00:00:00And a very special good morning Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of the world.
00:00:13I'm Marlon Hopkinson.
00:00:14As always, welcome to the Morning Edition.
00:00:16It's Tuesday, July 30th, and thank you very much for joining us this morning.
00:00:21We do appreciate it.
00:00:22We hope that you had a very good night and that you're safe and that you're sound with
00:00:26us this morning.
00:00:27We have a very interesting program, a packed program for you today, so that's why you're
00:00:32seeing me sitting down this morning, right?
00:00:35But before we do that, let's take a look at as to what is happening on the Daily Express.
00:00:41Licensing officers warn motorists of six-week deadline crackdown on car tints.
00:00:46So tint crackdown, motorists have six weeks to comply.
00:00:51Motorists have six weeks to ensure their vehicle tints are within the specified limits of face
00:00:56being penalized.
00:00:58So this was disclosed yesterday during a rollout of the country's vehicle tint laws held at
00:01:03the Ministry of National Security.
00:01:06And the picture on the front page there, Maduro must go.
00:01:11Nationwide protest, protesters march against the official election results declaring President
00:01:16Nicolás Maduro the winner in Caracas, Venezuela yesterday.
00:01:19The sign reads in Spanish, until the end, no dictator.
00:01:24In set, Maduro addresses supporters gathered outside the Miraflores Presidential Palace.
00:01:30All right, so we're moving on now to some sport.
00:01:34So eyes on Los Angeles, swimmer Ferguson determined for more after 27th placing in Paris.
00:01:42It's so much better than I could have imagined.
00:01:45Paris 2024 is proving to be a mind-blowing experience for Zuri Ferguson.
00:01:50Just to see all these elite athletes competing is the best feeling a 17-year-old declared.
00:01:57All right, so that's some of the stories in the newspaper today.
00:02:02As I said, we do have a lot for you on the program.
00:02:07And we are going to be speaking about this tint crackdown.
00:02:10That's the big story today.
00:02:12Of course, it was announced at a news conference yesterday.
00:02:15Studio, are we ready to go?
00:02:17All right.
00:02:18So motorists are warned that the windscreen and window tint regulations will be enforced in six weeks time.
00:02:25The regulations are aimed at improving road safety and fighting crime.
00:02:29On the line this morning, we do have Transport Commissioner Clive Clark.
00:02:32Mr. Clark, good morning.
00:02:34Good morning, Marlon.
00:02:36Good morning and good morning to your listening audience.
00:02:39Yes, Mr. Clark, it's a pleasure to have you here this morning because I know that up to late last night,
00:02:45you and your officers, you were involved in another operation or staged another operation.
00:02:51How did that go?
00:02:53Well, Marlon, again, that was a successful operation.
00:02:57As you know, we are in Tobago carrying out a number of enforcement with TTPS.
00:03:02We were invited by TTPS to come and work along with them as Transport Commissioner.
00:03:07I do have some serious concerns with the fact that our records are showing a number of duplicated vehicles in Tobago,
00:03:14a number of vehicles visiting the inspection stations with tampered chassis.
00:03:19And when there's an increase in that, we know that that's a breeding ground for stolen vehicles.
00:03:25So therefore, we took the time to come up with TTPS and the forensic division.
00:03:31Mr. Commissioner, how long has that been going on?
00:03:33Because it would seem that what you're telling us this morning, it is coming as a surprise to many, this situation in Tobago.
00:03:43Well, let me say, Marlon, when we talk about situation, I'm looking at situation in context of the motor vehicle and road traffic that reaches there.
00:03:51One of the things, though, is that the new inspection system seems to be giving us a revelation of certain things in life that happened in the past as Transport Commissioner, I have serious concerns.
00:04:04It's revealing malpractices by staff, by members of the public, vehicles are showing up as duplicates, vehicles are showing up as being registered twice, vehicles are showing up as, as you said, never being registered.
00:04:22Relevant to licensing office, I must say we have a footprint in licensing office and that we have, we now have enforcement officers stationed in Tobago, two of them.
00:04:32In addition to that, we have, we have officers who visit the island approximately every three to four weeks to conduct enforcement.
00:04:40But again, at times we have to come in and conduct major operations with TTPS to be able to put certain things into perspective.
00:04:50Mr. Clark, I don't know if you know, but right now there is a controversy brewing in Tobago and it deals with licensing officers.
00:04:59And the situation is that apparently licensing officers would have stopped an ambulance with the siren blaring.
00:05:07So it gave the impression that they were going or attending to an emergency.
00:05:14So there is a controversy now as to why licensing officers would have stopped the ambulance.
00:05:20Yes, Martin, I got information on that matter approximately about 10, 15 last night.
00:05:25Someone sent me a video and you know, we have to pay attention as to what is, what is on the internet.
00:05:30And that video, I think, I think it is a spillover from an internet posting by someone.
00:05:35And let me say this, Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, I think it's Section 110, Regulations 110A, identify the fact of, identify what you refer to as an emergency vehicle,
00:05:47whether it be a police service vehicle, a fire service, or any vehicle authorized by a licensing authority to also identify the ambulance relevant to performing their duties.
00:05:58Every, every transport officer, by that I mean every licensing officer knows that an ambulance is classified as an emergency vehicle.
00:06:07And therefore, we do not stop ambulances during operation and specifically, more specifically, if that ambulance do have the siren and the lights on.
00:06:20And let me just say, my information regarding this incident is that this ambulance had its siren and lights on.
00:06:28And apparently, the information I received again is that a WPC, not a licensing officer, observed the ambulance on the line of traffic and went to the operator and inquired and confirmed there was an emergency.
00:06:45And allow the ambulance to come out of the line and proceed through the traffic or proceed through the roadblock at no time did any licensing officer interface or interact with that or prohibit that ambulance in any way from carrying on its duty.
00:07:05And again, I want to repeat that no time did any licensing officer have any interaction with that ambulance.
00:07:11So again, when I see these things on the internet, I take it with a pinch of salt.
00:07:15But Mr. Commissioner, how do you respond to continuous criticisms about these exercises being initiated by the licensing division?
00:07:25Because again, according to some motorists, they believe it is an inconvenience.
00:07:31Of course, at the news conference yesterday, it was said by a number of speakers that this tint crackdown that it is being described as, it is not only to deal with the crime situation, but it's also an attempt to contribute to road safety.
00:07:52Well, I think my specific question is how do we treat criticism?
00:07:56Let me say there are positive criticism and we can also negate that in the context of negative.
00:08:05As Transport Commissioner at the Licensing Authority, I pay attention to both.
00:08:11I must say in Tobago, though, we have been getting some positive, very positive reactions from persons on the ground, from registered owners, from drivers and the average citizens.
00:08:23And they need for us to be here to lend that level of assistance.
00:08:28Any time you have enforcement or you have a call to do that which is right, let me say you will always have me say it, but we have to stand fast by our responsibility to execute what is required under the legislation.
00:08:44Let me tell you something, if the Licensing Authority or the Transport Officers decide that we will not carry out our responsibility because of criticism, I think we will have may have relevant issues surrounding our defiance under the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act.
00:09:14Will you always be looking in the direction of the businesses that have been selling these dark tints? Because it could be assumed that that is where motorists are getting the tints from.
00:09:30Well, Marlon, I'm glad you raised that. Let me just say this, though, because I heard it in your introduction a while ago.
00:09:36I just need to remind the public that the Ministry has taken a decision yesterday for the next six weeks to move along with what we refer to as a tin campaign.
00:09:48Let me say also to no enforcement officer, by that I mean no constable, no licensing officer, no traffic warden, no police, at this point in time, will issue, can issue a ticket for tint.
00:10:01We have decided not to do so, but however, enforce the law by the first phase in the context of going ahead with a media campaign, giving persons the opportunity to take steps to now conform to the new regulations.
00:10:17I looked yesterday at the legislation. The legislation has a provision within the legislation that treats it with installation or use of, and therefore it gives us the opportunity to educate persons with tints up,
00:10:33educate persons who intend to put tint on their vehicle, that you could find yourself being called upon to account in the event you choose to install or you choose to use tint that is contrary to the new regulations.
00:10:53Mr. Commissioner, I just want to be clear on that. So tint shops, what you're saying, that tint shops may be asked to account for these dark tints that they are in possession of and are selling?
00:11:08No, Marlon. I wouldn't say they are called upon to account. It's just specifically relevant to vehicles. Installation of the tint on the vehicle is prohibited. Keep in mind, tint shops do other work, with tint glasses for companies and so forth, et cetera, and obviously they will be in possession of those tints.
00:11:29What we have to be mindful though, is that persons don't take steps to install those illegal tints on the vehicles.
00:11:38All right. So, Mr. Commissioner, we do, and when I say we do, motorists now have six weeks to get their act together, to get their house in order, right?
