00:00With more than 15 million restaurants in the world, from uber-casual to who's paying for this, there's an unforgettable dining experience to satisfy your every craving.
00:12But sometimes you have to dig deep, go far, and even get weird for a truly unique food experience.
00:20As a globetrotting comedian, I've had some mind-blowing meals in one-of-a-kind places, but there's so many more dining adventures out there.
00:28Be my plus one, as we explore 1,000 ways to die.
00:34Sometimes for the best meals, you have to get lost to find them, and take the road less traveled for the most amazing food.
00:42Hit the highway for pie, steer down an Alabama back road for steak, but save room for a hot dog on a rusted-out bus.
00:51We're wheels-to-the-ground mining for hidden gems and getting lost in America on this episode of 1,000 Ways to Die.
01:03How much further till we get there?
01:08That's an alien brain.
01:10There's nothing like a road trip, so today we're going to eat our way across the U.S. of A.
01:22As we search for the most unique and off-the-beaten-path places to eat, we're taking the road less traveled,
01:28because that's really where you find the most incredible eats.
01:33Start your engines and grab a map and let's go.
01:36I call shotgun.
01:37First up, we're headed south to Sardis City, Alabama, to Steakhouse and Wild Game Restaurant, Bama Bucks.
01:50Adventurous eaters Nikki and John are behind the wheel, and they don't appear to need any directions.
01:56We're on our way now to Bama Bucks, which is supposed to be one of the best food places you can go to in the middle of nowhere America.
02:04We're super stoked for this.
02:07Hang a right.
02:08No, no, your other right.
02:10And when you see the giant steer out front, you'll know that you made it to Bama Bucks.
02:16That's because Bama Bucks is also a petting zoo and exotic animal park.
02:23Wildebees?
02:24Can we pet those?
02:25Oh, probably not.
02:27Oh, sweet baby, you're so little.
02:28So how did this place come to be?
02:31The story of Bama Bucks goes something like this.
02:35Owners Terry and Jennifer got one pet, then another, then another, then another.
02:40We started out raising white-tailed deer, and the obsession began.
02:45We've probably got 400 different animals here on the farm.
02:48These animals are living their best lives.
02:51Wait, these aren't on the menu, are they?
02:54I can't.
02:54I couldn't.
02:56We don't do any kind of slaughter.
02:58Oh, good.
02:59That's a relief, because right after this snuggle session with a lemur, Nikki and John will be
03:05ready to dig in.
03:06All right, everybody, let's go in.
03:08After a quick pit stop to wash off the animal fur, it's time to order the appetizers.
03:16Nikki and John couldn't decide which ones to get, so they ordered them all.
03:20We've got the fried pickles, the pimento balls, duck ones, and fried green tomatoes.
03:27Like a good box and sausage tree.
03:30Stuffed mushrooms and cowboy chips.
03:34Hold up.
03:35Those hit the table so fast, I'm going to need to see some of these all-star appetizers
03:39again.
03:40Like the cowboy chips.
03:43Sliced potatoes loaded with barbecue pork, cheese, green onions, and tomatoes.
03:48The potato is, like, also soft, but not too soft.
03:51So it can really hold the heft that is the barbecue pork on top.
03:57And the fried pimento balls.
03:59Homemade pimento cheese fried and served with a pepper jelly.
04:03Yo, not pepper jelly is no joke.
04:05The appetizers were a lot, but the entrees, they're going to need even more space.
04:11I'm super stoked.
04:12Wait, so one table for the apps and one for the entrees is a thing?
04:19I want that.
04:21Also, I need the signature Bama Bucks burger, a bison patty topped with, well, pretty much
04:27every topping your heart desires.
04:29So you have the chorizo meat, you have the onion rings, egg, bison, coleslaw, tomatoes, lettuce,
04:35and also cheese on top.
04:36But the chorizo hits me, like, immediately.
04:39And then everything else kind of follows in, like, this really beautiful symphony of a burger.
04:43Symphony is right.
04:45That burger is music to my mouth.
04:49And nothing would do for Nikki's trophy husband, John, than the trophy mount 14-ounce ribeye,
04:56a prize cut of premium Angus beef served with a savory melted tomato butter.
05:02Look at that.
05:03Oh, beauty.
05:06Wow.
