00:02:14The End
00:02:44Information desk
00:02:50Yes, sir, I'll take care of it
00:02:52Hey, you changed your hairdo
00:02:54I like it
00:02:55Well, thank you
00:02:56He's been trying to get a job here as a photographer
00:03:00Well, I'd like to see a fellow like that get a job here
00:03:02Well, that's funny
00:03:03I was thinking the same thing
00:03:06I'm sorry, Mr. Early, you may as well stop trying
00:03:28You see, we can't hire a photographer who hasn't had newspaper experience
00:03:32And I can't get experience without being hired
00:03:34Look, Miss Bennett, I can't afford to stop trying
00:03:37This is good
00:03:40Think we can use it, come with me
00:03:43Well, when did this come in?
00:03:51David, look at this
00:04:00How did you get it?
00:04:03Well, I just happened to be passing by
00:04:06That's good
00:04:07We can use it
00:04:08That's what I thought
00:04:10All right, whatever your name is, you've just sold a picture
00:04:12Congratulations
00:04:13Well, thanks, Miss Bennett, but you see, the picture's not for sale
00:04:17What I want is a job
00:04:19Put me on for a week on a trial basis
00:04:21Stop me as of today
00:04:22And you own this picture
00:04:23Because I took it on your time
00:04:24Look, Antfellow, I like to see ambition
00:04:27But you can't pull that sort of thing on the newspaper
00:04:30No?
00:04:32Well, you'll have to forgive me
00:04:34You see, I have no newspaper experience
00:04:36You got it all figured out, haven't you?
00:04:40We could use another man
00:04:41All right, put him on for a week
00:04:44Thanks, Mr. Glover
00:04:47Take Skinner into the doghouse and put him in
00:04:50Well, you got your wish
00:04:55I feel like Aladdin
00:04:56You know, the guy with a lamp
00:04:58Rub it and the porter shows up with the rent money or a light lunch
00:05:01Incidentally, Miss Bennett
00:05:02What's this doghouse business?
00:05:05Oh, I was afraid you would ask me
00:05:07It's lost and found dogs
00:05:10It's not much of a job, but you might get some experience
00:05:12Bobby
00:05:13I can't tell you how much I appreciate this
00:05:16It's only for a week, but
00:05:18It's my toll on the door
00:05:19Who knows what it might lead to
00:05:21You're the new man?
00:05:50You're the new man?
00:05:51That's right.
00:05:52Well, I'm one of the old ones, Fred Thurman.
00:05:55If there's anything you need that you can't find, give a shout.
00:05:58Thanks.
00:06:00I hate street accidents.
00:06:01I can't stand the sight of blood.
00:06:02You can tell I took this one with my eyes shut.
00:06:05To me, a picture's a picture.
00:06:15How did it go?
00:06:17I'm not sure.
00:06:20I'm not sure.
00:06:26Pretty bad, huh?
00:06:28No, they're not bad, but...
00:06:30But you can't use any.
00:06:32No, but...
00:06:34I didn't think you could.
00:06:37Why did you take so many?
00:06:39This may be the last chance I have.
00:06:41I want to make it count.
00:06:43I can understand that.
00:06:44Everybody feels like that the first day, but after a while...
00:06:47After a while, I may not be here.
00:06:49I don't have any days to waste.
00:06:55Could you have dinner with me tonight?
00:06:57Well, I...
00:06:58You're not free?
00:06:59Well, yes, I'm free, but I was just thinking if you'd like an advance in your pay, I think I could arrange it.
00:07:05Well, that won't be necessary.
00:07:07Do you have any objection to having dinner with me?
00:07:10No, not at all.
00:07:11Well, if you can stand my cooking.
00:07:14I'll take a chance.
00:07:16I'll take a chance.
00:07:17I'll take a chance.
00:07:18This is the address.
00:07:19That's very nice of you.
00:07:20Thanks.
00:07:21Want some more coffee?
00:07:22Thanks.
00:07:23Who's this, your landlord?
00:07:24He's nothing of the kind.
00:07:25He's a dentist.
00:07:26And a very good one from Portland.
00:07:28His picture's there because I love him and I expect to marry him.
00:07:30When?
00:07:31Well, he practices in Portland and I have a standing offer of a job with the Portland Herald.
00:07:37That'll be a mistake.
00:07:38Dentist should be seen twice a year.
00:07:39Not that one.
00:07:40I go up to Portland to see him every weekend I can get a coffee.
00:07:43I can get a coffee.
00:07:44I can get a coffee.
00:07:45You want some coffee?
00:07:46Thanks.
00:07:47Who's this, your landlord?
00:07:48I don't think I want my wife to work.
00:07:49I don't think I'd want my wife to work.
00:07:51I don't think I'd want my wife to work.
00:07:52You know, I don't think I'd want my wife to work.
00:07:54You know, I don't think I'd want my wife to work.
00:07:55And I have a standing offer of a job with the Portland Herald.
00:07:57That'll be a mistake.
00:07:58Dentist should be seen twice a year.
00:07:59Not that one.
00:08:00I go up to Portland to see him every weekend I can get away from the paper.
00:08:01You must think a lot of your bridge work.
00:08:03I love it.
00:08:06Then you're, uh, you're gonna work after you're married.
00:08:11Until I'm bogged down in babies.
00:08:13I don't think I'd want my wife to work.
00:08:16I don't think you've thought about it very much.
00:08:20Yeah, I guess you're right.
00:08:22You still haven't told me when you're gonna be married.
00:08:25Well, I'm not sure.
00:08:26Maybe in a couple of months.
00:08:28Whenever I'm ready to leave here.
00:08:30Why?
00:08:31A couple of months?
00:08:33That doesn't give me much time.
00:08:36I guess it's time for you to go.
00:08:43This is the kind of living room I'd like to have.
00:08:45You want to see the place I live in.
00:08:47You could fit my whole apartment into your bedroom.
00:08:52Blink those long lashes of yours, you knock over a tripod.
00:08:56Ellen, can you be honest with me?
00:09:08Of course, why not?
00:09:10You invited me here, didn't I?
00:09:12Why?
00:09:13I don't know, Jack.
00:09:15I suppose I felt sorry for you.
00:09:17Ellen.
00:09:19Nobody has ever been as nice to me as you have.
00:09:23You're spoiling me for the rest of the world.
00:09:30You'll get along.
00:09:32Incidentally, that's a very bad habit you had.
00:09:36Leaving your latchkey under the doormat.
00:09:38I think you'd better go.
00:09:47Good night, Ellen.
00:09:48Good night.
00:10:08Good night.
00:10:09Good night.
00:10:10Good night.
00:10:11Good night.
00:10:12Let's go.
00:10:42That guy's flightin' with the undertaker.
00:10:50Stay with him for a while. The romance might be interesting.
00:10:52Help! Help!
00:11:12Help!
00:11:18The door's dead. I can't get out.
00:11:20What's your name?
00:11:21Help me. We'll sink it in the mud.
00:11:23What's your name?
00:11:24Joe Downing. Pull me out, will you?
00:11:27Stick your head out the window, Joe.
00:11:29I can't get through without help. You'll have to pull me.
00:11:33All right, now, reach your arms out and look up towards the sky.
00:11:40Help me with that.
00:11:41Thanks, Joe.
00:11:42Hey, where are you going? I'll drown.
00:11:45There's a guy in trouble down there. See if you can help him.
00:11:47I'm gonna call an ambulance. Daily record.
00:11:49That shot was really a beautiful piece of newspaper photography.
