Die Sister, Die! (also known as The Companion) is a 1978 American thriller film directed by Randall Hood. Starring Jack Ging, Edith Atwater and Antoinette Bower.

Storyline:
Edward (Jack Ging) a disturbed and tormented man, is tired of the "allowance" granted him by his reclusive and senile sister Amanda (Edith Atwater) and becomes impatient for her death and his inheritance. To hasten her demise, or at least stop her suicides from being thwarted, Edward hires Esther (Antoinette Bower), a discredited ex-nurse, to watch over her. Esther is less than enthusiastic about killing the old woman, and curious about the secrets that are held in the gothic mansion and the eerie secret in the basement, including a mysterious third sister, Nell.

00:02:19Amanda!
00:02:24Amanda!
00:02:42She's stuck.
00:02:59Sometimes even suicide takes a little know-how.
00:03:18Oh, damn, damn, damn, damn!
00:03:30Amanda...
00:03:35Amanda...
00:03:36You...
00:03:36You must...
00:03:42Amanda, it's...
00:03:44It's your brother, Edward.
00:03:45Get out!
00:03:47Get out!
00:03:48Get out!
00:03:50Get out!
00:03:52Get out!
00:04:00Miss Price, in a moment I'm going to give you a sedative, but before I do...
00:04:07Isn't there...
00:04:08Isn't there something you'd like to tell me?
00:04:11Whatever it is, it can't be as dreadful as what you've just tried to do.
00:04:17I want to die.
00:04:19I...
00:04:22I...
00:04:22I nearly made it, didn't I, Doctor?
00:04:25You're alive, Miss Price.
00:04:28Do what the rest of us do.
00:04:31Make the best of you...
00:04:34Make the best of it.
00:04:56Make the best of it.
00:05:02I figured you could use this, Dr. Bourbon, if I remember.
00:05:10Why, Doctor?
00:05:15Well, that was precisely the question I was going to ask you.
00:05:19You know, that was quite a hostile display.
00:05:22And you've no idea why.
00:05:27No, I...
00:05:28Well, I was never on Amanda's A-list.
00:05:35You know, thinking back, though...
00:05:38She used to always set me up against father.
00:05:44He was quite a man, your father.
00:05:46Well, let's just say that he was a hard act to follow.
00:05:52You know, it's odd.
00:05:54Until he died...
00:05:57Amanda was one of the steadiest women in the world.
00:05:59She was like a rock.
00:06:01Amanda was very attached to your father?
00:06:03Oh, yeah, very.
00:06:06Yeah, she did everything for him.
00:06:08She managed the house, she...
00:06:10Everything.
00:06:12Would your sister accept hospitalization?
00:06:16The mental hospital?
00:06:17With her consent, of course.
00:06:20Well, it's a pity.
00:06:21A woman doesn't try to take a life twice in a single year
00:06:24without some deep emotional disturbance.
00:06:28Right now, a therapist might get through very quickly.
00:06:30He might get her to reveal the cause of that inner anxiety.
00:06:36You mean...
00:06:37Like a confession?
00:06:38Call it that if you wish.
00:06:40Oh, good God, Doctor.
00:06:42What could Amanda possibly have to confess?
00:06:45Possibly. Only a thought.
00:06:47An impulse.
00:06:48A feeling.
00:06:49An impulse she's never acted upon.
00:06:51But anyway, she feels guilty and she represses it.
00:06:54But it's still there, like some sort of monstrous secret.
00:06:58And it frightens her.
00:07:04Well, there may be a companion in the house.
00:07:07Maybe that would help.
00:07:08What about your younger sister, Nell?
00:07:10I remember her staying here for a short while before your father died.
00:07:14Wouldn't she be willing to come back for a while, at least?
00:07:18But not Nell.
00:07:20Nell has never thought about anybody in the world but herself.
00:07:23No.
00:07:25Not her.
00:07:26Well, clearly something has to be done.
00:07:28Otherwise, there's nothing to prevent your sister from having a third try.
00:07:33And succeeding.
00:07:35Now, Doctor, what about a professional?
00:07:38An experienced nurse?
00:07:41You think Amanda would agree?
00:07:42Well, if her only choice was a mental hospital, she'd have to, wouldn't she?
00:07:47Do it, Edward.
00:07:48Do it now.
00:07:51Meanwhile...
00:07:53You get some rest.
00:07:56You're carrying quite a load yourself.
00:07:59Thank you, Doctor.
00:08:02Good night.
00:08:46Last call.
00:08:47Do you want another?
00:08:50If you'll have one with me.
00:08:52Sorry, sir, if it's conversation you're looking for, the other girls have left.
00:08:57Maybe later.
00:08:59Look, I'm just the waitress from 62, 87.50 a week and tips.
00:09:04It's good here.
00:09:06Do you want another drink?