05:06Double wow for this berry chimichanga a la mode with a sweet raspberry reduction.
05:13Between the delicious food and wild animals, Bama Bucks' visit was worth getting lost for,
05:20even if you can't take your new friends from the petting zoo home.
05:23Little baby boy.
05:25Sorry, Nikki.
05:26Baby Rue wants to stay with Mommy.
05:30Let's get back on the road, kids.
05:32We've got a lot of ground to cover.
05:33I promise not to sing the whole time.
05:35I'm definitely going to sing the whole time.
05:37Who's up for some air supply, huh?
05:42Next up, we're hitting full speed on the open road.
05:45They say life is a highway, and we're going to ride it until we find another great place to eat.
05:51Anyone with a hankering for a delicious slice of heaven knows there's only one town where you can pull over for the most perfect pies.
05:59Pioneer Pies in Pie Town, New Mexico.
06:02The pies in this area are so iconic, then in the 1920s, the local community was renamed Pie Town.
06:10There are almost more pies at Pioneer than there are people who live in this sweet old ghost town.
06:17With a population of only 200 or so, the restaurant counts on the travelers of Highway 60 to help deplete the overpopulation of pies.
06:28Got it, girl?
06:29And today, pie enthusiast Ivory Gonzalez has driven three hours to try all the pies.
06:35Oh, man.
06:37I feel like I'm so long to try this food.
06:39As soon as you come in, the smell just hits you.
06:42It smells like childhood, really.
06:43If your childhood smells like sweet, fresh fruit bubbling out of a homemade baked crust, then yes.
06:49I'm all for having dessert first, and I hope you packed your sweatpants, because there are a lot more pies where this came from.
06:59I'm going to try all of it.
07:00It's not every day you go to Pie Town.
07:02Pioneer's menu features over 15 fresh pies daily to choose from.
07:07Sweet, spicy, and savory pies so good, they're worth driving the extra mile to track down.
07:14At Pioneer, you can make a whole meal out of these pies.
07:18Order up hearty meatloaf and mashed potato mini pies.
07:22Big old handfuls of beef are baked in small bunt pans to create individual-sized pies.
07:29And for your next course, try an old-school Southwestern staple, the Frito Pie, Daisy Doolin' Style.
07:36Fresh chives, some wheat, sour cream.
07:44Mmm-hmm.
07:44Get some salsa.
07:49Mmm-hmm.
07:50Best Frito Pie, all of New Mexico.
07:52Right here.
07:55Here, they don't get stuck on confining their pies to a traditional crust.
07:59A Frito Pie is still a pie, and the apple of my eye.
08:03Speaking of apples, the real star of the Pioneer Show is the New Mexico apple with green chili and pine nuts.
08:11That's right, I said green chilies and pine nuts.
08:15New Mexico's OG apple pie recipe isn't messing around.
08:19It's almost like a pie lasagna, so there's layers of pinyon, apple, and then the green chili.
08:26The apples taste really good, very fresh, and green chili really stands out, super delicious.
08:32If I was ever going to get a flat tire on the highway, I hope it's in Pie Town.
08:37There's always room for pie, even after eating pie with a side of pie.
08:41But that's how they steer in all the trucker, roadster, and traveling customers daily at Pioneer.
08:48We're hopping back in the car, which is good, because I'm still hungry.
08:57Every state in America has small towns that tell a story and have something unique to offer, even Connecticut.
09:04I know it seems boring there, but it's not.
09:07Buried inside the tiny town of Litchfield, Connecticut, is one of the best places to eat in the East, Marketplace Tavern.
09:15The locals call it the best food in town.
09:18They also call it the Old County Jail, because it is.
09:23That's right.
09:23Go directly to jail.
09:25Do not pass go, or you might not be able to get a table.
09:28Fortunately, the folks at Marketplace Tavern aren't interested in locking you up and throwing away the key.
09:38They just want to make you lunch.
09:40Two for lunch?
09:41Three.
09:41Excellent.
09:43You enter the restaurant through a jail cell lined with the original bricks from the 1800s structure.
09:49I guess that's one good way to make sure nobody pulls a diamond dash.
09:53Feels like a piece of history when you're sitting here and dining.
09:55Litchfield County Jail closed in 1992, but remnants of prison life remain, like a fully intact warden's office in a solitary confinement cell.
