00:00 This little white room in the Hobart Repatriation Hospital has been Devarshi Decker's home
00:06 for the past seven months.
00:08 The Indian national, who's also known as Dave, moved to Hobart last year to pursue
00:12 his dream of studying at the University of Tasmania.
00:15 Even I also had a dream to make something for myself.
00:23 Moving to a foreign land is not that easy for anyone of us.
00:30 The dream turned into a nightmare last November, when Dave was allegedly assaulted on a night
00:35 out in Salamanca.
00:36 His lower body is now paralysed and he is slowly going blind in one eye.
00:41 Doctors say it's likely Dave will never walk again.
00:44 My body has a mind of its own.
00:47 It doesn't want to move according to my wish like it was before.
00:54 Dave's parents have spent every day by their son's side since arriving in Hobart last month.
00:59 They don't know what they'll do when their tourist visas expire in July.
01:04 We are not in a position to return back to India due to our financial condition.
01:16 That is why I am very helpless.
01:21 Going back to India is no solution for him, especially when the nearest hospital from
01:25 his hometown is 130km away.
01:27 Dave does not qualify for funding under the National Disability and Insurance Scheme
01:32 because he is on a student visa and his family can't afford to pay for his ongoing care
01:37 in Australia or India.
01:40 Right now Dave is being supported by his insurance company until he is making medical progress.
01:46 But once he is done with his medical progress, there is no support available here for him.
01:52 Our ask is to help us in supporting him to live here.
01:56 Whether that means getting support from NDIS to help him with his medical equipment, support
02:03 work and whatever supports he needs.
