00:00:07The End
00:01:17Hello, Herbert. What's going on here?
00:01:21Chinese wedding?
00:01:23No. Funeral.
00:01:26Is somebody dead?
00:01:29Hope so. They're going to bury him.
00:01:32Oh, blimey, ooh.
00:01:35Dr. Fu Manchu. Ain't you ever read about him?
00:01:38No.
00:01:51Do you feel equal to going in?
00:01:53No. No, Inspector Smith. It's still so horrible to me.
00:01:58I'll take Lear for a little drive, and we'll pick you up later.
00:02:02All right, Dr. Petrie.
00:02:07Oh, I say, Inspector.
00:02:09Oh, hello, Cameron. Are you covering this for your paper?
00:02:12Yes. There are several details I wish to clear up.
00:02:15Well, I'll be glad to help you if you'll come inside and wait for me while I officially attend the
00:02:19service.
00:02:20Thanks very much.
00:02:51Oh, my God.
00:02:57Oh, my God.
00:03:13Oh, my God.
00:03:18You live in all my life.
00:03:28Ready, how are you?
00:03:32What do you think?
00:03:35What do you think?
00:03:38What do you think?
00:03:57Let's sit down here.
00:03:59Oh, thanks.
00:04:03Can you tell me how many men Fu Manchu actually murdered?
00:04:08I'm afraid we'll never know.
00:04:09He was too clever in his methods.
00:04:12Look here, Camden.
00:04:14Can't you persuade your paper to soften that part of the story?
00:04:17Before Fu Manchu went insane,
00:04:20he was a magnificent scientist working for mankind.
00:04:23And not only that, during the Boxer Rising,
00:04:26he was the best friend the white man had in China.
00:04:28And when the Chinese rabble attacked the British legation,
00:04:32Eltham, one of the missionaries,
00:04:34sent his little girl to Fu for safety.
00:04:36But some of the Chinese snipers used Fu's garden wall for protection.
00:04:42The white troops were obliged to fire.
00:04:45And Fu Manchu's wife, a little son whom he adored,
00:04:50were killed before his eyes.
00:04:52Is that when he went insane?
00:04:54Yes.
00:04:54And in the mistaken belief that his white friends had intentionally fired on his house,
00:04:59he swore to his gods that he'd wipe them out to the third generation,
00:05:03and that he'd use the child, Leah Eltham, in his vengeance.
00:05:08The next 20 years, Fu spent murdering the surviving officers of the Boxer Rising in Russia, Germany, and France.
00:05:23And just before death, Fu sent to each of his victims this blood-stained dragon.
00:05:31The stain represents his wife's blood.
00:05:35For every officer he murdered, he regilded a scale that had been covered with blood.
00:05:41Ah, there's one left.
00:05:43Yes.
00:05:43He meant to kill young Petrie for that scale.
00:05:47He brought the girl Leah into the plot,
00:05:50oh, entirely innocently upon her part,
00:05:52and used her to lure the boy.
00:05:55And one time, he actually had them both prisoners in Limehouse.
00:05:59Ah, that was when you made your famous capture, wasn't it?
00:06:02I'm afraid death made the capture.
00:06:05He took some oriental poison he'd concocted just as we got him.
00:06:11Ah, delightful chap.
00:06:13Inspector, why are you here today?
00:06:17To see the cotton seal.
00:06:19And also, to pay my respects to a truly great man.
00:06:23I know today for an old man,
00:06:50it's been similar.
00:06:52Jesus and theáng king will scream inilly cloths.
00:06:53… they know then you believe this man?
00:07:28Just one thing more, Inspector.
00:07:30What's happened to young Petrie and the girl?
00:07:35They've been through a horrible ordeal, but they're young and very much in love.
00:07:41As a matter of fact, I've got my eye on a wedding present.
00:08:01Oh, yes, teacher.
00:08:04Oh, yes, teacher.
00:08:25As nice a funeral as I could wish for.
00:08:29Yes, master.
00:08:30Do not look so serious, stupid one.
00:08:35This wax on my face makes it difficult to laugh.
00:08:43And now, Chang, we have work to do.
00:08:48We must not tolerate interference from anyone.
00:09:03Gods of my ancestors, help me to keep my solemn promise to you.
00:09:10Only one life more.
00:09:13Let the blood of Jack Petrie wipe the stain.
00:09:18From the house of food.
00:09:27Do you hear that?
00:09:30The organist is practicing the wedding march in the chapel.
00:09:35Wasn't it nice of Aunt Agatha and Aunt Helen to have the wedding here?
00:09:39You know, my great-grandfather was married in that chapel.
00:09:44In a few more hours, we'll be married.
00:09:48Nonsense, Helen.
00:09:49The Lohengrin march always comes first.
00:09:53Da, da, da, da.
00:09:55Slowly and solemnly, up to the altar like that, and then...
00:09:58Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da.
00:10:02Back down the aisle in triumph, in the spirit of...
00:10:05I've got my man.
00:10:07I guess.
00:10:09Oh, there you are.
00:10:14Hello.
00:10:17I don't know how we'll ever be able to thank you and Aunt Helen for all you're doing for us.
00:10:22My dear, you've already paid us a thousandfold.
00:10:26Indeed you have.
00:10:28Don't you realize the thrill two maiden ladies feel?
00:10:32Having a wedding in their own house?
00:10:34Speak for yourself, my dear.
00:10:36I get no thrill at all out of sentiment.
00:10:38Oh, don't put on your Amazon mood, Agatha.
00:10:45Look where you're going.
00:10:48I can't.
00:10:52Oh, get along, Phyllis.
00:10:54Get along.
00:10:56The old spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
00:11:00What's the matter with you, Sylvester?
00:11:02You're quaking like a jelly.
00:11:04I can't help it, Lady Agatha.
00:11:06Ever since Fu Manchu came into my life, I've been nothing but a nervous wreck.
00:11:11I've been buying eight strong cups of tea since breakfast, but nothing seems to help.
00:11:16Well, there's nothing to be nervous about now. Fu Manchu's dead, isn't he?