10:07That's where they put the people who are rude to their server.
10:10Don't let the iron bars fool you.
10:12This American eatery wants your palate to run free and explore all the law-breaking, decadent comfort food, especially the Brussels sprouts.
10:22These are the slammers of the slammer.
10:25All right.
10:26Our famous Brussels sprouts.
10:28They're beautiful.
10:29Thank you very much.
10:30Enjoy.
10:31So our crispy Brussels sprouts, they're deep fried.
10:34That's why they're so good.
10:35The Brussels sprouts are deep fried year-round, but their preparation changes seasonally.
10:40In the crisp Connecticut fall, they're tossed with a roasted garlic aioli, dried cranberries, pecans, and fresh Vermont goat cheese.
10:52Almost every table gets one.
10:54And we kind of just built the menu around the Brussels sprouts.
10:57Not ordering these would be a crime.
11:00And I'm taking this guy right here.
11:02Another mainstay is the corruptible Tavern Mac and Cheese loaded with smoked Gouda bechamel, Parmesan bacon breadcrumbs, and caramelized onions.
11:17You can even top it with a tender, slow-roasted short rib, chicken, or shrimp.
11:24It's so Gouda.
11:24Hey, buddy, I do the puns around here.
11:29If anyone is going to be mac and cheesy, it's me.
11:33And entrees like the Tavern House meatloaf and the Jail House burger make this pit stop worth the extra risk.
11:40This burger is an X.
11:41Burger's big.
11:43It's juicy, patty, flavorful.
11:45I think I'll try the meatloaf next time I'm here at that little shot.
11:49That's right.
11:50There will be a next time if you can find your way back.
11:53If you ever get lost in Connecticut and are craving upscale bar food behind benign bars, then navigate your way to Marketplace Tavern.
12:03Tell everyone you know, at this restaurant, snitches get sandwiches.
12:08Okay, I just made that up.
12:13America is a great place to get lost if you know where you're going.
12:18Know what I mean?
12:18Let's leave the tree-lined winding roads of Connecticut behind and head west through the Rocky Mountains to Colorado Springs, Colorado.
12:27Our next stop is a restaurant run by a former pilot.
12:30He decided to crash-land his career in the air and stay grounded.
12:35But he missed his plane, so he got a new one.
12:38Sort of.
12:39I bought this from the government on an auction.
12:42Other people that buy this type of plane generally want it for scrap metal.
12:45Not too many people want to turn a plane into a restaurant.
12:49In 2002, pilot Steve Knatzer took a 1953 Boeing KC-97 and turned it into a restaurant.
12:57Some people say he's lost it.
12:59Or has he?
13:00The green chilies are definitely singing in my mouth.
13:04We're back in Colorado Springs, Colorado, sitting on the tarmac, ready to change our minds about airplane food at a restaurant called, what else?
13:15The Airplane.
13:16Guests enter through the terminal, and there's no newsstand here.
13:20Instead, aviation artifacts cover the walls.
13:23And for your safety, and the safety of those around you, uniform flight attendants lead the way through the cabin.
13:30Lucky diners can buckle up in one of 42 exclusive seats inside the actual plane.
13:36After making a quick pit stop in the cockpit to pretend that you're the captain, for now.
13:42Good thing traveler-adventure Crystal is here to take us on this delicious flight.
13:47We have made it to the Airplane Restaurant, and we're actually eating inside of an airplane, and this is going to be so cool.
13:57The menu takes off with an appetizing barrel roll.
14:01Savory chicken gets some heat from jalapeno and pepper jack cheese, all wrapped in a flaky tortilla with a cooling avocado ranch dip.
14:10So it's a unique combination, and I am digging it.
14:14The tangy chicken teriyaki sando with melted Swiss and grilled pineapple will cause you to loosen your seatbelt.
14:23Mm-hmm.
14:24That looks good.
14:26And the afterburner burger kicks up the heat with zesty guac, fiery chilies, and pepper jack cheese.
14:35Oh, wow.
14:37It packs a little bit of a punch with the flavors.
14:40A little bit of that spice.
14:41The green chilies are definitely singing in my mouth.
14:45The subtleties of the pepper jack, and then that vinegar from the pickle.
14:49This is a good burger.