00:11:50Yes.
00:11:51But you know, Mr. Commissioner, and I'm sure that you would have heard this argument before.
00:11:59So if we are speaking about this crackdown on tints, is it a crackdown on everyone? Because as you know, Mr. Commissioner, there is the claim, and sometimes you hear it from members of the public,
00:12:11well, I can do it because this organization is doing it. The police are doing it. Soldiers are doing it. Licensing officers are doing it illegally.
00:12:21So therefore, people feel that they have an entitlement to do it too. So is it a crackdown on everyone?
00:12:30Well, let me say, when it comes to the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, it is clear. The Act identifies who are exempted, how to be exempted, and as well as it gives clear specifications as to what the required tint, what the required tint, BLT or visible light transmitter ought to be.
00:12:50And let me say though, in addition to that, it does not isolate any individual who feels that they have a right within themselves to install tint.
00:13:01And let me say, as Commissioner, I have given my officers clear instruction. I can speak to my officers.
00:13:07Anytime anyone thinks within themselves they can reach that legislation, the Act is clear. It provides the opportunity whereby they can issue fixed penalty notices, or we will say tickets, to those individuals.
00:13:23And once you receive a ticket, it is not to argue with the officer. One has a choice to pay the ticket or go to court and contest the ticket. Simple.
00:13:33We also are saying that we will take the time to go out as a ministry on a media campaign to try our best to inform everyone as to what the requirements are.
00:13:48Commissioner, you think that people may be breaking the law because they just do not know what the laws are? And what are the penalties, Mr. Commissioner?
00:13:59Let me just refer to the penalties because I think to break the law is one of choice and ignorance is not an excuse for breaking the law. We have to appeal ourselves to what the law is.
00:14:10The penalties are basically, and I will go through them quickly, is failing to comply with the permissible visible light transmission of materials on the windscreen and window of a motor vehicle.
00:14:21That offence basically carries to a fixed penalty of $2,000 and three demerit points.
00:14:29Now let me say, if one gets received a ticket and that person decides to contest that, that individual can then contest that ticket and go to court.
00:14:38And if the matter reaches the magistrate court, the magistrate has a leeway of laying charges up to $5,000.
00:14:48Basically, I want to repeat, the fixed penalty offence is not $5,000. We have no tickets for $5,000. The fixed penalty offence is $2,000.
00:14:57Similarly, we have the same thing in the event you have scratches or major laminated issues on the glass or whatever, or bubbles, et cetera, that interfere with the visibility.
00:15:10That offence is basically a fixed penalty ticket of $450 and the merit points of $0.
00:15:16The final conviction in the event the matter reaches the court is $1,000.
00:15:21And just two more, installation of unauthorized curtains, screens, other devices, because we have been talking tint, curtains and so forth, is also an issue.
00:15:31That offence carries $750 and if it reaches the magistrate court, $1,500.
00:15:38And finally, if you have an exemption ticket and you fail to produce it, you fail to produce it to the officer, basically that carries a fixed penalty of $1,000 and $2,000 merit points and if it reaches the magistrate court, $2,000.
00:16:00Yes. Mr. Commissioner, I don't intend to detain you any longer because as I said at the beginning, I know that you were out late last night.
00:16:07You and members of your team, Mr. Commissioner, thank you very much for speaking with us this morning.
00:16:12We do appreciate it. Bye for now.

00:18:59So we are continuing our discussion this morning about the presence of Dengue in Trinidad and Tobago and the Ministry of Health's thrust to combat the problem.
00:19:06So joining us this morning, we do have Minister of Health, Terence Dialsing and Dr. Joanne Paul, Senior Pediatric Emergency Medicine Specialist.
00:19:15Thank you very much for coming this morning, Minister and Dr. Paul, it's a pleasure to meet you.
00:19:20If you remember Dr. Paul, Dr. Paul was one of the persons who were guiding us through
00:19:27the COVID pandemic, right? So Dr. Paul, thank you very much for that.
00:19:34Minister, so I know what you're going to tell me, you know, when I said the Ministry's thrust to deal with Dengue,
00:19:41I know what you're going to tell me, it's everyone's business to assist in this fight against Dengue.
00:19:46Correct. So Dengue is one of those situations where both public and government have serious roles to play together
00:19:56and know the world together. The government will do its part, but we do need householders.
00:20:03And this was brought forward on Friday's press conference when Dr. Osafo Fraser said that the
00:20:10main source of the mosquito breeding is in people's homes, in small to medium containers.
00:20:16He made that point. He said that same issue of small to medium-sized containers was what drove
00:20:23the Dengue in Brazil. And he is seeing that here now because they have visited for the year about
00:20:29150,000 homes. So the evidence is there. It's in your properties, it's in your homes, and we need
00:20:37the public to come on board. Yeah. Any additional deaths? No. So the number of cases, yeah, so
00:20:43the number of cases remain at 509 for now. The number of deaths, unfortunately, is five and
00:20:50deepest condolences to those families of those five persons who have died.
00:20:58But it doesn't mean that it's going to stay at 509. We do expect it to go up as more cases evolve.
00:21:05Yeah. This is where maybe Dr. Paul can come in. Of course. Dr. Paul, what's the message this morning?
00:21:10Yeah, well, I want to just focus, I want to remind persons about the how it goes of different phases,
00:21:15right? So even before I talk about the pediatric element, it's just once you understand how Dengue
00:21:21goes, you'll know what to look out for. So we have the, aside from the incubation phase, we have the
00:21:26fever phase that might last for about seven days. You have fever, you feel like if your eyes, you
00:21:32have pain behind your eyes, headache, break bone fever, you're lethargic, etc. You might vomit once,
00:21:39you might feel a little bit cargo and nausea. But the significant thing about that is that
00:21:45after that phase, you have the bad, bad, sick, sick, critical phase. And that's the one where
00:21:50one in ten people will get severe Dengue. And once you go there, three things might happen.
00:21:56But before you go there, we talk about soft signs. So if you have, if you're going towards the severe
00:22:01Dengue sign, you might have things like abdominal pain on the right upper quadrant. And that's
00:22:07significant. So if you divide your abdomen in three, in four quadrants on the upper here,
00:22:12you're going to have what the liver is, looking for pain there. You might see a little bit of
00:22:17bruising or bleeding in the gums. When you see that, that's your soft warning sign that you may
00:22:24be going into severe Dengue. And when you think about the critical phase, the second one with the
00:22:30severe Dengue, it's three sections. And if once you understand, you'll know what's happening to you.
00:22:35The first thing is where the blood, the fluid shifts from your blood to another place,
00:22:42the wrong place. So therefore it goes to your lungs, it goes to your bowels, you get short
00:22:47breath because you're having fluid in your lungs now, right? And then you feel even worse because
00:22:51you're feeling, you know, dehydrated. The second thing is you might bleed because your platelet
00:22:55count is going down. And the third thing is where your organs might be affected. So your liver,
00:23:00your kidney, your heart. And so once you understand those three things, you're looking out
00:23:05for bleeding, short breath, looking out for where you might get even a little stroke. And what we're
00:23:11finding now is that's the second stage. And the third phase is where you recover. The differences
00:23:16with the children we're finding is that they're having a lot more of the neuro symptoms. So
00:23:23therefore we call it Neuro Dengue. So with the children in the critical phase where they're
00:23:28very severe, we find they're having fainting episodes. They're confused, disoriented,
00:23:36they might even come with fits. So that's where the brain is affected. So again, once you
00:23:40understand the three ways of doing it, it's the fluid shifting, it's the blood, some bleeding or
00:23:48some organs like brain and kidneys and stuff being affected. And so children are having more
00:23:53neuro symptoms. And in addition, the other thing I was just telling Minister a short while ago,
00:23:58which he also mentioned, is that the platelet counts are dropping really fast with children.
00:24:03So therefore they're going from the fever phase to the critical phase really fast.
00:24:09And once the platelet count goes down, they start to bleed. So look out for that.
00:24:14So I think for parents, they have to understand that young children are especially at risk,
00:24:19but significantly, and I want to make sure I push this point, is the ones who have sickle cell,
00:24:26thalassemia, all those things in terms of blood issues, they are at higher risk. The ones who are
00:24:31obese are at higher risk. If you have your children who have those and you're thinking about dengue
00:24:36fever, those are higher risk of becoming severe dengue. Minister, you have some data for us? Yes, so I want to
00:24:43back up what Dr. Paul is saying. With the children, what we have noticed, and that's 6 to 20 age group,
00:24:51it accounts for 78% of the cases. So what Dr. Paul is saying is spot on. We have to be very
00:24:57concerned about the children. The age group that is most affected is that 11 to 15. And as she said,
00:25:05if you have a child with a blood disorder, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, obese, anything
00:25:10like that, pay particular attention. Keep that child with long sleeves, long pants, socks,
00:25:16mosquito repellents, sleep under a net, all the usual. And please get rid of all the water
00:25:22containing receptacles in your house, in your yard. Yeah. Doctor, I want to deal with a problem that
00:25:33we do have in Trinidad and Tobago. And it's a situation where it is required that we attend
00:25:44to a matter almost immediately and we sit down on it. And I think in the past and even now,
00:25:51because people have not or did not address the situation in an immediate way, a lot of them
00:26:02have become very, very sick, or in some cases they would have died.
