneself,
00:38:06something must change,
00:38:08or else we are doomed to repeat it.
00:38:10And of course, we had a commission of inquiry.
00:38:13There was a report in 2014.
00:38:16This is the 10th anniversary.
00:38:18Have they looked?
00:38:19There were recommendations then.
00:38:21I don't know if people are aware.
00:38:22Recommendations that will look
00:38:24at the security architecture of Trinidad and Tobago.
00:38:28Have we done that, or have we just paid lip service?
00:38:33A recommendation that we should honor those who fell,
00:38:37honor those who stood up for the democracy,
00:38:40including many arms.
00:38:42You know, if you go back and look at it,
00:38:44WASA and TNTEC were part of that line.
00:38:46610 was part of it.
00:38:49TTT were part of it.
00:38:51There were ladies and gentlemen who stood up
00:38:56and worked through that.
00:38:58Why do you feel to ignore that?
00:39:00Why do you think, though, this confusion, as it were,
00:39:05over the past 34 years,
00:39:09to, I don't want to say commemorate,
00:39:14but maybe commemorate may be the correct word, observe.
00:39:19There has been a hesitation by the politician.
00:39:23Because as you know, Mr. Hamill-Smith,
00:39:27you have this eternal flame outside of the parliament.
00:39:30It has been moved to the, let's say,
00:39:32that would be the northern side now of the Red House.
00:39:38But over the years, we have seen sometimes
00:39:41the politicians would be there,
00:39:43sometimes they would not be there.
00:39:45Sometimes you would see activists there.
00:39:47And you spoke about honor.
00:39:50Have we, you think, honored the victims of this
00:39:55in the way that they should be honored?
00:39:57Because there was an argument, or there is an argument,
00:40:01that there may be a hesitation by the politician to do this
00:40:05because it may also give the impression
00:40:09that they are honoring the insurgents.
00:40:13I find that difficult.
00:40:15I mean, that is tantamount to saying we celebrate,
00:40:19we memorialize Memorial Day.
00:40:24And what we're honoring is the attack
00:40:28on democracy by Adolf Hitler.
00:40:32You know, if you put that interpretation on it,
00:40:35that's what you would be saying about Memorial Day.
00:40:38But it is really very strange
00:40:42that the two major parties,
00:40:44of course, the party in power at the time
00:40:46were neither of the major parties that are there today,
00:40:49but in fact, are reflective of some of our group, as it were.
00:40:54And yet, they fail, they refuse almost to make this day.
00:41:00What had been recommended is that Memorial
00:41:03should not just be the flame,
00:41:04but the names of those who fell,
00:41:08that they should, you know, the report says there were 25,
00:41:11but they probably were more like 34, 35.
00:41:16There were people who stood up in that parliament.
00:41:20And, you know, nobody will forget, hopefully,
00:41:23you know, attack with full force when a gun is at your head.
00:41:27How many people have that, you know, stamina, that energy,
00:41:32that willingness to stand up for country?
00:41:35You hear about Dr. Emmanuel Hossein.
00:41:38He was attempting, people don't recognize,
00:41:41that the injured included the terrorists
00:41:44inside the parliament and the hostages.
00:41:48So both the hostages and those who took over the parliament
00:41:51had received injuries.
00:41:53Injuries, if left untended too,
00:41:56could have led to their death.
00:41:58And what did Dr. Hossein do?
00:42:00You see, he was a minister of health at the time.
00:42:04He went around tending to their wounds.
00:42:07He recommended, whether you're a Muslim,
00:42:10or whether you were one of the parliamentarians,
00:42:14we must tend to this.
00:42:15He's the one who recommended,
00:42:17look, if you don't take Mr. Robinson out of the parliament,
00:42:22then he may die on your hands.
00:42:25And to their credit, the Muslims allowed that to happen.
00:42:30And there were others in the same case, you know.
00:42:33If these things are untended too, gangrene can set in.
00:42:37And he should be a man honored.
00:42:39That's what the report, this is an independent report.
00:42:43I don't know anybody suggesting
00:42:45that they had a political agenda.
00:42:47Nobody said that.
00:42:49But I go back.
00:42:50If you fail to recall the history
00:42:53and the lessons from the past,
00:42:55you will keep repeating it.
