00:55I want you to hold my hand and jump, because I will jump with you.
00:58If you didn't think cuisine could be this mind-bending, then get ready to get bit on this episode of 1,000 Ways to Dine.
01:07This is so cool.
01:12That's an alien brain.
01:13The dining experiences are distorted at these distinct eateries.
01:24Leave your logic behind and amp up your imagination as we leap into mind-bending meals.
01:31Our first mental flex lands us in one of the most colorful cities in the Midwest, Chicago, Illinois.
01:41But the owners of 2D restaurants said, hey, not so fast with the color, sending customers' minds on tilt when they created a two-dimensional comic book setting, serving mochi donuts in Asian-inspired fried chicken sandwiches.
01:59Vanessa, who is a fantastic interior designer, created this concept of a black-and-white illusional world.
02:11Our vision was to create a space for our guests to be able to transport into a monochrome world.
02:24A meal with 2D would be like nowhere else.
02:28You would be immersed in this life-size comic book.
02:32Vanessa, raised in Vietnam, and Kevin, raised in Taiwan, both loved reading Japanese comics as kids, which is why they used very specific line art called manga to transform the space from average to sublime.
02:47It had very simple outlining, classic black-and-white with very short shading lines.
02:53In 2D, the superheroes in this comic book are the ones that painted this space.
02:59Only Vanessa, Kevin, the food, and the guests are 3D and colorful.
03:04Unless you're a goth, and then you'll probably just blend in with the walls.
03:09People often think we print the wall, not thinking everything was hand-drawn.
03:15Once they sit down, they're able to see all the detail Vanessa put in.
03:19That experience always blown people apart.
03:22Wow, look at this!
03:23Can't afford a flight to Paris?
03:25Just step into the dining room.
03:27Growing up in Vietnam, they're a strong influence of French colonial style.
03:34Everything was super-ordinated to the French architecture.
03:392D Restaurant is a less colorful but equally beautiful trip to the City of Lights by the way of Vanessa's imagination.
03:47You can take a selfie in a Parisian-style soaking tub because, as Parisians say, pics or it didn't happen.
03:56But they say it in French.
03:59A tub selfie with clothes on?
04:02That's a first.
04:04But you won't find any escargot here.
04:062D Restaurant is an explosion of Pan-Asian treats.
04:10First up is the Taiwanese night market staple, a buttermilk fried chicken sandwich.
04:19We started using a freshly baked brioche bomb.
04:25Now we want to add in the acidity.
04:27Have our Japanese citrus pickle, Korean citron red onions, and our freshly made coleslaw,
04:34which is a mixture of Japanese mayo.
04:38Mixing with Taiwanese cabbage, with carrots.
04:42And from there, we also added in the fresh chicken side,
04:46marinated in a unique 2D blend of buttermilk, including 17 different kinds of spice.
04:51It's twice fried for the ultra-crispiness.
04:54Now that's food that'll make you say, kapow!
04:58But I hope you save room for dessert, because 2D makes their own mind-bending twist on mochi.
05:06These donuts from Japan are traditionally crispy on the outside, with a very dense center.
05:13Mochi donut over a seat oftentimes can be perceived as a bit too chewy.
05:19We tweak the recipe a bit to make it fit more with local Chicagoans' palate, to make it airier and fluffy.
05:25It's not a mind-bending donut without a topping.
05:30And 2D makes their mochi look like pieces of art,
05:33which is why this spot gets high marks for bending our minds and our taste buds.
05:39I wonder if they make a yochi donut.
05:46In Tokyo, Japan,
05:48a city known for its wildly diverse dining,
05:53is the Japanese fusion restaurant named Tree by Naked.
05:58It attracts fine dining and art lovers
06:00for a virtual mind-bending experience,
06:03and to each of the 5 elements,
06:05via different tasting courses.
06:08So this is the
06:09the
06:09the
06:09the
06:10the
06:11the
06:11the experience includes a VR mask,
06:16shaped like animal heads that will make you go out of your head and into another world.
06:22Japanese traveler Inna is taking us on a dinner date to another dimension,
06:34rooted in nature where food and art merge,
06:37to create a never-before-seen setting,
06:40sure to flex the muscles of your mind.
06:43Starting off with a salad that will melt in your mouth
06:46after the greens virtually grow from a seed on your plate.
06:50But once it's growing up,
06:53I made it!
06:55Thanks to projection mapping and VR,
06:58a salad with crab stuffed tomato
07:00has been magically planted on Inna's plate
07:03to represent Earth.
07:06Mmm!
07:06They add the spice,
07:09so it's more tasty.
07:11Mmm!
07:12A rumble in the jungle
07:14shakes us into the next element.
07:19Fire!
07:21Served up on a virtual barbecue,
07:24the pulled pork tostada comes complete with virtual flames
07:27that will melt your mind
07:29and fire up your appetite.
07:32Mmm!
