00:00Now back to 95.7 The Game's Blue and Gold Summit,
00:04live from Jack's Restaurant and Bar in Pleasant Hill.
00:07Let's go!
00:08Let's go!
00:09Hey!
00:12Hey!
00:13Hey!
00:15Y'all look good.
00:16This is the part where the drinks start to set in,
00:19so you're looking even better.
00:21Thank you so much for being here.
00:23Jack's Restaurant and Bar, Pleasant Hill, Blue and Gold Summit.
00:26It's brought to you by Ashby Lumber, your trusted building partner.
00:29All guests on 95.7 The Game appear on the River Islands guest line.
00:33Is it a time for you to discover the islands?
00:35River Islands and Lathrop, the gang's all here.
00:37The Morning Roast, Stiney and Goob, Willard and Dibbs,
00:40all here with you talking out what has been an eyebrow-raising Warrior season already.
00:45Here's where it gets fun.
00:47Where are you on Draymond Green?
00:50Boy.
00:51That's a loaded question.
00:52Where are you all on Draymond Green?
00:55So, look, here.
00:57It's a mixed bag.
00:58Yeah, it's a lot of moans and groans, but cheers, too.
01:01Mark, who's probably been the most vocal critic of Draymond Green the last six or seven years?
01:06Who do you think?
01:07You think you mean?
01:08No.
01:08Well, okay, you mean on this station?
01:10Just in general, yeah.
01:11I mean, you're up there.
01:12Okay.
01:12So, like, there's no doubt I ride Draymond hard when it comes to certain shenanigans.
01:17They definitely still need him.
01:19We were talking about Christos Porzingis in the last segment, right?
01:22That was part of why Christos made sense is because it allowed Draymond to play the four to start games
01:30so he doesn't have to go banging, getting into foul trouble early in games.
01:34And navigating the regular season, having a legitimate big alongside of him makes a lot of sense.
01:40My bigger gripes with Draymond is $28 million.
01:43How many people are paying him that?
01:45He's got the ball in his hands so much he refuses to shoot.
01:48It clogs up the offense.
01:49But this team right now absolutely still needs him situationally, defensively, to close out games.
01:58The problem that I find with this team is they're starting with that third player alongside Steph and Pods.
02:04And when you go with those two, your perimeter defense isn't good, right?
02:08Like, it's not great.
02:09So you have to play another guy who's kind of a one-way player.
02:12Maybe it's Will Richard, GP2, you know, whomever.
02:16You're short.
02:17You're really short.
02:18And when Draymond at center is 6'6", like, Yaxel is the only big guy on that lineup.
02:24And he's usually out on the perimeter.
02:25It's not Dray's fault.
02:27But the opening of these games in the first two weeks has exposed their perimeter defense and lack of a
02:34rim protector.
02:35And that's why I think Charles Bassey has been such a revelation.
02:38He's just being seven feet.
02:40But you don't think he's a net negative?
02:42Not yet.
02:43Because they still need him.
02:44Look, Wemby's on the schedule coming up.
02:46But Jokic will get another chance at him.
02:49He's a great post-defender situationally still.
02:52He really is.
02:54It's all the other stuff, meaning navigating 30 minutes.
02:58He should not be playing more minutes this year per night than he has the last three years.
03:03That's not smart.
03:04I disagree with you, Butch.
03:05I think that ship has left the dock.
03:07What do you mean?
03:07In regard to it's a must that they need him right now.
03:11And I think it wasn't, you know, it was ironic that Steve Kerr talked about the turnovers.
03:17And it was kind of weird.
03:18Like, oh, turnovers?
03:19What are you talking about this offseason?
03:21And Draymond and Steph were a part of that.
03:23Well, what can Steph do to offset his turnovers?
03:25Go for 30?
03:26Go for 40?
03:27Sometimes 50?
03:28What is Dre bringing to the table?
03:30And right now he's bringing nothing to the picnic.
03:33We were told he was going to let him fly from three.
03:36But all of us that play basketball know it takes energy to exert a shot.
03:40And this is the lowest volume threes he's taken after the coach sold us and told us we were going
03:46to get more.
03:47I think, and it's okay, Draymond, if you're listening to this, getting ready for the game,
03:51we're watching his basketball mortality rot right before our eyes.