00:42:57That's not just an aphorism that is empty.
00:43:01It's full of promise.
00:43:03We must stand up as a people,
00:43:06and the politicians must lead it.
00:43:07And there we are today.
00:43:08You speak about lessons.
00:43:10What have we learned?
00:43:11Have we learned anything?
00:43:12It seems not.
00:43:13That's just why we are doomed to repeat the past.
00:43:16And here, you have the prime minister saying that,
00:43:20I don't know if you recognize
00:43:23that here we were failing to recognize 1990.
00:43:28That the same thing, according to him,
00:43:31was being hatched elsewhere.
00:43:33Today, I think that we are in a far worse position,
00:43:37given the amount of artillery is out there.
00:43:39It's been said it's artillery to fight a state,
00:43:43which is what happened in 1990.
00:43:44But the guns back then would be a laughing stock
00:43:48compared to what the gangs have today within their armory,
00:43:54if they decided to take up arms against the state.
00:43:58Are we going to wait for that moment?
00:44:00We see it happening, murders every day,
00:44:03multiple murders now.
00:44:05And we sit back and wouldn't that,
00:44:09should not that spur our politicians who stand up for us,
00:44:13who stand up for country, who represent it,
00:44:16to say, we must be there.
00:44:19We must be there on the 27th of July to recognize this event,
00:44:23to give honor and praise to those who stood up for democracy.
00:44:27On two occasions during our discussion,
00:44:30you touched on that situation at the SSA.
00:44:33As you look at that situation at the SSA,
00:44:37you look at recent statements of the prime minister,
00:44:40you look at recent statements
00:44:43by the political leader of the NTA,
00:44:46and then you look at the response
00:44:47of the national security minister.
00:44:49Yesterday, the prime minister also spoke about the SSA.
00:44:54What's your view?
00:44:55What's your perspective on that?
00:44:58And that's part of the report.
00:45:01You need to review the security architecture.
00:45:07They identified the SSA as being one of those.
00:45:10You need, because it is always a case that these units,
00:45:14which are empowered to a great extent to protect us,
00:45:18could turn against us.
00:45:20And, you know, we seem to have allowed things
00:45:23to take their own course.
00:45:25The police service itself,
00:45:27which is there to protect and serve,
00:45:31what we find is that the detection rate is abysmally poor.
00:45:36And we've become a nation known
00:45:39for its murderous nature, as it were.
00:45:42And there is a fear.
00:45:45I think we don't recognize the amount of,
00:45:48we walk around in fear.
00:45:53We perhaps don't have it apparent to us all the time,
00:45:55but, you know, you look over your shoulder.
00:45:58If it was nighttime,
00:45:59you certainly would be a little more alert
00:46:02to the fact that this could happen,
00:46:04and it should not be so.
00:46:06So that, yes, one needs to constantly look
00:46:10into these bodies, which form part of our,
00:46:14so whether it's the army,
00:46:16are there things that we could do different?
00:46:19Should they still be barricaded in Tetra,
00:46:22or should there be elsewhere?
00:46:23That's one of the recommendations.
00:46:25You know, how do you ensure,
00:46:27of course, we recall too, back in 70s,
00:46:30the army raised, so this is not impossible.
00:46:33And so democracy requires we be eternally vigilant.
00:46:40And we demonstrate that by being there tomorrow
00:46:43to honor those who stood up for democracy,
00:46:46to remind ourselves that unless we are vigilant,
00:46:51these things can reoccur.
00:46:54If you'd allow me, Mr. Hamill-Smith,
00:46:56to touch on one of the big stories
00:46:58over the past few hours,
00:47:00and of course it deals with the prime minister's appointment
00:47:04of the Port of Spain South MP, Keith Scotland,
00:47:06as a minister in the Ministry of National Security.
00:47:08And this is what the prime minister said.
00:47:10There are five areas that I expect
00:47:12that Minister Scotland would focus on,
00:47:14not the least of which is the police,
00:47:17and of course, offender management,
00:47:19management of illegal immigrants,
00:47:21drug trafficking, and money laundering,
00:47:22along with drug enforcement,
00:47:24some of the responsibilities of the minister
00:47:28who is going to take his oath of office later on today.
00:47:32What sort of impact do you think
00:47:34that this is going to have at all?
