00:00That's the cutest fucking thing I've ever seen in my entire life.
00:16Welcome everyone to the new series I will be introducing you to on the channel.
00:21I won't be going too into it now, but I've been reading this series for a bit and I really
00:28like it.
00:28And I will be talking about the creator and its influences after the chapter review, so let's get into it.
00:36We begin with our main character, Julian.
00:40I like to move it, move it.
00:42No, not that Julian, attacking his slave owner with his inner monologue talking about how, as a slave, he has
00:50never had anything of value in his life.
00:54And as a slave, he was violently controlled along with being stripped of his humanity.
01:00We cut over to a slaver ship that plans to go through some kind of cursed territory that is said
01:06to contain a beast and that it hungers for sacrifices,
01:11but the captain simply says it's the best route for their needs.
01:15Julian is then found on the ship as a stowaway with the captain just wanting to kill him, but the
01:21other slaves protest.
01:22With a pregnant woman calling out that she will share her rations with him so their total food supply won't
01:29affect anyone but the slaves.
01:31With the others, of course, offering up their shares of food, because they're not gonna let a pregnant woman go
01:39hungry and welcome him aboard.
01:41Once they get to the slave quarters, they ask him why he snuck onto the ship, and he tells them
01:46that he heard he could get a job on the continent they are traveling to, and plans to buy himself
01:53out of slavery.
01:55He asks her why she would cover for him, and she simply says that human decency is hard to come
02:02by when you're a slave.
02:03And it's her pride as a human to help others when needed.
02:07She then shows him a blade her husband gifted her, but it's rusted over, so to repay his debt, he
02:15wants to restore it for her.
02:16They asked where he learned to do that kind of thing, and he tells them that his mother sold him
02:23off when he was young to a blacksmith.
02:24And when he would make mistakes or fail his chores, his owner would punish him by burning him with heated
02:32rods.
02:32So when he couldn't take it anymore, he attacked him and ran off, which we saw in the first page
02:38of the chapter.
02:40And what this woman and the rest of the slaves did for him was the first time anyone has treated
02:46him that way, so it's difficult for him to understand it.
02:50She then asks him his name, and she introduces herself as Mira.
02:56Later on that night, he asks when the baby will be born, and she says that it may be born
03:02before they reach their destination.
03:04With her, of course, hoping that the baby will be born safely, and that they can live a happy life.
03:10And Julian starts to anguish in the thought that there are mothers like Mira in the world, when his mother
03:18seemed to never truly love him.
03:20Mira pulls him in for a hug, telling him even though he has had a rough life, she asks him
03:26to never forget that there is still love and kindness in the world.
03:31The next day, they put the slaves to work, or they don't eat.
03:34So, Julian asks if he can do Mira's work since she is pregnant, which he gets hit for, but he
03:42still insists on doing so.
03:44Later that night, Julian tells her that she is amazing for carrying her child, but Mira says that she doesn't
03:50feel like she deserves his praise.
03:53She had a son that tried to protect her, and in doing so, got himself killed.
03:59And she blames herself for not being able to protect her child.
04:03And even if she feels that she failed him, her main goal in her life now is that her current
04:09child is born safely,
04:11even if she has her doubts that they could be happy in the type of world they will be born
04:18into.
04:19Julian, hearing this, reassures her that a parent is a child's whole world,
04:24and a mother who loves their child as much as she does will surely find happiness in their life.
04:30With him, then, hugging her like she did to him.
04:34That's the cutest fucking thing I've ever seen in my entire life.
04:50We cut to the next morning, with him doing more work, thinking about the connection between Mira and her child,
04:57hoping that he can have a connection like that at some point in his life,
05:01and that it scares him that that may never happen.
05:05Once night falls, they both get a nice view of the stars,
05:09with Mira telling him that if they both are somehow freed one day,
05:14that she would love for him to live with her and her child.
05:18Which, of course, makes Julian happy, but he tries to hide it.
05:21They run into some rough waters, and the captain is pretty sure he was on the correct route,
05:27but waves it off because they are far enough out to see where he can enact his plan.
05:33So he calls all of the slaves above deck, and he begins to kill them,
05:39saying he sees all of them as defective goods and that he will most likely get more money from the
05:45insurance he has on them,
05:47and would rather cash in that than try selling all of them.
