Drone Incursions into NATO Airspace

The situation escalated further when Russian attack drones breached the airspace of NATO members Romania and Latvia. Both countries reported the incidents, prompting calls for a robust response from the military alliance. Latvia’s President, Edgars Rinkevics, confirmed a Russian military drone crashed in eastern Latvia, while Romania reported that a drone targeting Ukrainian infrastructure had entered its airspace.

Intensified Fighting and Strategic Moves

In recent weeks, Russia has intensified its aerial attacks while also defending against a significant Ukrainian cross-border offensive into the Kursk region. Ukraine launched this offensive on August 6, aiming to force Russia to redirect its forces from Eastern Ukraine. However, Moscow has intensified its efforts, marking its most significant territorial gains in almost two years.

On Sunday, Russia claimed to have captured the village of Novohrodivka, located just 20 kilometers from the key logistics hub of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. Before the war, Novohrodivka had a population of over 14,000.

Putin’s Strategic Goals

Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his primary objective: capturing the eastern Donbas region, including Donetsk. He suggested that Ukraine’s Kursk offensive has inadvertently made it easier for Russia to achieve this goal.