00:47:36So drugs and guns are at the heart
00:47:39of what the prime minister's talked about.
00:47:41So what should be done about drugs and guns?
00:47:45Well, number one, we should have scanners on the port,
00:47:48but not only scanners.
00:47:50You see, and Minister of Finance recognizes that,
00:47:54that the truth is that there are elements
00:47:57within our population,
00:47:59when you bring the example of scanners,
00:48:02but it's also technology in other forms.
00:48:05They are sabotaged from within.
00:48:07That's the truth of the matter.
00:48:09So if you are gonna have scanners,
00:48:11the truth is you should be leasing those scanners
00:48:14accompanied by maintenance, operation, repair,
00:48:20and then we'll see a difference.
00:48:22We are just playing around
00:48:24by spending millions of dollars on new equipment
00:48:27that we know will be sabotaged
00:48:31or no use made of it.
00:48:34Why, how come we haven't a greater,
00:48:37we are part of CARICOM Impacts.
00:48:41If you follow what they've done,
00:48:42they have managed both to get guns, drugs,
00:48:47and people prosecuted along with it.
00:48:51But Trinidad and Tobago, for some reason,
00:48:54has never been part of that.
00:48:56We need that assistance
00:48:58because what Impacts does
00:49:00is works along with Interpol
00:49:02and your international allies.
00:49:04Because we're a small country,
00:49:06we don't have the resources
00:49:09to go after on the territorial seas of Trinidad and Tobago.
00:49:13But does disappointment make sense to you?
00:49:16Well, it's, you know,
00:49:19bows gently towards the call from the people to see
00:49:24that the Minister of National Security
00:49:26is feeling abysmally.
00:49:28I'm not sure,
00:49:30and I don't have anything against Mr. Scotland.
00:49:34He made some foolish statements,
00:49:35I'm sure he regrets making.
00:49:37You know, he's a bright, intelligent young man.
00:49:41But I don't think anybody in this country
00:49:45has any confidence that anything will change.
00:49:49If it were to change, if we want to change,
00:49:52there are the dramatic steps you would take
00:49:55of allowing, in terms of guns and drugs,
00:49:58we need to stop them coming into Trinidad and Tobago.
00:50:02It just didn't, we don't make them here.
00:50:05They've come in through our ports.
00:50:08And the only way, therefore,
00:50:09is to secure your territorial waters from this entering.
00:50:14And the only thing I see happening here
00:50:18that can work is through Impacts,
00:50:22through the whole Caribbean getting together,
00:50:25but together with Interpol, together with our allies,
00:50:30having shiprider agreements.
00:50:33I don't know if you recall,
00:50:35Mr. Pandey had called for shiprider agreements in his time.
00:50:40And there were many who said,
00:50:42oh, we'll lose our sovereignty.
00:50:45And Mr. Pandey responded by saying,
00:50:47well, we could lose our sovereignty
00:50:51those who import guns,
00:50:54or we could get help from another nation.
00:50:57Yeah, Mr. Amesmith, I just have about a minute again,
00:51:00and I want to refer to a statement signed by you,
00:51:06Mr. Griffith and Mr. Sinnott.
00:51:08And some people are seeing this document
00:51:13as the beginning of things to come.
00:51:17An alliance, as it were,
00:51:19between these three political parties.
00:51:23And I think that that's a correct interpretation
00:51:26of things to come.
00:51:27We are working hard to make sure that we get it right.
00:51:33We're not just jumping in a band together
00:51:36and say, let's do it.
00:51:37And we've been started working
00:51:38over the last three weeks,
00:51:41and we have a program working towards
00:51:45what we like to see as our ultimate end.
00:51:49I don't know what shape or form that might take.
00:51:52You might ask me, you know,
00:51:53will there be three parties?
00:51:55Will there be one party?
00:51:58Will there just be an alliance?
00:52:00I don't seek to predict that,
00:52:02because it takes hard work.
00:52:04We have to have a common vision for the country.
00:52:07We have to have policies that we feel all,
00:52:10we can stand behind and implement
00:52:13to make the changes that we in Trinidad and Tobago want.
00:52:17So yes, I believe it will be a dynamic force,
00:52:21a force to be reckoned with in the next election.
00:52:25And we'll perhaps shock some of the other parties
00:52:31who just stood by and done nothing.
