Join Kevin Richardson on a walk with Thor’s pride, where six lions explore the reserve, investigate fresh scents, cool off by the water and burn off their energy. Thor starts out cranky, while playful moments, a thorn in a lioness’s paw and a brief disagreement between Thor and Charlie reveal the shifting dynamics of pride life. Along the way, Kevin explains how lions use scent and wind to track their surroundings, and why occasional squabbles are part of the group’s relationships. The walk also passes the reserve’s firebreaks and newly cut paths, offering a close look at wildlife care and lion behavior in a sanctuary setting. A relaxed, observational wildlife video for animal lovers, nature fans and anyone curious about how lions communicate, play and move together. Explore lion pride behavior, African wildlife, big cat encounters and animal sanctuary life through a guided lion walk, with natural commentary and engaging moments for wildlife viewing or background watching.

00:07He's such a bully. Having so much fun.
00:14Nez is always doing something silly. Right good morning everyone. Today I'm going to be taking
00:20Thor's group out for a walk. They are certainly full of beans and need to burn off a little bit
00:27of energy. Crazy cat.
00:57You're going to break my camera you nutter.
01:19Yeah so Thor always starts the walks off being a bit cranky. He lets off that steam and
01:28it gets better and better. I love to see the play. So cool.
01:40I actually love jolly. I love my girl. He nutter. Nez the nutter.
01:48Yeah everyone out and about. I love my girl. So you can see guys on the outside here we've
01:56been burning fire breaks. 20 meter fire break around the entire reserve and around their sanctuary.
02:06Naturally we don't want you know fires that get out of control like we had a few years back.
02:16And then not only do we have that fire break the actual burnt area but we also have this area
02:22which is also a fire break. Yeah the guys have been working together with working on fire
02:30and they are ahead of the game thankfully. Yeah lots of sniffing today. Sniff sniff sniff.
02:43Giving Mr Big a wide berth. Hello my boy. Hello my boy. Yeah he's on a mission old Thorey.
02:52Doesn't want Charlie near us. Smells in the air. Hormones. Is it you? Is it you? Which one is it?
03:07Somebody's giving off smells that are irresistible to Thor and Thor feels the need to keep Charlie at arm's length.
03:19So yeah but that should hopefully settle down as we get into the walk.
03:24Okay there's a bird. This is Jabari. That's the cops. And yeah I've said it so many times before.
03:35Jabari does not miss a thing. That lioness is always always always checking out what's going on.
03:46There we go. All of them on the fence line making their way down to the river.
03:54There we go. Thaw breaking trees.
04:15Ooh that caught his attention. You better go and check out what's happening with that Charles.
04:30You can hear the Impala alarm calling. And they're heading towards the hills.
04:41Old Lola is sitting there wishing.
04:45Oh yeah.
04:46Ahhh.
04:52I see him on the mountain backs of a tree.
05:02Oh God.
05:04So that's a tree.
05:15Let's find yourself some poo-poo, hey.
05:28Fresh warthog poop.
05:47Ah, the bully, I thought he was ahead.
05:52He was lagging behind.
06:01Pushing through.
06:12He's going to follow these guys, see what the water level's doing.
06:23I was taking her drink and push her in now.
06:34Still so much water, ooh, he almost fell in.
06:43I'm having so much fun.
06:49Nez is always doing something silly.
07:02Oh my goodness, now I've got to get across there with all my gear.
07:24Hello you crazy fools.
07:38All right, so guys, somebody was actually asking me the other day, what does a lion smell like
07:45when they are wet?
07:48And yeah, I can tell you now, caught a whiff of Nez as she walked past because she's been
07:54in the water.
07:54And immediately, wet dog came to mind.
08:00So that's what they smell like, wet dog.
08:12Got a thorn in her paw.
08:16Just a few times now, I had to stop and try and get it out.
08:23So yeah, guys, so the team has done a really awesome job in cutting these roads.
08:31So we've got multiple road networks here now in this camp.
08:39She's after something.
08:42Told you this lion does not miss anything.
08:49Jabari.
08:55Honestly, guys, I have no doubt, in my mind, that if Jabari was put out in the wild, she
09:07would...
09:08Ooh, there she goes.
09:14I don't know what that was, I think it was a warthog.
09:16I've seen some fresh warthog scat.
09:21So, could be.
09:26I don't hear any noises, so maybe it was unsuccessful.
09:40I just find it incredible how they can sense and smell even see something through this grass.
09:50I'm standing way taller than them.
09:53Okay, my hearing is not the best, but certainly my eyes are not that bad.
10:00I'm always just so amazed by their capabilities.
10:07Just out of nowhere, they can pick something up and then hone in on it.
10:13Sometimes you think, when you're walking through the bush, it's just random.
10:19You go like, ah, they're just walking.
10:20But it's not random at all.
10:24They have scented something.
10:28And then they're heading in a direction.
10:30Sometimes to go around the scent, then to get downwind.
10:37So that their scent blows away.
10:41And then they can kind of sneak up on the prey as the wind blows.
