At 12 midnight, the country would ring in the year 2024 with celebration inclusive of fireworks.
But for those who have animals in their care, extra caution would have to be taken. We spoke to Veterinary Surgeon and Clinician Dr. Rhea Rambarran to give you some tips.
Alicia Boucher has the details.

00:00 Fireworks with their loud explosive bangs are exhilarating to some people, but to animals,
00:06 including pets, livestock, zoo animals, birds and insects, they can cause stress, anxiety
00:12 and trauma, so says veterinary surgeon and clinician Dr. Rhea Rambaran.
00:17 Tonight, many vet clinics are going to receive emergency calls for pets that have injured
00:23 themselves or even gotten hit by cars, just trying to escape the panic that these fireworks
00:30 induce in them.
00:31 She says for establishments like zoos and shelters, animals need to be safely secured
00:36 in their enclosures, with food and water to act as a distraction from the noise.
00:41 If you can play some loud music for them to drown out the explosions outside, that would
00:47 be helpful as well.
00:49 If you have pets at home, what you can do is get yourself firework ready, close all
00:54 the doors and windows, close the curtains, turn on the TV, turn on the radio, have a
01:00 party with your pets.
01:01 Give them some of their favourite treats, reassure them in their favourite spots, like
01:05 in their beds or in their chill spots where they may hang out with you and your family.
01:10 Dr. Rambaran states that it is vital that you stay with your pets during the display
01:14 of fireworks, as their owners are their source of comfort and reassurance.
01:20 Avoid chains and leashes, since animals may get tangled, they can strangle themselves.
01:26 Instead, use cages or kennels.
01:29 If you cannot bring your pet inside, please lock your pet in the kennel while the fireworks
01:34 are going on.
01:36 For cats, cardboard boxes, crates or other cosy hiding spots are advised.
01:41 If you have to give your animal a sedative, Dr. Rambaran says you should consult your
01:46 vet first, as not all human drugs are safe for animals.
01:50 It is my real hope that we accelerate the transition to noiseless fireworks, so that
01:57 we can avoid unnecessary terror, injuries and loss of life in horrifying ways.
02:03 Dr. Rambaran is hoping for a more humane society.
