00:01With more than 15 million restaurants in the world,
00:04from uber-casual to who's paying for this,
00:07there's an unforgettable dining experience
00:10to satisfy your every craving.
00:12But sometimes, you have to dig deep, go far,
00:16and even get weird for a truly unique food experience.
00:20As a globetrotting comedian, I've
00:22had some mind-blowing meals in one-of-a-kind places.
00:25But there's so many more dining adventures out there.
00:29Feed my plus one, as we explore 1,000 ways to dine.
00:35The best restaurant service is sometimes the most unusual.
00:40Chicken delivered on the fly, sandwiches going off the rails,
00:45and a waitstaff with a bone to pick,
00:48and not just with the wings.
00:50How are you?
00:51Don't answer, I don't give a .
00:54We've got the best tips on restaurants
00:56with the world's most unusual service.
00:59Today, on 1,000 Ways to Dive.
01:05That's an alien brain.
01:12I'm Michael Yeo, and I will be your host for the evening.
01:16Today's specials are revolutionary restaurants
01:18that have invented radical new ways to get the food from the kitchen
01:23to your table.
01:27First up, we're heading to Nantaburi, Thailand, just north of Bangkok
01:31and east of, where are we?
01:36These outskirts don't typically see much tourist action.
01:39But thanks to the unusual service at Flying Chicken restaurant,
01:43there's a poultry party every day.
01:46And when a place is called Flying Chicken,
01:48you better take that very literally.
01:51Oh, yeah, that's pretty fly.
01:55That kind of service is definitely worth a huge clucking tip.
01:59Whose ingenious idea was this anyway?
02:02The owner gave us the chicken coop scoop.
02:06His family thought the restaurant needed a gimmick to set them apart
02:09from other restaurants that serve similar Chinese and Thai food.
02:13And the one-of-a-kind Flying Chicken Show was born.
02:18He also gave us a sneak peek into how the chicken is dressed
02:21before it flies in the sky.
02:23After all, every stunt chicken needs to be prepared before showtime.
02:28The chicken is marinated in a secret mixture
02:31of Chinese herbs and spices.
02:34Then it is fried to perfection, making it moist and flavorful
02:38while maintaining the perfect amount of crispy deliciousness.
02:42One fry and fly combo.
02:44Order up!
02:48The clang of the bell ushers customers outside
02:50and signals that it's showtime.
02:52I mean, dinnertime.
02:54I mean, both.
02:58Oh, I forgot to mention, the waiter catching the chicken.
03:01He's riding a unicycle.
03:03Whoa!
03:06This, he can catch it.
03:13Oh!
03:20And the crowd goes wild.
03:22Oh, wow.
03:22That's excellent.
03:24Can we see that again in slo mo?
03:26Somebody, roll the cluck cam.
03:30Watch carefully as the chickens loaded into the catapult,
03:35then launched at least 20 feet in the air.
03:40Have you ever seen a featherless bird fly so gracefully?
03:45He catches it on the plate with only one bounce.
03:49Nice form.
03:51I give that a 10 out of 10.
03:55What I want to know is, what happens if the waiter drops the chicken?
04:07Practice is a must, because guess what, my fine-feathered friends?
04:12This time, he's going to catch it on his helmet with a spike.
04:15Talk about chicks gone wild.
04:17And he sticks the landing.
04:27This guy could be on Thailand's Got Talent.
04:31And after waiters have played with the poultry,
04:33it's time to finally chow down on the chicken.
04:36So good.
04:39And everyone knows that fried chicken needs some sides,
04:42but plain old mashed potatoes and mac and cheese?
04:45They don't fly here, thankfully.
04:47Dig into some traditional Thai faves like Tam Yong Kun,
04:51a sour and spicy soup made out of prawns with lemongrass, chili paste,
04:56and fish sauce.
04:58Or how about some spicy santul salad,
05:01made with the native fruit of the same name,
05:03that only grows in Southeast Asia.
05:06Its milky and sweet flavor, with floral notes and hints of tart citrus,
05:11perfectly complements the dried coconut, chili, and nuts.
05:15You'd be nuts not to try it.
