Among the recovered hostages, Metzger, Peri, and Munder were from Kibbutz Nir Oz, captured during Hamas’ October 7 attacks. Munder’s family was released in a truce in November. Popplewell and Buchshtab, taken from Kibbutz Nirim, were also identified among the deceased.  Investigations and Controversies Reports indicate that some hostages might have died due to suffocation caused by an IDF strike on a nearby Hamas target. The IDF is investigating the exact causes of these deaths. Earlier, Israeli media suggested that an IDF preliminary assessment pointed to possible suffocation from carbon dioxide in the tunnels where the hostages were held.