00:11:56It was luck. I just happened to be passing by.
00:11:58It was more than luck.
00:11:59What do you mean?
00:12:00It was lucky you were around at the time, but just being there doesn't get the shot.
00:12:04Oh, don't undersell luck. Just pray that it holds out.
00:12:07Luck's mighty important in this racket.
00:12:09But unreliable.
00:12:11After a while, you won't have to depend on that.
00:12:13You'll develop contacts who'll phone and tip you off to things.
00:12:16Yeah, I guess you're right.
00:12:18See you later.
00:12:19So long.
00:12:20Good luck.
00:12:27Early.
00:12:28It's another good picture. How'd you happen to get it?
00:12:30Well, I was just passing by.
00:12:32The next time you just happened to be passing by, suppose you call the desk so we can get a story to go with it before you bring your picture in.
00:12:38This morning we had the only picture in town.
00:12:41But we didn't have a story.
00:12:43Early.
00:12:44What we're trying to do on this paper is to put out the best sheet we can.
00:12:48We're trying to do this together.
00:12:50We're not competing with each other.
00:12:52Understand?
00:12:54I understand.
00:12:55Tell Thurman to come in, will you please?
00:13:01Thurman!
00:13:08What's up?
00:13:09What's up?
00:13:10City desk?
00:13:11Yeah.
00:13:12Yeah.
00:13:13City desk?
00:13:14Yeah.
00:13:15Yeah.
00:13:16City desk.
00:13:18Thurman?
00:13:19Yeah, he's around someplace.
00:13:20Fire?
00:13:21Where?
00:13:22What'd he ask me?
00:13:24Thurman?
00:13:26Yeah, he's around some place.
00:13:29Fire?
00:13:31Where?
00:13:35Yeah, I'll give him the message right away.
00:13:37Yeah, got it.
00:13:39Anything doing early?
00:13:41Not a thing, Thurman. Not a thing.
00:13:44By the way, Wood, Press, I don't care if you're the mayor.
00:13:54The people trapped us there and you ain't helping us get them out.
00:14:14Hold it!
00:14:27Go ahead, jump!
00:14:33He just happened to be passing by.
00:14:36Well, maybe you're right.
00:14:38He's certainly lucky enough.
00:14:40He's also alert and he has one other qualification for the assignment.
00:14:43He's here.
00:14:44Yes, that's important.
00:14:46None of the others will be back in time?
00:14:47No.
00:14:48Not a one.
00:14:49All right.
00:14:50Tell him to come in and see me.
00:14:52Right.
00:14:59Good afternoon, Mr. Aladdin.
00:15:01No matter what you may hear, I did not set that building on fire.
00:15:04Is David still riding you?
00:15:06You mustn't mind him. His bark is much worse than his bike.
00:15:08Please, I wish you wouldn't use that expression.
00:15:10Jack, you've got an assignment.
00:15:12Lost and found dogs?
00:15:13No, a real assignment.
00:15:14And you better hurry in and see David before he changes his mind.
00:15:17I'll be around and see you tonight.
00:15:19No, you can't do that. I have to go to...
00:15:20Leave the key under the map.
00:15:21Leave the key under the map.
00:15:32You've heard of Nick Palmer.
00:15:34Yes, sir.
00:15:35He's managed to squirm out of several well-earned prison sentences.
00:15:37He's being booked today. He'll probably wriggle right out.
00:15:40Your job is to go down there and get a picture of him.
00:15:42Sounds easy.
00:15:43Anything particular you like in the way of Angle, sir?
00:15:46Yes.
00:15:47I'd like to see his face.
00:15:49Well, sure, but...
00:15:51Listen.
00:15:52All the papers in town will be covering the criminal court's building just in case.
00:15:56But Palmer doesn't cooperate with photographers.
00:15:59The stuff in the morgue is five years old.
00:16:02And that's only with his hat covering his face or the back of his head.
00:16:05We'd like to get more.
00:16:07I'll get it, sir.
00:16:09Early, you don't seem to...
00:16:13Never mind.
00:16:14Thank you, sir.
00:16:15Early.
00:16:16Yes, sir.
00:16:17Are you from the south?
00:16:18No, sir.
00:16:19Then cut out the sir.
00:16:22Right.
00:16:28Nick didn't get here yet, did he?
00:16:30What are you gonna do, kid? Take a picture?
00:16:32I'm gonna get an exclusive.
00:16:34You are, huh?
00:16:35Well, how about sharing it with us?
00:16:37Here he comes.
00:16:38Don't try it, boy.
00:16:39Unless Nick Palmer gives you no cake.
00:16:40Don't try it, boy.
00:16:41Unless Nick Palmer gives you no cake.
00:17:03No, that's fine.
00:17:08No, that's fine.
00:17:09Hello.
00:17:10Isn't this next car?
00:17:11I don't think I know you.
00:17:12Well, that's easily fixed.
00:17:13Jack Early, the Daily Record.
00:17:14I was happier the way it was before.
00:17:15Is it people in general you don't like, or just me in particular?
00:17:21You can't be me.
00:17:22You don't know me well enough to dislike you.
00:17:23Must be people in general, huh?
00:17:24Go away.
00:17:25Go away.
00:17:26On the other hand, you seem to dislike me enough for us to be old friends.
00:17:29Miss, uh...
00:17:30It's Mrs.
00:17:31Mrs. Nick Palmer.
00:17:32Now, please go away.
00:17:33Nick's wife.
00:17:34Now I'm really impressed with Nick.
00:17:35Nick.
00:17:36Nick's wife.
00:17:37Now I'm really impressed with Nick.
00:17:39Nick's going to pose for me when he comes out.
00:17:43I change my mind.
00:17:44Don't go away.
00:17:45Don't go away.
00:17:46I'm a little bit surprised.
00:17:48Now, please, go away.
00:17:50Nick's wife.
00:17:52Now I'm really impressed with Nick.
00:17:58Nick's gonna pose for me when he comes out.
00:18:01I change my mind. Don't go away.
00:18:05I want to be here when you get Nick to pose for you.
00:18:08You think he won't?
00:18:10Listen, sweetheart, I have a way of getting people to do what I want them to.
00:18:13This is your chance. Here he comes.
00:18:18Will you pose for me, Mr. Farmer?
00:18:20Hey, don't point that thing at me. It might go off and hurt someone.
00:18:23It'll mean a bonus for me if I get an exclusive of you, Mr. Farmer.
00:18:26Exclusive? You must be new around here.
00:18:30You know, Mr. Farmer, if you keep on acting the way you do,
00:18:32the public will get an impression that you're a crook.
00:18:35What?
00:18:35If I don't get this picture, my paper will dig up that old one of you covering up your face.
00:18:40After all, you're a businessman.
00:18:42Hiding behind your fedora like that,
00:18:44who's gonna have confidence in your perfectly respectable enterprises?
00:18:47Now, why not try it my way?
00:18:48Just give me a couple of seconds,
00:18:50and tomorrow morning you'll be delivered with a milk looking like George Washington.
00:18:53I promise you.
00:18:54You know, I don't know whether you're a bright young man or a liar.
00:18:58People that lie to me aren't very bright.
00:19:00I know it.
00:19:01You check me for what appears in tomorrow's paper.
00:19:03I will.
00:19:04What about my picture?
00:19:06All right, make it fast.
00:19:07Thanks, Mr. Farmer.
00:19:13Is that fast enough?
00:19:14You know, I like bright young men.
00:19:16You know where I live?