05:19Chickens in the air, on unicycles, and on helmets with a spike?
05:23That red and white bucket is looking pretty boring after all this.
05:27And if you don't tip that waiter big bucks, that's just foul.
05:31Speaking of foul behavior,
05:36the service at this next devious diner in Sydney, Australia,
05:40serves up comfort food in a very uncomfortable setting.
05:44All right, we've got the milkshake.
05:45Karen's diner is an homage to America's most annoying pop culture meme.
05:50Karen's her name, and complaining is her game.
05:53You're late, or if you had been a director, you wouldn't be late.
05:57Maybe if you weren't an idiot, you could find a restaurant.
06:01This diner really dishes out the digs, even with the decor,
06:08blending retro designs with framed photos and images
06:12of the classic Karen hairstyle.
06:14Hi, welcome to Karen's.
06:18My name's Chris. I'll be your Karen. How are you?
06:20Don't answer. I don't give a .
06:21Okay, then.
06:23Here, good manners and children are treated the same.
06:27They're both ignored.
06:28You really thought it was a good idea to bring the kids?
06:31At Karen's, the customer is always wrong.
06:35Yes, it's all in fun, but if a guest crosses the line,
06:39they get the boat.
06:41Those are the rules.
06:42What do you want?
06:43Karen's isn't just a place to be insulted.
06:46They have seriously delicious comfort food, gourmet burgers,
06:50wicked wings, and frosty shakes that are as icy as the waitstaff.
06:56Oh, my God, this is hard!
07:00Nobody is getting mad at the chicken bingo wings.
07:03These deep-fried crispy morsels are tossed with a sweet and spicy honey barbecue sauce.
07:08And for the truly sharp-tongued Karen, a set-your-mouth-on-fire buffalo sauce.
07:15Take it.
07:16Eat it, shut up, yeah?
07:18At Karen's, the real center of attention are the burgers.
07:23Their signature is named after Karen's favorite famous phrase.
07:27I want to see the manager.
07:29Made with two Wagyu beef patties, melted Swiss, crispy bacon,
07:34and a house-made barbecue mustard sauce.
07:37After eating this, you will want to speak to the manager
07:40to tell them how good the burger is.
07:42Basic Karen.
07:44Basic Karen, because you're a basic , right?
07:46Yeah, sure.
07:47Yeah, I can see that.
07:48Sassy retorts and burgers so good, you'll have nothing to complain about, but still will.
07:54And that makes the unusual service at Karen's Diner worth putting up with.
07:59I'm done with you.
08:01Don't see you later.
08:07From Australia to Austria, they're not the same place.
08:11Yes, I checked.
08:12The tales of unusual service at Roller Coaster Restaurant are pickin' up speed.
08:21A Vienna-Austria hotspot serving up classic American fare with anything but classic service.
08:27Your dinner arrives right in front of you by way of this intricate indoor roller coaster,
08:33making this unusual service something to scream about.
08:38Welcome at Roller Coaster Restaurant.
08:41Roller Coaster Restaurant is located at the edge of Vienna's Pratau, an over 250-year-old amusement park.
08:48The restaurant feeds and entertains adults and kids alike with its high-speed Octavon.
08:53That's German for Roller Coaster.
08:55They put a super-fun spin on fast service, taking it to new highs and lows.
09:01This fully mechanized approach to service starts from the second you walk in the door.
09:10You can skip the server small talk in favor of a fully digital ordering experience.
09:15Once you punch in your order, you're off on an emotional roller coaster.
09:20Never mind, that's just me.
09:22Back in the kitchen, chefs get to work on prepping food that not only tastes amazing,
09:26but travels well.
09:28Sealed in packaging that keeps everything hot and fresh,
09:31and from pouring all over you as it whooshes above your head.
09:35The menu has a build-your-own-salad option, but leave the tossing up to the roller coaster.
09:42The twists and turns even help mix in the dressing.
09:48Two giant yellow robot claws pick up your order and put it on the fast track to your belly,
09:53dropping each dish onto a network of small roller coasters that run the span of the restaurant.
10:00These robotic arms don't just drop off food and drinks.
10:03They drop it like it's hot with the choreographed dance number.