00:11:20So they tell me.
00:11:23Oh!
00:11:25My soul and body!
00:11:29Wait, don't do it. I beg of you.
00:11:32What's the matter now?
00:11:34There's nothing in the world so sure to bring bad luck as the groom kissing the bride before the wedding.
00:11:41Rubbish.
00:11:42If they didn't kiss before the wedding, there'd never be any wedding.
00:11:46Now, run along, you two, and look over the marriage service in the prayer book.
00:11:50You don't know a word of it, either of you.
00:11:53I'll take care of him.
00:11:55I'll take care of him.
00:11:55Oh, but please, don't...
00:11:58Leave them alone.
00:12:00Yes, sir.
00:12:03Yes.
00:12:16To love and to cherish, until death us do part.
00:12:25Oh, we're going to be so happy.
00:12:32What was that?
00:12:36I was only an aeroplane shadow.
00:12:43Leah!
00:12:47I feel just the way I used to when Dr. Fu was alive.
00:12:52I'm near.
00:12:53Oh, look.
00:13:14Is everything prepared, as I have ordered?
00:13:19Is the camouflage arranged for our aeroplane?
00:13:25I will have ordered, master.
00:13:27And the wedding of Dr. Petrie, it takes place today.
00:13:33Yes, today, honourable one.
00:13:37Good.
00:13:38Although they have not seen fit to send me an invitation,
00:13:42I shall be, nevertheless, an interested, though invisible, guest.
00:13:52And you'll be so happy.
00:13:53Come and have a look at yourself in the large mirror.
00:13:56Just perfectly lovely.
00:13:57That gown is beautiful.
00:13:59And you're going to be so happy, I know.
00:14:01Oh, I love weddings, dear.
00:14:04Oh, I love those pearls.
00:14:06Pins, well.
00:14:07Flowers, thank you.
00:14:09Say, Lou, I'm going to throw the wedding bouquet straight at you,
00:14:13You've seen it, you catch it.
00:14:14I catch it.
00:14:22How dark is it getting?
00:14:24There must be a storm coming.
00:14:26Yes, I think we should have some light.
00:14:41Oh, there's so much to remember.
00:14:44And exactly as much to forget.
00:14:48Ring, right hand, left hand, pass over, ring.
00:14:51Right hand, left hand, pass over, ring.
00:14:54Right hand, left hand, pass over, ring.
00:14:56Right hand, left hand, pass over, ring.
00:15:00Stop! I intrigued you, stop.
00:15:03Stop what?
00:15:05Whistling.
00:15:06It's bad luck.
00:15:08All right.
00:15:15Don't!
00:15:17It's worse luck to sing than to whistle.
00:15:20Say, tell me, Sylvester.
00:15:22Is it bad luck to strangle your best man?
00:15:24I don't think so.
00:15:26No.
00:15:27Excellent.
00:15:29Don't leave me alone.
00:15:32I'm so nervous now.
00:15:37Oh, Inspector King.
00:15:39Oh, you're a darling to take that long trip just to give me away.
00:15:43You're a darling to ask me.
00:15:45You know, I feel as though you belong to me.
00:15:49Come along.
00:15:49Come along.
00:15:50The music's already started in the chapel.
00:15:52Well, take care of her veil.
00:15:54Oh, take care of her trade.
00:15:55Oh, here's flowers.
00:15:56Missy Lea.
00:15:57Oh, thank you, Feilou.
00:15:58Oh, I'm so happy.
00:16:00Missy Lea, happy?
00:16:03Leave all Feilou.
00:16:05No, you old darling.
00:16:07You're going to live with us always.
00:16:09Oh, come along.
00:16:10Come along.
00:16:10Don't be so sentimental.
00:16:11A wedding's no place for sentiment.
00:16:13Come along.
00:16:13Come along.
00:16:14Is everything all right?
00:16:16Missy Lea.
00:16:18Missy Lea.
00:16:19Oh, girl.
00:16:20Do be careful of that trade.
00:16:26Oh.
00:16:28Oh.
00:16:28Dear, my dear, what's the matter?
00:16:31I don't know.
00:16:33I feel just as I used to.
00:16:36Oh.
00:16:37It's the wedding excitement.
00:16:39No wonder the child's upset.
00:16:42Don't worry.
00:16:44I'm all right now.
00:16:52Now, now, everybody, be calm.
00:16:54Be calm.
00:16:55Now, don't, don't, don't get excited.
00:16:58Watch me.
00:16:59See how calm I am.
00:17:03They're ready.
00:17:04Now, be perfectly calm.
00:17:05Be perfectly calm, doctor.
00:17:06Remember, I'll be there with you.
00:17:08Now, we, quick, we go in by the side door.
00:17:11Ready, ready?
00:17:12Ring.
00:17:12Right hand.
00:17:13Left hand.
00:17:14Pass over.
00:17:14Pass over.
00:17:15Pass over.
00:17:16Ring.
00:17:17Right hand.
00:17:27Right hand.
00:17:33Is it nice?
00:17:34Yes, it is.
00:17:36Yes, it is.
00:17:36Yes, it is.
00:17:37Yes, it is.
00:17:38Oh, dear.
00:17:41Yes, it is.
00:17:51Oh, dear.
00:17:55Yes, it is.
00:17:57The End
00:18:27and in the face of this congregation,
00:18:30to join together this man and this woman
00:18:35in holy matrimony,
00:18:37which is an honorable estate in...
00:18:42Missy Lea! Missy Lea! Missy Lea!
00:18:46Missy Lea!
00:18:49Doctor! Missy Lea!
00:18:51Fool! Man!
00:18:53Who met you?
00:18:55Alive?
00:18:58Who met you?
00:19:00Alive?
00:19:01Oh, I knew it!
00:19:03I felt him near me!
00:19:05She's dead.
00:19:21Now, please don't cry any more, dear.
00:19:27You found anything Smith?
00:19:28Not a thing.
00:19:30Some agent of Fu Manchu is responsible for this.
00:19:33I think it is Fu Manchu himself.
