On Sunday night, Israeli airstrikes targeted several military sites in central Syria, leading to the deaths of at least 18 people, according to the Syrian Health Minister. The strikes took place near Masyaf in Hama province, and 37 others were reported injured.
A UK-based monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), reported a higher death toll of 26 and stated that one of the primary targets was a scientific research center believed to be involved in weapons development.

Israel’s Silence and International Reactions As is often the case with Israeli military actions, the Israeli government declined to comment on these reports. However, Syria’s foreign ministry quickly condemned the strikes, labeling them as “blatant aggression,” while Iran’s foreign ministry called it a “criminal attack.”
Israel has a history of targeting sites linked to Iran in Syria, as it considers Iran its primary regional adversary. The airstrikes have intensified since the war in Gaza began in October of last year, following attacks on northern Israel by groups like Hezbollah, which operate from Lebanon and Syria.
How Were the Strikes Carried Out? According to reports from Sana, the state-run Syrian news agency, Israeli aircraft launched missiles at around 11:20 PM local time, striking several military targets in Syria’s central region. Some of these missiles were intercepted by Syrian air defense systems, but the damage was extensive.
00:00At least 18 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes targeting military sites in central Syria, according to the Syrian health minister.
00:08Another 37 individuals were reported injured in the strikes near Masyaf, located in Hama province, on Sunday night, as reported by state news agency SANA.
00:18However, a UK-based monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, SOHR, reported a higher death toll of 26.
00:28They also confirmed that one of the primary targets was a scientific research facility believed to be involved in weapons development.
00:36As usual, the Israeli military has not commented on the strikes, a common stance in response to international reports.
00:44In the wake of these attacks, Syria's foreign ministry condemned Israel's actions as blatant aggression, while Iran's foreign ministry called the airstrikes a criminal attack.
00:54Though Israel has not officially acknowledged these recent actions, it has previously admitted to conducting hundreds of strikes in Syria in recent years.
01:03These strikes have mainly targeted sites linked to Iran, Israel's longstanding adversary, and allied militias.
01:11Tensions have escalated significantly since the war in Gaza began in October last year, following cross-border attacks from groups based in Lebanon and Syria, such as Hezbollah.
01:22According to SANA's report, Israeli aircraft launched missiles from Lebanese airspace around 2320 local time on Sunday, hitting multiple military sites.
01:32The Syrian military reported that some of the missiles were intercepted by air defense systems.
01:38The strikes also caused significant damage beyond military targets.
01:43The Masyaf Wadi al-Oyoun highway was hit, a fire broke out in the nearby Harabas forest, and critical infrastructure was damaged, including a fiber-optic cable and a high-voltage power line.
01:55Syrian state television aired footage showing structural damage in the port city of Tartus, west of Masyaf.
02:02SOHR provided further details, stating that the strikes devastated several military facilities in the scientific research area of Masyaf.
02:11Among the 26 reported dead were both Syrian soldiers and civilians, as well as individuals affiliated with pro-Iranian groups.
02:20The observatory also claimed that Iranian Revolutionary Guard officers had been stationed at the site for six years, working on missile and drone technology.
02:30However, Iran's foreign ministry denied reports that any Iranian facilities were hit, with a senior source further rejecting claims of an attack on a military research center involved in chemical weapons production.
02:42While Western intelligence agencies have previously accused Syria of producing chemical weapons in violation of international law, the Syrian government has denied these allegations.
02:53This marks the latest in a string of Israeli strikes on Syrian soil.
02:58SOHR data indicates that since the beginning of the year, there have been 64 air and artillery strikes by Israel on Syrian targets, damaging or destroying around 140 sites, including weapons depots and militia bases.
03:13So far, these attacks have claimed at least 208 lives, including both combatants and civilians.
03:20In April, Iran accused Israel of targeting a consulate building in Damascus, an attack that killed two senior commanders of Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
03:30In retaliation, Iran launched 300 missiles and drones, though most were intercepted by Israeli and U.S.-led forces.