10:46The prey scent toward them.
10:49So, yeah, typically they would do that.
10:57All right.
10:57Hello, boy.
10:58Oh.
11:01Hello, my boy.
11:15He can be so loving when he wants to be.
11:23Loving, loving, loving.
11:37Another incredible thing about these lions is,
11:41I've seen it so many times in the wild where they split up on a hunt.
11:46And they go off in different directions.
11:49And just like magically, they suddenly all meet up.
11:53And you go like, how on earth did you guys do that?
11:57I mean, I'm trying to figure out and predict where they are going.
12:02But like, look at that.
12:05It's like magic.
12:06They just appear from nowhere.
12:08It just comes from nowhere.
12:14Like, honestly, guys, as a human, you'd be wandering around in completely the wrong direction.
12:22So, yeah, there's a lot more happening, a lot more going on than meets the eye.
12:27There we go.
12:32OK, so much.
12:58What are you doing there, Charlie boy?
13:37What are you doing there, Charlie boy?
13:58Alright guys, so just to give you a little bit of context of what happened there, Charlie
14:04had possession over this mud pit, Thor was actually just being nice, he wanted to come
14:10and rub on Charlie and roll around with him and Charlie was like uh-uh.
14:17So they had a little bit of a scrap, nothing serious and you could see Nege in the corner
14:26there just trying to stay out of harm's way, she's just like okay just guys I don't want
14:32to be part of your scrap and now you can see Charlie is like I'm not moving, I'm not moving
14:39this is my mud and I'm not going anywhere so he's just sitting there or lying there ignoring
14:45Thor, actually I love this time of the walk because everyone's kind of spent their energy
14:56a bit, most of it, they've run after things, they've scratched on things, they've sniffed
15:01ooh now they really had a little bit of a ward off and that was because Lola was coming
15:08in, well let me just rephrase that, I generally like these times or these moments because everyone's
15:21typically a lot calmer and then they all kind of gather together and lie down in the shade
15:30and groom and you know do what prides are meant to do but yeah sometimes with these two boys they
15:38can cause havoc with the girls and then the girls don't want to come near them and I know guys
15:44we have
15:45had a lot of you write in and say you know should should we not look at splitting this pride
15:51and I
15:52think you know I have answered this question before but I'll answer it again and I think the harm you
15:59cause by splitting the pride is far greater than the good they are generally a very coherent pride
16:08it's just every now and again they have their little tuffs and that is not atypical of what happens
16:14in a normal functioning line pride it's just you must realize that you as an outsider only get a snippet
16:22of what's going on in a pride you on your game drive you come across a pride typically they are
16:29sleeping or on a kill or on the move so you know when these lines are focused and on the
16:35move there's
16:36no time for scrapping if they're eating no time well there's scrapping when they eat but that's normal
16:42lines will scrap while they eat and if it's very hot the sun's high in the sky and they're tired
16:48they're going to sleep what does
16:57he's such a bully
17:03it does tend to happen
17:07is because there's no cubs in the pride
17:24the males would come and the females would come and the females would be in estrus and the males would
17:31then say hey hey let's have a little scrap as to who's going to be the guy who's going to
17:37get to mate
17:38first and they're typically a lot of people don't know this but they typically do take turns in mating
17:43so one once the the the dominant male has had his you know go and has had his turn then
17:52the less
17:53dominant the subordinate male will also have a turn at mating so actually when you look at the pride you
18:01don't know who uh cubs which males cubs they are um it's very hard to say so that's how it
18:11typically
18:11would go down so i'm just trying to get my camera here so typically that's how it would go down
18:18guys and
18:19then um the females would fall pregnant and there would be this like homeostasis within the pride it'd be
18:28this like happy state for 110 days because that's the gestation period of the lionesses and typically
18:34the lionesses would all come into what's known as a synchronous estrus so they'd all come into estrus at
18:41the same time and mate at the same time and conceive at the same time and have cubs at the
18:46same time
18:46and then they would nurse at the same time and these are the happy times for for lion prides because
18:52the males are happy the females are happy everyone's happy um but in captivity obviously
19:00we cannot let lions like tubari um breed uh reason is for those who don't know for those who
19:09who have been following me you will know uh there's no uh reason to be breeding lions in a captive
19:17environment
19:18because you're just perpetuating in my opinion a problem the problem is is just more lions in
19:24captivity and we have enough what we really need to be doing is opening up more land or habitat so
19:32that
19:32lions can have more space to to roam in and uh in so doing you can then house more wild
19:42lions in a
19:43particular habitat that is the name of the game not breeding lines in a captivity where they're going
19:48to stay um so yeah many many many moons ago we adopted that strategy uh and said no more um
19:59and so yeah
20:00unfortunately lions like jubari and nej and loli and indy are not gonna i'm not gonna feel what it
20:09feels like to be become a mother or um because we just don't want to perpetuate that problem yeah
20:27six lions safely home and that's where we're going to leave it guys bye george
20:33bye everyone hi yeah george did did they i told you how the people wished you happy birthday on the
