Moving day at the lion sanctuary turns into a careful shuffle of pride, camps, and personalities as Kevin Richardson and the team work through a full lion relocation. Some lions load easily, others need patience, and a few are left behind when meds, mobility, or timing mean they are not ready to move. Along the way, the video explains why lions are moved between camps: to give them fresh habitat, new smells, new stimulation, and a healthier kind of enrichment.

The footage also offers a close look at older lions and the practical health checks that come with moving them. Viety shows improvement but still has weakness in his hindquarters, Icarus needs a change in medication, and Meg’s claws are being watched closely as they grow into her paw pads. The move becomes both a management task and a quiet welfare check, revealing how much can be learned when lions are asked to load, walk, and settle into a new space.

Created for viewers searching for lion sanctuary care, big cat relocation, wildlife rescue, animal enrichment, and behind-the-scenes lion behavior. It also fits searches for sanctuary documentary, lion handling, and educational wildlife videos about moving lions between camps and checking their health in a natural, hands-on setting.

00:00All right good morning everyone today is moving day and that can only mean one
00:12thing a little bit of chaos at the sanctuary so yeah we're gonna be trying
00:17to move the entire sanctuary around but as these lines get older it does get
00:23trickier. All right first up Vajetzi and Jenny! Hello guys Not nice Vajetzi, not nice. Be kind Can you move
00:43your bat hmm please
00:53phew, that's not very kind
01:14Hello big boy
01:25Then be lucky
01:28Yeah
01:33Yeah
01:39Yeah
01:41Yeah
01:41Yeah
01:42Yeah
01:42Yeah
01:48Yeah
01:49Yeah
01:59Go for it a bit
02:12That wasn't very hard
02:14You my boy come
02:16You
02:18Yeah
02:19Right see
02:20Yeah
02:30No
02:32No
02:34Okay come
03:01Nice
03:02Nicely done
03:04Nicely done
03:07Yeah
03:08Yeah
03:09Yeah
03:14Yeah
03:14That went well
03:15Okay George let's stack these two to the end
03:21They are going to be next up for an enrichment war
03:31So we're going to move them to the end and then we're going to have to bring Thor's group down
03:36to this camp here
03:39That's the six and then we're going to have to move Vajetzi and Jenny to that camp where Thor's group
03:47is
03:50Oh
03:50Oh guys
03:51Yeah
03:51So
03:53Yeah
03:53Vajetzi is doing a lot better but
03:56Still a little bit weak on the hindquarters
03:58It's always a good test to make him jump in the loading vehicle because then I can
04:04gauge the strength of his hindquarters so it's a massive improvement on
04:13What we've seen previously but still not where it should be definitely a neurological issue there too
04:27I can't help but wonder if he didn't have a stroke of some sort
04:34It just seemed like that
04:35But anyway we are treating for it as well
04:44Guys I think the question that you all should be asking is which of the lions is not on meds
04:53That would probably be a more appropriate question
04:58But as you all know the females are pretty good so starting with Meg the eldest
05:06Still doing good just got to keep an eye out for those claws
05:09Because those claws creep up on you especially
05:14The older lions the claws just grow into those paw pads
05:18And you don't even notice it so
05:21Even going in with them you got to like literally check it and then just keep an eye out for
05:26it when you see a claw approaching
05:28Now on Meg I've noticed on her right paw her dew claw and her pointy finger
05:36It's getting a little bit too close for my liking so weeks to come we might have to get Doc
05:43out to trim those
05:45Just such a pity I can't do it myself without having to sedate
05:52But they do not like you tampering with their claws and it's completely understandable
05:59It must feel very odd for them
06:03It creeps them out so they don't like it at all
06:06All right
06:08Let's offload by Etsy and Ginny
06:15Cut
06:17Cut
06:17More
06:19More
06:36Wow
06:43Hello
06:45Just when I was going to turn the camera on
06:47You silly bully
06:49You silly bully bully bully bully
06:53Hey hey hey
06:54How are you?
06:57Aaaaaah
07:08Alright so we're meant to be doing a move
07:14and I don't think Icarus is going to come up today so I think unfortunately
07:21Meggie we're gonna have to leave you where you are
07:35Meggie
07:42so we're actually trying a new course of meds with Icarus but yeah it's not it's not having
07:54the desired effect so we're gonna stop it and yeah consulted with with the doctor and we're
08:03going to change back his meds to the regime that was working the best for Ikki so yeah it's just
08:12a
08:12little bit of a trial and error at the moment and we just got to get that right combo unfortunately
08:18Meggie and Ikki are going to have to stay one more time ah he went to my camera one more
08:30time or week
08:31or a few more days they're gonna have to stay in this camp it's not a bad camp you're gonna
08:39roar
08:49I think Ikki's cat down hey Meggie you're very hairy you are
