00:00China is taking swift action as super typhoon Yagi approaches, with around 400,000 people
00:05evaluated ahead of the storm's expected landfall on the tourist island of Hainan later this
00:10Friday.
00:11According to state media, transportation has been heavily impacted across the region.
00:17Trains, boats, and flights remain suspended for the second day in a row, while schools
00:22and parts of southern China are closed as Yagi draws nearer.
00:27This powerful storm, which has doubled in intensity after causing destruction in the
00:31northern Philippines earlier this week, is now packing winds of up to 240 kilometers
00:36per hour, or 150 miles per hour, near its eye.
00:41Meteorologists warn that Yagi could cause catastrophic damage to Hainan and neighboring
00:46Guangdong, China's most populous province.
00:49In an advisory released Thursday, the Indo-Pacific Tropical Cyclone Warning Center described Yagi
00:55as extremely dangerous and powerful, cautioning that the typhoon's impact could be devastating.
01:01For context, a super typhoon is equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane.
01:07Since Wednesday, all tourist attractions in Hainan have been shut down due to warnings
01:11of massive and destructive winds.
01:14The Hong Kong-Macao-Zhuhai Bridge, the world's longest sea crossing, has also been closed
01:19as a safety measure.
01:21The region has already begun experiencing heavy rain and strong winds, with forecasts
01:26expecting rainfall to reach up to 500 millimeters.
01:30Though Hainan is no stranger to typhoons, only nine of the 106 storms that have hit
01:35the island since 1949 were classified as super typhoons, according to reports.
01:42Chinese officials believe Yagi will be the strongest storm to hit the southern coast
01:46in a decade.
01:48After hitting Hainan, Yagi is expected to make landfall again in northern Vietnam late
01:53on Saturday, though it will likely have weakened by then.
01:57In Vietnam, tens of thousands of people in the provinces of Hai Phong and Thai Binh are
02:02being evaluated as a precaution.
02:05The Vietnamese military has mobilized over 460,000 officers to assist with the storm's
02:11impact.
02:13Officials are concerned that regions crucial to the country's socioeconomic development
02:17could be severely affected.
02:19Vietnamese Deputy Agriculture Minister Nguyen Hong Hiep cautioned that carelessness could
02:24lead to catastrophic damage.
02:26As a precaution, four airports in northern Vietnam, including Hanoi's Noi Bai International
02:31Airport, will be closed on Saturday ahead of the storm's arrival.
02:36Earlier this week, Yagi caused floods and landslides in the northern Philippines, claiming
02:41at least 13 lives and forcing thousands to evaluate.
02:45Scientists point out that climate change is making storms like Yagi stronger and more
02:50frequent.
02:51Warmer ocean waters fuel more powerful storms, while a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture,
02:57leading to heavier rainfall.
02:59Yagi comes on the heels of Typhoon Shanxi, which struck Japan last week, killing six
03:04people and injuring hundreds.