00:52:35Who stood by, not willing to attend a memorial
00:52:39where they ought to recognize
00:52:42that if we allow this to happen,
00:52:45what we're doing is in fact, by extension,
00:52:52supporting the Muslims, supporting acts of insurrection,
00:52:57supporting terrorists, by saying nothing,
00:53:00by doing nothing.
00:53:02Yes.
00:53:03Instead of memorializing those who stood up for democracy,
00:53:06put down their life for democracy.
00:53:09Our army came out there,
00:53:11and if we didn't have our army,
00:53:13Trinidad and Tobago would be a different place today.
00:53:16Yeah.
00:53:17Mr. Ammelsmith, we have run out of time,

01:19:40And we selected that theme as it's two-pronged in the sense that we are moving forward with
01:19:45our heads up.
01:19:46Yes, we want to continue that understanding of ourselves that today, it is, we have much
01:19:54to be proud about as Africans.
01:19:57We are strong, we are powerful people, we are very resilient people.
01:20:03But even as we move forward with that pride in our culture and our dignity, we also want
01:20:12to be paying attention to what's happening around us.
01:20:15So the heads up is not just about that pride and confidence, but also about paying attention,
01:20:23because the colonization and reparation struggle is still very much part of this process of
01:20:31emancipation and therefore we have to remain vigilant.
01:20:35Yeah.
01:20:36Now, I don't want you to say too much, but I'm still going to ask you, because we as
01:20:42members of the public, we have known about, you have this march that begins every year
01:20:48from downtown Port of Spain and goes to the Queen's Park Savannah, and we know that sometimes
01:20:54you have some big surprises, you have some dignitaries coming in from other countries
01:21:00and so on.
01:21:01So you have any surprises this year?
01:21:02Yes, well this year the Prime Minister has invited Professor Hilary Beckles, the Chair
01:21:08of the Caribbean Reparations Commission, to be the special guest for Emancipation Day
01:21:13this year.
01:21:14Yes.
01:21:15And Madam Chair, you have a lot of, you're celebrating this in a big way again for this
01:21:22year.
01:21:23Yes, indeed.
01:21:24So I'm seeing that, and we did speak about this in the past, but it is good to remind
01:21:29people that there is also going to be a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Symposium hosted by the
01:21:37Emancipation Support Committee in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and the TTMA.
01:21:42That's right.
01:21:43And so every year as part of the festival we have the Trade and Investment Symposium.
01:21:49This festival is really multifaceted, I know too most people, what they know and perhaps
01:21:55remember is just the Cambrian Street Procession and Emancipation Day, but the festival starts
01:22:01in May and we lead up to this moment of the opening of the village and these major activities.
01:22:08So the Trade and Investment Symposium we'll be celebrating its 22nd year this year, and
01:22:14it is that space where we talk about trade between the African continent and its diaspora,
01:22:24its Caribbean diaspora in particular.
01:22:27And what we try to do, we call it reinventing the triangle, because the trade between Africa
01:22:34and the Caribbean was used primarily by European powers for the purpose of enslavement, and
01:22:43therefore we want now to reconfigure, re-conceptualize that trade to be one that brings mutual benefit
01:22:54to Africans and Africans in the diaspora.
01:22:57So we first want to facilitate trade, and by doing this I think we have been able to
01:23:04influence even our government in appreciating the value of that kind of collaboration.
01:23:12Because in earlier days, years, many people would figure trade with Africa, question mark,
01:23:19but by introducing relevant persons and bringing them here and having conversations, I think
01:23:25that door was opened, and for example last year, which was a really big year, when we
01:23:30had the Asantehene come, what followed after is that there was a major trade exhibition
01:23:38from Trinidad and Tobago, led by the Ministry of Trade and the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers
01:23:46Association, to Ghana, you know?
01:23:48Yes, that happened, yes.
01:23:50That's right, you know.
01:23:51So the symposium brings the correct bodies and minds together so that we can continue
01:23:58to have these discussions.
01:23:59This year we are kind of focusing on how do we look at some of the issues perhaps that
01:24:10continue to inhibit trade, you know, that lack of direct air travel, you know, some
01:24:16of the, we need to look at how the financial systems, you know, because all of these things
01:24:22remain colonized, and therefore they take control and inhibit how we can freely conduct
01:24:30business between the continents.
