Hurricane Beryl charges toward our islands where it is likely to bring powerful winds and devastating flooding.
Seigonie Mohammed joins us now with the latest news on Beryl as it inches closer to the islands.
Transcript
00:00Thank you very much and good evening, Irvashi. You know we are part of an
00:04incredibly rare event with this particular system. It took Beryl 42
00:10hours to go from a tropical depression to a major hurricane, something that has
00:15only been done about six times in history in the Atlantic Ocean. So let's
00:19bring this system into view for you so you can see what we're going through
00:24right now. And it is going to be a very serious event for us already seeing
00:30those feeder bands, those clouds moving in because currently Beryl is centered
00:34just under 400 miles east southeast of Tobago. It is moving west northwest over
00:39the open Atlantic Ocean and the threats are not just real, they are imminent. A
00:45reminder of the alerts this evening. A red level hurricane warning is in place
00:50for Tobago while the tropical storm watch is currently in effect for
00:53Trinidad at the orange level. If you are in Tobago, take prompt action to
00:58safeguard your property, life and means of livelihood. If you are preparing, it
01:03should be completed at this time because the Met Service advises that there is
01:08going to be a slow decline in the weather which has already started with
01:11which will bring bouts of rain and strong gusts above 70 kilometers per
01:16hour. There is a strong probability of dangerous seas with big pounding waves
01:21endangering small boats as well as activity along the shoreline and
01:24offshore. So seas churning and strong currents will make navigation dangerous
01:29in Tobago. If you are in Trinidad, we are under an orange alert. So wind gusts
01:34faster than 55 kilometers per hour could be felt ahead of Beryl starting this
01:40evening, particularly in the northern and eastern areas. According to the Met
01:43Service near midnight, stronger thunderstorms and more rainfall are
01:48predicted. As Beryl now tracks west, more islands are on alert. And if we
01:53take a look at what's going on here with these islands, we have now seen an
01:57inclusion of the Dominican Republic and Haiti on its southern coast. And we also
02:03have those warnings in effect and the tropical storm warnings in effect as
02:07well for the islands. The hurricane warnings. These are happening right now.
02:10So no good news on this end as another area will likely develop to the east of
02:15Beryl that is now being monitored. A tropical rainstorm 96 l while currently
02:20not expected to reach the high intensity that Beryl has, it will still
02:24hamper recovery to areas that experience a major hurricane strike
02:28from Beryl and leads to even more damaging damage to infrastructure
02:32rather that has been weakened or compromised by Beryl. So we will
02:35continue to monitor these areas for you into the overnight forecast and through
02:39midweek as we monitor that second area of interest. But that said, that's what
02:44we have for you right now. Again, preparations need to be finalized at
02:47this time. Overshares would move for both islands.