00:19:38But I saw Fu Manchu dead.
00:19:41I pronounced him dead.
00:19:42Yes, and I saw him sealed in his coffin.
00:19:45But I'm convinced now that he lives.
00:19:50Wasn't there an autopsy performed on the body?
00:19:53No. Out of respect for his religion.
00:19:56Stupid!
00:19:58I deserve any criticism you may care to make, Lady Agatha.
00:20:03Nonsense.
00:20:04Was it on my pronouncement that you passed the body?
00:20:06Good of you to share the blame, Petrie.
00:20:08But I'm afraid it's not going to help much.
00:20:28But how can he still be alive?
00:20:32The poison he took was obviously not poison.
00:20:36The funeral was conducted entirely by Orientals.
00:20:40I don't doubt the embalming was fate.
00:20:43Anything is possible with a man as rich and diabolical as Fu Manchu.
00:20:48But still, I'm not convinced that he's alive.
00:20:52I'm sure of it.
00:20:54I felt it.
00:20:56Why should that fiend take it out on poor and offensive Fe Lu?
00:21:01You've forgotten that she once betrayed him.
00:21:04When he had Petrie a prisoner in Limehouse,
00:21:07it was Fe Lu who saved Jack's life.
00:21:09And mine.
00:21:10So you see, Fe Lu's death served a double purpose.
00:21:14What do you mean?
00:21:16Revenge and warning.
00:21:19I found this message in Fe Lu's hand.
00:21:22It's addressed to you, Petrie.
00:21:24Shall I read it?
00:21:26Please.
00:21:28Esteemed Dr. Petrie,
00:21:31let this be the first warning that your life is still forfeit to the gods of my ancestors.
00:21:38Lest you still have faith that your misguided friends can shield you, or the brilliant Inspector Smith protect you,
00:21:45I shall send a second warning through my faithful Lear.
00:21:52May you die a thousand mental deaths in anticipation of the third and last warning, which I shall deliver to
00:21:59you myself.
00:22:01There is still one bloodstained scale to be wiped out.
00:22:07The dragon has begun to coil about you.
00:22:11Fu Manchu.
00:22:15Smith, we must do something.
00:22:16We must do something at once.
00:22:18We'll get nowhere, Petrie, by losing our heads.
00:22:23Sorry.
00:22:26Inspector Smith, the men have arrived from Scotland Yard.
00:22:29Good.
00:22:30For Lady Helen.
00:22:32Do you mind them coming in?
00:22:33Certainly not, Inspector.
00:22:35Show them in.
00:22:36Yes, Millie.
00:22:45Come in, please.
00:22:47Good evening.
00:22:48Good evening, sir.
00:22:49Good evening.
00:22:50Good evening, sir.
00:22:52Good evening, sir.
00:22:52Evening, sir.
00:22:54You all know from my message that Fu Manchu is alive.
00:22:58Yes, sir.
00:22:59Yes, sir.
00:22:59My men realize the seriousness of that statement only too well.
00:23:03Now I must ask all of you to follow my orders to the letter.
00:23:07We will do as you say, Inspector.
00:23:10The first thing is to plan our defense.
00:23:12Morley.
00:23:13Sir.
00:23:14Kennel.
00:23:15Sir.
00:23:16You two men guard the north gate.
00:23:18Very good, sir.
00:23:19Abbott.
00:23:20Sir.
00:23:20The bridge over the moat.
00:23:22Very good, sir.
00:23:23Trasca.
00:23:24Yes, sir.
00:23:24You stay on guard in the path.
00:23:26Yes, sir.
00:23:26Gordon.
00:23:27Sir.
00:23:27Tell the constable to use the stable men as a patrol around the outer wall.
00:23:31Very good, sir.
00:23:32Post all men in the shadows.
00:23:33Yes, sir.
00:23:34You two men stay in the house with me.
00:23:36Yes, sir.
00:23:37My first request is that you retire to your rooms immediately.
00:23:44Harding.
00:23:44Yes, sir.
00:23:45You stay with Dr. Petrie here.
00:23:48Don't leave him for a moment.
00:23:51Lawrence.
00:23:51Yes, sir.
00:23:52You're to guard Miss Lear.
00:23:54And now please remember, Fu Manchu was in this house tonight.
00:24:01And his traps may be laid in the most unsuspected places.
00:24:05Keep away from all windows.
00:24:08I don't wish to alarm you unduly, but Fu Manchu may still be in this house.
00:24:18If I see anything, I'll die.
00:24:21I know I'll die.
00:24:25And if I don't see anything, I'll be scared to death.
00:24:33I'm not afraid for myself.
00:24:36It's for you.
00:24:37No.
00:24:39Come, Lear.
00:25:01Sylvester, what are you afraid of?
00:25:05I'm afraid of nothing.
00:25:07Nothing?
00:25:09Nothing.
00:25:11But I shall sit up all night.
00:25:14Petrie.
00:25:15Yes, Inspector.
00:25:16I want to go over the plans of the house again.
00:25:27Sylvester, dear, that was only Phyllis barking.
00:25:30Oh.
00:25:32Just think.
00:25:33I may be dead tomorrow.
00:25:36And if I'm not here,
00:25:37there won't be anybody left to be sorry for me.
00:25:40stay back.
00:25:54Run!
00:25:55Run!
00:26:03And that's not all,
00:26:05this miserable Fu Manchu.
00:26:07Who?
00:26:08Yes, my lady.
00:26:08I tell you, if we women were running Scotland Yard,
00:26:12he'd never have been allowed to behave in this heathenish way.
00:26:15Yes, my lady.
00:26:38Do you know what it was?
00:26:39Listen.
00:26:46Don't be frightened.
00:26:47There's probably some men in the wood.
00:26:49No, it's not that.
00:26:51It's the call of Siva.
00:26:53The call of Siva?
00:26:55Yes.
00:26:56I heard it in the Orient.
00:26:58Dr. Fu told me it was a signal
00:26:59used by a tribe of native thugs.
00:27:04Shh.
00:27:18No!
00:27:20No!
