00:00This one might just places I've never heard of. Seems to you really like to travel.
00:04Welcome to Mojo Plays, and in honor of God of War turning 20 this year,
00:09we are going over 20 fun facts about the series that you may be unaware of.
00:14A fierce warrior, a killer made hero, a man made a god!
00:19But before we dive in, we publish new content all week long,
00:23so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:27Re-placing an Icon
00:30God of War 2018
00:33Let them suffer. The death of Zeus is all that matters.
00:39Before Christopher Judge took up the mantle of Kratos for the 2018 game,
00:44the character was played by T.C. Carson.
00:46Carson portrayed him from the 2005 original all the way through 2013's Ascension.
00:52The reason that director Cory Barlog gave for replacing him
00:56was because the studio wanted motion capture and voice work to be done
01:00by the same performer, and Carson didn't match Kratos' stature.
01:04But what you may not have known is that Carson was never notified about the change by Sony,
01:10a decision he deemed unprofessional in a later interview.
01:14Both are excellent in the role,
01:16and to Judge's credit, he refused to ever voice a younger version of the character
01:20out of respect to Carson.
01:23This is likely why, in the Valhalla DLC for Ragnarok,
01:27the younger version of Kratos you come across at the end doesn't speak.
01:38Recycled Concepts
01:39God of War, Ghost of Sparta
01:55The prequel Ghost of Sparta takes several concepts from previous games
01:59and makes them its own.
02:01Kratos' younger brother, Deimos, actually appeared before this game
02:05in a bonus unlockable video in the 2005 original.
02:09Birth of the Beast shows him dying,
02:12abandoned by the Spartan army for being weak,
02:14and ending up in the underworld.
02:17While the game version is kidnapped by the gods to avoid a prophecy,
02:21both end up resenting Kratos for not saving him.
02:24Similarly, another unlockable video in the 2005 game,
02:28A Secret Revealed,
02:29details Kratos questioning his mother about his mysterious father.
02:33But before she can tell him,
02:35a curse triggers,
02:36turning her into a monster that Kratos has to kill,
02:39which also happens in Ghost of Sparta.
02:41Finally, a key location in the game is Atlantis.
02:45The underwater city was planned to appear in God of War 2,
02:49but was cut.
02:56Love him and leave him, God of War 3.
03:06Kratos kills just about every god he comes across in the Greek games,
03:10with God of War 3 featuring his highest body count.
03:13However, the one he doesn't kill is Aphrodite.
03:17No, their encounter ends much more peacefully and sensually.
03:22You can play the sex minigame with Aphrodite as many times as you wish.
03:27But director Stig Asmussen once revealed in an interview that this could have been very different.
03:32Originally, if players initiated the encounter a second time,
03:36the camera would have panned away before a record scratch was heard.
03:39The camera would have panned back,
03:41revealing Aphrodite trying to kill Kratos with a dagger.
03:44There would have been a quick time event,
03:46and Kratos would have then kicked her into the underworld.
04:05There are many recognizable features about Kratos' design,
04:10not least of which is his massive red tattoo that he got in honor of his brother Demas.
04:15However, the tattoo wasn't always red.
04:18In early concept art, it was blue.
04:21This was actually the plan pretty close up to the game's reveal.
04:25The reason it was changed last minute was because a staff member notified
04:29creator and director David Jaffe that Kratos looked an awful lot like the barbarian class in Diablo 2.
04:36Well, red was always more of Kratos' color anyway.
04:45Odin as a father.
04:46God of War Ragnarok.
04:49God of War Ragnarok.
04:57God of War Ragnarok Ragnarok Ragnarok Ragnarok
05:09Director Eric Williams stated he was certain Schiff would say no.
05:14But when the offer came through, the actor happened to be in the car with his son,
05:18who is apparently a big fan of the series.
05:21His son told him to say yes to whatever the role was,
05:25so long as that meant he got to appear in God of War.
05:27With his dad not being much of a gamer,
05:30he even wrote up a two-page synopsis of the previous game to help convince him.
05:35You killed your own son!
05:37It wasn't my choice.
05:38I had no choice.
05:38There's always a choice!
05:40The Meaning of Boy
05:42God of War 2018
05:44You are right.