00:09:09You know, with your qualifications, I think you could do better, Miss Harper.
00:09:14How do you know my name?
00:09:17I understand you were a pretty good nurse.
00:09:19Nurse?
00:09:21If I were a nurse, what would I be doing here?
00:09:29Maybe these have something to do with it.
00:09:47What are you? You a reporter?
00:09:49Not at all.
00:09:51What do you want from me?
00:09:53I might be able to offer you a job, but I have to know about this.
00:09:57I mean, now, you surely didn't marry a 90-year-old man for love.
00:10:03Now, you listen to me.
00:10:05For years, I looked after that old man.
00:10:07I was his nurse, his friend, the only person in the world that he could talk to.
00:10:11His family never even came to see him.
00:10:14His family never even came to see him.
00:10:14They were just waiting for him to die.
00:10:15And you?
00:10:17He wanted to give me something, the only thing that he could, which is money.
00:10:21So he married me to do it.
00:10:23I see.
00:10:24The family took you to court and cheated you out of it.
00:10:30You know, I guess it's been pretty hard to get a job with all the publicity.
00:10:34I mean, like this place.
00:10:40What kind of a job are you offering?
00:10:44I have a sick relative.
00:10:49She's going to need very special care.
00:10:51And what would it pay?
00:10:53$25,000.
00:10:58Let's check.
00:10:59Here's my card with my phone number in it.
00:11:02And keep the change.
00:11:12Here's my card.
00:12:06Mr. Price?
00:12:08Come in, Miss Harper.
00:12:14I've been expecting you.
00:12:17Since I talked to you yesterday on the phone, I've been thinking.
00:12:22I'm still not sure.
00:12:23I know so little.
00:12:25But you did bring your suitcase, and that's the beginning.
00:12:28Sit down.
00:12:30Obviously, I couldn't discuss everything on the phone.
00:12:33You see, the person involved happens to be my sister, Amanda Price.
00:12:39She's the patient.
00:12:41She had a mental breakdown, and, well, she's still a little erratic.
00:12:46I have to have someone with her.
00:12:47I was hoping that you had had dealings with disturbed people.
00:12:50Occasionally.
00:12:52Okay.
00:12:55What would you expect of me?
00:12:58Not much, really.
00:13:00I have a housekeeper that comes in twice a week.
00:13:02Mrs. Gonzalez.
00:13:03You like her.
00:13:03She's been in the family for years.
00:13:06Amanda's alone a lot.
00:13:07She doesn't go out very much, and I want you to stay with her.
00:13:11The main thing I want from you is I have to know everything that goes on in the house.
00:13:19Amanda's mind, the way it is.
00:13:21There's certain family affairs that I don't really want other people to know about.
00:13:27No other duties.
00:13:32Amanda, in the last two years, has tried to kill herself two different times.
00:13:40She will certainly try a third.
00:13:46And if she does?
00:13:54She mustn't fail.
00:13:57How would I be paid?
00:14:05Well, I...
00:14:06I think it's better at first to pay your regular nurse's salary.
00:14:13Well, within ten days of my sister's death, I will deliver to you in cash $25,000.
00:14:18Well, I'll do well.
00:14:32Hush.
00:14:33You're lucky I'm here at all.
00:14:37Yeah.
00:14:40Eat, drink and be merry.
00:14:42But tomorrow always comes.
00:15:02We're getting old, Jethro.
00:15:05You in your cage.
00:15:08And I in mine.
00:15:12Come, invaders.
00:15:13Keep a civil tongue, Jethro.
00:15:16We must make a good impression.
00:15:25Amanda.
00:15:26Edward.
00:15:28Amanda, this is, uh, Esther Harper.
00:15:31So I see.
00:15:33Edward, you needn't remain.
00:15:34I think Miss Harper and I can best get acquainted by ourselves.
00:15:38As you wish, Amanda dear.
00:15:40Thank you, Mr. Price.
00:15:42I'll be in touch.
00:15:47And now, Miss Harper.
00:15:49Please call me, Esther.
00:15:51Very well.
00:15:52First, I'd like to introduce you to the oldest document of the house, Jethro.
00:15:57I'd like you to say hello to our new housekeeper.
00:16:00Or is it, Covenants?
00:16:02I'm a registered nurse, Miss Price.
00:16:04Yes.
00:16:05Yes, a nurse.
00:16:07Now, why would I need a nurse, Esther?
00:16:11Surely you know that better than I?
00:16:15Perhaps not.
00:16:17Certainly my esteemed brother must have filled you in on all the choice details.
00:16:21My, uh, mental instability, my suicidal impulses.
00:16:25Not really, no.
00:16:27Well, I do gather that there isn't much affection between you.
00:16:32Now, that should be an item for your nurse's notebook.
00:16:36I assume you're going to keep one.