07:33As guests cool down from the heat,
07:35they can wet their whistle with water,
07:37served as clear dashi soup with red snapper.
07:41That's so tasty.
07:44And then wind flies in on the wings of a phoenix
07:47with an egg-shaped chicken in Madera sauce.
07:50Mmm!
07:51The main course finally arrives
07:54as the culmination of all five elements in one plate,
07:58representing the creation of the universe.
08:01And doesn't disappoint,
08:02as it's served up
08:03as a full-on show
08:05of roasted Wagyu beef.
08:08So dramatic.
08:10I always cry.
08:12I'm almost crying
08:14because I'm not eating Wagyu right now.
08:17After that mind-bending meal
08:18that virtually grew on my plate,
08:21my mind is made up.
08:22I'm using my VR glasses for dinner.
08:25How do I find a food delivery app on this thing?
08:32Our next mind-bending meal
08:34takes us to Las Vegas, Nevada.
08:36Get ready to dive into a twisted journey
08:39as your brain and mouth
08:41are submerged 20,000 leagues under the sea
08:44for this 16-course tasting menu
08:46based on the Jules Verne classic novel.
08:50This isn't a dinner.
08:51It's not just food.
08:52I may not be reading it to you,
08:53but I'm telling you a story.
08:55At 300 Clams of Pop,
08:57the chef recreates meals fed to the prisoners
09:00aboard Captain Nemo's submarine.
09:03Only in Vegas will people pay that much
09:06for prison food.
09:07We're talking about being trapped.
09:08We're talking about being imprisoned
09:10under the ocean in a place
09:12where literally no one can find you.
09:14I want to scare you.
09:16I want to push you.
09:17I want to intimidate you.
09:18The idea is that we're on this journey together.
09:20I want you to hold my hand and jump
09:22because I will jump with you.
09:24Guests jump in headfirst into a delicate dish
09:27that is designed to lure them
09:29into a false sense of security.
09:31The eggs and eggs is what we call it.
09:33It's a tapioca patty topped with a leek nest,
09:36a soft-boiled quail egg,
09:37and no cetric gold caviar.
09:40Diners learn to test the waters of their minds
09:43with a tongue-in-cheek take
09:44on Hokkaido Japanese uni.
09:47I had this woman make me these plates
09:49of my open mouth with my tongue sticking out,
09:51and then people have to eat uni right off of it.
09:54Press your lips to my lips, all right?
09:57And then you are going to lick the uni out,
09:59Cruel Intention style.
10:01Beautiful.
10:02Oh, my God!
10:03That's good!
10:05That's actually really good.
10:06I thought it was, like, more food,
10:08but that's actually a legit tongue.
10:12I usually don't kiss my food on the first date,
10:15but the tongue feels more like a real plate than a face.
10:19It's the creamy and salty uni
10:21that makes you feel like you're behind the bleachers
10:24in eighth grade.
10:26Now that the guests have French kissed their last dish
10:29and didn't leave,
10:30I think they're mentally ready for what's next.
10:33The grand finale is the head of a giant roast pig.
10:38That is sure to send your head spinning.
10:40It makes you feel like you're going to be sacrificed next.
10:43It's supposed to intimidate you,
10:46and then you smell it,
10:49and you go,
10:49what is that?
10:51It then comes to you on these very tiny,
10:52little delicate stones
10:54with flowers and puree
10:56and this perfect little bite.
10:58Receiving something else in its entirety
10:59brings you on this entire baseline
11:02of what you thought you know is trash.
11:06From coming face-to-face with pig heads
11:09to mouth-to-mouth with your plate,
11:11this undersea epic adventure
11:13turned tasting experience
11:15is anything but dull
11:16and is a reminder
11:18not to believe everything we read

12:36with a flavor burst
12:38of mouth-watering watermelon salsa,
12:41avocado paste,
12:42and crispy plantain chips.
12:44The panoramic view of the city
12:46is as breathtaking as the dish.
12:49As the music takes over,
12:51we're in another South American hot spot.
12:57We're in Brazil.
12:59Time for the dish.
13:01The tantalizing smell of carne asada
13:04with peppers and herb-roasted potatoes
13:07is on fire.
13:08I like my steak with more sizzle than grizzle.
13:13And I'm just giving it a crispy odor wave for you, okay?
13:17Does anybody know where we're going next?

14:22to book my next vacation at Atmos.
14:26Okay, here we go.
14:27We're out of here.
14:28Thank you so much.
14:29For the last stop on our journey
14:35for the most mind-bending meals,
14:37we're bound for Singapore
14:39to visit Absurdity's Restaurant,
14:42a dining experience where nothing is as it seems,
14:46including the entrance,
14:48which goes underground as a coffee shop storefront.
14:51Hello.
14:52Welcome.
14:52Come on in.
14:54Hey, I told you this was going to be crazy.
14:57Buckle up, buttercup.
14:58Welcome.
14:59To the Absurdity's experience.