00:19:17Be there at four o'clock tomorrow and see me.
00:19:19I'll be there, Nick.
00:19:20I'll be reading the papers, too.
00:19:29Did you get it?
00:19:30How did you do it?
00:19:31Hey, did he post?
00:19:32Were you?
00:19:32We're all set, then.
00:19:35This does it, Ellen.
00:19:43You won't need this for a minute.
00:19:44No.
00:19:46Your boy came through.
00:19:47He got Palmer's face all right.
00:19:49Yeah, my boy came through.
00:19:52If I didn't know it was impossible,
00:19:53I'd almost say he got Palmer to vote for him.
00:19:55Well, however he managed to get it,
00:19:58I think he's proved himself.
00:20:00Which means you'd like to keep him.
00:20:03Is that it?
00:20:04We'd be fools if we didn't.
00:20:06Oh, I don't know, Ellen.
00:20:07I just don't know.
00:20:09Everything he's done means boosted circulation,
00:20:11but I don't like him.
00:20:14Maybe that's because you don't understand him.
00:20:16He's told me a little about himself.
00:20:18The usual story.
00:20:19One meaningless job after the other.
00:20:22He's never really had a chance to aim at anything.
00:20:26But he's got such a terrible, driving ambition.
00:20:29But that's a virtue, isn't it?
00:20:31The feeling I get from early is that he'd stop at nothing.
00:20:34And that's not a virtue.
00:20:36All he needs is a chance, and then he'll settle down.
00:20:39You don't like him.
00:20:41But he's a good man, and we can use him.
00:20:45Well, maybe you're right.
00:20:46I'll think it over.
00:20:46I really will think it over.
00:20:56Ellen, are you going to Portland this weekend?
00:20:58Well, no.
00:20:59I'm a little busy.
00:21:01What's that?
00:21:02I have a lot of work I want to straighten out.
00:21:04I guess that was my first frustration.
00:21:16You're not listening.
00:21:21I'm sorry.
00:21:24I'm a little tired.
00:21:26No, you're not.
00:21:27You're annoyed at yourself.
00:21:30I don't know what you mean.
00:21:31You canceled a dentist's appointment.
00:21:34I couldn't make it this weekend.
00:21:35I have too much work to do.
00:21:37And you left the key under the mat.
00:21:41Hey, wait a minute.
00:21:46Walk, do not run to the nearest exit.
00:21:52Hello?
00:21:54Hurley, what are you doing there?
00:21:56Well, there was a report that a lady slipped in the bathtub.
00:21:58Hello?
00:22:00Yes, David.
00:22:02No, of course.
00:22:03I'm perfectly all right.
00:22:06You did?
00:22:09Wonderful.
00:22:14Of course I'll tell him.
00:22:17Yes.
00:22:18See you Monday.
00:22:19Bye.
00:22:23Congratulations.
00:22:25What for?
00:22:26You're on the staff.
00:22:29Permanently.
00:22:33Thanks, Ellen.
00:22:34You earned it.
00:22:37I know I owe this to you.
00:22:39Nonsense.
00:22:40It was all your own doing.
00:22:44I'll always be grateful to you, Ellen.
00:22:47Jack, you need have no feeling of gratitude toward me or anyone else.
00:22:51My feeling for you goes a lot deeper than gratitude.
00:22:56I know I'm going to tell you what she said.
00:23:142.30 in the afternoon.
00:23:16That's nice.
00:23:17That's the way people should live.
00:23:19For a moment, I was afraid you wouldn't approve.
00:23:21Oh, do you like some coffee?
00:23:25Oh, thanks, no.
00:23:27You invited me to come and see you.
00:23:30I thought now would be a good time.
00:23:31I thought I told you four o'clock would be a good time.
00:23:34I know, but I wanted to see you while you were still impressed
00:23:36with the fact that I made you look good, like I said.
00:23:38All right, we are impressed, like you said.
00:23:43It was so flattering the boss accused me of being your son.
00:23:46Well, just what do you expect to get out of impressing me?
00:23:55Well, I have a way of just happening to pass by
00:24:00at important moments and taking pictures.
00:24:04At the office, they call it luck or journalistic instinct.
00:24:08I let them call it whatever they like.
00:24:10What do you call it?
00:24:11Planning.
00:24:13I see.
00:24:13Well, just where do I enter your planning?
00:24:17Well, I thought sometimes there might be something interesting happening
00:24:20that you'd know about in advance, and you could tip me off.
00:24:23And then sometimes there'd be favors I could do for you.
00:24:27That's what I would call pretty good planning.
00:24:30Are you interested in money?
00:24:33Fascinated by money and by what money can buy.
00:24:38Did you ever hear of Harry Colton?
00:24:40Who hasn't?
00:24:43He's a one-man crime wife.
00:24:45You've heard of him.
00:24:47Uh, could I have some of that coffee you offer?
00:24:50Sure.
00:24:51I'll get it.
00:24:54Now, Colton is what I call the criminal type.
00:24:58He used to be one of my collectors.
00:25:01But he developed molasses fingers, so I closed them out.
00:25:06And he went off the deep end.
00:25:07You know, he could be dangerous.
00:25:13Might even develop into a menace.
00:25:16Found to kill somebody someday.
00:25:18Might even be a policeman.
00:25:21Well, I'm a photographer.
00:25:22I may be in a rut, but at least it isn't six feet deep.
00:25:26I advised Colton to leave town.
00:25:28But he didn't take my advice.
00:25:30I don't like to use violence.
00:25:34Even against violence.
00:25:36That's where you come in.
00:25:38You'd like to see him framed, is that it?
00:25:41I'd like to see him embarrassed.
00:25:43I happen to know of a pretty big project that Colton is contemplating right now.
00:25:49A robbery.
00:25:50If it comes off, there'll be no stopping him.
00:25:53If he's caught, the police will dispose of him for me.
00:25:56What do you want me to do about it?
00:25:57You're going to take a picture of him committing that robbery and print it in your paper.
00:26:03Wouldn't it be simpler just to tip off the police?
00:26:06That wouldn't be very bright.
00:26:10The word would get around if there was a tip off.
00:26:13Now, if you caught him with your camera, it'd do the trick and look like an accident.
00:26:19You just happen to be passing by?
00:26:21Sure.
00:26:24It'll be worth a couple of grand to me.
00:26:27A thousand now, and a thousand when the picture comes out in your paper.
00:26:33I'm in.
00:26:35Good.
00:26:36I told you he was a smart boy.
00:26:39I'll go get your down payment right now.
00:26:55I'd go for the setup.
00:27:00Nick has everything I like.
00:27:03Including you.
00:27:04Well, if you're as bright as Nick thinks, you can get everything you like.
00:27:13Including you?
00:27:15That's not being bright.
00:27:16How come you married the Daily Double?
00:27:20He's not your type.
00:27:22I don't like to be talked to this way.
00:27:26Sorry.
00:27:27I'm just a growing boy.
00:27:29Well, if you want to continue growing, keep your mind on your camera.
00:27:33Maybe I can't.
00:27:38Come here.
00:27:39Sit down.
00:27:48Now, I want to explain this very carefully.
00:27:52This is the Grant Avenue entrance to the Golden State Department Store.
00:27:57I'll give it to you.
00:28:15Perfect.
00:28:16Now, I've got a goodioKE.
00:28:17Yes, I got a goodio Jay.
00:28:17I won't do that with the Kenney.
00:28:19I'm just Savantiewicz.
00:28:20Hold your Louisiana.