00:16:39Madam is cheerful.
00:16:41Madam is moody.
00:16:42Madam had a bad night.
00:16:44Madam ate her porridge.
00:16:47And to whom, pray, do you expect to report all this delectable gossip?
00:16:51My brother?
00:16:52Dr. Thorne?
00:16:54I didn't intend to keep notes.
00:16:57Oh, come now.
00:16:58My brother, with Dr. Thorne's connivance, hired you against my will.
00:17:03You don't expect me to believe that you're not here to spy on me.
00:17:06Why?
00:17:07You're their Trojan horse.
00:17:11Don't play games with me, Esther.
00:17:13I play for keys.
00:17:19Miss Price, I'm here simply to help you, if you'll let me.
00:17:26Good.
00:17:27I'll show you about.
00:17:29This is an old house, Esther.
00:17:31Set in its ways.
00:17:33Nothing is to be moved or changed.
00:17:36I dine in here.
00:17:38I have breakfast and lunch in the parlour.
00:17:42I like things, Esther.
00:17:45Not people.
00:17:46Things are far less dangerous.
00:17:48Treat them properly and they do what they're supposed to do.
00:17:52How old are you?
00:17:56I'm 38.
00:17:58I think you could be pretty if you tried.
00:18:01I don't think about it much.
00:18:03I thought all women did.
00:18:05Miss Price, I have worked for a living all my life.
00:18:08Now, since there's no excuse.
00:18:10A pretty face brings in treasure.
00:18:12So I've learned.
00:18:14Come.
00:18:21This is my room.
00:18:23I've chosen to give you the room adjoining mine.
00:18:26It was my sister's.
00:18:27Until she went away.
00:18:31My sister liked pretty things, including herself.
00:18:35You'll have no trouble in finding mirrors.
00:18:37I'm sure I'll be very comfortable.
00:18:40In the future, I should like the dinner promptly at seven.
00:18:43You may dine with me at the table if you wish.
00:18:55Miss Price, this cupboard still seems to be locked.
00:18:58Indeed it is.
00:18:59About the house, there are other locked cupboards and doors.
00:19:03Please respect it.
00:19:04My experience with the honesty of servants has not always been reassuring.
00:19:09And I detest snoops.
00:19:30Dreams cost money.
00:19:32Pretty soon you'll be able to afford them, won't you?
00:19:34How about a lift?
00:19:36Thanks, I've got your sister's car.
00:19:38Ah, my mother.
00:19:40How's my dear sister these days?
00:19:42It's difficult to tell.
00:19:44I know one thing, she doesn't trust me.
00:19:46Well, at least, she trusts you with her fabulous heirloom.
00:19:51I wasn't sure I could still shift gears.
00:19:56How's your schedule with Amanda?
00:19:58I mean, has she given you a day off yet?
00:20:00Tomorrow.
00:20:01How about dinner?
00:20:04Somehow I don't think your sister would like that.
00:20:07She needn't, no.
00:20:12All right.
00:20:14Tomorrow.
00:20:39You must be Mrs. Gonzales.
00:20:42Who are you, Mrs. Gonzales?
00:20:46What happened?
00:20:47Oh, the ground.
00:20:48It shakes.
00:20:49Earthquake.
00:20:50You do not feel it?
00:20:52Nothing.
00:20:52I must have been driving when it happened.
00:20:54Oh, it was a little one.
00:20:56But it throws down the parts.
00:20:58I hope it hasn't broken any crystal.
00:21:01Where's Miss Price?
00:21:03Oh, Miss Price, she takes years, I think.
00:21:07Have you been with the family long?
00:21:10Oh, long time.
00:21:11I am here since they are children.
00:21:14But now everything changed.
00:21:16Changed?
00:21:17How?
00:21:17All the time fighting.
00:21:19They fight for money.
00:21:20But also, I think, for something else.
00:21:23I think, maybe for the father.
00:21:31To be father of children, one must be equal.
00:21:36Mr. Price, you have eyes only for one.
00:21:39Miss Nell.
00:21:40Anything she want, she can have.
00:21:43She run away and marry.
00:21:45Miss Amanda stay here, work, work.
00:21:48Then Miss Nell come back.
00:21:50And everything is the same.
00:21:52Mr. Price give her everything.
00:21:55And yet, when Mr. Price die,
00:21:59Miss Nell do not even stay to bury her father.
00:22:06It is sad.
00:22:08Yes, better to be happy.
00:23:41Cold?
00:23:42I quite like it.
00:23:46What are you, White Esther?
00:23:49I've told you I'm an ordinary girl. All I want is everything
00:23:55Well, we're kind of in the same boat aren't we? Hardly
00:23:59You had a fortune snap out from under you and I've got one dangling right in front of my nose
00:24:04Is that what all the hate is about? Is it really enough to want someone dead?
