00:00You monster! Be quiet! I am sorry, my lord. The boy is young and foolish. He does not know what he says.
00:07Man said so!
00:09How do you ask another bitch ass?
00:10Welcome, everyone, to the new series I will be starting on my channel.
00:15Samurai Jack, which will be replacing Hero Inside since I just finished that series.
00:20There should be an iCard somewhere around here so you can check it out.
00:24So, Samurai Jack is a beloved series that I am sure many kids who watched Cartoon Network in the 2000s remember.
00:32It is a series that I watch with my father a lot, and I would say it's one of the series that had a large impact in who I am today.
00:41But I will get more into my own personal feelings about this series near the end of the video,
00:47as well as how I will be going about reviewing the series.
00:50A note before we begin, I will probably have to edit the clips I use, so if you want to see it unedited,
00:57go check out some of my other sites I upload on with not as harsh copyright guidelines.
01:03I will have my link tree in the description so you can check them out there.
01:08We will be doing the first three episodes since it's one long continuous storyline,
01:13and as a kid I had the DVD that advertised it as a movie.
01:17But, now, I hope you all enjoy my review, and make sure to like and subscribe if you want to go on this nostalgic journey with me.
01:25Now, let's get into it.
01:27We have a silent opening of the sun being eclipsed, and it causes this lone dark tree in this wasteland to awaken.
01:35With this being now released, we just ominously zoom in and pan to its face with the first words we hear in this series.
01:44He says that he is now again free to terrorize the world, as he once did years ago.
01:51And we then transition into Jack's father telling him about the legend of Aku,
01:56that he had fought him years ago with a magical blade and eventually sealed him away.
02:01And once that evil was conquered, as emperor, he rebuilt the land, and there has been peace ever since.
02:08Now, we do get a two-part episode actually showing all of this in the future,
02:13and it's one of my favorite episodes of this series, but we will get into that eventually.
02:19As Jack is playing in the palace, Aku arrives, with the army trying to fight him off,
02:24but he just absorbs everything they throw at him and throws it back at them.
02:29His father tries to go after his magical sword, but Aku stops him.
02:34But he tells Jack's mother to enact their operation that they have been planning for years in advance.
02:41And she locks in, taking the sword and escaping with Jack, giving him over to some sailors to take care of him,
02:48while she has to go into hiding from Aku.
02:51And thus begins his multiple decades-long journey to become a warrior that will be capable of wielding the sword that will destroy Aku.
03:01He learns how to read constellations from the sailors who drop him off in India,
03:06where he learned how to ride a horse and rode to what seems like an African tribe to learn how to fight with a staff.
03:14Once he was done learning that, they traveled to Egypt so he can become educated by them,
03:19most likely learning many things from them, and seem to have stayed there for the longest time so far.
03:26Since the next time we see him, he went from an 8 to 10 year old to a young teenager in Rome,
03:33I think learning how to wrestle.
03:34Then we see him as a mid to late teenager, learning from what seems like goddamn Robin Hood,
03:41who teaches him about archery.
03:42Next was him learning even more about sailing from Vikings,
03:47and then he went to I think what is Russia to practice axe throwing,
03:51and then learned horse combat from what seems like the Mongolians.
03:56And then his penultimate stop was to a monastery to further train his combat skills in hand-to-hand and with weaponry,
04:04with his final stop being to finally obtain the sword he was destined to wield.
04:09We get a touching scene of him being reunited with his mother after all this time,
04:14and her revealing the sword and Jack's iconic robes.
04:18We see him practice with it for a bit, but then he sets off to free his people.
04:24We cut to what has become of them, and they became slaves,
04:28mining crystals and building monuments to Aku,
04:31with Jack's father turning one of them,
04:34with the minions keeping him on the edge of working him to death.
04:38Jack comes in defeating all of the minions,
04:41with his father being in disbelief that his son has returned.
04:45His father explains what has happened to them,
04:47with Jack proclaiming that with the sword he will vanquress Aku.
04:52But his father tells him not to put all his faith into the sword,
04:56because evil can be deceptive, and it will often find a way to survive.
05:02Jack then travels to Aku's lair and comes face to face with him.
05:05Of course, Aku laughs at him until Jack, to his surprise, actually damages him.
05:12My people, for my father, for my birthright.
05:18Ayo, what the fuck?