01:24:32So we are looking at some of those issues and how we can advocate mainly for direct
01:24:38air travel between the Caribbean and Africa, and how we, you know, the shipping, how we
01:24:48can make that easier, you know, the whole issue of finance and the management of those
01:24:54systems that can make those things easier.
01:24:56And also looking at, you know, this outside of oil and energy, the energy products, culture,
01:25:03you know, how can we trade our cultural products, you know, how can we trade about the products
01:25:08that are being manufactured here in Trinidad and Tobago.
01:25:10Yeah.
01:25:11All right.
01:25:12So the village opens tomorrow.
01:25:13That's right.
01:25:14At the Queen's Park Savannah at 10 o'clock.
01:25:17Yes.

01:25:19What does the program look like for tomorrow and the days to come?
01:25:24Yes.
01:25:25We have a tremendous lineup of activities.
01:25:28You know, the village becomes this space where we have tremendous economic activity going
01:25:34on because we have over 200 entrepreneurs at the village this year.
01:25:41And then we also have a tremendous amount of entertainment.
01:25:45We have from the drumming, dancing, rap, so calypso, pan, every expression of African
01:25:51culture.
01:25:52And then we also have what is an educational space as well because we have our large books
01:25:59and obelisks that carry a lot of information.
01:26:03Tomorrow morning, tomorrow morning at 10 to 2 a.m., we have our grand opening.
01:26:10We are thankful to the Honorable Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, who is going
01:26:17to open the village, you know.
01:26:19Our Prime Minister has also indicated he's going to visit, so we look forward to that.
01:26:24And then we have the Rhythm and Voices of Africa.
01:26:28Every day in the village, you know, from 3 p.m. we have our drumming, dancing, chanterelles.
01:26:33But on each night, we have a special show.
01:26:36So on Saturday night, we are going to have the Unity Reggae Concert.
01:26:40And the highlight of that is that we're paying tribute to Queen Omega with our Spirit of
01:26:45Emancipation Award.
01:26:46On the Sunday, it's pan, youth pan, steel orchestras in the afternoon, jazz at sunset
01:26:53with Brenda Butler.
01:26:54And then we have our pan, you know, bigger steel orchestras in the night.
01:26:59On Monday, we have what we call Ancestral Night, and we are focusing on those real traditional
01:27:04expressions, you know, like limbo and bongo and stick fighting and so on.
01:27:11And then on Tuesday, I mean Monday, Tuesday, Tuesday we are playing a special tribute to
01:27:17Luther this year.
01:27:18You know, every year we do a shikamu, which is a praise to an elder.
01:27:21And this year, we have chosen Luther.
01:27:23And on Friday, Wednesday, we have our Pan-African Night, our focus this year is on Pan-African
01:27:30dance.
01:27:31And when we, on Monday, we have the, no, right, ma'am, on Thursday, you'll figure this is
01:27:39a tired day here.
01:27:40This is a busy week.

01:27:42So Thursday is Emancipation Day.
01:27:43Right.
01:27:44And we start the morning with the early morning procession at the All-Stars Panyard.
01:27:50And then we have, we go down to, we take, do our early morning procession down to the
01:27:54Treasury Building where the Freedom Morning is presented.
01:27:58Then we have our major campaign up to the Savannah, and we spend the day there with
01:28:03our cultural performances.
01:28:06And we would have our guest, Professor Henry Beckers.
01:28:10I think he will join us both on the promenade and at the Savannah to speak with us.
01:28:14And our Prime Minister has also been invited to speak with us.
01:28:18And then Monday, we have Lanyup.

01:29:54So was the minister and members of the diplomatic corps assisting us in lighting the flamboos,

01:30:04So the event is really intended to pay tribute to our ancestors because, you know, the celebration
01:30:09of emancipation is really about a major part of it is remembering our ancestors and their
01:30:16sacrifices and their struggles and that has led us to be able to be here today.
01:30:25And this is not just a win for African people, you know, it's a win for humanity, you know,
01:30:32that they struggle to end this form of, you know, oppression of one group on another.
01:30:40You know what I'm saying?
01:30:41That is a benefit for all mankind.
01:30:42So therefore, it's a day for all of us to celebrate.