00:24:09I think it is
00:24:13There is a word for what you want
00:24:18The word is suicide
00:24:19The word is murder
00:24:22Don't be foolish
00:24:24If Amanda wants to kill herself
00:24:27Let Amanda kill herself
00:24:43Edward
00:24:44Where's Nell?
00:24:50Nell got her share and went away
00:24:55And why are all her clothes in my closet?
00:24:59Well, Nell had a lot of clothes and a lot of places
00:25:02I guess she didn't need them anymore
00:25:08Didn't need them
00:25:12Why? What are you thinking?
00:25:15I was thinking that if everything turned out the way you wanted it to
00:25:21I'd be a danger to you
00:25:23You'd have to kill me
00:25:30We're partners, remember?
00:25:36Now I am cold
00:25:39Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

00:31:31The enemies of the mind.

00:31:58I'm very tired.
00:32:00You can sleep now. There's nothing to be afraid of.
00:32:05Over here.
00:32:30I don't know.
00:32:30I know.
00:33:33Come in, Edward.
00:33:36Well, what?
00:33:38Natasha, 29.
00:33:40What a surprise to our dear father that someone else should drink it.
00:33:43Did you expect to drink it, Edward?
00:33:44No.
00:33:46No, I inherited his expensive taste, but not the money to afford them.
00:33:51As a matter of fact, that was the last burden that he put upon my shoulders.
00:33:57And you, my dear sister, were his happy accomplice.
00:34:00Nonsense.
00:34:01He saw your fatal weakness.
00:34:02Oh, yeah?
00:34:03Then what is that?
00:34:04Your self-pity.
00:34:05You wear it like a badge, like a beggar's sign.
00:34:08Forgive me, help me, for I cannot...
00:34:09All right, all right, all right.
00:34:10So sure?
00:34:11Damn, you're sure.
00:34:12And for a long time I used to believe that.
00:34:14But it was all pretense, wasn't it, Amanda?
00:34:17We know that now, don't we?
00:34:18Come on, get off of it.
00:34:20We have the same secrets.
00:34:24And who else knows them?
00:34:28Oh, the dead.
00:34:29And they do keep secrets very well.
00:34:35Well, you, uh...
00:34:36You invited me here, what do you want?
00:34:40I want to make an arrangement with you.
00:34:43An arrangement?
00:34:44What kind, dear sister?
00:34:46You've always wanted this house.
00:34:48Take it.
00:34:49I hate it anyway.
00:34:52I'll double your allowance.
00:34:53You can live almost as well as you've always fancied.
00:34:57Well, I'm overwhelmed with your sudden outburst of generosity, my dear sister.
00:35:02But what corresponding gesture do you expect in return?
00:35:06Send Esther away.
00:35:09Esther?
00:35:12Why?
00:35:13She's an intruder.
00:35:15Intruders are dangerous.
00:35:15They learn things.
00:35:26It's too late, Amanda.
00:35:29It's too late.
00:35:31What do you want?
00:35:34I want it all.
00:35:37Everything.
00:35:41We'd be paupas in a year.
00:35:44Not until I'm dead, Edwin.
00:35:46Not until I'm dead.
00:35:54Of course.
00:35:57That could be arranged, couldn't it?
00:36:01I would say that basically it's only a matter of who does it.
00:36:04You or I.
00:36:05You were really preparing to kill me?
00:36:09Of course.
00:36:12Edwin.
00:36:14If you wanted me dead, why didn't you let me go peaceably when I tried?
00:36:19Well, Amanda, as you tell me so very well, one must keep up with appearances, mustn't one?
00:36:25Well, so, with someone alerted the doctor, what could I do?
00:36:30But act like a loving brother that, of course, I am.
00:36:35And there is one to take advantage.
00:36:38I mean, Amanda, just think.
00:36:40What safer victim could there ever be than someone who has a record of suicide attempts?
00:37:01Hey, what's here?
00:37:02Thanks, Lydia.
00:37:03Hi, Doctor.
00:37:05Thought I'd just save a dime and come over and get Amanda's sleeping pill prescription.
00:37:09How is she?
00:37:10Pretty good.
00:37:12How's that nurse working out?
00:37:13Oh, she's doing fine.
00:37:15But I'm, uh, I'm staying away.
00:37:17I think it's better that way.
00:37:19Perhaps.
00:37:22Here you are.
00:37:28Doctor, uh, couldn't it save a lot of time and trouble just to double this thing?
00:37:32Well, in view of your sister's history, it would hardly be wise.
00:37:35You know, if someone's really intent on destroying themselves, there's very little you can do to stop it.
00:37:40But one doesn't place a loaded weapon in their hands.
00:37:42Of course.
00:37:44Of course.
00:37:44Well, uh, I'll be particularly careful.
00:37:46Thanks again, Doc.