00:26:06Speak about the urgency to respond to this. Right. Well, I think, again, if we understand
00:26:11things, I speak about the why, too, then we know what we're doing, right? So just two points about
00:26:17that. People have to understand that this mosquito, I call it a liming mosquito. It
00:26:25limes about the place. It sips, right? It doesn't go one spot and has a large meal.
00:26:30It limes all over. So it'll bite like 10 people before it's filled. You know, usually when you're
00:26:35sloppy mosquito, it's filled with blood. It's like one bite. This one limes around at Parai,
00:26:39going by Tom, Dick Harry. So it will go by 10 people, bite them a little bit. And you wouldn't
00:26:47even know when you get bite. And it's any time, it liming any time. So it might be going to bite
00:26:52you, dusk, dawn, doesn't really matter. So once you're aware of it could be anytime, anywhere,
00:26:58you have to be on your alert. And the second thing going to your question is that you have
00:27:02to be aware of your health, know what's happening and demand. So just as long as you understand
00:27:07what's happening, you understand one in 10 people, Marlon, will get severe dengue. It's not like,
00:27:14well, I speak to people and they're like, if it had to come, it had to come. No, no, no, no, no.
00:27:19Make sure you protect yourself, prevent. If you're at risk, make sure you get yourself,
00:27:23be more aggressive with it. But also, if you think you have dengue and you're in the fever
00:27:29section, you go to your health facility. It doesn't have to be the hospital, go to your
00:27:33district health facility, your health center. You have to take responsibility for your health. So
00:27:39if you think you're worried, tell your doctor, tell your nurse, here what, I think I have dengue.
00:27:44I would like myself checked up and demanded they take whatever blood test they had to do,
00:27:49check you out and ask them, what's my blood test? What's my results? What phase am I in?
00:27:55What's happening? So you just, you don't, people, as you said, they take a laid back approach with
00:28:02their health. With this, you don't want to get dengue. You don't want to be having severe dengue
00:28:08and especially for your child. You don't want to have your child have anything untoward. So we
00:28:13have to be a little bit more aggressive. Take health as our responsibility. As Minister said,
00:28:18it's the governments, it's the public together. It's all in synergy. You have your responsibility
00:28:23to prevent it. But also when you think you have dengue, you understand the three phases.
00:28:28You also must say when you go to your health facility, I'm taking responsibility to know what's
00:28:33happening here. Okay. And Marlon, that apathy that Dr. Paul is speaking about, about person's own
00:28:41health. If I have to get dengue, we'll never get it. It is that same apathy that people are not
00:28:47cleaning their properties. And we are encouraging the mosquito to breed in our homes, our yards.
00:28:58And this didn't happen this year. This has been going on for years now. And I really want to
00:29:05urge the public, if you did not get the message before today, we have been talking to the public
00:29:12since January 6th of this year about dengue. If you haven't gotten the message by now,
00:29:19please start to take some responsibility and help us. Help us to help you. Yeah. Speak to
00:29:27the claim. And I know that you have spoken about it, but speak to it again, because
00:29:32there was the feeling, the perception that the mosquitoes are breeding in dirty water. Yeah.
00:29:39So unfortunately, and I must call out the media on this one. The media fell for the propaganda
00:29:50being put out by certain corporations in South pointing to mossy drains and clogged drains.
00:29:56And we kept making the point that the preferred breeding site of the Aedes aegypti
00:30:03is clean, clear, stagnant water. That mossy water that TV and read and newspapers keep highlighting
00:30:13is not the breeding site of the Aedes aegypti. That might be the breeding site of the Culex mosquito,
00:30:19but not Aedes aegypti. So the public was unfortunately misdirected to blame drains
00:30:28and not look internally within your visas, your flower pots, your barrels, your buckets,
00:30:36your pain cans. And that is where the action is. And it's so unfortunate. And I say, I must call
00:30:43out the media on this one. They fell for that propaganda. And I think the media has made a
00:30:49shift in the past two weeks because I kept saying it. Yes. And in Friday's press conference,
00:30:56Dr. Osafo Fraser and Dr. Pedram Lalla actually brought test tubes to show
00:31:02they are alive in clean, clear water. And you put them in mossy water. And within two days,
00:31:06they are dead. They don't survive. They don't live in that type of water. The Culex mosquito
00:31:13lives there. And that is part of the misunderstanding of the Woodlands issue,
00:31:18which one newspaper kept pointing to. What is happening in Woodlands is not necessarily Aedes
00:31:25aegypti. They don't live in brackish water. That is the Culex. Yes, it's a mosquito, but it's not
00:31:34the dengue carrying mosquito. And we try to say that, but it's not sensational enough.
00:31:43It's science. To get people to understand science in this day and age of misinformation
00:31:48and disinformation is difficult, Marlon. Yeah. Doctor, is there any, I mean, we're speaking
00:31:54about dengue, but what about other things such as Zika and chikungunya? Should we be concerned
00:31:59about that too during this time? It's really, I mean, from a scientific point of view, it's an
00:32:04interesting time because it's a full combination right now. And I think people really have to be
00:32:09aware. We're having Zika and chikungunya definitely, but also an increase in leptospirosis.
00:32:17So people again, floods and, you know, we have raccoon, et cetera. Then we have a small increase
00:32:26in COVID also. And then as we just discussing outside here, a combination there that we have
00:32:31a next virus. So we have going around, we haven't been able to identify which one yet. And that is
00:32:36also causing the platelet counts to go down a little bit, affecting children a lot more,
00:32:41having more GI or gastrointestinal symptoms. So it's similar to dengue, but not quite dengue.
00:32:47And so definitely I'm telling parents, persons, look out for your older people, look out for your
00:32:55cells and your children. The risk factors for dengue generally are persons who have, and typically
00:33:00all of us, sugar. So diabetes, heart, kidney, and as we mentioned before, the obesity, et cetera.
00:33:08But for those who are at risk and older people, younger people, but there's a whole gamut of stuff
00:33:13going around and it's also Caribbean wide. So there's not just in Trinidad. We have dengue
00:33:19and COVID in Jamaica. You're seeing right now, you heard about the COVID spike right now in Barbados.
00:33:26So we're having that and they have no combination. So when I liaise with them, we speak about going
00:33:30through the same thing. And as we know in Brazil and Puerto Rico, we had the spike in dengue. So
00:33:36we have, it's Caribbean wise, it's in the Americas, but we in Trinidad could do more and make sure we
00:33:44protect all ourselves. So we were part of the entire thing, but we have to make an effort for
00:33:48our nation. All right. Minister, any specific areas where you're seeing an uptick in dengue
00:33:53cases? Yeah. So the three counties from the start of this year, Victoria, St. Patrick, and
00:34:00Kareny, and those three counties, Victoria counts for 50% of the cases, Kareny 14% and St. Patrick
00:34:1022%. So that's why we are focusing so much of our activities in those three counties, inclusive of
00:34:16spraying, because what is spraying will do, it'll give you a quick knockdown of the adult mosquitoes.
00:34:22But as we keep seeing, you have a new generation of mosquitoes every 10 to 14 days. You can't spray
00:34:28every 10 to 14 days. It is physically impossible and scientifically reckless, because what happens
00:34:35is that the mosquitoes will build up resistance. And then you go to spray again, and they look at
00:34:40you and nothing, nothing will happen. So that's why source reduction with what Dr. Osafo-Fraser
00:34:47says, the small to medium-sized containers in your yards, in your homes, that is where we have to
00:34:53focus on, and get the public to come on board to clean up those, get rid of those small to medium
00:34:59containers, those barrels, clean your gutter ends, your vases inside your house. Don't just pour the
00:35:06water, but you have to pour the water and then scrub it to loosen the eggs. And even if you shut
00:35:13the eggs, go down the drain, if you have a drain with clear water, those eggs could survive up to
00:35:19a year in that state. And next rainy season when rain comes, those eggs can actually survive for a
00:35:28year in that dried out state. So it is not just pouring out the water, it's scrubbing to physically
00:35:35loosen those eggs to get rid of them from your saucers. I would advise people with plants just
00:35:41get rid of saucers, just get rid of it. Plants like bromeliads, which are naturally,
00:35:48are naturally, physically reservoirs of water, get rid of bromeliads.