10:07Amusement park food favorites keep the crowds coming back,
10:14like this tangy, slow-cooked pulled pork sandwich,
10:18which gets a swirl of sauce on the bun before it swirls down the track to you.
10:23And for the picky little eaters, simple servings of pasta,
10:28or an authentic German Frankfurter with fries that are French.
10:32Plus, any food that comes to kids on a coaster already makes it taste better.
10:37Adults and kids alike love the way that Vienna's roller coaster restaurant
10:42has turned unusual service on its head.
10:45This is the only place where a roller coaster bringing up your meal is truly a good thing.
10:58We've witnessed food roller coasters assisted by mechanics,
11:01but artificial intelligence is taking over the world.
11:05I mean, taking over this restaurant service.
11:09We're headed to Beaverton, Oregon to visit a restaurant called Top Burmese.
11:13This is the place for Southeast Asian cuisine,
11:17and has a modern and unusual service to poop.
11:20Or should I say, beep, boop.
11:22Looks like Wall-E has joined the waitstaff.
11:25An ultra modern take on unusual service.
11:35They blend the traditional time-honored spices of Asia and India with, wait for it, robots.
11:43Welcome.
11:44Here, robots serve as mechanical sidekicks to the human waitstaff,
11:48and are tasked with everything from meeting and greeting customers to bussing and waiting on tables.
11:56Most people are pleasantly surprised by them.
11:58Everybody loves them.
11:59You'll hear lots of squeals and laughs, and everybody gets their phone out to film them.
12:02It's so cool.
12:04They're really cute, but they're also super helpful.
12:11Milo was our very first robot.
12:13Milo actually stands in front of the store.
12:16That's Milo's work.
12:17That's a greeter.
12:19And a lot of our followers on social media, they know who Milo is.
12:22So they come in here, and Milo sometimes smiles.
12:28The food running robots use ceiling markers and motion detection cameras
12:32to bring the food to different tables and deliver takeout orders to drivers.
12:36Wait, they go outside?
12:38The robots are a part of our ecosystem now.
12:40It's a permanent fixture.
12:42So they have gone from either this sort of novelty
12:45to more of a practical tool that we use.
12:54While you're waiting for the stray bot in the lot to kick off the apocalypse,
12:57you might as well have a bite.
12:59No, bite with an eye.
13:02It's already starting.
13:03One of the things that I really like personally is sort of combining,
13:06you know, two things on a very opposite spectrum.
13:10You know, the Burmese food, the recipe, very sort of ancient, you know, very primitive.
13:15And then actually you have on the other end of it, the robots that bring it in.
13:19So combining it all together, it makes it a very unique experience in a sense.
13:24For fans of Asian cuisine like Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese,
13:29top Burmese takes it to the next level.
13:32Their way out menu is a must try.
13:36Burma is situated between India and China.
13:40So we actually have a lot of cultural influences from, you know, from these neighbors.
13:44When we actually think of what would be the perfect appetizer for our menu,
13:48samosas really sort of came first.
13:50Our original samosas, we call it Burmese gold samosas.
13:54It's a triangular shape.
13:55So what's in it is the potato, green beans, carrots, spices like musla,
14:00and it's all mushed together.
14:02So like a mashed potato.
14:04And then we fry that.
14:06In the mood for something tangy, tart, and super popular?
14:09Try the tea.
14:10And I'm not talking about a piece of juicy gossip.
14:14Tea leaf salad, it's very traditional.
14:16And so that's very, I would say, it's very uniquely Burmese.
14:19These top tea leaves are being picked and they're being fermented underground for about four to six weeks.
14:27And then they're ready for consumption. It's very unique.
14:31No soup and salad combo would be complete without the soup, obviously.
14:36The coconut noodle soup is made with coconut milk and curry together.
14:41So you cook the curry separately and then you have the fresh coconut all mixed together and turn that into a soup.
14:47Uh, it's very rich.
14:48Uh, it's very aromatic dish that traditionally you'll find it in Burma everywhere.
14:54The service at Tat Burmese is as unique and flawless as its food.
14:58They use zero artificial ingredients, just artificial intelligence.