03:55And there is no wonder when he got thrown out, they were down 10, and Phoenix was going at him,
04:01they rallied.
04:01Can I ask you, man?
04:02Don't tell me, Steve Kerr, that was all we got fired up because of Draymond.
04:06No, it was because of basketball and what you had after Draymond is giving you the more than Dre is
04:12doing on a daily basis.
04:14And I'm just sick and tired of us kind of hiding in the weeds.
04:17Well, yeah, he does this and that, but he's not doing what he used to do.
04:20Can I ask you?
04:21But let's keep it real.
04:23Honest question here.
04:25When you bring up, because you bring it up a lot, that Draymond Green is not shooting his three,
04:30do you want him to do that because some reporter told us that he was going to?
04:34No, I'm asking, Mark, what are you doing on offense?
04:38You're dragging the offense down if you're not going to do that component of it.
04:43Because when you handled the rock, you were turning it over.
04:46We watched it.
04:47And you ain't guarding anybody.
04:48You want him?
04:49He is guarding people.
04:50Who?
04:51Are you kidding me?
04:53I'm asking you who.
04:54It wasn't against Phoenix.
04:55They were down 10 and they were going at him.
04:57Correct.
04:57And, oh, when he goes out, they go on a run.
05:00Because Bassie's tipping the ball.
05:02That's that game.
05:02Bassie's hitting the glass.
05:03That's that game.
05:04The stuff Draymond used to master.
05:05I don't see it anymore.
05:07Who did he guard when they played Denver?
05:09Jokic.
05:11Jokic takes the first month to get in shape.
05:14But he's got to go there.
05:15That's fine.
05:16Okay.
05:17No, I got you.
05:18I got you.
05:19He took good moments.
05:20I got you.
05:21I'll give you that, Mark.
05:22I'll give you that.
05:23The guys that he knows that aren't going to get away from a mark, like Giannis tonight, he can guard.
05:29But when you got all that Fred Astaire stuff and spacing and quickness, it ain't there.
05:35And that's why I'm looking at Bassie like, this dude's going to be more important as the games go by.
05:40Dibs, where are you on Draymond Green?
05:41I think Draymond is beyond a necessity.
05:44And his minutes are down.
05:46His assists are up.
05:47Turnovers are still a little bit of a problem.
05:48His minutes are down because he got thrown out of the game.
05:50They would be up if you otherwise look at them.
05:53No, that's actually up.
05:54It would be about on par with where they were last year.
05:56And that's a fair point.
05:57And he's not going to play back-to-backs.
05:59I do think that the basketball IQ thing is something that we can all look at the box score and
06:04not really see.
06:05And I think that the defense that he provides is not as good as it was at his peak.
06:09But he's still your best defensive player.
06:11And the Laker game, the opener, really shined a bright light on what he can't do.
06:16But nobody can.
06:18Walker Kessler, rim running.
06:19And Draymond's not ever going to be a guy who can do that and defend that.
06:23And I do think that what he provides the team, is it worth $27 or $28 million?
06:28No, but you signed that deal four years ago.
06:30And you knew when you signed that deal that the fourth year might be a little uncomfortable.
06:35And so, money-wise, it is.
06:38Steine, what if I told you?
06:40Yeah, go ahead.
06:41Yaxel and Draymond's relationship is what I'm hanging my hat on with Draymond.
06:46Not even on the court.
06:47He's been a great mentor for the rookie.
06:49Yeah, sure.
06:50Something.
06:50Hold on.
06:51Hold on.
06:52Hold on.
06:53I know you're going to say it's him and Horford and GP, too.
06:57Hold on.
06:58Hold on.
06:58We've been saying for years, these guys get after the rookies.
07:01Get after the young guys.
07:02It's the vets versus the rookies.
07:04They don't wrap their arms around them.
07:05And finally, which I think this is Draymond's last year in Golden State, by the way.
07:09I don't think he's coming back to the Warriors.
07:11He's finally wrapping his arm around a rookie.
07:13Doesn't that make your heart warm and fuzzy on the inside, Mr. Grinch?
07:16Tell them what we talked about today, Steine.
07:18I think that there are underlying issues right now with Draymond Green that we may not know about.
07:25Oh.
07:26Let's hear it.
07:27Okay.
07:27For example, we're eight games into the year, and Steve Kerr said we want him shooting eight threes.