00:35:55Plants and the associated apparatus with plants, look, I was coming to work yesterday on Lady Young,
00:36:06just by the walk over, they planted six plants and they put a tire around each plant to protect
00:36:16the plant from being whacked to death. Yes. But all of those tires do what, Marlon? Harbour mosquitoes.
00:36:24So somebody deliberately put a plant with a tire on it to protect the plant, and when you look,
00:36:32you have houses on each side of the road by that walk over on Lady Young Road.
00:36:40How does the government, how does the Minister of Health address that? You have to just simply
00:36:46move the tires. I want to prioritise human life over plant life at this point in time.
00:36:54Dr. Paul, let's deal a little bit with treatment. How is this treated?
00:37:00Yeah, so it's really, really supportive, and that's why I'm saying that once you understand
00:37:05why and how and what happens, so for parents or patients normally, the normal population,
00:37:11if you're in that first phase, paracetamol fluids, I say double the amount of fluids,
00:37:17you have to be hydrated. If the fluid is shifting from your blood, otherwise,
00:37:21make sure you have enough there, and you rest up, so you observe, you make sure,
00:37:26and do those combinations. If you're in hospital, they have to give you a high amount of IV fluids
00:37:33and Paradol, and they'll be doing lots of checks for your blood count, and also they might have to
00:37:38give you things like blood transfusions. But, but Marlon, the main thing, I don't want persons to
00:37:44reach there, right? So I think the biggest thing is prevention. I now have mostor repellent in my
00:37:51car, in my house, like one of my creams. I know it's Lyme and mosquito at any time, so look around
00:37:57my house, clean up my stuff, look around my community, clean up, and also mostor repellent,
00:38:02and be aware of what's going to happen. I don't want to have dengue. I don't want to have severe
00:38:06dengue, so a stipend treatment, which is really important, prevention first, and if you do get it,
00:38:13paracetamol, rest, double fluids, and then afterwards, if you're in hospital, make sure
00:38:19you tell the doctors, let me know everything, what's happening with my care, and let those
00:38:24doctors to have their protocols, which most people do now, but make sure they follow their protocols
00:38:29for dealing with you. Yeah, Minister, I'll give you the final word. Yeah, so Marlon, thank you again
00:38:33for the opportunity for being here, and I really want to urge the population that this fight against
00:38:39dengue is a collective effort. It's a collective effort, and I cannot overemphasize the role of
00:38:47personal responsibility. Parents, keep your children protected, let them wear long sleeve,
00:38:52long plant socks, mosquito repellents, clean your premises, get rid of all these containers
00:39:01that allow clear, clean, standing water to be a nursery for mosquitoes, whether it's your plants.
00:39:10As I said, I prefer to prioritize human life over plant life. Plants and flower pots are one of the
00:39:18biggest sources of breeding for the Aedes aegypti. Do all the common sense things. Also, please
00:39:27collaborate with us, with the public health inspectors, when they come out to your properties,
00:39:32we are there to help you, and let us join in this Caribbean and Latin American fight
00:39:38against the Aedes aegypti. Minister, it was a pleasure speaking with you. Dr. Paul, thank you
00:39:43very much for coming this morning, and I believe this is not the last time that we're going to
00:39:48speak, you know, Minister, because I suspect it's going to be a long journey. Yeah, thank you very
00:39:54much again. Thank you. We are going to a very short break, but we do have this image for you.

00:42:59All right, so welcome back everyone. So confusion over the results following the
00:43:03presidential election in Venezuela. Both the government and opposition are claiming victory.
00:43:08We do have Dr. Carol Niles, the Director of the Institute of International Relations at the
00:43:13University of the West Indies. Dr. Niles, good morning. Thank you very much for joining us this
00:43:19morning. Good morning to you and good morning to Trina and to Bego. Thank you for having me.
00:43:25Of course. Well, Dr. Niles, I don't know if you got a chance to look at the newspaper this morning,
00:43:31but these are some of the scenes that we're seeing. Maduro must go. Yesterday,
00:43:39let me just show our viewers this morning. So anger in the streets, some of the stories in
00:43:46the newspaper this morning. So there are protests in Venezuela at this time following the elections
00:43:55earlier this week. Dr. Niles, as you look at this situation, because again,
00:44:00government is claiming victory, the opposition is claiming victory. As you look at all of this,
00:44:06what are your views this morning? So at the Institute of International Relations,
00:44:13of which I'm currently acting director, I would actually join others in calling for two things,
00:44:21calm and peace. So what needs to happen right now is there needs to be a transparent process
00:44:33of verification. And when we say transparent, we actually need the votes and the tasks
00:44:44and the votes and the number. So I'm going to just make sure I get the page.
00:44:49Every single polling station needs to account for every vote cast. And that needs to be done
00:44:59transparently so that the results can be verified so that we can move on with the process. That is
00:45:08perhaps the most important thing that needs to occur right now. And so that I think what's
00:45:15happening right now is that you're seeing was called for calm, peace while that process happens.
00:45:24Some people are even saying if that process happens, it is really important that process
00:45:30does occur in order for the results of the election to be respected. Yeah.
00:45:36Yesterday, since yesterday, I have been hearing and some commentators have been
00:45:46referring to past statements that a former president of the United States would, Mr. Carter,
00:45:55President Carter, would have made about the system, the electoral system in Venezuela.
00:46:02And some commentators would have said that in the past that system was given high praise.
00:46:09But it doesn't change the fact, Dr. Niles, that although this may be true,
00:46:16over the years, we continue to see these questions being asked
00:46:23about the presidential elections in Venezuela.
00:46:28Yeah. So, again, I think there have been some changes as of late, as of late. I mean,
00:46:37certainly there have been changes that have been enacted by Maduro. And what we are seeing now,
00:46:49is I think there's a lot of concern about what a third term might mean. And at the end of the day,
00:47:00we are not entirely sure what's going to happen next, because we're not entirely sure how the
00:47:07people of Venezuela will respond. And we're also not entirely sure how the current government of
00:47:13Venezuela is going to facilitate a review of the election process, which is why we are all
00:47:21right now calling for calm and peace. So the most important thing right now,
00:47:28and I really need to drive this point home, we need to allow the work of observers,
00:47:33the work of national and international independent bodies to continue unimpeded,
00:47:39which is why an institution like the Institute of International Relations, we're joined with
00:47:43other institutions like CARICOM and similar bodies to ensure that this region remains a zone of peace.
00:47:52Because I think if you look at this through an international relations lens,
00:47:57what you begin to be concerned about is instability in our region, right? And we want,
00:48:06this is not necessarily about one party winning, it's actually about the people of Venezuela
00:48:12winning, right? And their wishes being respected. And that's what we want to see happen across this
00:48:21hemisphere. So yes, you will hear different opinions from different commentators, and
00:48:26certainly you will also hear different opinions from different world leaders, including leaders
00:48:30in different Latin American countries, right? All those opinions are important, but the opinions
00:48:37that are most critical at this point in time are the opinions of the people of Venezuela.
00:48:42And we need those views to be most respected, which is why we always come back to,
00:48:48how do we go about this process of verifying the outcome? Because when you verify the outcome,
00:48:54what you're saying is that you're verifying that the will of the Venezuelan people
00:48:59is being, that their views, that their opinions are being respected and upheld.