00:27:23No!
00:27:33Smith!
00:27:34It's Mark.
00:27:35Put your shoulder to it!
00:27:38Lear, I dare get them.
00:27:39Where's the light switch?
00:27:40Over here.
00:27:43You don't get it yet, Beatrice.
00:27:50Beatrice!
00:27:57Look it up!
00:28:08Don't touch that!
00:28:11It's a dart from a blowgun, and maybe poison.
00:28:16The second note from Pfoe.
00:28:25Esteemed Dr. Petrie,
00:28:27be at the Standing Stones on the moor at midnight, quite alone.
00:28:31Obviously, this is a trap,
00:28:33yet with Lear as the precious bait,
00:28:35you will instantly walk into it.
00:28:37To an Oriental, a woman would not be worth the risk.
00:28:40But being a white man,
00:28:42you will not be able to bear the thought of her suffering torture.
00:28:46Your sentimentality will bring you,
00:28:49with sympathy,
00:28:51Fu Manchu.
00:28:53Where are you going?
00:28:54To the Standing Stones, of course.
00:28:56Listen, Doctor.
00:28:57I realize you're a Petrie and descended from a long line of brave men,
00:29:01but don't let your courage outrun your common sense.
00:29:04Smith, I have more respect for you than any man alive.
00:29:07But the thought of Lear in Fu's clutches is driving me mad.
00:29:10I've got to do something.
00:29:11Wait a bit.
00:29:12I can't wait.
00:29:12It's already 11 o'clock, and he's torturing her.
00:29:14He says so on that note.
00:29:16Don't you think your death would torture her?
00:29:19Ah, don't try and reason with me, Smith.
00:29:21There's only one thing I can understand.
00:29:23Fu Manchu has got Lear.
00:29:25I know it.
00:29:26And because of that,
00:29:27we may get Fu Manchu,
00:29:29and save Lear,
00:29:31and Lady Agatha.
00:29:33But you've got to follow my orders.
00:29:36What's your plan?
00:29:38Tonight at midnight.
00:29:47We've got the place surrounded, sir.
00:29:49As close as we dare get without being observed.
00:29:52Very good.
00:29:53Remember to keep your men hidden until the attack.
00:29:55Fu Manchu said that, Peter, you must come alone.
00:29:58Very good, sir.
00:29:58How about lights?
00:29:59We've got 40 motorcars.
00:30:01When I fire two shots,
00:30:02they've ordered us to turn their headlights on
00:30:04and flood the whole place with lights.
00:30:06Then we close in.
00:30:09Here he comes now.
00:30:18Everything ready, Smith?
00:30:19Everything's ready.
00:30:21Better use your car, Petry.
00:30:24They're expecting you at 12 sharp.
00:30:25It's now 11.40.
00:30:28Every man to his post, Harding.
00:30:29Very good, sir.
00:30:38Just stop.
00:30:45You can't keep your car on and go.
00:30:47Here's my new car, son.
00:30:47If he needs to go,
00:30:51I'm back then.
00:30:58I'm going.
00:30:59I'm going.
00:31:00All right.
00:31:03You're pushing you.
00:31:04A decent way.
00:31:19Out for plane! Hurry, hurry!
00:31:33Mustard, the gates are shut.
00:31:36Well.
00:31:41Put this in the black onyx bottle.
00:31:48Are you certain that no one suspects us in this place?
00:31:54Quite certain, Honourable One.
00:31:56It is well.
00:31:59This old dye works is excellent for our purposes,
00:32:03and you have prepared it very cleverly in accordance with my orders.
00:32:12My good nature shall reward you.
00:32:20Where is he, that miserable Fu Manchu?
00:32:24I demand that I see him, and at once.
00:32:27Since she has come to herself, it is impossible to keep her quiet.
00:32:31Permit her to come in.
00:32:59Your hands!
00:33:01Your hands!
00:33:03Thank you, Stanton.
00:33:10you have something to tell me lady agatha i have a great deal to tell you what do you mean
00:33:17by
00:33:17carrying on in this fashion frightening women half out of their wits and making a game of murder
00:33:22what do you mean where's lear not having your superb constitution she has not yet recovered
00:33:30you dare so much as to lay a hand on that girl i i demand that you release us at
00:33:35once i can well
00:33:36understand you're being terrified to find yourself in my hands helpless but being an english woman you
00:33:46are too proud to show your fear and if you know what's good for you dr pooh you'll give up
00:33:52this
00:33:53melodramatic nonsense and get back to china
00:34:03you will pardon me
00:34:10i quite agree with you i shall look forward to continuing our discussion some other time
00:34:18just now i have matters of greater importance
00:34:24this got her ladyship to her cell and see that she has every comfort
00:34:28that she has every heart
00:34:50lear
00:34:51Lear, Lear, ah, little lotus blossom, you are awake.
00:35:04Oh, it is you.
00:35:07I regret that it was necessary to interrupt your wedding, my dear, but perhaps it is
00:35:13fortunate the ceremony was not completed.
00:35:17It is better to be a sorrowing sweetheart than an inconsolable widow.
00:35:23Oh, oh, if it's my life you want, take it, but please, please don't harm Jack.
00:35:30Your life means nothing to me, but the life of your sweetheart I have pledged to my gods.
00:35:38Your Dr. Petrie shall die, just as my wife and little son died at the hands of those
00:35:45white devils, your countrymen.
00:35:49Oh, you fiend.
00:35:51You won't get him, I tell you.
00:35:53You won't get him.
00:35:54They'll put a guard around him.
00:35:56They'll protect him from you.
00:35:58That is why you are wrong, my child.
00:36:01He will gladly deliver himself to me.
00:36:04What do you mean?
00:36:05If he were threatened with torture, would you not come to him?
00:36:17I see that you understand me.
00:36:26Master, the aeroplane have come.
00:36:29Good.
00:36:30They have brought him.
00:36:31Ah, I was right in my prophecy.
00:36:37Your sweetheart is in my hands.
00:36:42He, he, he.
00:36:54Jack, Jack.