00:28:21I've got a goodio崃.
00:28:22Come here.
00:28:23Come here.
00:28:23Daring daylight robbery of one of the world's largest department stores.
00:28:39The three bandits made their way to the store's vault at the point of guns concealed from everyone except those at whom the weapons were directed.
00:28:45After emptying the vault of its cash, the bulk of which was in bills of small denomination,
00:28:49the three coolly ordered one of the clerks to wrap the money in packages.
00:28:52This done, they then found and gagged the several employees who had contact with them and strolled...
00:28:57Miss Bennett, please.
00:29:01Hello, Ellen. This is your old friend, Aladdin. I've been rubbing that lamp again.
00:29:07I just happened to pass by the Golden State this afternoon, getting a few shots of the afternoon shoppers.
00:29:13Now, wait a minute. Relax. I'll bring them right over to your office.
00:29:18The culprits were hasty in the case of Walter Poole of Oakland, California, floor manager for the Golden State.
00:29:27Poole struggled free of his bond soon after the robbers left and gave chase, only to lose them in the crowds outside the entrance.
00:29:35There are no fingerprints to aid the police in hunting the bandits, but some of the currency taken was in large denominations.
00:29:40The insurance company, when contacted by this commentator, asked me to announce that a reward of $5,000 will be paid for information leading to the capture of the bandits.
00:29:51In all, preliminary guesses put the total loss in the neighborhood of $200,000.
00:29:56This theft takes its place in San Francisco crime annals as one of the most...
00:30:01to have a list asia was above $1,000 is which the
00:30:18well-known goodies net going on from $3,000.
00:30:24To Zahlance population of Johnvin, usually5000%
00:30:26salir on over twenties $1,000,uddle up to $2,000.
00:30:28Let's go.
00:30:58Let's go.
00:31:24You are Aladdin. This is really remarkable.
00:31:28I didn't get their faces.
00:31:30I think that would be too much to ask unless you had known about it in advance.
00:31:34Yeah.
00:31:36I've asked David to give you a byline on this picture, and he's agreed.
00:31:40When the paper hits the streets, Jack, you'll be famous.
00:31:44I'll endorse only the best cold dreams.
00:31:52I don't think I'll be able to keep our date for dinner.
00:31:54Well, I'll be working late tonight, anyhow.
00:31:59I'm sorry, Ellen.
00:32:02That's all right. I understand.
00:32:18Yeah, this could make a lot of trouble for us.
00:32:21But it ain't.
00:32:23You're right, and I'll explain to you why it ain't.
00:32:24Don't explain nothing. I'll show you why.
00:32:30Let's burn this one, too, if that's your idea of fun.
00:32:33I guess you don't know much about photography.
00:32:35As long as I have a negative, I can make as many of those as I want.
00:32:40Okay, you want to sell it to me, is that it?
00:32:43Wrong again.
00:32:44The negative's not for sale.
00:32:45It's kind of a life insurance policy, if you know what I mean.
00:32:49And if anything happens to me, the negative goes to my newspaper and, of course, the cops.
00:32:54Understand?
00:32:54Okay, that's your protection from me. Now, what's my protection from you?
00:32:59You buy your protection from me.
00:33:02I know that. How much?
00:33:04$25,000.
00:33:07Too much.
00:33:08Not for a man that picked up such a big bargain at a department store today.
00:33:12How do I know you're honest?
00:33:15Maybe you'll turn in the negative after I give you the doll.
00:33:17Why would I do that?
00:33:19They'd just make me exchange the $25,000 for a gold medal and a pat on the back.
00:33:26Give it to them, Roy.
00:33:29The money, the money!
00:33:33Count it carefully. If you make a mistake, I'll be back.
00:33:35I'll be back.
00:33:38Some small bills. How do you carry it?
00:33:41Put it in here.
00:33:46Aren't you worried you might lose it on the way home?
00:33:49No, I'm not afraid.
00:33:51If I lose it, I'll just have to come back here for more.
00:33:58Well, I'll say goodbye now.
00:34:00I don't like to overstay my welcome.
00:34:04Wait a minute.
00:34:05You know, there's nothing in our deal that says I can't do with this.
00:34:35I don't have to other people.
00:34:36We're stuck.
00:34:37You're stuck.
00:34:38What do you care, I can't do?
00:34:39I can't do it.
00:34:41Why don't you 저ger people tell me what to now.
00:34:44I wanted to stop.
00:34:44I'll be fine.
00:34:50Let's see if they're still there.
00:34:55When tarkank is this.
00:34:56What does that mean?
00:35:00Oh...
00:35:03For weirk to Varular friends,
00:35:04Look, Mac, I want to do a little shopping.
00:35:21Shirts, ties, shoes, a suit or two.
00:35:24See this suit?
00:35:26Two pairs of pants.
00:35:27My wife hates it.
00:35:29And then again, she hates everything.
00:35:31Especially me.
00:35:32All day long, I wheel this load around bucking traffic.
00:35:36And what does she do?
00:35:37Place can ask.
00:35:39Tell me more.
00:35:41What did you say?
00:35:42Hey!
00:36:02My butler let you in?
00:36:08No, the old crow downstairs. I gave her a couple of bucks.
00:36:13Sure smells in here.
00:36:15It didn't before you got here.
00:36:17You're not very neat, Harry.
00:36:19If that's what you took, you can afford a vacuum cleaner.
00:36:23We checked them all.
00:36:25No, the old crow downstairs. I gave her a couple of bucks.
00:36:29Sure smells in here.
00:36:32It didn't before you got here.
00:36:36You're not very neat, Harry.
00:36:39If that's what you took, you can afford a vacuum cleaner.
00:36:42We checked them all. It's not here.
00:36:44Of course it's not here.
00:36:46As far as you're concerned, that negative's buried in Fort Knox.
00:36:50Well, it was a try.
00:36:52Never get the brass ring unless you reach for it.
00:36:54You're a philosopher.
00:36:55Wagon?
00:36:57Now I suggest you beat it.
00:37:00Answer me one thing. How did you happen to get that picture of us?
00:37:03I don't just happen to do anything.
00:37:06You mean you were tipped off?
00:37:07Of course.
00:37:09Well, there are ways of finding out who tipped you off and...
00:37:11One way of finding out is to ask me.
00:37:14What?
00:37:17Ask me.
00:37:18All right, who?
00:37:21Nick Palmer.
00:37:23Palmer.
00:37:24Well, if you boys will run along, I have a little house-cleaning to do.
00:37:29I'm moving tomorrow and I have to pack.
00:37:33Hey, you think I'm moving in with Nick Palmer?
00:37:36I wouldn't advise it.
00:37:38He's not safe company anymore.
00:37:40Anybody that puts the finger on me is living out borrowed time.
00:37:43I'm not interested in Nick's future or a lack of it.
00:37:45I'm not interested in the news.
00:37:48Oh, Colton.
00:37:50You know, I think you owe me something for that information.
00:37:52Yeah? How much?
00:37:54Well...
00:37:55Let's save this and sit up.
00:37:57Save it.
00:37:58Take good care of that negative.
00:38:00Take good care of that negative.
00:38:09Well, stay early. There's something I'd like to talk to you about.
00:38:11Any time, Thurman. Any time at all.
00:38:12Well, what about right now?
00:38:13Any time at now, that is.
00:38:17You want to see me?
00:38:18Oh, yes, Early. Sit down.
00:38:21You know, I've just figured out that your income is probably larger than your salary.
00:38:26What do you mean?
00:38:27Oh, that robbery exclusive.