07:36Man.
07:36Okay.
07:37Now I put myself in Draymond Green's position, who's been in the league 15 years
07:41and is the self-proclaimed smartest player in the NBA.
07:45I could see him being bothered by that.
07:47Well, he's shot seven threes so far.
07:49Exactly.
07:50All year.
07:50Oh, you mean eight a game.
07:51Yeah.
07:51Exactly.
07:53He'll get to eight threes pretty soon.
07:54There's something about Draymond that I think he's like, oh, so you don't think I can play make anymore.
08:01All day.
08:01And you want me to do something that I know I'm not great at because the subliminal message is my
08:09bad miss three is better than my bad turnover.
08:13You preach it.
08:13You preach it.
08:14I'm not saying I'd hate.
08:16We just, that's.
08:18He's preaching.
08:19It's just kind of the way I look at it and the way Draymond might feel about it.
08:24You may be on to something.
08:26I think that's a very fair point.
08:28What Spadoni is saying, though, is not to be blown off.
08:30And it's not just.
08:31Remind me.
08:32I know.
08:32Well, it's not just.
08:33It's not just his relationship with Yaxel.
08:37Sure.
08:37I would like.
08:38Oh, can I address that?
08:39Please.
08:40I think Draymond's smart enough.
08:42There you go.
08:42Smart enough to know.
08:44Talk to him.
08:44That that can't be the reason why it falls apart.
08:49Talk to him.
08:49That he was threatened by Yaxel.
08:51Of course.
08:52So, so he is, he is smart.
08:55So, he is.
08:58Plus, he also knows Yaxel's good.
09:00I can't give you a Christmas.
09:00He can respect the game.
09:02If he didn't respect Yaxel, there'd be no shot.
09:05There we go.
09:05But he respects Yaxel.
09:06As he should.
09:08I believe that.
09:09But to me, and as usual, like we have to land somewhere in the middle.
09:14Are there issues with Draymond Green, whether they're underlying Stiney or the ones that are out in the open goo?
09:20I think that those are all obvious.
09:23And do you deal with them?
09:24Yes.
09:25But a relationship with Yaxel, the leadership in the room, the ability to guard people that nobody else can guard.
09:32The fact that he leads the team in assists and it's not close.
09:35And this team.
09:36Yeah, but he also leads the team in a turnover.
09:37No doubt.
09:40Actually, Yaxel leads the team in a turnover.
09:43I'm saying as a ball handler last year, he was a 2-1 turnover, assist and turnover ratio, which is
09:49horrific.
09:49I am not here to say he's perfect.
09:51But to Dibs' point, if you even want to call him a necessary evil, like he is still absolutely necessary.
09:58And my only point is, while there may be underlying issues, and I think the frustration is fair,
10:05I also think it's unfair to assess Draymond Green by the box score.
10:10That's what IQ 2-1.
10:12No, no, you don't have to do that because, see, to me...
10:14No, it goes deeper than that.
10:15No, no, no, no.
10:16But the whole league now has gone five threats.
10:19And this is where Guru is going.
10:20They did this to Tony Allen a decade ago.
10:23They said, Tony, you won't shoot.
10:26We are literally running you out of the gym.
10:28We're going to play four on five.
10:29And you guys are done.
10:31And the sad thing with Draymond is, I think Kirst says eight.
10:34He just means just take the open shot when it's there.
10:36And so you saw about the stats.
10:38How many times has he passed the ball with a bunny?
10:42I mean, a bunny.
10:43It's him in the rim.
10:43The finish is out there.
10:44Just look at the hoop.
10:46And look, I think the bigger question is not, is Draymond useful?
10:50He is useful.
10:51What is the role?
10:53How does it look like?
10:54How do you play him?
10:55Where do you play him?
10:56Would the Spurs be starting him?
10:58Probably not.
10:59Don't you get it?
11:01This is the beauty of this, though.
11:04It matters less now than it's ever mattered before.
11:09That's true.
11:10Because he's on his way out.
11:13I don't buy that.
11:14Why did they give him that year, Bush?
11:17Why did they give him that extra year?
11:19But we finally got to a point where, like, it's not all about Draymond.
11:23And this is the good part about championship or bust.
11:28It's like, have your year.
11:30Do what you want.
11:32Man.