00:37:49See you.
00:37:53Miss Robinson, please bring in the file on Amanda Price.
00:37:57Yes, Doctor.
00:38:06When was Miss Price's last prescript for sedatives?
00:38:11Ten days ago.
00:38:12Twenty-five secinal.
00:38:14One and a half grains.
00:38:18Is that all, Doctor?
00:38:21Yes, yes.
00:38:22Just, uh, make a similar entry for today.
00:38:36What a surprise to find you in the garden.
00:38:38I felt and feel the incarnation.
00:38:41It's a pity.
00:38:43Beautiful roses, wasting away with no one to enjoy them.
00:38:47Most of life is a waste, I've found.
00:38:50Isn't it enough that it's a beautiful day?
00:38:53Perhaps it once was.
00:38:57When I was very small, before my mother died, I used to live in this garden.
00:39:03I used to lie on the path, my eyes half closed, and watch the colors of the roses blur and
00:39:10dance.
00:39:13I helped my father plant these roses.
00:39:17He was a god to me then.
00:39:21Why did it change?
00:39:23My sister stole them from me.
00:39:27So I took the pruning shears one night, and I cut down all the roses.
00:39:31Every one.
00:39:36They grew back again.
00:39:38But it was never the same.
00:39:41It was a sad garden, full of brambles.
00:39:45Is that why you never visited?
00:39:48Or take roses into the house?
00:39:51Never.
00:39:53Until today.
00:40:06I'm still trying to make peace with him.
00:40:12Too late.
00:40:15I think you must have loved him very much.
00:40:19He was so surprised to die.
00:40:22I've forgotten that life is the one disease that's always fatal.
00:40:28One just never knows how to come.
00:40:31Or when.
00:40:34Or who.
00:40:54I waited and waited.
00:40:56Never showed up.
00:40:57I had errands to do.
00:40:58I don't believe that.
00:41:00All right.
00:41:00I thought it was a bad idea.
00:41:02Why?
00:41:02Redford, how's the wife?
00:41:04Relax, will you, and smile.
00:41:06Why?
00:41:07I thought you hired me to do a job, not to be an easy afternoon in bed.
00:41:12Are you losing your nerve?
00:41:15The difference is that I've met Amanda.
00:41:16I know her now.
00:41:20I've saved her all of her life.
00:41:22If she wants to die, let her.
00:41:24You make it almost sound right.
00:41:28It is, Esther.
00:41:29It is.
00:41:30It's almost like an act of mercy.
00:41:32Sometimes I feel as if I'm becoming another person.
00:41:36Someone I don't know.
00:41:39Esther.
00:41:41There's nothing to worry about.
00:41:42Believe me.
00:41:44I've got to go.
00:42:07You know what you're looking for?
00:42:09I know.
00:42:09I want some kind of poison to get rid of some pests.
00:42:13Oh, what are we talking about here?
00:42:14Rats, bugs, moles, big, medium, small.
00:42:18I've got all kinds.
00:42:19Coyotes.
00:42:20Oh, hell, what you want is sodium cyanide.
00:42:23That's about the strongest thing you can get.
00:42:25All coyote needs is one taste, and he's dead right now.
00:42:28This stuff don't fool around.
00:42:30That powerful, huh?
00:42:32Maybe I shouldn't take it.
00:42:33I mean, if it'll kill a coyote, it might kill a person.
00:42:37Oh, hell yes.
00:42:38If you've got kids, you've got to keep this under lock and key.
00:42:41You don't take no chances.
00:42:43Remember them Nazis?
00:42:45That's what they took if they got captured.
00:42:47Yes, is that right?
00:42:48One little capsule in the mouth.
00:42:51Save the expense of a hanging.
00:42:54You want it?
00:42:57Yeah, I'll try.
00:42:59Okay.
00:43:12I'm Dr. Thorne.
00:43:13Come in.
00:43:14You must be the nurse that Mr. Price engaged.
00:43:16Yes, I am.
00:43:18Is Miss Price about?
00:43:20I believe she's taking a nap.
00:43:22And how is Miss Price these days?
00:43:25In your own judgment.
00:43:27She's been having nightmares.
00:43:30A couple of nights ago, I found her on the stairs.
00:43:33She had no idea of which it was.
00:43:35Sleepwalking?
00:43:36Absolutely terrified.
00:43:38I should think so.
00:43:40Well, I gave Mr. Price a new prescription for sleeping capsules.
00:43:45Keep them in your possession.
00:43:47I understand.
00:43:49Leaving so soon, Doctor?
00:43:52I was just about to have some tea.
00:43:55Won't you join me?
00:43:58I'm sorry, Amanda, but I'm due at the hospital.
00:44:01I just dropped in on my way.
00:44:04Dropped in?
00:44:05For what?
00:44:06To take my pulse?
