They may have lost their tails, but nothing slowed these two down! Rescued from a burned field at just three weeks old, these two serval kittens had a long recovery ahead of them. Dodo editor Valentina shares their journey alongside Deirdre and Dr. Venter from Wild And Free Rehab as they grow stronger and get closer to returning to the wild.

00:00These two soaked little kittens may not look like fighters, but Phoenix and Isha just survived
00:06an entire sugarcane field going up in flames. There was no sign of an adult serval. There were
00:15widespread burn wounds from the face to the tip of the tail. The workers have doused the two
00:21kittens with cold water, so they were still wet. These little servals had already survived
00:27something unimaginable, but without their mom surviving, the fire was just the beginning.
00:34My daughter, it was school holidays, and she took over the night feeds.
00:39It was emotionally hard to see. I didn't think they will survive.
00:47Every bottle was helping them grow stronger, and you can really see how they started to come back to life.
00:57We have to release each and every animal back to the wild. They have to contribute to their species
01:02and to the ecosystem. Their new enclosure wasn't just a place to play. It was their classroom.
01:08Put them in an enclosure with some obstacles to see how they will cope without their tails.
01:16This was where Phoenix and Isha could climb, explore, pounce, and just slowly learn how to be wild servals.
01:24They've learned how to cope without a tail, and they're doing remarkably well.
01:28Both of them are doing so well. By the end of this year, we will release them back into the
01:34wild.