01:30:45In all of the celebrations here, is there anything special that you all have planned
01:30:49for the young people?
01:30:51Well, I suspect the regular night.
01:30:52Oh, yes, yes.
01:30:53On Mondays, you see, I don't know what else I got.
01:30:54So Monday is Youth Day.
01:30:55Oh, OK.
01:30:56Yes.
01:30:57And on Youth Day, children come, children who are in Tams, parents bring their children
01:31:03and they participate in a number of workshops.
01:31:04We do stilt walking, they learn to play the drum, they learn to dance, they learn sculpting,
01:31:10they learn to do theater arts.
01:31:12So they have a number of camps and they go from camp to camp, from workshop to workshop
01:31:16and they learn to do these different things and we also try to put in some other entertainment
01:31:21areas.
01:31:22We are thinking of a, I'm going to say a haunted house, but not a haunted house, it's a space
01:31:26with our folklore characters, you know, Leanna Boyce, our sister, but she has this, you know,
01:31:33she has designed this folklore house, you know, so that when they go in there, you know,
01:31:36they may see all of our different folk characters jumping out.
01:31:39So you're hoping to have that set up, to have, you know, workshops, even with stick fighting,
01:31:44let your children understand because, you know, stick fighting is a very intense discipline,
01:31:50you know, and it's our own kind of form of martial arts and it is something that, you
01:31:56know, we want children to understand what it takes and, you know, without hurting themselves,
01:32:03you know, it's just like when you do martial arts, you are learning how to manage your
01:32:07body, how to manage your mind, you know, in dealing with combat.
01:32:12But there's a ritual to it too.
01:32:13Oh, there's a ritual indefinitely, definitely.
01:32:16And so these are the kinds of things that we have to expose our children to, to help
01:32:21in the healing, you know, and to address some of the challenges that our young people
01:32:26are facing.
01:32:27You know, we have to ground them, as you're saying, in rituals, but meet things that are
01:32:31meaningful and help in their own personal development.
01:32:35Yes.
01:32:36Madam Chair, anything else you'd like to tell us before you leave us this morning?
01:32:39Yes.
01:32:40I just want to encourage all of our citizens.
01:32:44We come in, you know, we come in because judging from what you have told us here this morning.
01:32:48I just want to encourage all of our citizens to come to the village.
01:32:51Let us share in this special moment and in the celebration of this special moment for
01:32:56all of humanity.
01:32:58It is extremely important that we understand that liberation of Africans, the emancipation
01:33:05of Africans was not just a win for Africans, and you know we didn't win yet because the
01:33:11process continues, you know.
01:33:14So please come out and come to the village and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere.
01:33:19Even as our society goes through a lot of painful experiences, now we have to have balance,
01:33:25you know.
01:33:26So here we have, and we're offering you, in the midst of all this, a space where you can
01:33:30come and find that peace, where you can find that positive energy, you can be entertained,
01:33:35we can ensure that you have a smile on your face and a joy in your heart.
01:33:39So come to the Lejiasu Umuwale Village and help us continue to celebrate emancipation.

01:38:07Tell us about, well, if you're raising funds for the school.
01:38:13Let's talk about the school.
01:38:15Why do you need these funds for?
01:38:17All right.
01:38:18Thank you so much for having us.
01:38:19Good morning to the viewing population.
01:38:22St. James Secondary School is a school established in 1962.
01:38:28We have served the community of St. James and environs.
01:38:32Our catchment area stretches wide and far, all of Port of Spain and other communities.
01:38:37We have our students in taken from there.
01:38:41As you can well imagine, 1962 is quite a few years ago.
01:38:46So infrastructurally, we are challenged with the day-to-day running of the school.
01:38:52Resources are minimal.
01:38:54And we are constantly trying to upgrade and fix the school as we focus on safety and security of our children.
01:39:04More importantly, though, we see the need for our youth to have more programs, self-development programs.
01:39:11So it takes a lot of money and resources to invest in them.
01:39:15And where the home is lacking, we, the school, must be the ones to fill that gap.
01:39:20So you find that having personnel come in, having them exposed to different seminars and so on, is quite a challenge financially.
01:39:31And the school is just incapable of funding all of the needs of our children all the time.
01:39:38So we depend on stakeholders.
