Quilting is a multi-billion-dollar industry but an often-overlooked art form. A new exhibition is celebrating the impressive legacy of Canberra’s quilting guild that's been bringing crafters together for 50 years.

00:02It's a community stitched together with conversation, creativity and craftswomanship.
00:09I just have to come and pray because it's not very often I win anything.
00:13The Canberra Quilters is the oldest patchwork group in Australia.
00:18What started as a tiny newspaper ad in 1976 led to lounge room meetings
00:24and now a group of several hundred members.
00:27When you give someone a quilt and it's folded, they always hug it.
00:34You can depend on it. It's that connection of warmth and care.
00:39The group is in the spotlight at a new exhibition at the Canberra Museum and Gallery,
00:45celebrating quilting as an art form.
00:48It's not very much respected as a medium.
00:50It gets shoved in the line of women's work and something Granny used to do.
00:55It's something that takes thousands of hours and they're no longer just made from scraps,
01:00no longer just on a bed.
01:01They're actually made specifically for exhibition.
01:05Quilting is a multi-billion dollar industry in North America.
01:08But this show has plenty of Australian flair and many of these intricate designs have won awards.
01:16Every work in this exhibition is a true labour of love.
01:20This quilt was started in Scotland in 1959 and wasn't completed until 1981 here in Canberra.
01:28For many quilters, it's about the connection as much as the craft.
01:33The friendships you develop when you're sitting quilting together
01:36are a little bit like the friendships on a very long car trip.