00:49:07Yeah, just to continue on a point that you would have made, Doctor, because there are repercussions
00:49:14for us in this region too. And last night I was looking at the news on TV6, and a number of
00:49:23Caribbean leaders were approached. And while some were giving congratulatory,
00:49:33congratulations, if I can put it that way, some were quite hesitant, and some were waiting
00:49:40for this entire issue to be settled. So even within the CARICOM region, there is a level of
00:49:49concern, confusion, and is there the potential, Doctor, for what happens here,
00:50:03for, and what certain leaders say, it could potentially divide, and I don't want to be
00:50:12dramatic, but it could have certain leaders within our region looking at each other in a
00:50:19sort of strange way. So I think in times like these, and this is why, I mean, the global context
00:50:32right now is one of a lot of uncertainty in different parts of the world, right? Our job
00:50:37at the Institute of International Relations is to provide insight and clarity in times of
00:50:42uncertainty, which is why we're happy to be here, right? So when we look at this situation, we have
00:50:47to ask whose interests are, and what interests are at play, right? And so if you take a step back,
00:50:57there are two mighty big issues that, or two mighty big elephants in the room that need to
00:51:04be highlighted, right? I mean, there are a few others that are important, but they're two mighty
00:51:08big elephants. The first one is oil, right, and oil and gas, and certain countries in this region
00:51:16have an interest in those resources and how they are developed, and would therefore have an interest
00:51:25in, one, a peaceful resolution to this election outcome, because that would definitely, no one
00:51:35wants instability in Venezuela, because, I mean, if you put it a bit bluntly, that's going to stop
00:51:41the production of oil and gas. Instability is not going to be good for the industry. So there are
00:51:47some persons who their interests are going to be looking at that one major issue. The next major
00:51:52issue is realizing that we have almost, I believe, about, the last estimate I looked, I saw, was
00:51:58eight million Venezuelans outside of Venezuela right now that have left since the instability
00:52:07began, since the instability began in Venezuela, right? And since the imposition of sanctions, and
00:52:15what we have now is a situation where countries are looking, and many of those countries are
00:52:19hosting those said Venezuelans, and so they might have another, they might have an interest in being
00:52:25worried about another influx of migrants if things get worse. Now Trinidad and Tobago is not immune
00:52:33from both of the points I just made, you know, persons might be concerned because we might have
00:52:38a specific interest, right? I think what needs to happen now is that we need to have a very
00:52:44discussion about what this means for us, but also not make it about us. Yes, while we need to be
00:52:52very clear-eyed about, yes, these are the implications for Trinidad and Tobago, yes, we do have a unitized
00:52:58oil and gas field with Venezuela. Let's be open and honest about it. Yes, oil and gas, there will
00:53:05be implications for our own industry in Trinidad and Tobago where that's concerned. Yes, there may
00:53:11be concern about an increased flow of migrants, but let's not make this about us. Let's continue
00:53:17to make this about the future of the people of Venezuela, and ensuring that their voices are
00:53:23heard, their voices are prioritized, and put to the forefront because it's their future that's
00:53:28on the line. But Dr. Niles, there is another elephant in the room, and that other elephant
00:53:34is that situation concerning Guyana.
00:53:39Indeed, indeed. Well said. So, the board up and the vote that was held earlier this year
00:53:46by President Maduro, in terms of how they're claiming a significant portion of the exequibo.
00:53:54Now, it's interesting because certainly one does not expect the other party to necessarily
00:54:02have a different view, even though they may have a different approach. So, a lot of people
00:54:08are looking at that issue in terms of, okay, well, what does this outcome mean for that issue?
00:54:14And I think what a lot of persons are expecting is a different approach if there's a different
00:54:19person in the presidential seat. However, again, that's another great example of
00:54:29the interest in the region and how those play out. So, in terms of that issue in particular,
00:54:36the issue is one, yes, there is a border dispute, and there has been one for some time now,
00:54:43but the real concern there is peace. So, what we don't want is a war with another territory,
00:54:53or a military conflict with another territory. So, that's also interesting, and I'll close on this.
00:55:01That presents an issue where you have a potential conflict with another country.
00:55:06What we're looking at right now is a potential conflict from within. So, now Venezuela is now
00:55:14facing a situation where there was a potential conflict with another external entity, which is
00:55:22another country, which shares a contiguous border, but now they're now facing conflict from within,
00:55:31which is why you're going to hear leaders in this region plead for this region to remain a zone of
00:55:39peace and make a plea for the will of the Venezuelan people to be respected. So, you're right,
00:55:49you can call that indeed a third elephant in the room, but again, we need to ensure that even though
00:55:54that is a critical issue and we do not want conflict externally, we also don't want conflict
00:55:59internally in Venezuela either, right? And we need to ensure that we are continuing to put the will
00:56:05of the Venezuelan people first, and that those perspectives need to be placed at the forefront
00:56:12of the conversation. Yes, Dr. Keron Niles, thank you very much for speaking with us this morning.
00:56:16We do appreciate your perspective, sir. Thank you again. Thanks for having us. Okay, bye for now.
00:56:23So, it's time for a quick break, but first we have this for you. It's an image from a viewer.
00:56:28What is that? Cherry tomatoes or tomatoes? Tomato tomatoes. We're coming back, everybody.

00:58:02I've definitely seen a difference in my knees, the stiffness in my hips.
00:58:30Because it's an oil extract, I think of it like olive oil in between my joints that are

00:58:53The TV6 Daily Health Tip is brought to you by Omega XL.
00:59:23It's a powerhouse nutrient, crucial for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus,
00:59:47promoting bone health and supporting immune system function.
00:59:50But how does vitamin D3 relate to diabetes, you wonder? Let's delve deeper into this mystery.
00:59:55Vitamin D3 is a crucial factor when it comes to insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism,
01:00:01two key in the diabetes equation. What is insulin, you ask? It's a hormone that keeps a tab on the
01:00:07glucose in our bloodstream. Any impairment in its operation can result in escalated blood sugar
01:00:11levels, creating an environment conducive to diabetes. Vitamin D3 is seen as a game changer
01:00:17here. It enhances the body's response to insulin, leading to improved regulation of blood sugar.
01:00:23Additionally, it bolsters the functioning of the pancreas, an organ where insulin is manufactured,
01:00:28thus contributing to the maintenance of stable blood sugar levels. An adequate intake of vitamin
01:00:34D3, therefore, can go a long way in preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes. But the benefits
01:00:40don't stop at prevention. For those tackling diabetes, balanced vitamin D3 levels are crucial.
01:00:46Research reveals that those with sufficient vitamin D3 have improved blood sugar control
01:00:51and lower diabetes associated complications. So what's the key takeaway? Vitamin D3 is more than
01:00:58a vitamin. It's our body's crucial ally against diabetes for prevention and control. Ensuring we
01:01:04consume enough of this sunshine vitamin, either through sunlight, diet, or supplements, is an
01:01:09effective move towards improved health. In conclusion, vitamin D3 holds a significant
01:01:15role in our health, particularly for conditions like diabetes. This underrated vitamin is a
01:01:21potent force in our body's defense system, with roles extending far beyond mere bone health.
01:01:26It's influence across a broad sphere of our bodily functions, highlighting its importance in our
01:01:31overall wellness. Of particular note is its effect on our body's ability to regulate insulin
01:01:36sensitivity and glucose metabolism. These functions are crucial in preventing and managing diabetes,
01:01:42a condition that affects millions. It's fascinating how this simple nutrient,
01:01:46often overshadowed, plays such a crucial role in our health. Basking in the sun or partaking
01:01:52in a meal rich in vitamin D3 not only feels good, but it's also wonders for our health.
01:01:57So, the next time you enjoy some sunshine or a vitamin D3-rich meal, remember the incredible
01:02:03work this humble vitamin is doing for your body. The TV6 Daily Health Tip was brought to you by

01:04:37music
01:04:41from across the continent
01:04:57when my spirit is feeling low
01:05:01it's natural mistake
01:05:05they have powerful music there i'm playing that for my next guest this
01:05:08morning you know acting inspector ansel ford you hear that acting inspector
01:05:15look at mr ford mr ford congratulations uh thank you very much marlon pleasant morning
01:05:22pleasant morning chenan and diego how are you this morning i good i good i good okay it's a nice
01:05:27week mr ford a lot of energy uh this week you know of course we're heading into uh emancipation
01:05:33a lot of things happening in puerto spain you can go up to the savannah yes yeah the market is open
01:05:39right yeah but even outside of of our borders a lot of activity taking place yeah yeah all right
01:05:47well um marlon we um looking at the issue of um children let us say our our school children those
01:05:56who are eagerly awaiting exam results from csec cape as the case may be and their expectations
01:06:05and where do parents and guardians fit into this aspect of helping them to manage expectations
01:06:14because notwithstanding that they believe that they may have put in sufficient work and they
01:06:22have certain goals there are sometimes disappointments and if it is not managed well
01:06:31it could have a negative outcome all right so while i'm looking at the issue
01:06:38the mind of a of someone at that age right for them the results of their csec exams keep could
01:06:47be a life-changing situation for them all right as well as if they they don't succeed
01:06:55they can have this feeling of being a failure right and disappointing persons now their desire
01:07:05or their aspirations to achieve certain things it it means a lot to them it even means a lot to the
01:07:12parents right and the parents sometimes set real high standards sometimes um they may not be
01:07:22realistic but nonetheless the child now um is working towards meeting their goals as well as
01:07:32the expectation of the parents right so um some of them they don't want to disappoint their parents
01:07:40their teachers their guardians their friends right because all of them have their school friends