00:38:29Paid you a bonus.
00:38:30Twenty-five dollars.
00:38:33Thanks.
00:38:35Thanks a lot.
00:38:37This is going to our new car.
00:38:39I might as well tell you, I hired you reluctantly. I didn't like you.
00:38:44And now?
00:38:45I like your work. You're good for the paper.
00:38:47You're getting to be an important man around here.
00:38:50Well, thanks again.
00:38:52As I was saying, I didn't want to hire you. It was Ellen who talked me into it.
00:38:57Then I'll thank her.
00:38:58Ellen's a wonderful girl.
00:39:01Yes, I know.
00:39:02It's not only that she's one of the most capable people around here, but as a person, she's very fine.
00:39:08You don't have to sell Ellen to me.
00:39:11I'm not trying to.
00:39:12I just want to make sure that you appreciate her as well as I do.
00:39:16I don't know quite how to tell you this. After all, you are my boss.
00:39:23Speak freely.
00:39:24Well, I don't think that what you've been saying is really any of your business at all.
00:39:29I guess you're right.
00:39:34Thanks. Thanks for the check.
00:39:44Hey.
00:39:45Mr. Early is here.
00:39:47Tell him we're busy.
00:39:48I told him you were just about to have dinner, but he said it was very important.
00:40:02All right.
00:40:03Well, let's go into dinner anyway.
00:40:05Oh, you're too clever for me, darling.
00:40:09Oh, you're too clever for me, darling.
00:40:39I like the way you people eat.
00:40:43What was so important?
00:40:45Remember I told you I wanted to make up for not coming through on that Colton deal?
00:40:49Remember I told you that if anything came up, I'd call you?
00:40:52Well, something has come up.
00:40:54I got a tip from the paper.
00:40:55They're gunning for you.
00:40:56Gunning for me?
00:40:58They're always gunning for me.
00:41:00They're going to close up one of your places.
00:41:02The Bay View Club.
00:41:04When is this supposed to happen?
00:41:06Starting tonight.
00:41:06Thanks, Jack.
00:41:14Well, don't you think you ought to go down there and get everybody on their toes?
00:41:18No, I'll just make a phone call.
00:41:24Have you had your dinner?
00:41:26Well, uh, no.
00:41:30You're perfectly welcome to join us if you're free.
00:41:33As a matter of fact, I am.
00:42:05I started at the bottom, but to, uh, follow my progress, you'd have to dig a hole.
00:42:15You're a bright boy.
00:42:16You'll get along.
00:42:21What's the matter?
00:42:22You in a hurry?
00:42:23No, but, uh, don't you think you ought to make that phone call?
00:42:28Yeah.
00:42:28I think I will.
00:42:32Excuse me.
00:42:33I think you ought to make that phone call.
00:42:37Nita, I want it.
00:42:39I hope you've enjoyed Nick's hospitality.
00:42:41Nita, I want to talk to you.
00:42:42You have been very nice and fairly quiet all during dinner.
00:42:46I find I like you better that way.
00:42:49I've said this so many times without meaning it.
00:42:51Look, Nita, you've got to believe me.
00:42:53This isn't just conversation.
00:42:55This is the real thing.
00:42:56Look, why don't you...
00:42:57Don't bother to apologize.
00:43:09Just get out.
00:43:11Nita, listen to me.
00:43:12Please, just go.
00:43:13You're afraid of Nick.
00:43:17That's it, isn't it?
00:43:18No.
00:43:20I love Nick.
00:43:22You don't seem to be able to understand.
00:43:24Don't hand me that.
00:43:26What can Nick mean to you?
00:43:28A pair of dice that reads seven, first class in the Queen Elizabeth, Miami in the winter?
00:43:32Yes, this you can understand.
00:43:36But it means much more than that to me.
00:43:40And this you will never understand.
00:43:44You're afraid of him.
00:43:51Goodbye.
00:44:02I'm sorry I'm late, Al.
00:44:29Don't be angry.
00:44:30But you're two hours late.
00:44:31I know, and I'm very sorry.
00:44:34Why didn't you call me?
00:44:37Ellen, please.
00:44:40You look so tired, Jack.
00:44:42I am.
00:44:45I've been out in the jungle hunting.
00:44:51You're an idiot, you know.
00:44:53You've ruined my stew.
00:44:56Does that mean I have to marry you?
00:44:57I refuse.
00:44:58I wouldn't marry you if you were the last man on earth.
00:45:05Unless you ask me.
00:45:06Matrimony is a state I don't recognize.
00:45:10It's not love.
00:45:11It's pots and pans and a conversational fist fight every Saturday night with a paycheck as the purse.
00:45:19Say, something's missing in here.
00:45:20From the chest?
00:45:21From the chest?
00:45:23That's right, the dentist.
00:45:25What did you do with this picture?
00:45:27I felt guilty looking at it.
00:45:29You didn't throw it away.
00:45:30No.
00:45:32It's in the drawer.
00:45:34Never throw old bows away, Ellen.
00:45:37Save them all and make a quilt.
00:45:39Come on.
00:45:46Sit down.
00:45:47I'll be right with you.
00:45:48You must be half-starved by now.
00:45:52You haven't eaten yet, have you?
00:45:54Oh, no, no.
00:45:55Come on.
00:46:25Carl.
00:46:26Yeah.
00:46:28Look, when Jack earlier gets here, tell...
00:46:32Never mind.
00:46:39I've been waiting for you, Jack.
00:46:41I got your message at the paper.
00:46:42At least I guess it was from you.
00:46:44Of course it was me.
00:46:44Who'd you think it was?
00:46:45Oh, I couldn't be sure.
00:46:46You didn't leave your name.
00:46:47Think I should have?
00:46:48I guess not.
00:46:49What's it all about, Nick?
00:46:52Something important has come up.
00:46:53Could be very profitable to you.
00:46:55What is it?
00:46:55This could mean real money to you.
00:46:57That's the kind I like.
00:46:59Maybe 5,000.
00:47:00I've got to leave.
00:47:07Walk out with me.
00:47:09I can't explain everything to you right now,
00:47:10but come to my apartment tonight.
00:47:12I may be working.
00:47:13I can't be sure when I can get away.
00:47:14You're there before 9, can't you?
00:47:15I think so.
00:47:22Be sure you get there before 9.
00:47:24What's so special about 9?
00:47:28I got a call.
00:47:30I don't know what it's about,
00:47:31but it seems important.
00:47:33Hour of time.
00:47:35What?
00:47:36Nothing.
00:47:38So I've got to leave at 9 sharp.
00:47:40Tonight?
00:47:41Of course tonight.
00:47:42I mean tonight.
00:47:43Didn't you understand I was talking about tonight?
00:47:45Yes, yes, I'll be there.
00:47:46All right.
00:48:00Long time.
00:48:15Long time.
00:48:31Let's go.
00:49:01Let's go.
00:49:31Let's go.
00:50:01Let's go.
00:50:31I'm afraid I can't wait.
00:50:33I never thought early it'd be late when it came to money.
00:50:35You've done a beautiful job of messing me up.
00:50:38Now I'm afraid you'd better take care.
00:50:40Well, all right, dear.
00:50:41Bye.
00:51:01I'm sorry.
00:51:03I'm sorry.
00:51:09Here's the thing.
00:51:10I'm sorry.
00:51:11I'm sorry.
00:51:11I'm sorry.
00:51:12I'm sorry.
00:51:13Come on.
00:51:43There's nothing.