01:39:40The community must adopt the school.
01:39:42And local school board is one of our major stakeholders.
01:39:45Yeah.
01:39:47Mr. Howard, tell us about this event that you are having to raise funds for the school.
01:39:52Okay. Good morning again to everyone out in the viewing public.
01:39:56So we had to come up with an idea as the local school board to give our part.
01:40:03What the local school board is, we incorporate all the different stakeholders of the school and make it into one institution.
01:40:14So we are community, alumni, parent-teachers, teachers, students, and the general public as well, as I said, the community before.
01:40:27So we try to come together to do an event which will not only just be St. James Secondary people alone,
01:40:35but to use the wider community, not just St. James, but the whole of Trinidad and Tobago, we hope will come out to this event,
01:40:41to do an event that everyone can enjoy, come out and free up a little bit with all that is going on,
01:40:48and still at the same time raise some funds for the school so that we can go and be able to finance some of the projects that we have set out.
01:40:58What can patrons expect?
01:41:01Well, we have put together a plan with DJs of different eras.
01:41:10So we have Ishmael the Demolition Man, we have John Boy, we have the young DJ Starstruck,
01:41:19so all the DJs, and then we have a house DJ Pandemonium Songs also that will take us through the entire night.
01:41:25You never know what surprises could pop up on the night because we at St. James Secondary have a large, large, large group of alum who are major artists in the country.
01:41:36So you never know if somebody is around and they decide to pass through.
01:41:40Yes, so we have that. We will have food stalled there with what we are told is bacon, shark, wings, fries, fish, corn soup, the full works for an event.
01:41:54We have a fully stocked bar for those who are not walking with their cooler because it's a cooler event, that they can come and purchase their drinks on spot.
01:42:03Is this the first time that you are having such an event?
01:42:07As the board, it may be, from what I can remember, I am just on the board two years, but from being also alum of the school,
01:42:16from the board it might be the second event that the board has hosted, but other stakeholders have hosted events before.
01:42:24Madam Principal, what's your school population like?
01:42:29We are approximately 600 students, 50 teachers, and about 20 civil staff.
01:42:36One of the challenges we have is indiscipline, and I mean it's not unique to St. James Secondary School.
01:42:44So one of the major projects I would have put forward, proposed to the local school board,
01:42:49is the installation of a camera system to assist us in monitoring our students in checking on their behaviors while in class and recreational time.
01:43:01So this is one of the major concerns for me in terms of having those security cameras up so that it can help with indiscipline and investigation
01:43:12because we know that our schools are plagued with a lot of indiscipline.
01:43:18So this is one of the things that I would have proposed to the board. It is phase one of three.
01:43:24We need 48 cameras, and right now we are just at 16 cameras.
01:43:30Yeah, so if it is that people are looking at us right now who want to contribute to the school, how can they do that?
01:43:39Oh, that's quite simple. We have our social media handles. We are on Instagram. We are on Facebook.
01:43:46But we do have our school landline number as well as our cell number, and we can be contacted by any of our stakeholders and we can put arrangements in place.
01:43:58We have two bank accounts as well, one at Republic, one at Royal Bank, so I can finish that information for you all to post after.
01:44:05All right, so you spoke about cameras. What are some of the other things that you need at the school?
01:44:12We need conducive classroom settings, so we are plagued with the heat.
01:44:20Only some of our specialist rooms are AC'd, so we have a heat problem, non-conducive conditions.
01:44:29We also have electrical issues. We have ceiling issues. We have plumbing challenges.
01:44:38We don't have a hall, so many times gathering as a population, we do it in our courtyard, but if the weather doesn't permit, we cannot facilitate a bigger gathering.
01:44:50So morning assembly is quite challenging and so on.
01:44:53So the needs go wide and far, but more importantly, I want to stress the importance of the investment in our children, in our young people, the projects.
01:45:05We would have ventured into things like Boys to Men program, so we had our boys come in during the vacation, and this was a local school board initiative as well.
01:45:15Some of our boys were quite unique and a bit, I wouldn't say challenging, but needed a little additional attention.
01:45:23So we would have had them in during the summer, which of course is at a cost, and the school funded that along with the local school board having resource personnel come in and treat them for the day.
01:45:35They also went on outings and so on. We also would have looked at nurturing our young ladies because it is a co-ed school.