00:44:08To see how you were getting along.
00:44:10Uh, would you mind if I went and made tea?
00:44:13That would be nice.
00:44:17And how am I getting along, Doctor?
00:44:20I assume Miss Harper has kept you up on my comings and goings.
00:44:24My rages, my fears.
00:44:28Nothing nearly so dramatic.
00:44:31What then?
00:44:34No more than the fact that, occasionally, you were a little moody.
00:44:39Moody?
00:44:40Ha, ha.
00:44:40I sing and dance all day long.
00:44:43Good God, Doctor.
00:44:44Only idiots are not moody.
00:44:46Amanda, it's really not healthy for anyone to stay in so much.
00:44:51And what's so healthy about the outside, pray?
00:44:53Don't you read the papers?
00:44:54What else is out there but rape and robbery and deceit?
00:44:59And murder and greed and war.
00:45:00It just depends on what you see.
00:45:02Really, Amanda, why don't you give some thought to a trip, a change of scene, get out of yourself
00:45:08for a bit.
00:45:09Where's your sister Nell?
00:45:11Why do you ask?
00:45:14Well, didn't she go back abroad?
00:45:16Perhaps she might enjoy a visit from you.
00:45:23I'm glad you find it so amusing.
00:45:27I'm sorry, Doctor.
00:45:28It struck me oddly.
00:45:30But by all means, you're right.
00:45:33I shall give it some thought.
00:45:35Perhaps I shall visit Nell.
00:45:39All right.
00:45:41All right.
00:45:42I have to go.
00:45:50All right.
00:45:51All right.
00:45:55All right.
00:45:56All right.
00:46:51The house is silent tonight.
00:46:54The house is always quiet.
00:46:59Tonight it's particularly quiet.
00:47:06Odd, isn't it?
00:47:08We've been thrown together, you, Edward, and I.
00:47:13Like strangers in a lifeboat.
00:47:16Who will survive.
00:47:19Who will die.
00:47:25And what did he promise you, Esther?
00:47:30Promise?
00:47:31To be my executioner.
00:47:34And how will it be done?
00:47:38The gun.
00:47:39Axe.
00:47:41Or in some subtler way.
00:47:45If it were true, would I admit it?
00:47:52Perhaps.
00:47:54I suppose I want to trust you.
00:47:57And you don't.
00:48:02Is that why you haven't touched the wine?
00:48:05The Borgias used poison.
00:48:09Usually quick, effective, and without unseemly violence.
00:48:31Well done, Esther.
00:48:35Now, if we clear the table, I'll go to my room.
00:48:38Let's go.
00:48:39Let's go.
00:48:40No.
00:48:41Let's go.
00:48:42Let's go.
00:48:44Let's go.
00:49:06No, no, no, no, no.
00:49:14No, no, no.
00:49:44Where are you?
00:49:46Where are you, Father?
00:49:49I'm frightened.
00:49:51What frightened you, my child?
00:49:54Where are you?
00:49:56I'm frightened.
00:49:59I'm frightened.
00:50:04Why should you be frightened, my child?
00:50:08I'm so sorry, Father.
00:50:10Why should you be sorry?
00:50:16I cut down the robes' bushes.
00:50:20That was a terrible thing to do, and for it you shall be punished.
00:50:26You will be punished.
00:50:29Last will and testament, I, James Glendon, Christ being of sound mind, do hereby amend all earlier wills and testaments
00:50:36whatever.
00:50:37To my weakling son, Edward, and my faithless daughter, Amanda, I leave nothing.
00:50:45To my beloved daughter, Nell, I do bequeath control of all my estate monies and earthly possessions.
00:50:52Hers to enjoy so long as she may live.
00:50:55James Glendon, Christ.
00:51:03There's something happened, Amanda.
00:51:05You seem dreadfully shook up.
00:51:08So you've won.
00:51:12I must say, as sick as father may be, he writes a beautiful hand and expresses himself so clearly.
00:51:21Don't you agree?
00:51:22I nursed him.
00:51:24My God, for over two years, I nursed him day and night.
00:51:28It was your choice, Sister dear.
00:51:29I'm hardly responsible.
00:51:31And you had yours until your lover ran out on you.
00:51:33How dare you come back here and take everything I sleep for?
00:51:38If you'll be good children, you and Edward, I shan't let you suffer.
00:51:44I won't beg for it, Nell.
00:51:46Oh, pity.
00:51:48You may have to.
00:51:50Pride goeth before the fall, or so they say.
00:51:53Give it to me.
00:51:54They certainly will not.
00:51:56I said give it to me, Amanda.
00:51:58Don't you dare touch me.
00:52:00Amanda, you're crazy.
00:52:02Edward!
00:52:03Oh, Amanda!
00:52:05A banger!
00:52:09Amanda!
00:52:18Stop it.
00:52:24Amanda!