00:51:46Are you trying to tell me that it's no good?
00:51:48No, my question is, is it too good?
00:51:52Look, the police have my story.
00:51:54They questioned me again this morning.
00:51:55I've told it over and over again.
00:51:57I had an appointment with Nick.
00:51:59He never did tell me what it was all about.
00:52:01I was late.
00:52:02I tried to catch him in the garage.
00:52:04When I got there, the car was smoking.
00:52:06A couple of seconds later, the bomb went off.
00:52:09Composition, lighting, focus, all perfect.
00:52:14Listen.
00:52:18You may not believe this, but I'm allergic to bombs.
00:52:22If I even suspect that I'm in the same room with one, I can't help it.
00:52:26I just have to leave.
00:52:28Funny, I feel the same way when I'm in the room with a liar.
00:52:32However you got it, it was just about the greatest news photo ever snapped.
00:52:36Life and Time are reprinting it.
00:52:37Our future syndicates got a beautiful contract for you.
00:52:41From now on, you're out of the snake pit.
00:52:43Only special assignments.
00:52:45Mother told me there'd be moments like this.
00:52:48Don't kid me, Ernie.
00:52:49You never had a mother.
00:52:52You were put together in some machine shop.
00:52:54You can think, but you can't feel.
00:52:56You're stepping all over people and climbing all over them to get to the top.
00:53:01You're no good.
00:53:03You're no good at all.
00:53:05And you're green with envy, Glover.
00:53:07You've got no guts.
00:53:10You don't hate me because of any photographs I took.
00:53:13You hate me because of Ellen.
00:53:16You're in love with her.
00:53:18You've been in love with her for years,
00:53:19but you haven't got nerve enough to come out from behind your desk.
00:53:22You're in love with her for years, but you haven't got nerve enough to come out from behind your desk.
00:53:26Run away, Glover.
00:53:27The truth hurts.
00:53:32David, how is he?
00:53:33Oh, he's as good as he ever was.
00:53:35He'll be out in a few days.
00:53:36Did he sign the contract?
00:53:37No.
00:53:38Did you talk about it?
00:53:39Well, sort of.
00:53:40I'll discuss it with him when he gets out.
00:53:42Did you tell him what's involved?
00:53:44No, I didn't.
00:53:45And I'd rather that you didn't either.
00:53:48I have to be going, Ellen.
00:53:50I'll see you later.
00:53:56Hello, baby.
00:53:59I wondered when you'd be around.
00:54:01Oh, I came the first moment I could.
00:54:03I rubbed that lamp a little too hard this time.
00:54:06It blew up in my kisser.
00:54:08It's a miracle you weren't killed.
00:54:09How do you feel?
00:54:10Great.
00:54:11Sit down.
00:54:14Jack, that palm of picture's causing so much talk.
00:54:17I spent the entire morning turning down magazine offers for you.
00:54:21I've had offers?
00:54:22At least ten.
00:54:23I love being able to tell them to go jump in the lake.
00:54:26Hey, wait a minute.
00:54:28Our publisher was terribly impressed.
00:54:31If those offers are on that level.
00:54:32He told David to sign you to a feature contract matching the best of the offers.
00:54:36I don't want a contract.
00:54:38I think I can do better now playing the field.
00:54:40Well, there's a little more to it than that.
00:54:43They had quite a talk.
00:54:45He sort of implied that if David didn't get you, he might lose his job.
00:54:49Well, it's too bad for David because I'm not signing.
00:54:51Jack.
00:54:53I'm not signing with anyone.
00:54:56The way I figure it, I can cash in more on that picture if I freelance.
00:54:59But David gave you your first break.
00:55:02I earned what I got.
00:55:04I don't need to feel grateful to anybody.
00:55:07Darling, it's only a one-year contract.
00:55:10I can't spare the time.
00:55:11Jack, I hate to ask you this, but for me, Jack, it's a matter of decency.
00:55:27Decency is another word that goes with it.
00:55:30Integrity.
00:55:32Look, Ellen.
00:55:33I've known a lot of guys that talked about decency and integrity.
00:55:37I knew a guy once.
00:55:39A wonderful old man.
00:55:40A genius with a camera.
00:55:42He used to take pictures of trees and clouds and children playing in the sands at Ocean Beach.
00:55:48He tried to show me the beauty he saw in people and the world.
00:55:51He was a great man, Ellen.
00:55:54And there were others.
00:55:55Guys with paintbrushes, guys with typewriters.
00:55:58I even knew one who had a butcher shop.
00:56:00And you know what?
00:56:02They all starved to death.
00:56:04Decency and integrity are fancy words, Ellen, but they never kept anybody well-fed.
00:56:10And I've got quite an appetite.
00:56:13Yes, I'll see.
00:56:38Mater.
00:56:40I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am.
00:56:43Thanks for sending all those messages of sympathy.
00:56:48I guess I know better than most what Nick meant to you.
00:56:52And I can appreciate better than most what you meant to Nick.
00:56:56That's a nice speech I've heard all week.
00:57:00Nita, if there's anything I can do.
00:57:02Money or anything.
00:57:04Nick didn't exactly leave me penniless.
00:57:07I'm trying to offer my friendship, Nita.
00:57:10He didn't leave me friendless, either.
00:57:12I'm no longer with the paper.
00:57:17And I find myself a big-time photographer, all because of that picture.
00:57:23It was a miracle that I happened to take a picture of Nick at that moment.
00:57:29And I read all about it in the papers.
00:57:32I had an appointment with Nick, and I was late.
00:57:36I know.
00:57:39I feel like a ghoul.
00:57:40I feel guilty somehow.
00:57:44There's no need for you to feel guilty.
00:57:45It's not as if you were responsible for Nick's death.
00:57:51I have several assignments that'll take me out of the country.
00:57:54When I get back, I want...
00:57:55I want you to call on me if you need help for anything.
00:58:01All right, Jack.
00:58:05If I ever need you, I'll call for help.
00:58:12Goodbye, Jack.
00:58:13Goodbye, Jack.
00:58:43Okay, hold on.
00:58:46All right, fellas.
00:58:47Good evening, Mr. Early.
00:59:15Glad to have you back.
00:59:19Thanks, Seth.
00:59:19It's good to be back.
00:59:28I saw your pictures of China, and look, they were simply terrible.
00:59:31No, I mean wonderful.
00:59:32You know what I mean.
00:59:33I know what you mean, darling.
00:59:35And I thank you.
00:59:35And thank you for the bracelet.
00:59:56But you're not wearing it.
01:00:00It doesn't go very well with what I'm wearing tonight.
01:00:03But it is very nice.
01:00:05And very expensive.
01:00:07Yes.
01:00:08What do I have to do to make you understand how I feel about you?
01:00:14Rob a bank?
01:00:15I think you made yourself clear.
01:00:18Then why don't you do something about it?
01:00:19I am.
01:00:21Good evening, Mrs. Palmer.
01:00:22Nice to see you.
01:00:23Oh, good evening, Mrs. Spencer.
01:00:25Mr. Spencer.
01:00:26Good evening.
01:00:28What beautiful pearls.
01:00:31Very few people recognize natural pearls as quickly as you do.
01:00:35You get to know the things you love best.
01:00:38And pearls have always been a great favorite of mine.
01:00:41Oh, I want to...
01:00:42Excuse me.
01:00:52Hello, Orly.
01:00:54Oh, hello.
01:00:56Why didn't you return my call?
01:00:58I got tired of it.
01:01:00It's a big spread my magazine wants, Orly.
