00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're setting our sights on some first person shooters that
00:04 just missed the mark.
00:12 Shadow Warrior 2
00:18 The Shadow Warrior series is a fantastic throwback to the old school shooters of the 90s starring
00:23 a rad dude with a tuge shooting dudes and it honestly doesn't need to be much more
00:29 than that.
00:30 Continuing the trend of shooters taking inspiration from the rebooted 2016 entry in the Doom series
00:35 as well as hints of the Borderlands franchise with its constant stream of new weapons to
00:40 turn enemies into piles of goo, players are constantly engaged in frenetic firefights
00:45 full of blood, bullets and surprisingly competent melee combat.
00:50 Complete with up to 4 player co-op, the Shadow Warrior series did receive a follow up in
00:54 2022 but Shadow Warrior 2 remains the high mark for the series.
00:59 While some might be turned off by the game's foul mouthed protagonist and juvenile humor,
01:05 we promise you've never had this much fun playing with your Wang before.
01:15 Cold Winter
01:16 On the surface, Cold Winter appears as nothing more than your standard military first person
01:21 shooter and to an extent, that's true.
01:24 With a wealth of different weapons at your disposal as well as the ability to craft different
01:29 equipment by looting bodies, you guide protagonist Andrew Sterling as he jumps, swims, shoots
01:35 and ducks for cover through a myriad of locations as he fights to take down a shady group intent
01:41 on global destruction.
01:43 What makes the game stand out is its surprisingly gripping story and the game's physics engine
01:48 which allows players to create their own cover and enemies will realistically fall to your
01:53 gunfire or explode into little chunks if you bring out the big guns.
01:57 While the physics aren't as mind boggling as something like Half-Life 2 released only
02:01 a year earlier, it's still impressive for the PS2 era and keeps what would be an otherwise
02:07 standard shooter entertaining throughout.
02:10 Star Wars Republic Commando
02:12 The 90s and 2000s had no shortage of Star Wars games, but some got more attention than
02:25 others.
02:26 And while Republic Commando has seen numerous re-releases in the years since its initial
02:31 launch, it still hasn't developed the fanbase or franchise ability that it deserves.
02:37 Instead of putting on the familiar Jedi robes, players are instead kitted out in the clone
02:42 trooper armor and along with three squad mates the player can issue commands to, are sent
02:47 on various missions to both familiar and unfamiliar worlds in the Star Wars universe.
02:52 The shooting is top notch and your AI companions are capable soldiers even when you're too
02:58 entrenched to issue direct commands.
03:01 Although more linear and shorter than many of the other entries on our list, there's
03:05 a reason this game maintains a dedicated fanbase almost two decades later.
03:16 Dark Watch - Curse of the West
03:28 With a few exceptions, The Wild West is a surprisingly untapped era for video games,
03:34 and one combined with supernatural elements is even rarer.
03:38 Dripping with atmosphere and just oozing cool, Dark Watch straps players into the boots of
03:43 a cowboy recently turned vampiric Jericho Cross, awesome name, and through the player's
03:49 choices can either rid themselves of their affliction or succumb to it and bring about
03:54 a new apocalypse.
03:56 With a mix of steampunk and real world weaponry, Jericho unleashes hell on the demons and monsters
04:02 standing in his way and can even tap into his growing vampire abilities through choices
04:07 that can lead him down the path of good or evil and unlock powers tied specifically to
04:13 either path.
04:14 The usually drab visuals work in the game's favor establishing the bleakness of the world
04:19 and some of the game's creature designs are horrifyingly impressive.
04:29 The Darkness - The Darkness
04:41 Whereas many first person shooters focus on the biggest arsenal they can give you, The
04:46 Darkness instead makes you the weapon.
04:50 Developed by Starbreeze Studios and based on the comic book of the same name, player
04:54 character and made man Jackie Estacado is possessed by the Darkness, which manifests
05:00 as eel-like tendrils that speak to him through the campaign.
05:04 These hellspawn can attack enemies or even provide cover or allow Jackie to infiltrate
05:09 stealthily with the snakes silently killing and occasionally eating the many enemies waiting
05:15 for Jackie.
05:16 With superb voice acting, tight gameplay and dripping with atmosphere, plus you can eat
05:22 the hearts of your enemies and how metal is that?
05:25 The Darkness was successful enough to earn a sequel, but both have been forgotten to
05:29 time and slipped back into the shadows.