00:36:57He, he, he, he.
00:36:59He, he, he, he.
00:37:09You are a welcome messenger, Arling.
00:37:13You shall be rewarded.
00:37:16Much thanks.
00:37:17Great Lord.
00:37:19Remove the bandage that I may feast upon my hate.
00:37:29Good evening, Doctor.
00:37:31Fool!
00:37:32Invisible!
00:37:33You have brought the wrong man.
00:37:37And hold this miserable one to my call.
00:37:42I didn't know...
00:37:43But you shall still be rewarded, my fateful servant.
00:38:04I am sorry, Inspector.
00:38:06But the servant problem is a difficult one.
00:38:10I'd ask mercy for that poor devil, if I thought you knew the meaning of the word.
00:38:16It always gives me pleasure to prove you wrong, Inspector.
00:38:21I shall not have him killed.
00:38:27Sit down.
00:38:41So, we two meet again.
00:38:45It was inevitable, Doctor.
00:38:48Since the reports of your death were so greatly exaggerated.
00:38:54Did my resurrection puzzle you?
00:38:58Exceedingly.
00:39:00You see, I attended your funeral.
00:39:04I was deeply touched.
00:39:08I promise you that I will return the compliment.
00:39:17You will be amused at my death trick.
00:39:23The poison I drank was, as you see, not fatal.
00:39:29A discovery of your own, Doctor?
00:39:31Yes.
00:39:32At least the present ingredients.
00:39:35The theory is old.
00:39:38Your Shakespeare used it in Romeo and Juliet.
00:39:45I have used it several times on my enemies, with perfect success.
00:39:53As you will readily see, the beauty of it is that, apparently, they die.
00:40:01Then they awake, after three days, to find themselves in a coffin, buried, alive.
00:40:13Then they really die.
00:40:19The thought of inflicting two deaths on a victim delights my peculiar sense of humor.
00:40:28Yes, it would.
00:40:34In my own case, I have you to thank
00:40:40for observing the religious customs of my race.
00:40:44If an autopsy had been performed,
00:40:48I would have become my own victim.
00:40:50That would have delighted my sense of humor, Doctor.
00:41:02A cigarette?
00:41:08No, thank you.
00:41:11I prefer one of my own cigars, but in searching me, your men took my cigar case.
00:41:17Ah, I shall have it brought at once.
00:41:22Mr. Smith's cigar case.
00:41:27I'm afraid, for once, your plans have miscarried.
00:41:33If I'm not mistaken, you took Dr. Petrie's place,
00:41:37believing you could better handle any situation that might arise.
00:41:43And, of course,
00:41:46you arranged that your men would follow and rescue you.
00:41:51Precisely.
00:41:53But the one thing I didn't foresee and prepare for
00:41:56was an aeroplane.
00:42:00Did it not occur to you that even if your men did follow,
00:42:04they might be a trifle late
00:42:07and find you
00:42:08dead?
00:42:16The thought did occur to me, Doctor,
00:42:19I admit.
00:42:21But if it ended in your capture,
00:42:24I considered it quite worthwhile.
00:42:27Hmm.
00:42:29You see, I could scarcely ask anyone else
00:42:32to take the risk.
00:42:35I honor you for your spirit
00:42:37of sacrifice.
00:42:42But it would be
00:42:44impossible
00:42:45for your men
00:42:47to find you here.
00:42:51The goddess of fortune
00:42:53has put you into my hands
00:42:55and you shall not
00:42:58slip through them.
00:43:02Smith,
00:43:04you have been a powerful opponent.
00:43:07And without flattery,
00:43:09I admit
00:43:10that your removal
00:43:11will be
00:43:12a great relief
00:43:14to me.
00:43:15It's unusual
00:43:17for a death sentence
00:43:18to be so
00:43:19complimentary.
00:43:20I am not going
00:43:22to kill you.
00:43:24That's a pleasant surprise.
00:43:26Your mind
00:43:27is my enemy.
00:43:29I shall merely
00:43:32kill
00:43:32your mind.
00:43:40What do you mean?
00:43:48The black
00:43:50onyx bottle
00:43:52and have
00:43:54Arling
00:43:55brought in.
00:43:59I will
00:44:01show you.
00:44:08I have
00:44:09promised the
00:44:10honorable inspector
00:44:11to spare
00:44:13your life.
00:44:15How can I
00:44:16find you?
00:44:17But wait!
00:44:18I must
00:44:19still
00:44:20punish the brain
00:44:21that failed
00:44:22me tonight.
00:44:23good night.
00:44:44The potion
00:44:45paralyzes the brain
00:44:47immediately.
00:44:49And very soon
00:44:50he will be
00:44:51completely
00:44:52demented.
00:45:07And that,
00:45:08inspector,
00:45:10is what I am
00:45:11going to do
00:45:12to you.
00:45:21this strain
00:45:22is killing
00:45:23me.
00:45:24I think
00:45:24it might
00:45:25relieve my
00:45:25mind
00:45:26if I had
00:45:26a good
00:45:27cry,
00:45:27don't you?
00:45:28Perhaps.
00:45:29Yes.
00:45:32yes.
00:45:45There, there,
00:45:48Sylvester.
00:45:52Jack,
00:45:53any news?
00:45:55No.
00:45:57Oh.
00:46:04The draft
00:46:05is ready.
00:46:08But don't
00:46:09think me too
00:46:09inhuman,
00:46:10my friend.
00:46:11I never
00:46:12prepare a poison
00:46:14without compounding
00:46:16an antidote,
00:46:17the ingredients
00:46:18of which
00:46:19are known
00:46:19only to
00:46:21myself.
00:46:22I shall
00:46:23restore your
00:46:23mind
00:46:24after my
00:46:26work is
00:46:27completed.
00:46:28Of course,
00:46:29if I should
00:46:30happen to be
00:46:31killed by your
00:46:32blundering
00:46:33assistance,
00:46:34I should
00:46:35hate to
00:46:35think of
00:46:36your future.
00:46:37Horrible.