01:01:02A room-by-room layout of the Worthington Mansion.
01:01:04In coverage of the big charity ball to be held there.
01:01:07I'd do a layout of a flea party and a bowery flop bus
01:01:10if there's enough money in it.
01:01:11But you won't pay the fare.
01:01:13We're offering you our top rates.
01:01:15The top's too low.
01:01:17Are pearls expensive?
01:01:19What?
01:01:20Never mind.
01:01:21The Worthingtons are one of the most important families in the country.
01:01:24At that ball, we'll be a concentration of the wealthiest families in the country.
01:01:27Yeah, I know.
01:01:28Great contacts.
01:01:29I mean wealthy in a way you don't know.
01:01:32By just the jewelry that'll be worn that night
01:01:35will represent millions of dollars.
01:01:39That's wealthy in a way I don't know.
01:01:41And you can arrange a schedule to suit yourself.
01:01:43So long as the layout of the house is done in time
01:01:45to run it with the coverage of the ball.
01:01:48The Worthingtons will be very cooperative.
01:01:52Any other photographers?
01:01:54Exclusive coverage by Jack Early.
01:01:56All right.
01:01:59Wonderful.
01:02:00Wonderful.
01:02:19All right, chef.
01:02:22Well, look who's here!
01:02:23Yeah, he's changed.
01:02:30Hello, Glover.
01:02:31Well, Mr. Early.
01:02:34I see you're still wearing that vest.
01:02:36Would you like me to tell you why I'm still here?
01:02:39Not particularly.
01:02:40Maybe some other time.
01:02:41Where's Ellen?
01:02:43She's away for the weekend.
01:02:45I believe she met in Portland.
01:02:47Portland?
01:02:48Yes, Portland.
01:02:50Nice place.
01:02:51Nice people.
01:02:53But she'll be back Monday.
01:02:55She'll be back Monday.
01:02:56But I'm afraid...
01:02:57Bye, Glover!
01:02:57Mr. Early, I'm sorry I can't show you the rest of the house myself.
01:03:13I hadn't expected you today.
01:03:15Oh, I guess I shouldn't have come on Sunday.
01:03:17I can come back tomorrow.
01:03:18Perhaps one of the servants can show you through the house.
01:03:20That would be fine.
01:03:21Oh, uh, Mrs. Worthington.
01:03:23If it's all right with you, I'd like to wander around alone
01:03:26and sort of get the feel of the place.
01:03:27That sounds very sensible.
01:03:29I'll tell everyone you're to have free run of the house.
01:03:31Will you excuse me?
01:03:32Of course.
01:04:08Ellen.
01:04:10I've been trying to reach you.
01:04:14I haven't wanted to see you long before this,
01:04:16but I've been so busy.
01:04:18Forgive me?
01:04:19Jack, I'm very tired.
01:04:24Please, Ellen.
01:04:32Trains always tire me, and I haven't eaten since noon.
01:04:36Have dinner with me, Ellen.
01:04:38No, I think I'll just take what I can find here
01:04:40and fall right into bed.
01:04:42Please, Ellen.
01:04:45I must talk to you.
01:04:46It's a matter of life or death.
01:04:49It's been so long since we've seen each other.
01:05:04I've missed you, Ellen.
01:05:05I didn't miss you at all.
01:05:09What was this life or death matter you wanted to speak to me about?
01:05:12I just wanted to talk to you, Ellen.
01:05:15It's been so long.
01:05:26I've missed you enormously, Ellen.
01:05:29I found Europe as empty as a paper bag.
01:05:32Nothing but cafes, cathedrals, hotels,
01:05:37and people selling each other their crown jewels.
01:05:46Well, I guess you're tired.
01:05:48Maybe we ought to save this for some other time.
01:05:50As long as you're here, there are a few things I'd like to say.
01:05:59I...
01:06:00I spent the weekend in Portland.
01:06:04Yes, I know.
01:06:06How is your dentist?
01:06:07It's all over.
01:06:09It has been for some time.
01:06:11I just went up there to make it official and clean.
01:06:17Do you remember my telling you that David would lose his job if you didn't sign that contract?
01:06:24Yes, but he didn't lose it.
01:06:25He's still there.
01:06:26He told the publisher if you remained on the paper, he'd quit anyway.
01:06:33He said that people like you were bad for the whole profession of journalism.
01:06:36Our publisher agreed with him.
01:06:42David said you were a ruthless opportunist.
01:06:45With no feeling for anyone but yourself.
01:06:48He said that you would inevitably get into trouble you couldn't get out of,
01:06:52and that you'd probably drag a lot of people down with you.
01:06:56What are you trying to tell me?
01:06:57That Glover doesn't like me?
01:06:59I knew that the first day I met him.
01:07:01I'm trying to tell you that David is right.
01:07:03I'm telling you in the slight hope that you might listen to him and think about it.
01:07:10I don't believe in that kind of thinking.
01:07:12David makes a lot of sense, Jack.
01:07:14You'd do well to listen to him.
01:07:17Sure he makes sense.
01:07:20He's trying to poison your mind against me because he's in love with you.
01:07:24Oh, Jack.
01:07:27You'd better go.
01:07:30I might as well.
01:07:30I might as well.
01:07:33And Jack, please, don't come here anymore.
01:07:40You'll change your mind.
01:07:43We've been too close.
01:07:47Precisely.
01:07:48What do you want?
01:08:10The world on a platter, the Italian Riviera, gin rummy at a dollar a point.
01:08:14In other words, money.
01:08:17Yeah, you've got all you're going to get from us.
01:08:19Beat it.
01:08:19Take it easy, Harry.
01:08:20This time I'm giving, not taking.
01:08:23Pay attention to me, and the first thing you know, you can throw away your gun.
01:08:28Exhibit A.
01:08:30The Worthington estate.
01:08:31Bedrooms, grounds, the works.
01:08:34Exhibit B.
01:08:35Floor plan of the ballroom, showing the disposition of the armed guards.
01:08:39I don't go in for this, and you know it.
01:08:43Exhibit C.
01:08:45Six especially engraved invitations.
01:08:48They'll roll out the red carpet for you and your boys, Harry.
01:08:50And you can use it to wrap up the million dollars worth of jewelry that'll come staggering in under.
01:08:57I thought that would interest you.
01:09:00Incidentally, there's a wall safe in that panel in the library, if you have time for it.
01:09:05Okay, I'm interested.
01:09:10What's the deal on this?
01:09:12Well, since I'm only planning it, and you're carrying it out, I won't be greedy.
01:09:16Let's say, uh, 25 percent.
01:09:20For you and your boys.
01:09:22You think we're worth it?
01:09:24Go on, get out of here before I throw you out.
01:09:30I, uh, think I can persuade you to change your mind.
01:09:35Well, if you change the deal, I'll change my mind.
01:09:39What do you mean, change the deal?
01:09:41Make it 50-50 instead of 75-25.
01:09:49All right. 50-50.
01:09:54What about that one?
01:09:55We won't be needing this one now.
01:09:58I've got some more groundwork to do.
01:10:00Study those pictures very carefully.
01:10:02I'll check with you later.
01:10:03This looks like a push-over, Harry.
01:10:08Everything's laid down laps.
01:10:09Yeah.
01:10:11There's only one thing I don't like about it.
01:10:13Really?
01:10:16Harry, maybe I should...
01:10:18Nothing doing.
01:10:20I'll take a chance on that negative he's got getting into the wrong hands, but...
01:10:24I don't know if a newspaper man just isn't being done this season.