11:32Like, and you're either leaving or your role is going to dramatically be reduced because
11:39we're better now.
11:41Do you think at any point this year he will accept coming off the bench?
11:44I don't.
11:45Do you think Steve Kerr would ever do that?
11:47I mean, it's happened in the past that he's been open to it.
11:51I know he's on record saying it.
11:53Draymond's on record saying he would do it.
11:54He might have a choice.
11:55I don't know if Steve's going to do it.
11:57He might have a crossover.
11:58He'd do it, but he doesn't want to do it.
12:00I mean, there are ways you can serve two masters there by starting him.
12:06Hey, Will, I want to say this, Will.
12:09What is starting him actually worth if he plays five minutes and he goes out?
12:12Like, it's almost ceremonial.
12:13Do they finish with him?
12:15But here's the problem.
12:15Their first quarter offense has been atrocious.
12:18And that's, they dig big holes.
12:21I'm not trying to get Ray 2 in the weeds, but they dig big holes and the spacing is a
12:25problem.
12:25Again, if you're good, do I love pods and Steph starting alongside your head?
12:28No.
12:29But if you're going to go that route, you're going to play probably a non-shooter alongside of them.
12:33And that's two non-shooters on the court together for five minutes to start a game.
12:39And Will, I'll say this to you all because we're family, right?
12:41It's a brotherhood.
12:42Is it perfect every day?
12:43No.
12:44Just like with any family out there.
12:46But I thought it was.
12:47I critique Draymond Green because he puts himself out there all the time.
12:51But one thing I will give credit to is how can I get mad?
12:54And I've talked to myself and said this.
12:56How can I be more upset when the Warriors always have his back in every turn?
13:02And I believe that's a compliment to Draymond Green.
13:04You've talked about it with the Niners.
13:06The Astani's brought it up.
13:08Butch, the things behind closed doors that we don't see.
13:11So I'm up here most often reacting to what I feel like, Draymond, how could you do that?
13:16But they have his back.
13:17They've had his back.
13:18And I'm like, okay.
13:20And Butch, I would have bet real quick my right arm he was getting multiple years.
13:24And I lost a bet in the drink.
13:25On the opt-out?
13:25Yeah, no, this past summer.
13:27And they said, you know what, Draymond, we're going to give you one.
13:30And it could be Calipari one and done, which was single at the end of his tenure here.
13:35Yeah, but here's the thing.
13:36I'll believe it when I see it.
13:38That's just the way I'm operating with Draymond.
13:40I think he's going to coach the team one day.
13:42But that being said, why did they give him the money?
13:44Because I don't think they wanted to give him two years and over $28 million.
13:47If they hire him before they hire Nicasa.
13:50Oh, boy.
13:52I'm looking for Joe Laker.
13:53They could be co-coaches.
13:55Both of them.
13:56I could be co-coaches.
13:57Guru, the other part is, and this is the hard part for me.
13:59Co-coach.
14:00As much as I want to run the guy into the ground.
14:02I got going in.
14:03I hear you.
14:03He gives you the Kawhi Leonard game.
14:05All right.
14:05And the Clippers playing game.
14:06Locked him up.
14:07And it's just like, God.
14:09I mean, he's special.
14:11I mean, what he did against Kawhi Leonard was unbelievable.
14:14What do you do the next game?
14:15You're probably not.
14:16I know.
14:17I know.
14:18I know.
14:19Honestly, if you get into April again, you're going to need Draymond Green in an April play-in,
14:24flash play-in, whatever.
14:25Exactly.
14:26And that's a perfect thing to kind of transition us to the next question.
14:30And, Gu, this is tailor-made for you.
14:33Let's dream for a second, if you will.
14:35Let's dream.
14:36Uh-oh.
14:36Because we all said we're not really sure at 5-3 what this team currently is.
14:42Because we do know that if things go well for the first half of the season, there are
14:47some reinforcements, in theory, that could join the team.
14:52There's also maneuvering that could happen on the market if you are in position.
14:57So, let's dream for a second.
15:00What is the absolute ceiling of this team?
15:04And if there is a world, fantasy though it may be, that the Warriors actually could get
15:12into contention, what does that look like?
15:15What would need to happen?
15:1650 wins.
15:17Dib said, I believe the sixth seed was 48 wins.
15:20That was the metric.