05:37 Call of Juarez Gunslinger - Call of Juarez Gunslinger
05:51 We don't get many modern westerns outside of the Red Dead series these days, but you
05:55 could do a lot worse than Call of Juarez Gunslinger.
05:59 The cel-shaded comic book style graphics give the game a substantial bump in color that
06:04 helps it stand out not only from most of the other entries on our list, but also in the
06:08 genre itself.
06:10 Told from the perspective of an unreliable narrator, the levels themselves can be affected
06:15 during gameplay should the player character get a bit too carried away with his stories
06:20 as he crosses paths with some of the most famous names in the wild west.
06:25 Shooting is decidedly Arcadian in nature, and that's honestly its biggest strength,
06:29 as along with the rest of the game, it doesn't take itself too seriously, focusing instead
06:34 on making sure the player is having a great time leveling up their cowboy and scoring
06:39 as many headshots as humanly possible.
06:52 Titanfall 2 This one probably hurts the most.
07:06 Overshadowed by a terrible launch date sandwiched between the latest Call of Duty and Battlefield,
07:12 Titanfall's sequel never stood much of a chance against those heavyweight and legacy
07:17 shooters.
07:18 Thankfully, in the years since, it has become far more appreciated, and fans are still demanding
07:23 a sequel almost daily.
07:26 With some of the best shooting and movement in the genre (these were the original COD
07:30 creators after all), as well as a story that lets the player bound in and out of BT, one
07:36 of the greatest mechs in gaming, hands down, as they parkour and wallrun around brilliantly
07:41 designed levels, in particular Effect and Cause, which might be one of the greatest
07:47 uses of time travel in a video game, nothing in the years since has even come close to
07:53 this modern shooter masterpiece.
08:02 Prey 2006 Honestly, either of the Prey games could
08:14 have ended up on our list, but we're going to focus specifically on the 2006 Prey by
08:19 Human Head Studios.
08:21 A year before Valve was thinking with portals, protagonist Tommy was using them to escape
08:26 an alien ship along with all manner of physics and gravity-defined puzzles with a plethora
08:32 of alien weapons at his side.
08:34 The game's use of portals and an ever-shifting perspective can make for a trippy experience,
08:40 and while the player can't directly create portals themselves, they can use the ones
08:44 created by enemies to reach new levels, as well as spirit walk through certain obstacles,
08:49 and use this ability to revive themselves upon death.
08:53 Although Arkane Studios' 2017 Prey had nothing in common other than a name, it too suffered
09:00 the same fate despite being arguably Arkane's best title since Dishonored, and failed to
09:05 develop much of a following.
09:12 Bullet Storm Like some of the best summer blockbusters,
09:25 Bullet Storm is only interested in the player having a good time, especially replaying the
09:30 title through Duke Nukem's Tour in the full clip edition re-release, Bullet Storm easily
09:38 fits into the 90's era shooters with its crass humor and constant stream of inappropriate
09:43 comments and dick jokes.
09:46 Bullet Storm continues to differentiate itself from other shooters of the time with its focus
09:50 on rewarding the player for every kill with hilarious environmental-specific names.
09:56 The more inventive the carnage, the greater the reward, and it's rewarding every single
10:02 time.
10:03 Each gorgeous landscape the player is dropped into is punctuated by set pieces that are
10:08 easily some of the game's biggest highlights, and the characters, although at times obnoxious,
10:13 do have some great back and forth dialogue that will have you laughing at just how juvenile
10:18 and over the top it is.
10:31 Singularity The impact of games like Bioshock and Half-Life
10:38 on first-person shooters cannot be understated, but every now and then, a game takes those
10:44 elements and adds a new wrinkle to the formula, and that's exactly what makes the criminally
10:49 underrated Singularity stand out.
10:52 Jumping the player back and forth between 1985 and 2010, combating increasingly supernatural
10:58 events while completing objectives in one that affect the other is constantly engaging
11:04 throughout, and that's not even mentioning the main draw of the game, the TMD, Time Manipulation
11:11 Device.
11:12 This handy little gadget can be used in everything from puzzle solving as you degrade and rewind
11:17 objects within their timeline, to combat which is endlessly entertaining.
11:23 Upgrading the TMD unlocks stronger powers like the ability to create a bubble that stops
11:27 time for anything unlucky enough to be inside.
11:31 Plus, any game that lets you do this is automatically a good time.