01:10:26Unless...
01:10:29Give me the number to beg you, club.
01:10:35Come in.
01:10:51Oh, Jack, darling.
01:10:56The pearls are beautiful.
01:10:58I was beginning to think this bout would end in a draw.
01:11:01Listen, baby.
01:11:03I'm coming into an awful lot of money in the next few days, so get your passport in order.
01:11:07Get vases for Italy, England, and France.
01:11:10We'll have a lot of fun together.
01:11:11You can show me the real Paris.
01:11:12We'll visit your hometown.
01:11:14Chartres...
01:11:14Chartres.
01:11:17Chartres.
01:11:17I can never say it the way you do.
01:11:21What's the matter, darling?
01:11:24It's been some time since Nick's death.
01:11:28Yes.
01:11:29Time enough for the police to close the case.
01:11:33Time enough for everyone to have forgotten Nick.
01:11:36I haven't forgotten him.
01:11:38That's why I've waited as long as I have.
01:11:41Nita, I want to marry you.
01:11:44Don't say no, Nita.
01:11:46Don't make up your mind tonight.
01:11:47Think it over.
01:11:50I'll think it over.
01:11:55I'll let you know, Jack.
01:12:12Thanks, Charlie.
01:12:17I'm Harry Colton.
01:12:33I know.
01:12:35Nick and me weren't friends.
01:12:37I know.
01:12:37I thought he was the kind of a guy.
01:12:39Well, regular-like.
01:12:41You know what I mean.
01:12:42Look, Colton.
01:12:43Suppose you tell me what this is all about.
01:12:46It's like I said.
01:12:47I wasn't in love with Nick, and Nick wasn't in love with me.
01:12:50So you can put this down as a grudge.
01:12:51I'm here to tell you who killed him.
01:12:53Go on.
01:12:56Go on.
01:12:56A photographer.
01:12:58You know who I mean.
01:12:58Is this an idea of yours, or have you any proof?
01:13:05Proof is for lawyers.
01:13:07He did it.
01:13:07That's all there is to it.
01:13:08Tell me something.
01:13:10How do you happen to know Early?
01:13:12Is it because of that hold-up picture in the papers?
01:13:15No, the one that wasn't in the papers.
01:13:18Early got our faces that day.
01:13:20He just happened to be passing by.
01:13:22He came to see us, and I still feel that visit in my pocketbook.
01:13:25So that's the way it was.
01:13:29But he said...
01:13:31Oh, if I were sure, I...
01:13:34Hey, wait a minute.
01:13:36I don't want what I told you to get you into trouble.
01:13:40Now, Nick was smart about these things.
01:13:42Oh, Nick. Nick.
01:13:45I still can't figure out why you wanted to get rid of Nick.
01:13:48I can.
01:13:50I can.
01:13:52Take it easy, Mrs. Palmer.
01:13:53I'd like to fix it myself because of what he did to me.
01:13:57But it's got to be done right.
01:13:59Colton, you can help me.
01:14:02You know about such things.
01:14:04Well, Early can't have me with a deal today.
01:14:07Will you help me?
01:14:08That's what I'm talking about.
01:14:10But it'll have to be timed.
01:14:12We'll have to work out everything very carefully.
01:14:15Now, there's this ball at the Worthington mansion.
01:14:19Near the ballroom is a library.
01:14:20This should be the library.
01:14:45Yes, it is.
01:14:46Yes.
01:14:46Yes.
01:14:46Yes.
01:14:46Yes.
01:14:46Yes.
01:14:46Yes.
01:14:47Yes.
01:14:47Yes.
01:14:47Yes.
01:14:47Yes.
01:14:48Yes.
01:14:48Yes.
01:14:49Yes.
01:14:49Yes.
01:14:54Now, I'd like one of the two of you standing at the top of the staircase about to make an entrance.
01:15:04Mrs. Palmer's in the library.
01:15:06Nina?
01:15:19I wanted to give you my answer, Jack.
01:15:34Later.
01:15:35You have about fifteen minutes.
01:15:36What are you talking about?
01:15:50You wouldn't understand.
01:15:52It has nothing to do with big cars and expensive jewels.
01:16:05Anita, you're crazy.
01:16:06I didn't...
01:16:07You didn't what?
01:16:08Anita, I love you.
01:16:09There's nothing I wouldn't do for you.
01:16:10There's nothing I wouldn't do for you.
01:16:12Nothing I haven't done for you.
01:16:13You and I are the only ones who didn't forget Nick.
01:16:17Me, because I loved him.
01:16:19And you, because you killed him.
01:16:22Anita, I didn't kill Nick.
01:16:24Are you out of your mind?
01:16:26If you kill me, you'll be caught and it'll be all for nothing.
01:16:29I didn't kill Nick.
01:16:31Colton's man brought me.
01:16:33And he'll pick me up right there, after Colton's business is finished.
01:16:38Colton?
01:16:39Yes, Colton.
01:16:40We timed you right into your own plan.
01:16:43It was Colton that killed Nick.
01:16:45Don't you see, Anita?
01:16:46You're being tricked.
01:16:47Don't you see?
01:16:48Yes, I see.
01:16:50I can prove I didn't do it.
01:16:52I can prove it.
01:16:53Go ahead.
01:16:54Prove it.
01:16:55Let me make a call.
01:16:56I can have something brought out here that'll prove it wasn't Nick.
01:16:58I can get it here in 10 minutes.
01:17:00Let me call.
01:17:01All right.
01:17:03Go ahead.
01:17:04But don't do anything silly.
01:17:15Oh, oh, excuse me.
01:17:20Hello?
01:17:23Yes, I know.
01:17:24Listen to me.
01:17:25This is terribly important.
01:17:27I'm at the Worthingham Estate in Burlingame.
01:17:29I want you to get into a cab and bring me that picture that's on the mantelpiece.
01:17:32You know, the dentist.
01:17:34Please don't ask any questions, Ellen.
01:17:36Just believe me when I tell you it's a matter of life or death.
01:17:39I'm sorry, Jack.
01:17:41We're having a birthday party here for David.
01:17:43Please, Ellen.
01:17:44I've got to have that picture.
01:17:45I hid something behind it.
01:17:46If you don't get into a cab and...
01:17:48Jack, you're being silly.
01:17:49Don't you understand?
01:17:50My days of catering to your whims are over.
01:17:53Ellen, for the love of...
01:17:54If you ever cared anything about me.
01:17:57I'm sorry, Jack.
01:17:58I just can't.
01:17:59Ellen!
01:18:00Well?
01:18:01Well?
01:18:02Well?
01:18:04No!
01:18:05No!
01:18:06No!
01:18:07No!
01:18:08No!
01:18:09No!
01:18:10No!
01:18:11No!
01:18:12No! No! No!
01:18:16No! No! No!
01:18:42Here it is, and it's a honey.
01:18:52Where's that new kid, the one who covered the ball?
01:18:56Keller?
01:18:58It's a good picture.
01:19:01Yes, sir?
01:19:02Let's hear your lead.
01:19:04Shortly before midnight last night at the Worthington charity ball,
01:19:08Jack Early, world-renowned photographer.
01:19:11In a magnificent display of courage,
01:19:14foiled a robbery attempt and went to his death,
01:19:17photographing his own murderer in the act as he died.
01:19:26All right. You were there.
01:19:28Thanks, Mr. Glover.
01:19:35It's a great picture.
01:19:38And I'll bet for the first time he really just happened to be passing by.
01:20:01THE END