00:46:39But quite
00:46:40worthwhile if I
00:46:41could be sure
00:46:42of your death.
00:46:43Flattery,
00:46:44inspector,
00:46:45flattery.
00:46:47is there any
00:46:49last request
00:46:50before we
00:46:51begin
00:46:52our little
00:46:53experiment?
00:46:56Perhaps you
00:46:57should like to
00:46:57write some
00:46:58record for
00:46:59your memoirs.
00:47:00Hmm?
00:47:01No.
00:47:02Yeah.
00:47:03But I
00:47:04haven't eaten
00:47:05since before
00:47:07the wedding.
00:47:08Oh.
00:47:11It takes
00:47:12time to
00:47:13eat.
00:47:15And during
00:47:16that time
00:47:17you'd think
00:47:17you might
00:47:18work out
00:47:18a solution
00:47:19to save
00:47:20yourself
00:47:21from this.
00:47:26I advise
00:47:27you not
00:47:28to put
00:47:29it off.
00:47:32Would you
00:47:33question?
00:47:33Do you
00:47:34do?
00:47:34Orly?
00:47:36Come on.
00:47:39You still
00:47:40are hungry?
00:47:43Very well.
00:47:45I do not
00:47:46wish to appear
00:47:46a poor host,
00:47:48so I shall
00:47:49dine with you
00:47:49myself.
00:47:52And this
00:47:53shall be
00:47:54served as
00:47:55your
00:47:55liquor.
00:47:58You will
00:47:59pardon me
00:48:00a moment.
00:48:02I must
00:48:03give my
00:48:03personal attention
00:48:04to the ordering
00:48:05of so
00:48:06important a
00:48:07meal.
00:48:09I might
00:48:10add
00:48:11escape
00:48:12is
00:48:12impossible.
00:48:13Every exit
00:48:15is guarded.
00:48:27Are you
00:48:28all right?
00:48:29Where's Jack?
00:48:31Quite safe
00:48:31at home.
00:48:32Shh.
00:48:33An airplane.
00:48:35Searching for
00:48:35us.
00:48:36Not yet.
00:48:38they're
00:48:39watching
00:48:39for my
00:48:40signal.
00:48:47What's
00:48:47there?
00:48:48My cigar
00:48:49case.
00:48:49But also
00:48:50a gun
00:48:50for signal
00:48:51lights.
00:49:04Come.
00:49:08watch that
00:49:09door.
00:49:38you think they
00:49:38saw it?
00:49:39We can only hope
00:49:39so, my dear.
00:49:41You'd better
00:49:41go back.
00:49:43What spoon
00:49:44aren't you
00:49:44going to do
00:49:44to you?
00:49:45Nothing if you'll
00:49:46help me.
00:49:47Now listen to me,
00:49:48Leah.
00:49:52I think it is only
00:49:53the air made.
00:49:55But if it should be
00:49:57attacked, use these
00:49:58hand grenades.
00:50:00They are powerful
00:50:01enough to blow to bits
00:50:02a score of men.
00:50:04The door's unbolted.
00:50:05Watch for my signal.
00:50:25Unfortunately, most of these dishes were prepared for me and are Chinese.
00:50:30These, I hope your palate will not be outraged.
00:50:36Is that?
00:50:40This is bird's nest soup.
00:50:48The condemned man ate a hearty dinner.
00:50:52Are you sure the signal came from the old Wilton Dye Works?
00:50:55Yes, sir. I made certain.
00:50:56Good. Let's go.
00:50:57All right. You take the upper road.
00:50:58We'll pick up some more men.
00:51:03Are you eating slowly
00:51:05to delay your fate?
00:51:08Or is it that you do not enjoy your eggs?
00:51:12They are a bit gamey.
00:51:14We consider three years
00:51:16the proper age for eggs.
00:51:18Only three years?
00:51:20Hmm.
00:51:22Perhaps some condiments
00:51:23would disguise the oriental flavor.
00:51:25No, really.
00:51:27I prefer the original.
00:51:29Fifty million Chinese can't be wrong.
00:51:32Ha!
00:51:33A brave man
00:51:35to the last.
00:51:37Hmm.
00:51:39And this, inspector,
00:51:41is a shark's pin.
00:51:49Hmm.
00:51:51Hmm.
00:51:51Hmm.
00:51:52Hmm.
00:51:53Hmm.
00:51:54Hmm.
00:51:55Hmm.
00:51:55And with this course,
00:51:57we serve our
00:52:00liqueur.
00:52:07Let's drink, inspector,
00:52:11to your courage,
00:52:13and also to that brilliant brain of yours,
00:52:16which I regret to add
00:52:18will presently cease to function.
00:52:25Keep still.
00:52:26One sound,
00:52:27and I'll plunge this knife in your throat.
00:52:30Listen to me, doctor.
00:52:32Give me your word
00:52:33that Lady Agatha,
00:52:34Leah,
00:52:34and myself
00:52:34are given immediate freedom,
00:52:36or I'll kill you instantly.
00:52:41Don't cry out.
00:52:46Smith,
00:52:47I am disappointed in you.
00:52:51You must know
00:52:52that I would be prepared
00:52:54for some such emergency.
00:52:57If I am found dead,
00:53:00my servant has orders
00:53:02to put to death
00:53:03not only you,
00:53:05but Lady Agatha
00:53:06and Leah
00:53:08as well.
00:53:09I'm not afraid,
00:53:11Mr. Smith.
00:53:12You do what you think is best.
00:53:13You have courage, Leah,
00:53:15but unfortunately,
00:53:18the inspector is a sentimentalist,
00:53:20and the Englishman
00:53:22cannot bear the thought
00:53:23of women being tortured.
00:53:26You may be willing
00:53:27to suffer death
00:53:28to defeat me,
00:53:30but not incurable insanity.
00:53:33Hmm.
00:53:36unless you give me
00:53:37your word
00:53:38to release us.
00:53:39One twist of this,
00:53:43and I'll force this
00:53:45drink down your throat
00:53:46and destroy the brain,
00:53:47which alone
00:53:49knows the antidote.