05:20They begin their fight, and at least, I think, it still holds up today.
05:25With my favorite transformation Aku takes being his octopus form,
05:30because it just looks creepy with how they animated it,
05:33and the music accompanying it.
05:35But Jack eventually seals Aku within the sword,
05:39and releases him to finally kill him.
05:41But Aku was able to trick him,
05:44and opens up a portal,
05:45flinging him thousands of years into the future,
05:48and thus ending the first episode.
05:51Bye-bye!
05:52See you later!
05:53So, let's get the characters out of the way first.
05:56The Emperor, Jack's father, was voiced by Sab Shemino,
06:00who also voiced Uncle from Jackie Chan Adventures,
06:04and Monk Yatso and Master Yu from Avatar The Last Airbender.
06:09I didn't even realize that he voiced all of them,
06:11so that was a cool thing to find out.
06:13With the Emperor, we see throughout this episode
06:16that he seemed to be a great warrior and leader,
06:19sealing Aku, and just in case he ever came back,
06:23made a plan with his wife to ensure
06:25that the safety of their son was assured,
06:28and to make sure he would become a great warrior,
06:31being trained all over the world from different cultures.
06:34And even when he finally did see his son again,
06:37he was not afraid to scold him,
06:39basically saying to be self-reliant,
06:42and to just see the sword as a tool to guide him to his destiny.
06:47I will, of course, have more things to say about him in the future episodes.
06:52Now, let's move over to Aku.
06:54He is voiced by the late, great Mako,
06:57with his full name being Makoto Iwamatsu,
07:01and he was also the voice actor for Iroh in Avatar.
07:04Aku was one of my favorite childhood villains when I was growing up.
07:09His character design is pretty simple,
07:11but very striking when someone sees it,
07:15with his appearance being based off of Oni from Japanese folklore.
07:19And thanks to his simple design,
07:22they can easily animate him shape-shifting into all different kinds of forms.
07:27And let's not forget that his name literally means evil in Japanese.
07:32And that's basically his character for this episode,
07:35he just wants to dominate and torture all beings in the world from what we see.
07:40With the only thing that can hurt him being the magical sword forged from righteousness,
07:46that is his complete opposite.
07:48He gets more character as the series goes on,
07:50but that's all I will say about him for now.
07:54Then we come to the star of the show,
07:57Samurai Jack,
07:58who is voiced by the legendary Phil Lamar,
08:01who has voiced Hermes from Futurama,
08:04Static from Static Shock,
08:06Jon Stewart from Justice League,
08:09and Baxter Stockman from the 2012 Ninja Turtles.
08:13And as a kid,
08:14it blew my mind that a black guy voiced Samurai Jack,
08:17because my kid brain thought since he was Asian,
08:20he was voiced by an Asian guy.
08:22And he gave Jack such an iconic voice.
08:25Which is one of the many reasons I believe that voice actors
08:30don't have to be the same race they are playing,
08:32and should just be whoever the director thinks has the right voice for the job.
08:38If that kind of casting was implemented back then,
08:41we wouldn't have the fantastic voice of Jack.
08:45Now getting into his character,
08:47Jack really did have a difficult childhood,
08:50with Aku just busting in,
08:53destroying everything he knew up to that point,
08:56and having to separate from his parents.
08:58But he did end up having one hell of an education.
09:01Learning from different masters from all over the globe,
09:05and from many different cultures.
09:07As a child,
09:08because I think I was like 4 or 5 when I first watched the show,
09:12this was my first introduction to a lot of these cultures.
09:16And I love that during his journey,
09:18the music changed to reflect the culture he was in.
09:21But after he was finally done with all that,
09:23he got his classic design with his white robe and sword.
09:27Again,
09:28this design is simple and striking.
09:31But we saw after finally defeating Aku,
09:34he took time to gloat,
09:36when he should have just said nothing and just ended it.
09:39Causing him to fail in his mission,
09:41and to truly start his journey through the series.
09:45And now I have pretty much talked about everything I need to,
09:48so let's move on to the next episode.
09:50So let's move on to the next episode.
09:51So let's move on to the next episode.
09:51So let's move on to the next episode.
09:52So let's move on to the next episode.
09:53So let's move on to the next episode.
09:54So let's move on to the next episode.
09:55So let's move on to the next episode.
09:56So let's move on to the next episode.