15:21So, I'm saying if this thing continues, we would watch this team out of nowhere win 50
15:26wins, make the qualify for the offs, not via the play-in.
15:30And then if you want me to really dream, Will, maybe we win a round or two in the playoffs.
15:35It all comes down.
15:36That's my dream.
15:37Before we even get to wins, it all comes down to health.
15:39Not only the Warriors would have to stay healthy.
15:41I'm assuming that.
15:42Jimmy would, again, we're talking dream scenario.
15:44Jimmy would come back 80%, 75% of what he usually is.
15:48Moody comes back 75%, 80% of what he is.
15:52Steph Curry stays healthy throughout the season.
15:54Yaxel stays healthy.
15:55Draymond, they find the fountain of youth.
15:57Okay, we're doing dream scenario here.
15:59And then other teams in the West have to get hurt.
16:01I'm being serious.
16:02Which is happening a little bit already.
16:04It's already happening in real time.
16:06We've already talked about the Thunder.
16:07I'm not a believer in the snowtime Lakers.
16:09We'll see with the Rockets.
16:10They had injuries in the past.
16:12And then we'll see with the Spurs.
16:13Like, you're asking dream scenario, Mark.
16:16Luck would have to find their way injury-wise.
16:18And I'm not rooting for that to happen.
16:20But it happens in sports.
16:22Injuries happen all the time.
16:23We saw it at the Boston Celtics with Jason Tatum before.
16:26So, you're asking the dream scenario.
16:28Other teams would have to get hurt.
16:30And the Warriors would have to stay healthy.
16:31Or even the draw would have to break their way.
16:332022, the number one seed, Phoenix.
16:35They got knocked out.
16:36Not that they couldn't have beaten them.
16:38But you do need health.
16:40And you need a certain amount of draw luck as well.
16:42Valkyrie's on line one.
16:43Minnesota.
16:44I don't think it was a good matchup for them.
16:46But they didn't have to play them, dude.
16:47But they were the two seed.
16:48They were a game out of being the one seed.
16:50When the Warriors won it last time, they were the three seed.
16:52So, I do think it's a little bit different.
16:54But for me, the ceiling of the dream scenario is probably Western Conference Finals.
16:59Because I think that even if there are other teams out there, I don't think that you can avoid the
17:05teams that are flat out better than you.
17:07But if you somehow get into a five or six seed, can you win a series?
17:11Yes.
17:12Can you win two?
17:13Possibly that would be the ceiling of the dreams.
17:16Yeah, I mean.
17:18We're talking about dreams.
17:20I know this is hard for you.
17:21Nightmares.
17:22And not reality.
17:23Okay, I'm having trouble envisioning them winning a playoff series if they get there.
17:29Because I don't think it's realistic that they're going to be four and above as great a season as they've
17:36had.
17:37And in order for them to win a series, let's run down the five things that have to happen.
17:44Number five.
17:45Curry's got to be Curry.
17:47Butler's got to be Butler.
17:50Lendenborg's got to be kind of a really good player like he is now in the postseason.
17:56Pods has to be.
17:57But they're still going to be playing maybe the Spurs.
18:01They might be playing the Spurs.
18:02They might be playing Houston that could win 60 games.
18:05How come nobody's brain went to the idea of the roster looking completely different?
18:10I was going to go there.
18:12Because I don't know.
18:12What a Jimmy Butler trade.
18:13Like, if we're going to dream.
18:16Like, okay.
18:17Well, I didn't let myself imagine that much.
18:20But it is on the table.
18:22Do you think they can get a player better than Jimmy Butler coming off an ACL?
18:25I don't.
18:26But, again, we're in a dream world.
18:28Like, I'm not.
18:29Well, that's why I'm putting Butler in the equation.
18:31Yeah.
18:32And, by the way, Jimmy Butler is potentially a pretty good player.
18:36But what I don't know, like, is what do they look like when they do.
18:42We do get through the holidays.
18:44What is the record?
18:45I'm already encouraged just by the fact that a five-game win streak happened.
18:51I would have bet against that.
18:52But what if I said to you the dream scenario is the Axel's an all-star
18:56and Steph's an all-star starter and they're all on the floor together
18:59and we just take it from there?
19:01Well, if they're both on the course together,
19:04that means they're going to be 33-17, something like that.
19:10They'll have to be really good.