05:46I do not believe you.
05:48Come, boy.
05:49Throughout a good chunk of 2018's God of War,
05:53Kratos refers to Atreus as boy.
05:55It becomes a somewhat demeaning thing to say,
05:58a bit dismissive of his son's personality and spirit while also being cold.
06:03Kratos' distance makes sense,
06:05given their strained relationship at the start of the game.
06:08But this was actually not by design.
06:11For a long time during production,
06:13the team just didn't have a name picked out for Kratos' son.
06:17Christopher Judge was instructed to simply call him boy,
06:20and it ended up working out for the better for their dynamic and characterization.
06:27The Speed of Jason MacDonald
06:30God of War Collection
06:40Although it doesn't have the most infamous trophies around,
06:43the God of War series still has a couple of tough ones.
06:46One from the remastered version of the first game requires you to beat it in under five hours,
06:52though this at least can be done on any difficulty.
06:55The trophy is called Speed of Jason MacDonald.
06:59If you've ever gotten it and wondered who the hell Jason MacDonald is,
07:03he was a combat director for the series,
07:05and he held the record among the developers for speedrunning the game,
07:09and so was given a digital trophy to commemorate this.
07:20Trophy title changes.
07:22God of War 3 Remastered.
07:33Speaking of trophies, the third game had a couple whose names were a bit... suggestive.
07:39So much so that Sony apparently thought their names ought to be changed
07:43when the remastered version was released in 2015.
07:46One called Are You Horny to Win required collecting all the Minotaur horns,
07:51and became Horn of Plenty.
07:54Another, simply called Hooker, was earned after You Killed Hades,
07:58and was changed to Depths Below.
08:01Gotta keep those trophy titles family-friendly.
08:04You know, for all the kids playing one of the bloodiest games ever created.
08:13A meaningful release.
08:16God of War Ragnarok.
08:18Storm is getting worse.
08:22I'll get them ready.
08:23As many may remember,
08:25God of War Ragnarok was meant to release in 2021,
08:28but was delayed to 2022.
08:30This was due to a combination of COVID
08:33and injuries that Christopher Judge suffered in 2019,
08:37for which he needed surgery and time to recover from.
08:40The original release date would have lined up with the game's story.
08:44The 2018 game ends with the beginning of Fimble Winter,
08:47which lasts for three years and precedes Ragnarok in Norse mythology.
08:52While Sony missed that connection in a fun coincidence,
08:55the new release date occurred during another.
08:58The day before the game was released on November 9th,
09:01a blood moon occurred.
09:03This special type of eclipse was noteworthy,
09:05since one of the events that also precedes Ragnarok
09:08is the darkening of the sun and moon,
09:11which happens in the game.
09:19The Origin of Kratos' Name
09:22God of War is obviously packed
09:35with plenty of gods and goddesses made famous by myth.
09:38And while the series' protagonist seemed like an original creation,
09:42that's not necessarily the case.
09:43Or, at least he isn't where his name is concerned.
09:46In Greek mythology,
09:48Kratos or Kratos is the lesser-known God of strength,
09:51power, and sovereign rule.
09:53His name and power is about where the similarities end, though.
09:56Do you see gods of Olympus?
09:59Do you need more proof than this?
10:05Kratos and his three siblings were enforcers of Zeus,
10:08with him being the one to chain up Prometheus.
10:10But, in God of War 2,
10:12Kratos is actually the one to free the Titan.
10:14We're using free in a very loose sense here.
10:19You have freed Prometheus from the torment of the gods.
10:24Censored Human Sacrifice
10:25God of War
10:31Kratos has committed some vile acts over the years,
10:34often throwing anyone under the proverbial bus to reach his goals.
10:38In the first game,
10:39Kratos comes upon a caged soldier of Athens
10:41during the Challenge of Poseidon section.
10:44At first grateful to see him,
10:45the soldier soon realizes Kratos plans to sacrifice him
10:48in order to continue.
10:50The player must push the cage up a steep incline
10:52while fighting enemies,
10:53all while the soldier begs for his life.
11:03It's a pretty brutal scene,
11:05and one that Japanese and PAL versions of the game censored.
11:08In those versions,
11:09the soldier is replaced with an undead legionnaire.