01:07:49have their interests to whether it's to go to a particular um let us say area of study whether it
01:07:55is that might be just to come back in sixth form so they're planning you know and they don't want
01:08:00to disappoint their friends in the eyes of their friends they may see or they may feel that they
01:08:05are less of right so we need to be able to assist them in managing the expectations it is critical
01:08:13modern so due to peer pressure that sense of feeling embarrassed the child sometimes harm
01:08:21themselves yeah and in the past we would have heard of um suicides or attempt suicide and
01:08:31the information would have come back that the child probably did not do well
01:08:35in exams right and that is a reality a reality that we as parents need to manage we need to
01:08:42mitigate against by how we prepare ourselves and well ourselves and how we prepare our children it
01:08:49will have condition in their minds right that things sometimes don't turn out the way you would
01:08:57like to but that is not the end of it right there are options a b c right and you as the parent or by
01:09:08having a sort of involvement with your your child or your children you help them now to be able to
01:09:17move forward notwithstanding whatever result that they came out with because it was not a do or die
01:09:26situation all right so modern in terms of understanding that the environment for them
01:09:34prior to exams the build-up was demanding it was stressful now they are under some pressure
01:09:43psychological pressure they're anxious they're waiting but there's so much uncertainty yes as to
01:09:49what the end result will be so they are in that state and you know as a parent by one let me say
01:09:57having that discussion with them that little family meeting that heart-to-heart you know
01:10:03discussion about your exam and notwithstanding what you expect all right this can be a result
01:10:10how are you going to deal with that right reassuring them that regardless of how you perform
01:10:17we love you right and we will continue to support you in terms of achieving whatever you want to
01:10:25achieve so you are setting the foundation that they know that even though i know i have my parents
01:10:34love and support to help me to go forward right so you need to avoid harsh comments or harsh
01:10:41criticisms let us say the child gets the result it's not so good right as the parent that child
01:10:50or children they want to make you prouder right and depending on how you respond to an area that
01:10:57they did not perform well if you are harsh you can you know cause that person to really
01:11:04break down right and it could have as i say negative consequences right so you don't want to
01:11:13go about this way where some of us as parents we compare siblings right and might say you didn't
01:11:22do as well as your sister you didn't as well as your brother because this or the other because
01:11:26you're stupid that's how some parents speak that is how we sometimes speak right not not not taking
01:11:34into consideration that you know you're actually damaging that that child's you know value for him
01:11:41or herself we have had a rough culture you know we we have we have right even in the schools that
01:11:49happens sometimes you know it does it does um but you know our teachers are i want to say more
01:11:55professional right i would want to say that all right yes so marlon um understanding that
01:12:03you need to discuss with them and how do you plan to move on from your examination so for
01:12:11instance we know that you wanted to be a engineer a doctor a lawyer right and police a police officer
01:12:24definitely marlon and you had to meet certain requirements into the subjects right to pre-qualify
01:12:33but you fell short that doesn't mean that your your let us say correct choice has been lost what
01:12:44it means now is that the parent by sitting with you and advise you now okay so you fell short of
01:12:50two subjects all right this is an approach we can take right that you go you acquire two subjects
01:12:58it may take you another year and then we look at continuing with your with your plan whether it is
01:13:05that you have the opportunity to repeat whether it is you have to go as a private candidate to do
01:13:12over your subjects right and that sort of planning and being i want to say realistic
01:13:20right with the child it manages expectations as well as disappointments right yes but but
01:13:28you know sometimes parents want to live their lives or have a second life through their child
01:13:37yeah so you may have let's say a household where you have everyone working and they're professional
01:13:43and and so on and they are in a particular field and then you have a child who decides i don't want
01:13:48to go into that field that all of us that all of my other relatives are in and that child is frowned
01:13:55upon yes my position is um acting inspector is that as long as whatever the child is doing is
01:14:05support um is is positive be supportive and that is so important right you made a point there and
01:14:15even yesterday in a conversation with someone i i made that point right yes that understanding that
01:14:21what you want for your child may not necessarily be what your child wants because of different
01:14:27interests of course and what you need to do as that parent or guardian is to lend that support
01:14:35and you made the point of it being positive obviously right um that it is something positive
01:14:40something meaningful that they would like to get into and all you have to do as the parent
01:14:46is support them support them true because you know that it is not anything that is negative but
01:14:53something that can build them help them to build character and whatever area it is right so that is
01:14:59a key thing malin now
01:15:03understanding malin that
01:15:08having a i want to say a good religious um grounding is important right and we don't
01:15:15want to leave that aspect out of the child's development and it also would help that child
01:15:21to make the necessary adjustment right and to let us say accept that okay i didn't do too well but
01:15:28i have feet and i would work hard and i will be successful at a later at a later stage right now
01:15:36explaining to a child what are some of the educational opportunities you have to develop
01:15:44yourself notwithstanding that you may not have done well at your c-sec or cape examination is
01:15:51important right because there are so many other avenues that you can certify yourself in right
01:15:58and it's part of your development and also widens your opportunities in terms of career paths
01:16:08employment right so don't just um limit it to you didn't do well and that's that we have to broaden
01:16:15their mind to see that there are other options be it whether it is it is not academic because we
01:16:23have to acknowledge that some children may not be academically inclined as others all right and
01:16:29they may be more skill oriented all right and nothing is wrong with your child becoming a
01:16:38trades person of course nothing is wrong with that because they can go on to be self-employed
01:16:45and in fact some of them become owners of businesses and they in turn hire people right
01:16:53with academic qualifications to work for them right of course so that is looking at it from
01:16:58you know uh i want to say a big picture and not just the um narrow view that we may hold it
01:17:04inspector i have a minute again oh sure all right so be mindful that within this time that your
01:17:12child or children await examination results there could be that pressure from friends
01:17:17upon getting results there could be that issue of bullying right as in you know people being
01:17:26negative to them by way of remarks so it could even happen in person it could happen on cyber
01:17:31cyberspace as in cyber bullying you need to have these discussions with your children
01:17:36and ultimately marla let us not leave out that um depression that they can go into that could
01:17:44lead to alcohol and drug consumption unknowing to you right which can be a serious issue for them
01:17:54um as much as we can let us i want to say hold you know the ideas brought forward here today
01:18:02and apply it to our individual situation so that at the end of the day we put our children
01:18:09at a better place in terms of managing their expectations so that we won't have a negative
01:18:17result yeah yeah it's a science you know parenting is a science it is um because i know that there
01:18:25are some parents and i heard it up to yesterday somewhere on social media where a parent is saying
01:18:32well i am not my child's friend yeah and i do understand that too but i think that we have
01:18:40had a culture in trinidad and tobago from time immemorial where we did not see the benefit
01:18:47in a child expressing their views yes we never saw the benefit in
01:18:56in saying positive things to some to our children yes and i i always mention the benefit of the
01:19:02touch that touch that gentle touch yeah it has the potential to change the outlook of an individual
01:19:11definitely marlon right so um um acting inspector um it was a pleasure having you here
01:19:18this morning congratulations again and i'm sure that we'll see you right back here next week
01:19:23and enjoy the holiday um this week this week thank you maybe working right to enjoy it thank you
01:19:29all right with a very short break everybody we have this for you it's from a friend
01:19:35we're coming back
01:19:50i have this pain here and going up the step it was awful and since i've been taking the
01:19:56product it has eased up her joints and so live long and stay strong
01:20:11hello
01:20:14i'm seeing you at five right of course babe i'll see you at five
01:20:26so
01:20:56so
01:21:27anytime you leave your keys in the ignition when you pull up to your driveway
01:21:32you make yourself an easy target for theft and robbery make it tough for criminals don't give
01:21:39them a chance switch off your engine remove your keys and stay alert a message from the
01:21:47trinidad and tobago police service
01:22:04no no
01:22:17gonna go back
01:22:25i'm gonna serve you lord and spirit and truth i'm not gonna go back
01:22:37now
01:22:47you're not going to turn back i'm not going to look back keep it running keep it running
01:23:10ah boy a lot of energy and positive vibes in studio this morning right so we do have gospel
01:23:16singer arlene collins muhammad and she's here to share with us her latest work entitled not
01:23:23gonna go back and that's the song yeah and i was saying to arlene i was saying you know sometimes
01:23:30you hear a song and it just sounds good and it's a song that doesn't have to grow on you yes arlene
01:23:37i think you have a hit you know thank you very much marlon yeah truly appreciate hearing you say that
01:23:44we'll have to put studio we'll have to put that on rotation here right and sometimes play it every
01:23:49morning we're not gonna go back amen so arlene um give us the message in this song well um it came
01:23:56from luke 1732 but the lord says he remembers lord's wife and you know she was the only person
01:24:04that the lord said to remember and he said because you know she was moving forward but he said he
01:24:12said to remember her because she looked back so you know even listening scriptures before