05:52So, of course, all the slaves panic as him and his crew start slaughtering all of them,
05:57with the last to alive being Julian and Mira,
06:01since all of the slaves wanted to protect a pregnant woman and a child.
06:04And as he gives the orders to finish them, we see something emerge from the sea.
06:09A mass of tentacles forms itself into a semi-humanoid form,
06:14and asks if they seek her blessing.
06:17And the conditions for doing so are that they sacrifice a large number of lives to her,
06:23and if they sacrifice a pure love along with it.
06:26So she then asks, out of Mira and Julian, who will be the one to die.
06:31They, of course, ask what she is, and she dismisses them, saying that it doesn't matter.
06:37The only thing they need to know is that she will grant power to whoever is left.
06:43Julian, of course, now knowing the feeling of love from Mira,
06:49chooses to offer himself up so she and her child can survive.
06:53But Mira, seeing this, flashes back to her son,
06:57and tells Julian she will not let this happen again to one of her children.
07:01So she uses her husband's blade to cut herself open,
07:06ripping her daughter out to give to Julian.
07:09She names her Diana, tells them that she loves them, and falls into the sea.
07:15The being then asks him to state his wish.
07:18So he asks her to show him that the lives of the slaves in Mira weren't a waste.
07:25So she bathes him in an inky-like substance,
07:29blessing him and allowing the slaver and his crew to move again.
07:34As Julian knocks out the captain, the being states that since she was given a hundred souls,
07:41she gave Julian all of the base attributes of those slaves,
07:45being their power, speed, endurance, reflexes, and so on.
07:50He then proceeds to just eradicate the crew with seemingly no problems.
07:55He finally relaxes, but the captain was still alive and stabs him in the neck,
08:00but the being explains that he has also been blessed with a hundred lives as well.
08:06The captain realizes he is screwed and begs for his life,
08:10but Julian just simply kills him and gets himself and Diana off the boat,
08:15with the ship then getting destroyed by tentacles and pulled into the sea.
08:20With the being then telling him that the sea will no longer be a threat to him and the child,
08:26and she will put the boat on a course so they will reach land in a day.
08:30It bids him farewell, while Julian holds Diana,
08:34telling himself he has never had anything of true value in his life until now,
08:40as the sun rises on the birth of Diana and the rebirth of Julian.
08:45With the last panel being of a cracking symbol on Diana,
08:50showing she was blessed just like Julian was.
08:53So, first things first, before I get onto the characters,
08:57I want to talk about the mangaka himself.
08:59His name is Toru Kuramori, and he has been an assistant to Tatsuki Fujimoto,
09:06the author of Chainsaw Man,
09:08and Yukinobu Tatsu, working on a few chapters of Dandadon.
09:14Centuria was his first major work that got picked up,
09:18with the rest of his library being one-shots going back to 2019.
09:23And I just have to say, he's doing pretty well for his first series,
09:28since as the time of writing, he has 92 chapters out so far.
09:32And it has been hovering around the top 10 manga on Manga Plus,
09:37so it probably is not going to end anytime soon.
09:41But that's enough of talking about the real world aspects of the series,
09:46I'll get onto the characters now.
09:49There's really only two to talk about,
09:51and the first one I want to talk about is Mira.
09:55She is honestly too good for this world,
09:59with how she showed so much kindness to Julian and the others around her.
10:04And then, she, like any parent, just wants her baby to grow up to be happy
10:09on the new continent they are sailing to,
10:12being okay with her own suffering because she feels guilty for her son dying,
10:18trying to protect her and his unborn sister.
10:21So, seeing a boy around the same age made her not want to relive that pain,
10:27so she did her best in arguing to keep him alive,
10:31spurring the rest of the slaves to do the same.
10:34She is definitely a warm light in the dark situation they are all in.
10:39But then, of course, comes the tragedy of the story,
10:43with the slavers deciding to kill off all of the slaves
10:46to get the insurance on all of them,
10:49which is just messed up.
10:51And I am sure things like this probably happened in history.
10:56With all the slaves protecting her and Julian,
10:59and the sea goddess is what I'm going to be calling her,
11:03now giving them a choice in what to do.