15:01In reality,
15:02you make a reservation
15:03for the multi-course menu
15:05that is served as diners and bark
15:07on a journey through time and space.
15:10I'm in a tunnel.
15:12To eat a wide range of cuisine,
15:14from Japanese to American.
15:17This is Burger and Ash.
15:20All high-concept works of art served in disguise.
15:24So the burger has a very special pettis.
15:27Now I'm picturing a cheeseburger
15:28with a mustache and glasses on.
15:31Aren't you?
15:31Goodbye to take a guess.
15:36Oh, it's over there?
15:37Let's go.
15:37Jonathan Wee, realtor by day, foodie by night,
15:41is bringing his friends, Carissa and Joanne,
15:45into the unknown with him.
15:47Because trying places that are outside the box
15:49is way more fun with witnesses.
15:51I mean, friends.
15:53You don't know what to expect.
15:55Yeah.
15:55Totally not.
15:56The first door over there leads to infinity.
16:00Are we ready to proceed into infinity?
16:02Yes.
16:03I can't even walk straight anymore.
16:06This is cool.
16:08Wow.
16:09What is this place?
16:11This is so cool.
16:13Once you make it through Bazaar and Beyond,
16:15you enter the Twisted Tree of Life room
16:18and are served burgers in ash.
16:21Sounds well done.
16:23Do you know what you're eating?
16:24That's the burning question.
16:26All right, let's start with the fries.
16:29Take a bite and take a guess.
16:32Oh, wait.
16:34What is it?
16:34What is it?
16:35What?
16:36I know this.
16:38Tapioca.
16:39Yes.
16:39Yes.
16:40I knew it.
16:41Tapioca fries doused in edible chocolate
16:44sprinkled with olives and ash.
16:46And the burger is actually made of jackfruit.
16:49If you learn one thing at this point,
16:52is to expect the unexpected,
16:55like time travel.
16:57And just like that,
16:58you're headed to maybe the scariest place of all,
17:02a retro-style 1950s kitchen in America.
17:05So we had to fire a good night.
17:08Yes, sorry, Jonathan,
17:09but this next deceiving dish will definitely not disappoint.
17:14This is mushroom.
17:14It's mushroom.
17:15Mushroom soup.
17:16Mushroom soup.
17:17Hey, that's not breakfast.
17:19That's the mother of all comfort foods,
17:22the chicken pot pie.
17:24The milk is a mushroom soup surrounding vegetables,
17:27grilled chicken,
17:29and a cauliflower puree.
17:30All coated in, what else?
17:33Cornflakes.
17:35Diners leave the kitchen Alice in Wonderland style
17:38and enter a room that says,
17:41this is where all the magic happens.
17:43Harry Potter's room.
17:44Harry Potter's room.
17:45You're going to pick a wand,
17:47and you're going to study some spells.
17:49I just got a call from our legal department.
17:52For clarity, this is a generic wizard room.
17:57Carry on.
17:58In the wizard's room,
18:00magic is made as you mix ingredients yourself
18:02in the form of seafood risotto
18:04with squid, carrots,
18:06and topped with shards of glass.
18:08Mmm.
18:09Hope they have a good dentist.
18:11Okay, so now you guys can taste
18:12a little bit of the glass.
18:15Look at sugar.
18:17Yes, it is indeed sugar
18:18with a little bit of lime zest.
18:20And for their next trick,
18:21you have to find your way out.
18:23Pass the apothecary cabinets
18:24to get your ticket to the sky.
18:26Thank you for flying with us
18:29at Air Absurdities.
18:31Remember, if it's not absurd,
18:34it's not Air Absurdities.
18:37It's the 1970s,
18:38and something tells me
18:40this flight serves more
18:41than a bag of peanuts.
18:43Cheers.
18:43Cheers.
18:44Cheers.
18:44We're going to take off,
18:48and then I'm going to get you your dessert,
18:50and then I just relax, enjoy.
18:52The dessert you're served
18:54is a lychee jelly telephone.
18:57It's calling on you
18:57to suspend your disbelief,
18:59and also to call your mom.
19:02It's good.
19:02And when you land back in Singapore,
19:04you'll be able to tell everyone
19:07about the time you traveled
19:08through time and space
19:09and defied all culinary expectations.
19:13Their minds will shatter
19:14just hearing about
19:16your mind-bending experience.
19:18food that went from
19:21virtual reality
19:23to actual reality.
19:28Cleverly decorated mochi donuts
19:30in a comic book come to life.
19:33A 19th century meal
19:35fit for a pirate.
19:37A restaurant so absurd
19:39that your dessert is a telephone.
19:42It's food.
19:43To dining around the world
19:44without moving a muscle.
19:46It's safe to say
19:47that this was a mind-bending journey.
19:51I need to get my head straight.
19:53I'm Michael Yeo.
19:54See you next time
19:55on 1,000 Ways to Dine.
