Willard and Dibs react to what 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said about Brandon Aiyuk's impending arrival to team headquarters.
Transcript
00:00I was doing the Google of where their offices are, and they are at 4949 Centennial Drive,
00:06so it literally is basically on the same footprint. I know it's a big footprint, so
00:11I don't know if it's connected to the stadium or if it's a little bit off, maybe it's substation,
00:16but I am fascinated to see how the next 45 minutes goes. If he has already landed,
00:23and he's on his way, and the PD are there with a warrant, and you've got the team over here,
00:27and you've got the coach saying he doesn't even care. He's got zero interest. I just wonder how
00:33the next hour, an hour and a half goes. Well, I hear you, and I'm interested too. I don't know
00:41that we're going to get the drama and finality that it feels like we're going to get. I actually
00:47think we just got it. That was a fascinating way to handle the press availability for Kyle Shanahan.
00:56Believe you me, we know this because we're talking to the folks out there. There are a lot more media
01:01there today than there normally are, and everybody showed up, drove all the way to Santa Clara to get
01:07answers from Kyle Shanahan, and in about seven questions, he used about nine words, and my question
01:14now becomes this. You want to know what the follow-up question is to Kyle Shanahan? Why did you and
01:19John
01:19Lynch make this sort of sound like you were open and, and, um, you know, willing to discuss
01:27stuff earlier in the week? What's the question? They didn't really, but they kind of did. Both of
01:33them, when pressed about the idea of a reunion, said, you never say never. You never close the door
01:40to anything. That's what you said earlier in the week, and then today, now it's time to really answer
01:45the questions, and to listen to Kyle Shanahan's voice. He's like, get Brandon out of my face. Don't
01:52ever come around here no more. Tom Petty. You are not welcome here. You are not on this team. You
01:58will
01:59never be on this team. Guns up. That was what I heard today, and I support the living hell out
02:06of
02:06that. I just kind of wish they had said that earlier in the week, and maybe it's a lawyer thing.
02:11It's a total
02:12lawyer thing. So I get it, but like, I mean, we've spent three days here on this station with people
02:18kind of, you know, and I know you and I were never in on this, but a lot of people
02:22are like, huh?
02:23Wide receiver injuries? Maybe this, maybe that. He didn't kill anyone. Could we this? Could we over
02:28here? You heard today what the 49ers think of Brandon Iyuk. Bleep you don't ever come back. Well,
02:36Kyle is focused on football, and until somebody tells him that they have to make a roster move,
02:41and maybe he's going to lose one of the people that he's counting on to play football because
02:45Iyuk will be on the roster, quote unquote. That's all that he's focused on, and I love the way he
02:51answered all the questions because he's thinking about the Raiders, which is now 47 hours away.
02:57He's got to take on the Raiders, and so he's not worried about all the business stuff, and I think
03:01that John Lynch, in his comments throughout the week, it's been very much like legalese because
03:06if you come out and you say, there's no way he's going to be on our team, well, then maybe
03:11the Iyuk people can say, you know, they're defaming us, and he's under contract if he
03:16passes a physical, and blah, blah, blah. So I do think that they're doing it the right
03:20way, and Shanahan today was very focused on the football part of it, the roster part of
03:25it, and he's not thinking about Brandon Iyuk, and he's probably, honestly, not thinking about
03:30Ricky Pearsall or Dejan Stripling, and I know that those are different cases, but he's
03:35focused on who can play, who do I have, and what are we going to do on Sunday?
03:41You're exactly right. You're exactly right. We'll let you, we're going to play this for
03:46everybody again, so. Five questions, 90 seconds. Well, also, but what they said earlier in the
03:51week, I think this is important. 888-957-9570, you can weigh in on this. Half the Bay Area media
03:58went down there, and I do not feel like they got the barbecue that they showed up
04:03for. They, like, it's not over. No, but I'm like, this was Wally World now. For those
04:08of you who are old enough, pasta? No chance. Oh, he gets it. No, he gets it. This is Wally
04:13World. There you go. Everybody went to Santa Clara, and Wally World was closed. That's
04:22it. Okay, listen to Shanahan. First of all, this is Wednesday. How is, uh, Brandon Iyuk
04:27informed the team that he is reporting, uh, to the headquarters? I believe they talked
04:32to his agent. Do you expect him here, and what's your response to that? None. I have
04:38no expectation. Kind of moved on with that mentally and everything, and doing kind of
04:42how I talked to you guys two months ago. Nothing's really changed for me. Would you
04:46expect a resolution before he would potentially show up here then? Um, I wouldn't think so.
04:51I think we'd have to show up for stuff to happen. Is there a path where you guys could ask
04:56the league for a roster exemption, Kyle, where you revisit with him or consider your options
05:01before the trade deadline? Um, those are no questions I've asked, so I don't know. But
05:06I've asked zero questions about them. Okay, so it's not like Kyle sounds interested, but
05:10then this was kind of the money play, um, from Wednesday when they sort of got to the whole
05:16like, okay, dude, can you rule out this guy putting a Niner uniform on?
05:22There's no absolutes in life, so. There's no absolutes in life. John Lynch later in the
05:27week said, of course, of course, there's always an openness to anything. And Drew Rosenhaus,
05:33a good, credible guy, and we've worked with him before, and we will again. Okay?
05:38It does them no good to say, like, for Kyle to say, there's no chance he ever plays for
05:42us again. He said it today. Right. I mean, that, like, what's changed? What he said today
05:47is that. Brandon still hasn't shown, nothing is new from Wednesday to today. And I don't
05:52think that he was asked today if he could ever play for the Niners again. I think that
05:55Kyle was asked about, you know, the roster and, you know, will Brandon be here? And Kyle's
06:01focused on this week. You're right. He didn't use those words, but peep the words he did
06:06use, the tone he used. Listen to this. This is the full exchange. The whole media went
06:13to Santa Clara to talk IUC. They got one minute and 17 seconds out of Kyle. And that's in
06:20about seven questions. Listen to this.