19:12That's what I'm saying.
19:12Like, is that out of the realm if we're going to dream?
19:16I mean, this kid looks unbelievable.
19:18He does.
19:19For me, the dream part of the transaction would be you get something for Chris
19:48disgruntled who wants an extension and you've got money left over.
19:53He fills a need.
19:54I hate the contract.
19:56I can already admit that.
19:57But when he's out there, he's a pretty damn good player.
20:00I mean, there's also a way for this to be two deals.
20:02You know, if you do look back at the way Dennis Schroeder was acquired
20:05and then was used as a piece of a deal later down the road,
20:09I think that's the best-case scenario for Chris Stapps.
20:12So I don't think you're going to get a productive player out of this.
20:16But are there some things that can happen with unexpected wins,
20:21the production of Yaxel, relative health for Steph,
20:25and then Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody coming back to this team
20:28combined with transactions that actually make this a productive season
20:35in ways that we didn't expect?
20:36All right, Karl-Anthony Towns.
20:38This is, to me, what Lendeborg signifies, and it's significant.
20:44If you're asking me about Karl-Anthony Towns with Steph here
20:47and Lendeborg's not around, I have no interest in that.
20:52Now, you're telling me Lendeborg's a player, Curry's playing pretty well.
20:57How old's Cat now?
20:58He's 30.
20:5930.
21:00Now we've got a different ball game.
21:01Now I'm more interested in Cat.
21:04Now I'm thinking let's talk about it for sure.
21:08Yeah, and look, we're talking about him.
21:09He's good.
21:09He is good.
21:10I love him.
21:10And he played great in the playoffs last year.
21:12But they would need somebody that's going to help replace him
21:15because their Knicks are going to be in it.
21:17So it ain't about money falling off a dream.
21:20Oh, you're right.
21:21I apologize.
21:21I'm just going like extreme.
21:23Well, the question now becomes would you give up future first for Karl-Anthony Towns?
21:28Oh, man.
21:29Given where the draft is now, where the middle of the bottom is where you want to be
21:34and not the bottom of the bottom, I'm so reluctant to give it up.
21:38No, didn't we just learn our lesson there?
21:40Yes.
21:40We throw out the idea of picks, and it's not a face.
21:44It's not a person.
21:46Now it becomes a face and a person, and nobody wants to trade that pick anymore.
21:51I'll say it.
21:52I don't think I would trade Yaxo for next to anyone right now.
21:55I'm with you.
21:55Because it's not just about the player he is.
21:59It's about the experience that fans are going to have his whole career.
22:02It's about the finances.
22:04He's going to be, I heard Ethan Strauss.
22:06The greatest line.
22:07I mean, he's going to be 26 years old and in his prime and making $6 million.
22:12It's crazy.
22:13You can't do that in the NBA.
22:14His whole contract, his four-year contract, is worth less than Draymond this year.
22:19Exactly.
22:20That is insane.
22:21It's insane, and that's the slotted thing.
22:23And just all of you who are not yet ready for the draft and the lottery,
22:27keep your eyes on Patrick Gomba II, the big kid out of Duke.
22:31Uh-oh.
22:32Patrick Gomba.
22:33He was the first on Yaxo.
22:35He was calling Yaxo back in January.
22:37No, that was Spadoni.
22:39Stop.
22:39He's my guy.
22:40He's my guy.
22:41Nobody was any day.
22:42Nobody wants you to call us basketball.
22:44Seriously.
22:45I'm like, I don't even know what letters you're putting together when you say Yaxo Lindeborg,
22:49but he was trying.
22:51Anyway, it's the Blue and Gold Summit at Jack's Restaurant and Bar in Pleasant Hill.
22:56Brought to you by Ashby Lumber, your trusted building partner.
23:00We are not done yet.
23:01We are headed for the finish line, and in addition to talking more about the Warriors
23:06and sort of some bold takes that we all have up there, I think we got a little surprise,
23:12which is that some of you, some of the listeners on site are going to come up and have been
23:17told,
23:18ask us anything.
23:20AMA?
23:20Ask us anything.
23:22And so that...
23:22That'd be A-U-A.
23:23Oh, that's right.
23:24Shout out spelling.
23:25It's not all about you.
23:26All right.
23:28Summit.
23:2995-7 the game.
23:30Boom.
