OK, now we're going to go to the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour.
00:06
Really nice place to go on a hot day to cool off in the coal mines.
00:30
Just look for this building to get your tickets.
00:33
At the time this video was edited, adults 13 to 64 were $10, seniors 65 and over $9.50,
00:43
military $9, children 3 to 12 $7.50, and kids under 3 were free.
00:52
There are group rates of 20 or more people, but you do have to call ahead to get those
00:58
reservations.
00:59
And parking is free.
01:02
And they do have handicapped and motor coach parking.
01:06
While you're waiting for your underground carriage, I highly suggest you go into the
01:11
museum which is located to the left of the hoist house.
01:17
This small but mighty little museum does go over a lot of information about the Lackawanna
01:24
Coal Mine and coal mines in general.
01:27
Definitely worth a stop.
01:34
When it's time for your tour, you go to the mine car loading platform, and you'll see
01:40
your ride.
01:45
It's a little bit cramped, as you can see.
02:09
A little bumpy on the way down.
02:23
And you do have some dark travel time, so be prepared for that.
02:27
And also be prepared at the bottom where they stop and give a little toot.
02:42
You are then instructed to disembark, walk a short distance, and then their tour begins.
02:50
And we had a wonderful tour guide, by the way.
03:07
There is a lot to learn and see and do.
03:10
And I'm going to have my new friend tell you a little bit about it.
03:16
Originally opened in 1860, the coal mine tour takes you through the winding underground
03:21
gangways and rock tunnel, past three different veins of hard coal, the mule boy, the nipper,
03:27
the monkey vein, and the dead chute.
03:29
Each tour group is led by a miner, who, while walking you through the tour, explains the
03:34
fascinating methods used and the heroic efforts involved in deep mining's history.
03:39
While on the tour, you travel 300 feet beneath the earth's surface and experience this national
03:45
award winning historical attraction called the Lackawanna County Coal Mine Tour.
03:50
The once abandoned and now restored hard coal mine is a cool 53 degrees year round and provides
03:55
you the opportunity to see a day in the life of the area's workers that powered the industrial
04:00
revolution.
04:01
A definite must see with your own eyes.
04:16
The 300 feet descent down the slope takes three to four minutes, while the walking portion
04:21
is approximately a half mile and lasts approximately one hour.
04:26
Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended, and light jackets are available to rent for
04:31
anyone who does not bring his or her own.
04:34
The mine is handicapped accessible with some restrictions.
04:37
A handout is also available for the hearing impaired who are not accompanied by an interpreter.
04:43
Please contact the tour office for specific limitations on accessibility.
04:49
That was a lot of awesome information.
04:51
Thank you very much.
04:53
And now we're going to see a little bit more, so you know what to expect when you come to
05:00
visit.
06:00
After we pick up our token miner certificate, we are ushered back into the coal mine car
06:14
for the 300 foot ascent back to the light.
06:20
But it's not over yet.
06:29
As we're traveling, just so you know, the coal mine tour is usually open from April
06:36
to November, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, at least at the time we did the tour.
06:43
And it was open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
06:46
However, the last tour begins at 2 45 and you must arrive by 2 p.m. in order to buy
06:53
your tickets.
07:00
Hey, well, look at that.
07:18
We made it.
07:20
And then we just had to wait for our tour guide to be kind enough to set us free.
07:27
Thank you, sir.
07:32
What do you think of it, Elias?
07:34
Do you like it?
07:35
Yeah.
07:36
Now, outside, don't forget to tour the grounds.
07:40
There's plenty of other things to see.
07:47
Oh, and also, there's a really neat penning machine.
07:59
So if you're into that, there you go.
08:06
Well, we all had fun and I think you will too.
08:11
And as always, have a great day.