01:45:44We also looked at a world of work where our form fives had an entire session of interviewing just before they went into their CSEC exam period.
01:45:53All of these things cost, so it is a challenge, and I must say the school cannot do it alone, and the Ministry of Education, with all of their good intentions, we cannot do it alone.
01:46:08The local school board is actually an initiative of the Ministry of Education to get the community involved to adopt the school so that we can have a health-promoting school.
01:46:20Mrs. Chase-Jackman, I want to congratulate you this morning because it's not very often that we can hear from a principal putting the issues and explaining the issues of their school so bare and on the table this morning.
01:46:36So congratulations for that, right?
01:46:38But I think it is all in an attempt to try to find out some of the challenges at the school and why this fundraiser is so important.
01:46:47So Mr. Howard, where can people get tickets for this event?
01:46:51Okay, so you can go out to Crossbees in St. James, B&M Ice Cream in St. James, which is right across the road from the school.
01:47:01Studio, can we put up the flyer to assist Mr. Howard?
01:47:04The school's office, which is open Monday to Friday, you can go in and get tickets there.
01:47:12We also have Hollywood Barber Salon on Ryerson Road.
01:47:17We have the Bocas on Independence Square.
01:47:19And we have the Chinese Chopper Grill in Kirrup Junction.
01:47:22So we kind of try to spread it out as far as we can.
01:47:26And then we have the committee members who have tickets where you can call us and we can make arrangements with you to get tickets whenever you need it, as much as you need.
01:47:37We also have a few specials that if you buy five tickets, instead of paying $1,500, you will pay $1,400.
01:47:45And if you buy 10 tickets in one batch, instead of paying $3,000, you will pay $2,700.
01:47:50So we have put specials out there to make it a little easier for people.
01:47:53You're moving with your crew. It's a cooler event.
01:47:56Come with what you like to drink and come and have a good time with us.
01:48:02And the event, it's on August 3rd.

01:48:30I would just like to endorse the event, and I want to put out to Trinidad and Tobago, the population, that we need to take responsibility for our young people.
01:48:40We have so many ills, and we complain about so many negatives about them.
01:48:45But when you have a resource, we have a resource bank.
01:48:49A school is the incubator to send out our citizenry.
01:48:54So I would beseech the public to come support us to make sure that our school is a beautiful environment where our children can be safe, secured, and most importantly, happy to be there.
01:49:08All right, so illuminate the cooler party, glow in white or bright, August 3rd, 2024.
01:49:14When does, what's the starting time of the event?
01:49:17The party starts at 6 p.m., and we go until 1 a.m. next morning.
01:49:23So we have enough, we have seven hours to enjoy ourselves.
01:49:29One thing that I wanted to mention is when Ms. mentioned earlier that it's a community thing and that we have to all come together to deal with the school.
01:49:39Something was put forward this year by the government for a private-public partnership for schools where there was a tax incentive put in place for businessmen.
01:49:51That whatever you give to the school, there's 150% tax relief that you can retain when you're doing your taxes at the end of the year.
01:49:59So feel free to give the money. You have up to $150,000 that you can get back in tax.
01:50:05Give it to the school, and you will be able to claim for it in your taxes.
01:50:09So don't feel that you're just giving it because you want to give it.
01:50:12There's an incentive out there for you to give to schools, give to any school.
01:50:15But start off with giving to Sydenham Sec.
01:50:17This week, we need to raise all the funds and make it a success.
01:50:21And might I add, it's a win-win. Thank you very much, Mr. Howard. It's a win-win.

01:53:21So I was just thinking about what the two representatives of the school, the St. James Secondary School, they were speaking about a short while ago.
01:53:29That's a lot of problems, you know, at that institution.
01:53:32And I'm sure that other institutions are saddled with the same problems.
01:53:35But you know what?
01:53:36We have to give credit to the educators.
01:53:40We need to give credit to a lot of the people in the communities everywhere in Trinidad and Tobago that are trying to change things.
01:53:49And understand that they have a responsibility to shape the young people in our society so that we can get the right upstanding citizen that we want.
01:54:01Because it's really our future that we're speaking about.
01:54:05So if you have the opportunity and you can contribute to this school and other schools such as this, then please do.