11:12Not quite as impactful.
11:19A less iconic look.
11:22I didn't come back for you.
11:26No!
11:31We've mentioned his blue tattoo,
11:33but that wasn't the only thing that changed about Kratos' design.
11:36There are a ton of video game characters
11:39that started off looking one way
11:41before changing drastically for their final appearance.
11:44Kratos is now one of the most iconic characters in video game history,
11:48not just in personality,
11:49but also in design.
11:51But the studio went through several looks before him.
11:54Monster!
11:54Wait!
11:55Stay back!
11:57Get away from me!
12:02Some concept art shows him as being heavily armored,
12:05including a helmet that would obscure his face.
12:07Others depict him with long hair,
12:09while another shows him carrying a baby on his back.
12:13But the look Kratos ultimately ended up with,
12:15with his pale white skin,
12:17bald head,
12:17and bright red tattoo,
12:19was definitely the right choice.
12:21Ten years, Athena.
12:23I have faithfully served the gods for ten years.
12:27When will you relieve me of these nightmares?
12:29A different Pantheon.
12:31God of War, 2018.
12:38What'd you find?
12:41When it was decided that God of War would move on
12:43from the tales of Greek myth,
12:45Kratos moved into the world of Norse.
12:47However, this wasn't an immediate decision.
12:51According to director Corey Barlog,
12:53others that were in the running were
12:54Egyptian,
12:55Inca,
12:56and Hindu.
12:57This was narrowed down to Norse and Egyptian,
13:00and the latter was considered long enough
13:02for concept art to be created,
13:04featuring Kratos and Atreus in combat,
13:07and a sphinx spreading its wings in the background.
13:10References to Egypt can be found
13:12in both the 2018 game and Ragnarok.
13:15There's no doubt many players would love
13:16to see the series head there next,
13:18which actually falls in line
13:20with recent leaks.
13:29Pain homage.
13:31Call it my thirteenth and final labor.
13:34Soon I will become the God of War
13:36and claim the throne for myself.
13:39Plenty of well-known actors
13:41have lent their voices to God of War characters,
13:43such as Clancy Brown as Hades
13:45and Michael Clarke Duncan as Atlas.
13:48But there are a couple who have actually reprised roles
13:50that made them famous.
13:52Harry Hamlin,
13:52who voiced Perseus in God of War 2,
13:54previously played the hero in the 1981 classic,
13:58Clash of the Titans.
14:04Kevin Sorbo, best known for portraying Hercules
14:07on the TV show of the same name
14:09and several TV movies,
14:10also voiced him in God of War 3,
14:12as well as God of War Ascension.
14:14Although, their video game counterparts
14:16ended up much worse off
14:18than the live-action ones.
14:26Like Father, Like Son
14:28The weird thing about Norse mythology
14:30is it has so many different translations,
14:33so many different interpretations
14:34that it's this very tangled web
14:36when you start researching it
14:37and trying to understand.
14:38If you follow the God of War series,
14:40Cory Barlog is a name
14:42you've likely heard many times.
14:43He's worked on the series
14:45since the very beginning.
14:46He directed both God of War 2
14:48and the 2018 Norse entry,
14:50but he's also written
14:51for several other installments.
14:53Like everything all connects to it.
14:55Brock and Sindri
14:56have a complicated family relationship
14:58that you affect, that you change.
15:01As it turns out,
15:03the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
15:04His father, James Barlog,
15:06is an accomplished young adult author
15:08best known for the Minnow series.
15:10And he also helped write his son's
15:12video game directorial debut.
15:14It's a good thing their relationship
15:16is much more positive
15:17than Zeus and Kratos.
15:19It did not have to be this way, my son.
15:23This path is of your choosing.
15:26The Three Wise Men
15:28God of War 3
15:37God of War 3
15:39could have been very different
15:40if creator David Jaffe
15:42hadn't left in 2007
15:43to form his own studio.
15:45He's spoken about his plans
15:47for the Greek finale.
15:48And by the sounds of it,
15:49it would have ended the series completely.
15:52Originally,
15:53the studio was playing around
15:54with the idea of having
15:55Kratos kill Zeus
15:56very early in the game.