00:52:26Edward!
00:52:30No!
00:52:32I did it!
00:52:35Amanda and I!
00:52:37Murder!
00:52:54Now we have only each other to hate.
00:52:58What do we do about an L?
00:53:00Come, I'll show you.
00:53:18I'll show you.
00:54:07I'll show you.
00:54:08I'll show you.
00:54:34I'll show you.
00:54:36I'll show you.
00:54:37I'll show you.
00:54:53I'll show you.
00:55:37I'll show you.
00:56:06I'll show you.
00:56:19I'll show you.
00:56:56I'll show you.
00:57:20I'll show you.
00:57:25I'll show you.
00:57:40I'll show you.
00:57:41I'll show you.
00:58:21I'll show you.
00:58:29I'll show you.
00:58:36I'll show you.
00:58:39I'll show you.
00:59:14I'll show you.
00:59:15I'll show you.
00:59:15I'll show you.
00:59:30I'll show you.
00:59:40I'll show you.
00:59:51I'll show you.
01:00:13I'll show you.
01:00:16I'll show you.
01:00:35I'll show you.
01:00:40I'll show you.
01:00:54I'll show you.
01:01:10I'll show you.
01:01:15I'll show you.
01:01:32I'll show you.
01:01:34I'll show you.
01:01:59I'll show you.
01:02:26I'll show you.
01:03:46Bless me, Father.
01:03:53Are you there, Father?
01:03:56Speak my turn.
01:03:58I hardly know where to begin.
01:04:01I haven't been in a church since I was a child.
01:04:06So many little sins to confess.
01:04:12Lies.
01:04:13Jealousies.
01:04:17Stealing even...
01:04:19Small things from my father.
01:04:21I kept them in the back of my closet.
01:04:27Pieces of my father all wrapped in an anchor.
01:04:33They were little things.
01:04:37Even a child I carried.
01:04:43But then I...
01:04:50I committed a sin.
01:04:54Too great to be.
01:05:00I'm frightened, Father.
01:05:02What's wrong?
01:05:03Go on.
01:05:05All my life I hated my sister.
01:05:11She had everything I ever wanted.
01:05:19So we killed her.
01:05:21My brother and I.
01:05:28She's still here.
01:05:32Every night in my dream she visits me.
01:05:41Go on, go on.
01:05:43Go on.
01:05:52Only you...
01:05:54and God...
01:05:55and God...
01:05:57and God...
01:05:58and God...
01:05:59No one else.
01:06:02No one.
01:06:08Thank you, Father.
01:06:25What?
01:06:31Amen.
01:06:39No.
01:06:40No.
01:06:42No.
01:06:45No.
01:06:46No.
01:06:46No.
01:07:18I don't know.
01:07:38Hello? Oh, Charlie.
01:07:41I'm sorry. I just got back from the hospital.
01:07:44What did you find out on L. Price?
01:07:46Zero. International flights, domestic carriers.
01:07:49Hell, I even checked the town cabbie.
01:07:51No record anywhere.
01:07:53Maybe a friend, Victor, up.
01:07:55Maybe.
01:07:57Listen, Doc, I sure hope it's all that important.
01:07:59I could have shot 18 holes this afternoon.
01:08:02At least you can do is give me some free medical advice.
01:08:05Well, I can give it to you right now.
01:08:07Don't eat so much. You're getting fat.
01:08:10Thank you, Charlie.
01:08:11I do appreciate all your effort.
01:08:12Bye-bye.
01:08:14Bye-bye.
01:08:39I'm going in.
01:08:41I'll go with you.
01:08:43No, don't you come.
01:08:45If I go in alone, you know, it'll seem more innocent.
01:08:50There's no need for you to get involved.
01:08:51I'll take the risk.
01:08:56All right.
01:08:59All right, but you must give her the pills tonight.
01:09:01What if she refuses?
01:09:03Then call me.
01:09:04It has to be tonight.
01:09:05We're through waiting.
01:09:08By the way, how will I be paid?
01:09:10Will it be in cash?
01:09:14Of course.
01:09:21All right.
01:09:25All right.
01:10:57Good evening, doctor.
01:10:58Evening, lieutenant.
01:11:01Just coffee, please.
01:11:23You got something on your mind, doctor?
01:11:26Yes, I've got a problem. I don't know what to do with it.
01:11:29Oh, yeah?
01:11:30Well, all I have is a guess, a suspicion.
01:11:35But I'd like you to come to the Price home with me.
01:11:39I think Amanda Price is in great danger.
01:11:43On what grounds?
01:11:44Well, as I said, all I have is a guess.
01:11:48But I think it's because she has knowledge of a crime that's already been committed.
01:11:53What kind of a crime?
01:11:56Murder.
01:12:07You wouldn't want to be left behind, would you, Jethro?