09:05what are you going to do with Ikki oh sorry Meggie you're not going to be able to come
09:13maybe what I'll do is take you on a walk alone
09:19also got to take Karn so yeah lots to lots to do Michael lots to do and take sorry
09:32she wants to go she's rearing to go okay we're gonna have to leave you
09:39we'll see you next time okay
09:43how are we gonna load these six George what we're gonna do is we're gonna
09:48lock them in the small section all of them all of them all six yeah
09:52then we drive in then we release them then we load wherever we load and
09:58once will be remaining we can just lock them back then we'll do a second load with them
10:04that sounds like a good plan I like it all right let's go all right so guys for the
10:13people who are new to the channel I have had the question come up
10:16um as to why we move the lines from camp to camp
10:23those of you been following for a long long time will know exactly why and you will
10:27know the answer so just bear with me quickly and guys it's it's it's for several reasons but
10:34the most important reason is to just give the lines a new habitat for them to explore for them to
10:43go
10:43around and smell different smells and different stimulations and that is important for their enrichment
10:54so as you can well imagine living in one area your entire life is pretty boring I think
11:02most of you will agree with that sentiment so we mix it up here at the sanctuary especially for those
11:10lines
11:10that want to move obviously when a line gets to an age where it doesn't want to move it can't
11:17move it
11:18doesn't uh it's unable to get into the loading vehicle then we select a a camp that is suitable and
11:26that line will go there and what we can even still do then is walk that line uh we cordon
11:34off areas with
11:35fencing and then we walk the line to the um to another camp normally the camp next door just to
11:42give even
11:43that older lion mental uh enrichment uh stimulation etc so that is what the the main main reason for
11:53moving the lines around shuffling them around giving them new neighbors new neighbors to argue with
11:58new neighbors that they like or don't like as the case may be um obviously if they really don't like
12:05their neighbors like echo niobe tend to irritate bongani he's an old male lion we just then won't put
12:15those lines next to bongani um just to to save him the irritation at that age and uh yeah and
12:23then the
12:23other the other reason or what i find when i do these move arounds is is you can very quickly
12:30see which
12:32lions are um struggling with their physical health because i know from previous on from previous occasions
12:43how they load and then you can very quickly see because they cannot mask uh their pain so if they
12:51if they are in pain and they can't load they they they just simply can't get in or they stumble
12:56in
12:56and then you know okay this lion needs uh more intervention um so it is a good way to uh
13:04give
13:04them a thorough health check because what lions are really really good at doing is masking sickness
13:12um i think that it's obviously a primal um it's a primal thing because you think about a lion
13:23behaviorally in the wild if it shows weakness it's not a good thing uh from a perspective of other
13:31predators but even the pride looking at this and thinking okay this lion is a burden they're not like
13:37wild dogs that look after they're sick the young and the lame and the old uh lions are are really
13:42about
13:43the strength and integrity of the pride and are pretty selfish um at the best of times so
13:51they're very good at masking their sicknesses and illnesses and ailments but when you load them
13:57into the vehicle or you uh you know get an opportunity to really give them a thorough
14:03look over then they can't mask it so that's the reasons guys
14:11even if you leave charlie leave him i'll load him first okay so we're going to leave charlie out and
14:20we're going to load him first because thor is the bully and he will just jump straight in
14:27actually the other day it was the first time i think i've loaded charlie and thor together
14:31for forever since they were cubs uh that was quite surprising but anyway um okay the exciting group
14:46is
15:08yeah
15:17So good.
15:22Let's go.
15:24Let's go.
15:51So far so good
15:53now the trick is to let two lines out of here which would be ideal two girls and then we
16:05can
16:08yeah come back for the three left behind
16:15just gotta get that pin out there done okay yeah
16:26yeah
16:33yeah
16:39yeah
16:43yeah
16:52yeah
16:54yeah
17:19yeah yeah yeah yeah
17:22Nish, Nish, Nish, Nish, Nish
17:26Charlie, Nish, Nish
17:50Charlie, Nish, Nish, Nish

18:43Okay
18:44All right, Nish, you can just wait there for a moment, my uncle
18:47Uh-huh
18:55Okay, um
18:58Let's go out
18:59And we'll regroup
19:01Yeah, Nish, yeah
19:03Nish, yeah
19:16Nish, yeah
19:29Okay, much easier group to load the next time around
19:34Okay, let me regroup
19:36Okay, my uncle
19:36Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
19:41Can you just laugh?
19:54And let's go out