14:51Finding this restaurant is easy enough.
14:54Just take a left out of the mountain and go straight until you find the smoking airplane that smells like burgers.
14:59Getting lost at this crash site actually has a happy ending.
15:03Okay, we've landed safely in the springs.
15:11Now it's time to head down to the country roads in West Virginia.
15:15Mountain Llama, take me to the hot dogs.
15:18Our final detour lands us at the legendary hot dog haunt, Hillbilly Hot Dogs, in Lasage, West Virginia.
15:25Chelsea and Amy are medical residents who love to pack the car with friends and get lost looking for some of the state's quirkiest restaurants.
15:37All right, we are on our way.
15:40I'm going to Weenie Pam.
15:41And we're off.
15:42And we're off to get some weenies.
15:45So where exactly are we headed, ladies?
15:49Because I am going to be honest.
15:50I have no idea where we are.
15:52And neither do you.
15:54How much further till you get there?
15:58Hillbilly Hot Dogs is hard to miss as you drive up Route 2.
16:02And when you arrive at this glorious junkyard, you'll know why.
16:05This is a bucket list road trip destination.
16:09Take a pic for social media in an old bathtub.
16:11Check.
16:12Find a weird baby doll in a box.
16:15Check.
16:16Table for four in an old school bus.
16:18Check, please.
16:22Food fans Chelsea and Amy and their friends have made it to the junkyard and are hungry for some of those famous far out Franks.
16:31Bring on the weenies.
16:33Holy hot dogs.
16:35You can get married there, too.
16:37There it is.
16:38They have tied knots.
16:40Nothing like saying I do with chili dog breath.
16:44Too bad the chapel is closed because the hot dogs are so good.
16:52You're going to want to marry them.
16:54Bring on the weenies.
16:56Will somebody get Amy a weenie, please?
16:58It's estimated that Americans eat over 20 billion hot dogs each year.
17:04And Hillbilly Hot Dogs is making a pretty big dent in these numbers.
17:09They have over 25 different dogs on the menu.
17:12But there's one big reason why people come here.
17:15One giant, beefy, spicy, insane reason.
17:20The homewrecker.
17:22This is the biggest hot dog I've ever seen in my life.
17:33Homewrecker.
17:35The homewrecker is a one pound deep fried hot dog with two pounds of toppings.
17:42That's right.
17:43It weighs more than some actual puppy dogs.
17:46And I bet this dog wrecks more than just homes.
17:50This is a group effort hot dog.
17:53Oh, man.
17:54That was impressive.
17:56That's a big stretch.
17:57That is so good.
17:58Holy smokes.
18:00Teamwork makes the dream work.
18:02But if you can eat this floozy of a hot dog in 12 minutes, you get heartburn and a free T-shirt.
18:09There's no way anybody can eat this in 12 minutes.
18:11Think about all of this in your stomach.
18:13Oh, but they have.
18:15They have.
18:16Homewrecker one.
18:18Poor girl, you.
18:20Sometimes it's just better to take the loss.
18:23We've all seen the end of a hot dog eating contest.
18:27Yes, there are winners.
18:29But glory comes with a price.
18:31Food coma.
18:33We killed her.
18:34Grab the defibrillator or some smelling salt.
18:37Stat.
18:39And we're clear.
18:44She's going to be okay.
18:45What road trip would be complete without seeing an abandoned bus?
18:49Or 50.
18:50But only one has Frank's this good.
18:53These big barkers are worth losing your way and your mind over.
18:57Hot dogs are one of America's favorite foods.
19:00And these hillbilly hot dogs are the best in show.
19:0410 out of 10.
19:06Best hot dog restaurant I've ever been to, for sure.
19:09Looks like we finally found our way home.
19:11I like getting lost in America with you guys.
19:14We had some good times.
19:15The endless apps and baby animals in Alabama.
19:19Pie so good, they named the town after it.
19:22Breaking out for Brussels sprouts in Connecticut.
19:25That flightless flight.
19:26And the best airplane food in Colorado.
19:29And those West Virginia hot dogs that gave Coney Island a run for its relish.
19:35No need for directions when you're looking for a culinary adventure.
19:39Sometimes it's good to get lost.
19:42I'm Michael Yeo and we'll see you next time on 1,000 Ways to Die.