15:03This unusual service is programmed for success.
15:13Our next unusual service endeavor takes us to Tokyo, Japan,
15:18for an upscale international tasting menu at Ninja Tokyo.
15:24So, what's so unusual?
15:26This one-of-a-kind interactive dining experience is controlled entirely by the cleverest and most feared
15:33Japanese warrior, the ninja.
15:36Dinner with ninjas? That's the coolest thing I've ever heard.
15:41These ninjas take their stealthy service seriously from the second you step through the door.
15:47Ninja Tokyo is a labyrinth of dark halls filled with waterfalls, swords, and tricky traps.
15:58These super-stealth warriors are full of surprises.
16:04Tokyo TV personalities and food lovers Shizuka Anderson and Lena Bambino
16:10have signed up to lead us on their secret mission.
16:18Guests must navigate the treacherous halls as their ninja guides them through tight spots,
16:23even up to a drawbridge designed to keep the enemy at bay.
16:27This is a trap for enemies.
16:30Oh!
16:31I will use ninja magic and fix the bridge.
16:35Ninkyotoshakaijin, let's do it!
16:38Zin!
16:39What?
16:42Wow!
16:43Ninjas that do magic? This service just keeps getting better and even more mysterious.
16:50When guests reach the ninja village, they're shown to one of 27 private hideouts to enjoy their meals.
16:57Wow, it's so beautiful.
17:00This place has attracted many famous celebs in search of solace.
17:04Bruno Mars came here. He was sitting in this room at this spot. Oh my gosh!
17:10Diners can choose to order a la carte or from one of five carefully selected menus
17:18that contain up to eight creative courses. But like the ninjas themselves...
17:23This is your next dish.
17:25Okay. Oh, whoa! Okay.
17:28Excuse me. Thank you.
17:31Most dishes are not what they seem.
17:34There is a sword in there.
17:37Right in there.
17:38What happened?
17:41Ah!
17:42You see?
17:43There's smoke coming out of it!
17:44Oh my gosh!
17:46Like the appetizer of cooked conger eel with parmesan cheese.
17:49Oh!
17:51That is soft.
17:52Yeah, it's fluffy.
17:53It's so hardcore, it comes complete with a cracker shaped as a ninja throwing star.
17:59Oh, shit!
18:00So good!
18:01Mmm!
18:02Next up is a turban shell or marine snail.
18:05A Japanese delicacy sure to ignite...
18:10...your appetite.
18:11Wow, what a way to cook your meal.
18:14I know.
18:15I feel like we're getting like surprised at every moment.
18:18The turban shell takes an Italian twist in a garlic butter broth and is meant to be mixed
18:24into this delicious dish of creamy lotus root gnocchi.
18:28Itadakimasu!
18:29Itadakimasu!
18:33Give the extra kick that I like.
18:36Lotus root, which doesn't have a lot of flavor.
18:37Mmm!
18:38And very light cream.
18:40So the flavor is easily changed.
18:41Mmm!
18:42Very fun way to eat it.
18:43Mmm!
18:44Mmm!
18:45A main course of Oh Me Wagyu beef...
18:48Holy cow!
18:51...is renowned for being one of the most delicious cuts of meat in the world.
18:57That's a lot of like flavor coming in.
18:59It really like takes over you.
19:02Mmm!
19:03This is what luxurious meat tastes like.
19:06Mm-hmm!
19:07Just when you think the ninja magic has ended,
19:10another secret door reveals a hidden gift shop where you can grab a few pics with your ninja.
19:21Wait, they do meet and greets?
19:23Oh, I want my picture with the ninja.
19:27That concludes our show on unusual service.
19:30I hope you enjoyed flying chickens delivered by unicycle.
19:34Karen's throwing shade and condiments.
19:36Salads being tossed on a roller coaster.
19:39Robots serving up soup and samosas.
19:41And being escorted to your table by a trained assassin.
19:45It was my pleasure taking care of you today.
19:47The tips are included, so don't need to leave anything.
19:50This one's on me.
19:51I'm Michael Yeo.
19:52We hope you'll join us again on 1,000 Ways to Dine.