06:23Kyle, there's buzz about Brandon IUC and Drew Rosenhaus coming and going to the business
06:29offices meeting with team officials. I, well, will you be, have any role in that?
06:33No. Talk about IUC. What's going to happen today? What's that? Talk about IUC. What's
06:40going to happen today? No clue. Your guess good as mine. What would you like to see
06:45happen? Good care of us. Is there an incentive for you guys to kind of have this thing just
06:52be over as quickly as possible with all the noise that's going around with it? It's been
06:57over for our football team for a long time. So it's not, I don't hear much except questions
07:01about him today, but it's not too big of a deal for me to answer.
07:05Is it your understanding that if he comes off the reserve list that he goes automatically
07:11onto the active list and that you guys would have to make a transaction to accommodate that?
07:18I'd have to ask a lot of questions to get that answer. I think it's complicated. So I haven't
07:23asked one question. So I look at this as zero, zero to do with our football team. Anything
07:29has zero to do with our football team, especially during the season, I will give zero thoughts
07:33to. But doesn't it affect your roster that affects your football team? I'm sure if it
07:38did, people would let me know. That's it. Great follow up by Matt Barrows there. Matt
07:44Barrows is, he's looking for the functional process of this all. But I think where that
07:49landed was you might in effect be talking to the wrong guy. Kyle Shanahan's not the head of
07:55the business office. Right. And John Lynch will not be available for comment at this
07:59point. And so it's all lining up perfectly from their standpoint, as far as Kyle being
08:03able to say, you know, a couple of days ago, you know, nothing is ever ruled out. And then
08:08today he's focused on the roster and who he has. He's not even thinking about Brandon
08:12Ayuk, of course. So you, you mentioned, he doesn't use the words like Brandon will never
08:18play for our football team again, but you see the difference between on Wednesday. Well,
08:22there's no absolutes in life. And then today, Kyle says, this has been over for us for a long
08:29time. Yep. It's over. They didn't say that on Wednesday. But why would you say that on
08:36Wednesday? Why'd you say it today? Because today it's like, it's been over for a long
08:41time. And so now you're focused on this team. And on Wednesday, you're probably thinking,
08:45you know, nothing's ruled out. P.S. Send us a seventh round pick and you can have him.
08:50Yeah. By the way. Well, I mean, nobody's trading for this guy. Probably not. But I mean,
08:56probably not. Well, it gives you no advantage to be definitive on Wednesday. And now he's
09:01asked questions about like Ayuk, Ayuk, Ayuk. And he's talking about the roster. This is a
09:05lawyer issue. This is not a football thing. I don't think it's a football thing for any
09:09other team. The question is, is will someone ever take a chance on Brandon in the future?
09:14The idea of giving up draft capital for him is absolute, like that's maniacal. A GM that
09:23would send a draft pick, I don't care if there's 80 rounds. You send an 80th round pick to the
09:30Niners for Brandon Ayuk, you're fired. Career over. Wow. That is not happening. And they know
09:37that. So again, I'm not being critical here. It's a little bit of a head scratcher here,
09:42though, that they answered the questions earlier in the week, the way that they did.
09:47And they made people feel like, you know, I mean, he's a good receiver and we do kind of need
09:53receivers. This flew under the radar for me. Did you all hear the way George Kittle answered this
09:58yesterday? George Kittle was asked in his locker. Do we have a grandie? Yeah. George Kittle was asked
10:03in his locker about Ayuk and listen to this. Do you think he gets in the facility? Do you think
10:11he gets
10:11John or Kyle? Don't ask me. I'm a conspiracy guy. Is there a conspiracy?
10:18He asked the media, they're like, what about Brandon showing up in the facility? He goes,
10:24do you think he's getting in the facility? That's one of the 10 year wall team leaders,
10:32maybe one of the greatest team leaders this team has ever known. And he asked the media,
10:37do you think we would even let him in the building yet? There's been discussion within
10:44the last 48 hours about him playing football for the 49ers this year. So I just, the whole thing is
10:52interesting this, but that's, that's what I'm taking away from a week of, of learning about this
10:57and listening about this. This is not a foot ball story. This is a financial story. This is a legal
11:06story. This is a league story. I wonder how many people do we know? I just learned this earlier
11:11today. The idea that Brandon owes $13 million to the 49ers. Do you want to know who put that out?
11:17Not the Niners, the league, the league sent a note to Drew Rosenhaus and Brandon and said,
11:24you owe 13 million to the Niners. It's not from the Niners. The league office sent that.
11:29Yeah. And we'll see about that. Like the league office can say that. And then the NFL PA,
11:34the players association can say otherwise. And so what you said in the crossover had me laughing
11:39about the movie title, let there be lawyers, not let there be blood, which was an awesome movie,
11:44but let there be lawyers. And so now you've got your four suited lawyers with briefcases and
11:50Iuke and Drew and his team. And we're going to go ahead and have a, have a big case. And
11:54then
11:54we're going to appeal and you're going to appeal. And this thing's going to drag out forever.
11:58I'll ask you this. You ever seen the NFL losing court in your whole life?
12:01Uh, yes. They lost to the USFL back in 1984. Okay. And they had to pay $3.
12:07Okay. So it's been, uh, 40, I think Al Davis got them once too. 42 years and they lost three
12:15bucks.
12:16I'd have to look at all the cases, but I thought Al Davis might've gotten a dub on the league.
12:20I'd like to wish Drew Rosenhaus and Brandon Iuke the best of luck. You ain't winning this period.
12:26You ain't winning this period.
