OpenAI asked three of its safety researchers to unlock their personal phones. A week later, all three were fired. π±π
The Wall Street Journal reported (October 23, 2026) on the leak investigation behind the firings. According to the Journal, OpenAI's security team was hunting for the source of a news story that said its newest model, Astra, shows less of its reasoning. Investigators asked the researchers to unlock their phones and found Signal chats with disappearing messages switched on, so there was nothing left to review.
OpenAI says the three violated its policies on handling sensitive information. It says Signal is not an approved tool, but that it was not the only reason for the firings. The researchers, Tomek Korbak, Mikita Balesni and Jasmine Wang, deny leaking anything. They say they were never told in writing what they supposedly leaked, and warn the case could discourage staff from raising safety concerns.
