The explosion occurred late on Sunday, resulting in the death of the individual carrying the bomb, while a passerby was injured. According to police at the scene, the man was carrying a backpack filled with explosives. Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer confirmed that the device detonated before the man could reach a more densely populated area.

In a joint statement, Hamas and Islamic Jihad emphasized that their so-called "martyrdom operations" within Israel would persist as long as what they termed the "occupation's massacres and assassination policy" continues. This statement appears to reference Israel's ongoing military actions in Gaza and the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31st.

The conflict in Gaza has been ongoing since October 7th of last year when Hamas militants launched an unprecedented attack across the border into Israeli communities. This assault resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of around 250 hostages, according to Israeli reports.

Israel's military response has been intense, leading to widespread destruction across the Gaza Strip and the deaths of at least 40,000 people, according to health authorities in the enclave.

The Tel Aviv bombing took place just about an hour after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in the city, aiming to negotiate a ceasefire to bring an end to the 10-month conflict between Israel and Hamas.

With tensions running high and fears of a broader regional escalation, the urgency for a ceasefire agreement has only increased, especially in light of Iran's threats to retaliate against Israel following the assassination of Haniyeh.