00:53:54Had I been
00:53:55in your position,
00:53:56my first move
00:53:58would have been
00:53:58to empty that cup.
00:54:00Nine chances to ten,
00:54:02you've already done so,
00:54:03but...
00:54:04Prepare to take
00:54:05the chance,
00:54:06then, doctor.
00:54:07I've no time
00:54:08to argue.
00:54:11You...
00:54:12You win!
00:54:15You win.
00:54:20I give my word.
00:54:22Your word of honor?
00:54:24My word of honor.
00:54:27I promise to return
00:54:29you and the two women
00:54:32unharmed to greenwood towers.
00:54:35But in exchange,
00:54:36I must be guaranteed safety
00:54:39for myself and my servants.
00:54:42I'll give you six hours.
00:54:44Five will be quite sufficient.
00:54:47Very well.
00:54:47It's a bargain.
00:54:49I have a tingling curiosity
00:54:52to know if you have been
00:54:55threatening me
00:54:55with an empty cup.
00:54:57Will you satisfy it?
00:55:06I should have been
00:55:07disappointed otherwise.
00:55:14Look out!
00:55:15The bombs!
00:55:16Take cover!
00:55:19Wait!
00:55:27Hurry up, men!
00:55:28Hurry up!
00:55:29Come on!
00:55:30All right!
00:55:31Hurry up, men!
00:55:32Break down the door!
00:55:34It is your men,
00:55:35inspector.
00:55:37Since their arrival
00:55:38makes it impossible
00:55:39for you to keep
00:55:40your part of the bargain,
00:55:42certainly I am
00:55:43released from mine.
00:55:47You silly beast!
00:55:49Miss, get me out!
00:56:00Shane!
00:56:02Kill that man!
00:56:07I had you! Honey, through that door!
00:56:11Damn it, push!
00:56:17Miss, where's Leah? Who's got her out there?
00:56:23I am but slightly wounded, Inspector.
00:56:26It is not the end of the story.
00:56:29Only the end of another chapter.
00:56:34Oh, Smith, I can't stand this any longer.
00:56:37Why don't you let me get out and do something?
00:56:40I know what you're going through.
00:56:41But you can see for yourself that everything possible is being done.
00:56:45All the police and the British Isles are on the lookout.
00:56:48Every port is being watched.
00:56:51Harding has 50 fake men scouring the city.
00:56:54And if anyone can find him, Harding care.
00:57:05Yes, sir.
00:57:06Have you got that Chinaman Chang to talk you?
00:57:09Not yet, sir.
00:57:11Keep trying.
00:57:12Right, sir.
00:57:19Hello, Harding?
00:57:21Oh, that you, Harris?
00:57:25What?
00:57:26You've lost Harding?
00:57:29Where?
00:57:30By the river?
00:57:32How long ago?
00:57:35Put every man you've got into finding him.
00:57:38Yes, at once.
00:57:40You're good.
00:57:41Yeah.
00:58:09And now you have you here.
00:58:30Repeat after me, Inspector Smith.
00:58:37Inspector Smith.
00:58:39Harding talking.
00:58:42We've got him.
00:58:44I'm coming for you in the car.
00:58:49We'll need Dr. Petrie.
00:58:54Now speak in an excited tone.
00:58:58Inspector Smith, Harding talking. We've got him!
00:59:02I'm coming for you immediately in the car. We'll need Dr. Petrie.
00:59:13Harding's on the phone, sir.
00:59:14Harding?
00:59:17Yes, Harding.
00:59:19Inspector Smith, Harding talking. We've got him.
00:59:22I'm coming for you immediately in the car. We'll need Dr. Petrie.
00:59:26What about Leah?
00:59:29He's so excited, he rang off.
00:59:31Well, what did he say? What's up?
00:59:32Get your hat, Petrie. Harding has got food. We'll wait for him below.
00:59:37Yes, I know, but Smith, just look here.
00:59:47Hello, Harding.
00:59:49Inspector Smith.
00:59:50Yes.
00:59:55Harding, we've left Smith behind.
00:59:58Or driver. Driver.
01:00:03Harding, what are we doing in this car?
01:00:06Harding, the dr-
01:00:08Harding!
01:00:20Harding!
01:00:29It will please you to know, Dr. Petrie, that your health is perfect.
01:00:35You recover quickly.
01:00:38Where's Leah?
01:00:39Where's Leah?
01:00:40Leah is here and safe.
01:00:43Now that you've got me, you let her go!
01:00:46Those details can be discussed later.
01:00:50I have a present and very urgent need for your professional services, Doctor.
01:00:56What do you mean?
01:00:58You see, your friend's bullet reached its mark.
01:01:04It is embedded here, near the base of my skull.
01:01:10Partial paralysis has already set in because the bullet impinges on a nerve.
01:01:17Any physician I might call in would be professionally bound to turn me over to the police.
01:01:26My price, I pay for being such a sought-after celebrity.
01:01:39What is this to do with me?
01:01:41You, Dr. Petrie, I know to be one of the most skillful young surgeons in London.
01:01:49This operation is delicate, but not necessarily dangerous.
01:01:55In fact, it can be done under a local anesthetic.
01:02:00I intend that you shall operate and remove the bullet.
01:02:09Very well, I'll operate.
01:02:12I can read the thought in your mind, my young friend.
01:02:18In such a delicate spot, the knife will slip a little and your enemy is gone.
01:02:28Is it not so?
01:02:31I'll do the best I can.
01:02:34I can't do any more than that.
01:02:36You can and you will do more than that.
01:02:41Tonight you will be the most skillful surgeon in London.
01:02:46And the operation will be eminently successful.
01:02:50Or Leah will remain in our present condition forever.
01:02:59For ever.
01:03:01What have you done to Leah?
01:03:09Bring Miss Leah in.
01:03:21Leah!
01:03:37Do not tighten her.
01:03:40Merely observe her.
01:03:46I have taken her mind, doctor.
01:03:52And only I can restore it.
01:03:56But you shall have it back for the successful operation.
01:04:04And now your hand will not slip, will it, Dr. Petrie?