01:12:13You'd be too lonely.
01:12:15We've been together so long.
01:12:19She wouldn't like taking tea with strangers.
01:12:23Dad.
01:12:30Dad.
01:12:33Dad.
01:12:35Dad.
01:12:35Dad.
01:12:35Dad.
01:12:36Dad.
01:12:38Dad.
01:12:41Dad.
01:12:42Dad.
01:12:58Amanda.
01:12:59I know you're in there.
01:13:02Please answer me.
01:13:08Amanda, answer me.
01:13:11What do you want?
01:13:14Where have you been?
01:13:15I've been looking for you everywhere.
01:13:17I had errands to do.
01:13:22Amanda, please let me in.
01:13:24I have to talk to you.
01:13:33If you insist, hurt yourself.
01:13:42What's wrong, Amanda?
01:13:49What's wrong, Amanda?
01:13:52You seem so strange.
01:13:56No.
01:13:58I'm not frightened anymore.
01:14:02Here, mail these in the morning for me.
01:14:06If you leave me, I'm going to take a pill and go to bed.
01:14:13You mustn't.
01:14:16Why mustn't I?
01:14:18They're poisoned, I'm sure of it.
01:14:21Edward.
01:14:29I'm not surprised.
01:14:32He hired you to kill me, didn't he?
01:14:35Yes.
01:14:36And you couldn't.
01:14:42We could have been such good friends.
01:14:46Don't touch me!
01:15:07You won't see me!
01:15:09No!
01:15:09No!
01:15:25Oh
01:15:44Oh
01:15:46Oh
01:16:09Yes
01:16:16Did Amanda come back
01:16:57We'll be back in just a moment, Mr. Price
01:17:27Where's my sister?
01:17:29The ambulance just left for the body
01:17:32What happened?
01:17:35She was determined to kill herself
01:17:37I tried to stop
01:17:39Oh, my God
01:17:43My God
01:17:47And after all the things that I tried to do to prevent it
01:17:52And in spite of it, we failed
01:17:54The best plans don't always succeed, Edward
01:17:56You did your best
01:18:00Well, it's
01:18:02It's all on my shoulders now, isn't it?
01:18:06This house
01:18:07The estate, the lawyers
01:18:10I don't even know where to begin
01:18:12Oh, I don't think you have to carry that burden, Edward
01:18:16What do you mean?
01:18:17You see, just before she died, Amanda made a will
01:18:20She provided for Mr. Gonzalez, of course
01:18:23And she left the bulk of her estate
01:18:24Including this house
01:18:27To Miss Harper here
01:18:32Oh, well
01:18:34You're lying
01:18:35Let me see that will
01:18:36I have it
01:18:37Miss Harper gave it to me
01:18:39Oh, I see
01:18:39Miss Harper gave it to you
01:18:40Miss Harper gave it to you?
01:18:42Well, let me tell you about Miss Harper, Doctor
01:18:45Miss Harper plays for very high stakes, don't you?
01:18:48Oh
01:18:48First, it was the senile old millionaire
01:18:51But you got caught, didn't you?
01:18:52She got caught
01:18:53But now she's trying to do it again
01:18:54But could you make yourself clear?
01:18:56Oh, I'll make it very clear, very clear
01:18:57You see, she wormed her way in here
01:18:58And then seduced my sister into changing her will
01:19:00And then you killed her and tried to make it look like suicide
01:19:03That's what she did
01:19:04And I want to know what's in those pills
01:19:05I demand a laboratory analysis of exactly what's in those pills
01:19:08What she gave my sister
01:19:09It'll be done
01:19:10Oh, you're so smart, but you stayed up there
01:19:13You were trying to stop Amanda
01:19:17You were forcing her to take the poison, weren't you?
01:19:21She didn't take poison, Edward
01:19:25She jumped
01:19:32Well, I'm so confused, I didn't
01:19:34It's just so much has happened
01:19:36Maybe a drink will help steady your nerves
01:19:39Some of that brandy your sister stored in the cellar
01:19:47No whiskey
01:19:48The cellar door's locked
01:19:50I think you'll find it open
01:19:53Open
01:19:55Open
01:20:07Well, I'll see
01:21:38I think we have got a lot to talk about.
01:21:53You see, Edward, Amanda left two letters, a will and a full confession.
01:21:59She finally said what she had to say.
01:22:05I couldn't do it.
01:22:07I had to tell them all I know.
01:22:10Oh, I'm sorry, Edward.
01:22:38Well, Mrs. Gonzalez.
01:22:39So many years.
01:22:43Once they were little children.
01:22:47And now they are all gone.
01:22:51Only he is still here.
01:22:54Let him stay in the silence.
01:23:02I hope you come back sometime.
01:23:05Never.
01:23:07Oh, I hope you come back.
01:23:24Oh, I hope you come back.