01:24:18is reminding us not to look back to our old habits you know things that will keep you back in life
01:24:25you know so that is where this song truly came from and me i'm a businesswoman and he had to put
01:24:30us in alleys more and less more right and myself i go through so much trials and i have to keep
01:24:36reminding myself every day to look back don't go back don't turn back don't slip back just keep
01:24:42moving forward because you know you have persons in courage persons that help to walk that straight
01:24:47path that will lead them to everlasting life you know so there's where this song came from
01:24:53to encourage the community to encourage the nation that they can get away from their old habits
01:25:00move forward positively and see a total difference in their lives did you write the song yeah yeah
01:25:06yeah based on whatever i go through i will you know take my phone tape it go in my bible
01:25:12you know pray and ask god what does he want me to write and he gave me the song completely
01:25:16simple but effective to touch the hearts of the people how long did it take for you to write the
01:25:23song what was the preparation like well i mean within a month period this song was completed
01:25:29i mean doing this song will start from i'll be started in february and be finished in june
01:25:33because you know the up and down with me you know but um that's about a month it took me to
01:25:39really get this song together and tell us about this journey into gospel music well i love you
01:25:45lord and you know mommy teach me to sell man with a basket knocking door to door but what she do
01:25:53though is make sure that sunday to send me to sunday school so if i'm sending school i i know
01:25:58about the lord singing and worshiping him and praising him and i've seen from that tender age
01:26:04at this age what god has done in my life and i'll always find myself with a brush in front of the
01:26:10mirror singing and singing unto the lord i love the lord so i just started to write songs write
01:26:18songs and i started to sing them so i say you know it can't be kept to myself you know i had a trial
01:26:25i went through the alleys more and i wrote a song that says you got to have faith in jesus
01:26:30and i wrote the next song said that jesus changed my life for good he delivered me
01:26:34so i keep writing songs and you know i said i had to go there and sing them my son said mommy
01:26:39these songs is hits and i heard you said that just now you know song is up you know so you
01:26:45say mommy this song these songs are set they can't keep them to yourself so i know i had to go there
01:26:51and sing them out to the nation to the world to touch whoever this song can touch to bring
01:26:57transformation in their lives i get the feeling that you are inspired by what you see around you
01:27:04life yes yeah yes let's see if arlene writes a song as to what happens here during the interview
01:27:11this morning i would like to see what song comes out of that but how has the response been to
01:27:17this song the song has been launched the song has been launched on 99.5 the first session yes and
01:27:23the song got great luck hit of the week immediately yeah after a few plays because persons has been
01:27:30calling in and requesting this song to be played you know as the listening song i'm thinking about
01:27:36things they're not gonna go back to so the response has been absolutely amazing it has
01:27:43launched a few radio station and also tv station and persons are responding to it really really
01:27:49amazingly loving the vibes in it loving the message most of all in the song not going back
01:27:56studio let's let's hear a bit of arlene again let's hear the message
01:28:13now
01:28:25do what i used to do
01:28:40oh yeah come to me come to me come to me come to me let's come to me
01:28:55i'm not gonna turn into a
01:28:59alina i like the song i like the song i like the message i like the music yes um so is it that you
01:29:06plan to can we expect other songs other music definitely definitely yes yes it's changing lives
01:29:15and you know in this nation and around the world we need to have songs that can bring change to
01:29:21yeah positive change we need we need it we need it so yes i'm going to be doing
01:29:27many many more songs yeah so is there an opportunity for people to see you perform
01:29:33this song anywhere yeah i mean a person's already calling we have a conference coming up
01:29:38some women 18 someone had already called me to actually song to play on the ad and a lot of
01:29:44women will be in the conference to come to sing this song as women come up to the altar so they
01:29:50can meditate on what they're not going to go back to the moving forward in jesus name yeah yeah yeah
01:29:57yeah now there are you know you have the gospel music right yes and there are some genres if i
01:30:06can call it that so there's hip-hop there's dancehall gospel yes there's r&b gospel yes
01:30:14what sort of niche do you like i i love jazz i love most of the time the lord gave me a song
01:30:21i find myself singing a jazz but some other song is more kind of old school
01:30:26you know even my first interview that said but this song is in a place by itself because it's
01:30:32just that's unique and different it's just not something that you hear every day so that's why
01:30:38you know persons are gravitating to it and then the message mainly of not going back but moving
01:30:43forward it's not in a place by itself so the old school kind of something yeah yes yeah it has
01:30:49something in it you know ali we need to have some more songs like these written by you right
01:30:54thank you is there anything else you'd like to tell us before you leave us this morning listen
01:30:58i want to say a big shout out to cleo richardson he's my producer he did an amazing job candace
01:31:04who would have gonna do the backup on this song you know kit and kurt who would have done
01:31:10because suddenly people saw all major platforms so you can feel free to contact with me um 373
01:31:170073 all the calls for me on um spotify all the major platforms and ali mohammed voice quick
01:31:28voice quick
01:31:30um so um next point i want to make so is it that people can can contact you for performances of
01:31:42course definitely i'm not only to minister music but i have a powerful testimony of where my life
01:31:49started and you know being the the owner of arlene's morning charity purchasing building
01:31:56yeah yeah yeah god has been amazing so i encourage persons testimony of how they can do it and mainly
01:32:03seek in the face of god so they can call me just to minister i will definitely come speak to that
01:32:10for me arlene when we're speaking about religion speak about the importance of religion to our
01:32:17young people because before your interview i think inspector ford would have spoken about that
01:32:23in the presence of god yes speak to that a little and i want to firstly say the bible clearly tells
01:32:29you you know parents please take this to train a child up in the way that the child should go so
01:32:35even the child get older the child will not depart they may stray but they will come right back to
01:32:41what you instill within them so i'm saying to you parents to find yourself sitting with your
01:32:47children praying with your children communicating with them as the inspector said you know sometimes
01:32:53they may not do well but still be positive and let them know that you will help them along on the
01:32:58journey seek ye first the kingdom of god and his righteousness then all things shall be added
01:33:05unto you parents you can help these children to be completely successful putting the lord
01:33:12jesus christ first in their lives in your life in the household very very important yes yes i've
01:33:20seen changes in many lives children we have something called strong nation trend that we did
01:33:25for four years 208 children from the nelson street duncan street mangroves georgette area
01:33:33and you see that this trend just requires that love that attention i see it could have come
01:33:40the hug up on the word i love so you see the one that love so parents show your children love
01:33:46be careful what you will say through your mouth to your children because there is life and death
01:33:52in the power of the tongue speak positive into your children's life from this day moving forward
01:33:59you're going forward you're not going to go back yeah yeah aline yes it's a pleasure thank you very
01:34:07much for coming this morning thank you for the positive music yes and thank you for the the
01:34:12positive message and the energy this morning thank you it is greatly appreciated thank you
01:34:17thank you bye for now and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors let's hear some
01:34:20more music from aline before we go out yeah we're coming back with more
01:34:36now
01:34:51turn back

01:38:49all right that's the voice there of the black stallion leroy calise all right so we are
01:38:55discussing at this time echoes of black stallion classic concert and of course um we are going to
01:39:03speak about the performances and so on so we do have with us this morning randall donova
01:39:08calypsonian and committee member randall thank you very much for coming this morning thank you
01:39:13very much let's talk about the echoes of black stallion yes so good morning to you um miss
01:39:19hopkinson good morning to your viewers um of course as you know the black stallion everyone
01:39:24knew him as the the caribbean man basically um of course you know that he he gave a lot to our
01:39:30country he gave a lot to the caribbean the diaspora of course so many many persons know who is who is
01:39:36dr leroy calist right um the black stallion and um you know since his passing uh in december 2022
01:39:44i mean there have been lots of tributes uh pouring out uh to him far and wide and um and of course
01:39:51prior to his death um you know he would have suffered a stroke sometime in 2013 and um and
01:39:58during his birthday which is usually well which is well was well still as you can see um the 24th
01:40:04of september um each year uh the family through various persons um would have hosted concerts
01:40:11in his honor and um and of course seeing that he passed um the family wanted to host you know a big
01:40:17tribute to him uh which is coming up on the 4th of october and of course in commemoration of his
01:40:23birthday which would have been he would have been uh 83 he would have celebrated his 83rd birthday
01:40:29um on the 24th of december this year so this is why the concept of echoes of of black stallion
01:40:35classic concert um came about and um and of course it's going to be a spectacular show we have his
01:40:42friends um who he would have um uh who have supported him and vice versa uh jamu from
01:40:49grenada um ross ailey as well as the mighty gabby they were his close friends and you know and they
01:40:55are coming to trinidad and tobago shows uh to really um take part in this grand celebration
01:41:02and of course there are lots of of of acts uh which which which of course you would see um some
01:41:09of our main acts we have from um trinidad the reigning clips of monarch um uh marshall montano
01:41:16of course the grandson of of dr callist um key van callist um he will be featuring um largely
01:41:24on on the set um we also have entertainers such as brother valentino the baron those are the