16:06From there,
16:07Norse and Egyptian gods
16:08would have invaded,
16:10causing war
16:10between the three pantheons.
16:12All gods and goddesses
16:14would have perished,
16:15but Kratos and his counterparts
16:16from the Norse and Egyptian realms
16:18would have become
16:19the Three Wise Men,
16:21beginning the belief
16:22of one true god
16:23from Christianity.
16:24There's even a mural
16:25hinting at this
16:26in God of War 2.
16:28My vengeance
16:31ends now.
16:33A Forgotten Daughter
16:35God of War
16:36Ascension
16:36Get in the boat, boy.
16:44Atreus was a great addition
16:46to the series,
16:47challenging Kratos as a parent
16:48while lending some
16:49much-appreciated aid
16:50in fights.
16:51But Kratos was almost
16:53given another child.
16:54In celebration of the studio's
16:5620th anniversary in 2019,
16:58Sony Santa Monica released
16:59a ton of unseen concept art
17:02spanning the series.
17:03How incredibly disappointing!
17:07Some of it was for Kratos'
17:09secret and playable daughter,
17:10even bearing a similar face tattoo,
17:12who would have gone looking for him
17:14following God of War 3.
17:15However,
17:16when the next game in the series
17:18turned out to be a prequel,
17:19the art was repurposed
17:20for the Amazon warrior enemies
17:22of Ascension.
17:29Fairy Companion
17:30God of War
17:39Series creator David Jaffe
17:41has revealed several elements
17:43changed between the planning stages
17:45and release of the first game.
17:46And of all of them,
17:48we wish this one
17:49could have been included the most.
17:50Jaffe originally wanted Kratos
17:52to have a fairy companion
17:54similar to Navi
17:55in Ocarina of Time.
17:56But in a hilarious twist,
17:58Kratos would have gotten annoyed
18:00with his little helper
18:01and killed it before the end
18:02of the first level.
18:04Hello!
18:06Given Navi's fame
18:07for being an annoyance,
18:09we can definitely understand
18:10his thought process here.
18:12Unfortunately,
18:13the idea was scrapped
18:14because the team
18:15just didn't have the time
18:16to set it up.
18:22Sources of Inspiration
18:24God of War
18:33With its immense popularity,
18:36God of War ended up
18:36inspiring a lot of copycats.
18:39But the game itself
18:40was a blend of ideas
18:41inspired by other games.
18:43Jaffe was impressed
18:44by Capcom's Onimusha
18:46and wanted to do something similar,
18:48just with Greek mythology
18:49instead of Japanese.
18:51Another Capcom hit,
18:52Devil May Cry,
18:53influenced the game's
18:54hack-and-slash action.
18:56For its camera
18:57and puzzle solving,
18:58the development team
18:59looked to the action-adventure
19:00classic, Ico.
19:02Finally,
19:02for inspiration on adapting
19:04well-known characters
19:05with their own twist,
19:06they took a page
19:07out of American McGee's book
19:09and his adaptation
19:10of Alice's Adventures
19:11in Wonderland.
19:12Who am I?
19:15Off with her head.
19:22Almost First Person
19:33Clearly,
19:33the first game
19:34could have wound up
19:35being very different.
19:37Sony Santa Monica
19:38looked to several popular games
19:39for what wound up
19:40being the melting pot
19:42that is God of War.
19:43But before that,
19:44creator and director
19:45David Jaffe showed interest
19:47in making the game
19:48first person.
19:49He spoke about this interest
19:50on his YouTube channel,
19:52citing a Dreamcast game
19:53called Machen X.
20:01It certainly would have
20:02made the game stand out
20:03against other action games,
20:04but Jaffe ultimately felt
20:06like the view
20:06wouldn't capture the emotion,
20:08character building,
20:09and combat
20:09he wanted from the game.
20:11With Kratos' emotion
20:12and brutal combat
20:13being some of the most
20:14important facets
20:15of the series,
20:16this was definitely
20:17the right call.
20:30What's a fun fact
20:31you love about
20:32the God of War series?
20:33Share it with us
20:34in the comments.
20:38Don't take all day.
20:41Thanks for watching.
20:42If you enjoyed the video,
20:43there's more
20:44where that came from.