11:06She even has the resolve to cut open her own stomach and ripping out the baby
11:12to make sure the baby doesn't get sacrificed along with her,
11:16entrusting Julian with her daughter's safety and willingly sacrificing herself.
11:21There are, of course, questions about her background,
11:24like who her husband was,
11:26because he seemed to give her a very ornate and expensive looking blade,
11:31if you ask me.
11:33And I would have thought he would have been a slave as well,
11:37so how could he get a blade like that?
11:40Questions that I am sure will be answered at some point.
11:43Then we must move over to the main character,
11:47Julian,
11:48who has definitely not had the best life up to this point.
11:52He was born to a single mother and then sold off to a blacksmith for a handful of coin
11:57when he was younger than he is now.
12:00And during those years of slavery,
12:02he did chores and picked up on a few skills dealing with blacksmithing.
12:07But of course, the man was abusive,
12:10burning him with metal rods when he made even small mistakes,
12:14explaining all of the scars on his arms.
12:16With us then seeing in the opening pages,
12:19he finally fought back against him when he thought he was going to finally kill him
12:24and escaped onto the slave boat,
12:26where he was lucky that the other slaves stood up for him
12:30because he would have died right then and there.
12:33And it seems on this slave ship is the first time he can really talk and connect with others
12:39that don't have some type of power over him.
12:42Like the slave that gave an older slave bread
12:45and refused Julian sharing it with him because he was a kid.
12:50Then of course, his main bond he had was with Mira,
12:54who showed him a kindness he could never have imagined.
12:58Letting him see how a mother should act towards her children
13:01and just seeing and feeling a small amount of that bond
13:05opened up new possibilities he never imagined for himself.
13:09Hoping and wishing he could eventually have something like that in his lifetime.
13:14Then just piling on the happiness he felt
13:17when Mira told him that she would like him to live with them
13:21when they reach the new continent,
13:24making him feel like he finally was going to have a family.
13:28Which to his horror was cut short when the slaves were slaughtered.
13:33And once the sea goddess gave them her deal,
13:37he chose to give up his life to save and preserve her and her baby's life.
13:43With this kid only being in his early teens, I'm guessing.
13:47But as we go along,
13:49Mira sacrifices herself entrusting her daughter Diana to him.
13:53With Julian gaining his powers and not hesitating to kill the entire crew
13:59along with the captain after taking one of his 101 lives.
14:04He is now off to the new continent with his new purpose in life being the guardian of Diana.
14:09Which I am excited to see what will happen with them.
14:13Before I get to the outro,
14:15I am going to talk about a few of the inspirations of the manga.
14:19With one of them being an oil painting called The Slave Ship,
14:23which is obvious why it connects to this story.
14:27I would say its main inspiration is Kentaro Miura's Berserk,
14:31which is my personal favorite manga of all time.
14:34And I just did a review on his first one-shot,
14:37Fututabi,
14:38for my 500 subscriber milestone,
14:41if you want to check it out.
14:42The next inspiration is the Lovecraftian mythos,
14:46which is pretty obvious when we see the sea goddess,
14:49and I have personally been interested in the genre for years now,
14:53since I like the concept of things that are beyond our understanding.
14:57The next series that he took inspiration from
15:01was Vinland Saga,
15:02which is another great series you should check out when you get the chance.
15:07With the time period being around the same time for both series,
15:11and of course with both of them having a more Western European design to them.
15:17With the last one of my knowledge being a bit of Hunter x Hunter,
15:21which will relate to the battle slash fights in the series,
15:26but we will see those a little later into it.
15:30So I hope you guys are excited to see what will happen next as well,
15:34since this will be a new series that will be replacing Versus on the channel.
15:39And don't worry any Versus fans,
15:42I will still upload one video on the series once a month, probably.
15:47If you guys have any questions, don't hesitate to ask them down below.
15:51And before I forget, make sure to like the video and subscribe to the channel
15:55to catch when I upload my next Centurion review.
16:00And if you're curious, check out my other series I have done so far on the channel.
16:05You might be interested in some of them.
16:07With all my shilling done, I hope to see you guys next time.
16:12Bye guys!