01:41:30veterans um super blue johnny king uh we have the the young monarchs as well chuck gordon um
01:41:36kareena shade doing o'connor tizzy o'connor terry lyons um we have raskamander gypsy devon seal
01:41:44so there are a number of artists um that will be taking part in this production so we're all
01:41:49excited about it um it's the fourth of october at um supper that's southern academy for the
01:41:55performing arts at 7 30 p.m and um and where tickets tickets are already on sale on island
01:42:02tickets we have early bird tickets at 250 dollars and um and then we have general admission tickets
01:42:09special reserve general admission which is 300 special reserve 400 and um and of course ticket
01:42:15outlets of course um it's in port of spain basil bistro which is right opposite smoky and bunties
01:42:21on on arapeta avenue that's number 81e arapeta avenue we also have um in the south um whack
01:42:29radio on coffee street san fernando as well as arteries by the park
01:42:33yes uh in san fernando and in tobago angels courier service um the physical tickets will
01:42:37be out um later this week but the the online tickets are available all right
01:42:43all right so we do have uh kevan khalis she's on the line kevan good morning
01:42:50good morning good morning good morning yes kevan good morning uh so uh randall has has spoken a lot
01:42:57about the about the concert uh um and some of the artists that are going to be performing
01:43:04at the concert um what more should we know about about the concert um echoes of black stalin
01:43:14well firstly good morning teacher and everyone
01:43:17i'm listening one second everyone
01:43:23don't want to leave i got
01:43:28amazing as randall already said we have a big cast we have the old we have the young we have
01:43:34the in between you name it we have from different countries we have so far we have
01:43:41and everyone will be in full representation of dr leroy khalis the black star yeah so is it
01:43:48kevan that we are also going to expect performances of some of the songs that your
01:43:58granddad would have sung when he was alive yes we are getting strictly black stalin music
01:44:07one or two in between a little change we also have this steel pan he has some amazing renditions
01:44:12he has a lot of pan songs we have people like len boogsy stop we have duke one stewart we have
01:44:18chucky flogo forbes you have a mixture of everything it's going to be fully black stalin
01:44:25and you know kevan let's talk a little bit about the black stalin
01:44:30because i think that our perception of him for people who don't know him personally but we would
01:44:38have seen him on the stage and we know about his performances we would have i suspect know
01:44:47some of the things that he was interested in or what he was concerned about because we would have
01:44:52seen it uh portrayed in his songs but when you think about the black stalin leroy khalis one of
01:45:01the greatest calypso nians ever one of the goats right kevan when you think about your grandfather
01:45:08tell us a little bit about him well my perspective would be very different of course to me that was
01:45:16just my grandpa just like any other person who has a grandfather it's just he happened to be a
01:45:23famous calypso nian so honestly for me i used to just look at him as just being my grandfather
01:45:30not only that back then occasionally you know he would have been just going out he would leave the
01:45:37country back then i would have been younger so i would just think grandpa just leaving the country
01:45:41grandpa just go in there he just go in there you know so for me growing up it really just felt like
01:45:47a grandfather that anybody else would have had you know but now if you were to ask me that now
01:45:52as i'm older you know my perspective would be different you know but back then he was just
01:45:58a normal grandfather just like how everyone else has one yeah what was it like for you
01:46:05when you got through that stage where you just saw him as your grandfather
01:46:11when was it you really saw him as the as the black stalin on the stage um uh giving uh his
01:46:19renditions or belting out his calypsos to thousands of people and the impact that he was having on the
01:46:28crowd when when it hit me that really actually that hey kivan your grandfather is black stalin
01:46:36is when i had my breakthrough in coming out to perform my breakthrough really i'm sure he was
01:46:42an extempore not a calypso but he had a big part to play in that because every masquerade finals
01:46:49we would have the tv locked on and we would be listening we'd be taking in what's just happening
01:46:54and over the past few years just constantly taking in the extempo you know saying i'm
01:47:00watching it seeing gypsy seeing lingo seeing all these different people black sage i decided hey
01:47:07i wonder if i could do this boy you know and then he encouraged me also with my grandmother
01:47:12to participate in some of tuko workshops they also had a big factor to play in that
01:47:18tuko would have had a lot of workshops for a lot of young people at that point in time
01:47:23and really actually that was my breakthrough point realizing that hey
01:47:27kivan stalin is your grandfather you know it's about time yeah i try something you know and i
01:47:35decided you know let me try something and that was my first year i believe that that was my first
01:47:39year going into the calypso i did not make the finals but it was my first year and i decided
01:47:46you know what i'm gonna try this after that every single year after that i've been a finalist at
01:47:53the final and he for sure had a big factor into that the coaching the preparation now even at that
01:48:00time he had the stroke but that really was not like a slowdown it really wasn't he had his notes
01:48:07to give me i would come and sing for him he would tell me this he would tell me that he would guide
01:48:12me he would let me know what to do what i shouldn't do so i was able to grasp that while he was still
01:48:19here and really guided me in a particular direction that allowed me to excel yeah um
01:48:26studio how how much um more minutes do we have because all right so i i have a bit more time
01:48:32before i bring in uh randall back into the conversation but kivan you feel you feel the
01:48:40the you feel a bit of weight on your shoulder because of who your granddad was and because of
01:48:48the of the field that that that you are involved in calypso extempo and so on that you you you feel
01:48:57that you have this responsibility to fill these uh very large and big boots how do you maneuver
01:49:04in this sort of environment i mean you're walking around with the name at least you know uh kivan
01:49:11well yeah definitely just to fill in that regard what i tend to do i love i like to tell other
01:49:18people i try my best to be kivan khalis another ride on the black stalin you know aspect of it
01:49:25now obviously i have the khalis name i kind of get away from that so you know i have ways to
01:49:30work on it but i tend to make sure that people do that this is kivan khalis you know and the
01:49:37khalis name is still there but i i tend to try to be my own person in terms of what it is i do
01:49:44how i do what i do the different style and in terms of what i sing how i sing it
01:49:50different things i try my best to brand myself as an individual by myself but definitely still
01:49:56a construct because a lot of people are still there when i'm on stage just like your grandfather
01:50:03boy so as much as i try to brand myself as an individual by myself i can't run away from it
01:50:11i've performed just like him
01:50:14yeah so don't run away from it uh kivan don't run away from it at all he can't he can't yeah
01:50:23what more um um you think that uh our viewers should know about this well of course i mean
01:50:28there are a lot of surprises um it's important to note that you know we we also have all-stars band
01:50:32um they will be accompanying the the uh the artists um uh of course um backed by well our
01:50:39musical director juice man right um so it's a celebration of his life and legacy um as kivan
01:50:45said we have the pan element um of course we have len booksy sharp duvon stewart um keegan kelly's
01:50:52who's a panacea as well um so it it's gonna be grand three canal as you see um so basically in
01:50:59the promotion we had various different types of teasers and artwork so we had the the foreign um
01:51:04acts we had the soca veteran acts we have the the youth in calypso um as well as of course the pan
01:51:10element um so it's important to note that you know um even we are grateful to our sponsors most
01:51:18importantly the ocm group um group of companies as well as angostura um je guides funeral home
01:51:26so really and truly it's just a matter of coming out enjoying purchasing your tickets celebrating
01:51:32his legacy i mean if you want to hear songs like you know we can make it if we try um nothing
01:51:38strange you know all all of his all of his songs doherty run something um portrait stay in a life
01:51:44um it's loads loads caribbean man and basically um the majority of the acts will be reliving his
01:51:51song all right so it's it's a big celebration and um it's most importantly buy your tickets um i
01:51:57mean the early bird tickets are out um i don't need tickets as i said it's 250 early bird general
01:52:03admission 300 um special reserve 400 and of course our ticket outlets in south wack radio and coffee
01:52:10street are to this by the park um basil bistro which is opposite smokies in port spain and angels
01:52:16courier tobigo so we just want to thank everyone for you know for being for supporting the stalin
01:52:22throughout the years dr caliste and you know we just want everyone to come out and support
01:52:26you know go on the facebook page he was of sure and to be good that's the facebook page that is um
01:52:31and it's promoting the the concert and just keep on pushing yeah kevan i give you the final word
01:52:39on the concert
01:52:43we are just encouraging everyone to come up you will not want to miss this as randall said we
01:52:48have it all every single stalling song you see that one stalling song that we made a long time
01:52:54yes if stalin's in that song unlikely he did sing it and guarantee to get every single thing people
01:53:02don't miss it you want supper to be filled and again as randall said we'd like to thank everyone
01:53:07that supported and by far we all know the anchor behind stalin anti-fans he's the driving force
01:53:15yes anti-fans behind everything that he is doing so we just like to say chance that also that's my
01:53:22grandmother she's the person who's putting things in place to get this done she has been
01:53:28the person who has been at his side through everything yes and we just really want everybody
01:53:34to come and we're gonna have a grand time at supper yeah kevan it was a pleasure speaking
01:53:39with you and randall and randall thank you i was right you're right you're right um you know
01:53:46and we just i mean we just want to you know continue um you know you know supporting the
01:53:51of course kevan you know i mean whereas he said he has his own personal um portrait but of course
01:53:57he's a callist and also kevan will be featuring and we just want to you know to support thank