01:04:12Oh, Leah.
01:04:14Oh, Leah.
01:04:15Thanks, bud.
01:04:16Thank you, for the rest of us.
01:04:16Thank you, so.
01:04:25Hmm.
01:04:30Okay.
01:04:41Let's do it.
01:04:42Oh, how are you?
01:04:46Are you ready?
01:04:51Yes.
01:04:54I have no instruments.
01:04:56I think I have all that is required.
01:04:59I do considerable dissecting myself.
01:05:04Let us go.
01:05:15Johnson, bring Chang in this room.
01:05:18Watch him carefully.
01:05:19Yes, sir.
01:05:22Baker, come with me.
01:05:23Very good, sir.
01:05:52Johnson, I want you a moment.
01:05:58Is Chang still unwilling to make a statement?
01:06:01Yes, sir.
01:06:02Well, watch him carefully.
01:06:04Under no circumstances must he be allowed to escape.
01:06:07Right, sir.
01:06:14Inspector, Inspector, he has escaped.
01:06:17It's all right, Johnson.
01:06:18I'd planned it.
01:06:19He escaped through that window and is now being followed.
01:06:22I'm hoping he's dazed enough from his womb to lead us to Fu Manchu.
01:06:29The temptation to kill me must be very great, Doctor,
01:06:36since you must realize that our bargain concerning Lear
01:06:39does not alter my promise to my gods.
01:06:45My first act, when I am recovered,
01:06:50after curing Lear, of course,
01:06:53will be to take your life.
01:06:58But remembering Lear, you will control yourself.
01:07:07I feel perfectly safe in your hands.
01:07:17The first change to a warehouse on the river.
01:07:19I'm positive it's Fu Manchu's hiding place.
01:07:21I'll show you the way, sir.
01:07:22All right.
01:07:23Come with me.
01:07:23Jackson, you follow me.
01:07:25Yes, sir.
01:07:36I've finished.
01:07:39You operated just in time.
01:07:42Now, pull your shoulders, sir.
01:07:44What?
01:07:45Who?
01:07:45Hey!
01:07:46Louie, you there, Louie, you there!
01:07:47Orly!
01:07:51Quick!
01:07:53Don't shoot!
01:07:55No, no, no, don't.
01:07:57Let him.
01:08:01Good evening, doctor.
01:08:03Good evening, inspector.
01:08:06Don't hurt him.
01:08:08See how solicitous the doctor is of his patient.
01:08:12What do you mean?
01:08:13I've just operated on him.
01:08:14Nothing must happen to him.
01:08:15If your men will release me,
01:08:17in the next room I will show you why the doctor is so concerned.
01:08:22It's Leah.
01:08:23Yes, Leah.
01:08:24Do anything that he asks.
01:08:26Release him.
01:08:29Your men must stay here quietly.
01:08:33Excitement might put Leah beyond my power to restore her mind.
01:08:51Before I cure Leah, I must ask another favor.
01:08:55This time from Inspector Smith.
01:08:59What is it?
01:09:01I must walk out of that door a free man, Smith.
01:09:06And I must be allowed to leave England unharmed.
01:09:10I'll not agree to that.
01:09:12Why, Smith, think of what you're saying.
01:09:14For Leah's sake, for my sake.
01:09:16Or do anything he asks.
01:09:17A nice problem, Inspector.
01:09:20And the villain holding all the cards.
01:09:26I can see that you are wavering already.
01:09:29You can't refuse your friend's request.
01:09:33You can't leave the poor girl in this condition.
01:09:36England would never forgive you.
01:09:38You promised never to return to England?
01:09:41Gladly.
01:09:43I prefer the sun of the Orient to your climate.
01:09:47Very well.
01:09:49Then I agree.
01:09:50Then.
01:09:52Come, Leah.
01:09:55Sit in this chair.
01:09:56Come here.
01:10:17Drink deeply.
01:10:21Drink deeply.
01:10:27There.
01:10:31Watch her, Doctor.
01:10:34She will recover in a moment.
01:10:41And now, Inspector, since you are also a man of your word,
01:10:45are you ready to give me safe conduct to the boat?
01:10:49I'll escort you myself.
01:10:51Remember, you promised never to return.
01:10:55I hold promises very sacred, my friend.
01:11:00Jack.
01:11:02Yes, dear.
01:11:03For example,
01:11:05I promised Dr. Petrie to return Leah's sanity.
01:11:10That I have done.
01:11:11There remains but one promise unfulfilled.
01:11:15To avenge the death of my wife and child,
01:11:18I have promised the gods of my ancestors
01:11:22Dr. Petrie's life.
01:11:24No, no.
01:11:25Stand still.
01:11:26If one of you moves or cries out,
01:11:29I will pull this contact pin
01:11:30and we shall all be blown to death.
01:11:34I shall welcome death.
01:11:36For Dr. Petrie will die with me.
01:11:38Then my life's work will be finished.
01:11:41But Dr. Petrie can save you all by taking his own life.
01:11:46No, no, no.
01:11:48To show you that I am not entirely devoid of feeling,
01:11:52I have arranged a quick and painless death.
01:11:56In the white bottle on the top shelf is a potion
01:12:02which will immediately blot out your existence.
01:12:06You are brave and will not hesitate
01:12:09to sacrifice your life for those you love.
01:12:12I shall not wait.
01:12:14Drink.
01:12:15In ten seconds it will explode.
01:12:18If you will drink the poison,
01:12:20I will throw this bomb into the river.
01:12:22If not, see!
01:12:25I have pulled the pin!
01:12:26I'll drink it!
01:12:37It's all over, Petrie.
01:12:40There are no more chapters.
01:12:42The book is closed.
01:12:44Is everything all right?
01:12:48I knew it would all come out all right.
01:12:51I never worried for a moment.
01:13:05After the lunar life of Mindsetting
01:13:07I don't know my job here.
01:13:12If you stay up all right,
01:13:13to open up the heap 123
01:13:13follows us in the building.
01:13:13Thanks besides press the end of the building.
