00:08well there's no question that the lions went out of their way to have the football last that
00:12included a a very aggressive go for it with five minutes to go on a tie game on your own
00:1723 24
00:18whatever yard line it was um i believe it was a 23 and and then at the end of the
00:24game they
00:24were clearly coached not to get in the end zone uh and so that was that was they they one
00:31of the
00:32goals late in that game part of the the decision making was to have the football last whether they
00:38had it last in a tie game which they ended up having or have it last in a in a
00:43with a three-point
00:44deficit uh or seven-point deficit they wanted to have it last i mean the lions they missed go you
00:52can talk all you want about how green bay was there but the lions missed a bunch of opportunities
00:56themselves you get to the end of the first half and they have a chance to score and you know
01:01they
01:01turn the ball over you have the fumble um and then with like 20 seconds left they get the ball
01:07back
01:07to green bay as they're in the red zone that that's brutal to see that fumble happen you get the
01:11ball
01:11to start the second half and you have a bad exchange with the quarterback in the center jared goff took
01:17blame for that one um but that's that's an opportunity we always talk about the daily
01:22double you know when you defer and you're going to get the ball to start the second half you got
01:25the ball at the end of the first half and can score then to get the ball to start the
01:28second half
01:29daily double and they struck out they had that opportunity in front of them and they struck out
01:34with it um they had a fourth down i think was it a fourth down player they threw to jmo
01:38in the back
01:39in the end zone he caught it but was pushed back pushed out or maybe they had to settle for
01:43field
01:43on that drive i forget what the result was there um but those are missed opportunities and those are
01:50things that you look at the film and you're like all right what would we do wrong here how we
01:53execute
01:53better let's let's get better at it i heard tj talking this morning about you know some of the
01:58run blocking um against the packers could have been a lot better uh that maybe they just need to
02:04communicate more or get more accustomed to it and this is kate may's first game back but you know
02:10the packers only got to jared goff on for one quarterback sack and it didn't seem like he was
02:14under pressure a whole lot in that game i thought the offensive line played pretty well two four eight
02:19five three nine 97 97 let's go to nick next on 97 one good morning nick morning guys how y
02:27'all doing
02:27okay yeah i haven't heard uh this week anything about the defense kind of strange because in the last
02:37three four weeks we've been complaining about the defense champ champ and chump are coming up here
02:42i'll just tell you that yeah well yesterday they stepped up in a big way last week they stepped up
02:51in
02:51a big way i don't i don't i'm i mean dan caught that play trusting his defense now you guys
03:02gonna talk
03:02to him y'all can ask them that if he called that play trusting in his defense i'm not sure
03:09if he
03:09called it because he trusts in his defense or not and it's a good question nick did he trust his
03:14defense to turn it into a field goal attempt instead of a touchdown you can make the case you
03:19can also say when he said hey i wasn't sure we were going to get the ball back with five
03:22minutes to go
03:23he didn't want green bay to be able to play the walk-off card that feels to me like maybe
03:27he didn't
03:28trust his defense so i i know what you're saying i'm not sure i'm not sure what's true here
03:34well i just i just uh they those guys was hitting yesterday i don't know if that was um um
03:44because they got the safety back
03:48well i think it helps to get branch back and he's he's kind of the quarterback of that defensive
03:52secondary for sure that helps but the i thought the most important part and most impressive part of
03:57the defense was the secondary they didn't give up any deep shots they were prepared for it we
04:03kept talking about it all week golden and watson these are guys that they go out there and get it
04:07the 50 50 balls jordan loves throwing the arm punts if you will or just throwing it downfield
04:12and they connect on a bunch of those they didn't connect on a single one downfield like that and
04:18they had the interception from uh from branch i thought the secondary was great yep i thought they
04:23were great too and i just i haven't just i just called i just wanted to say that that they
04:29were the callers calling in no one's complaining about the defense this week but nobody's giving
04:34them praise either yeah no and we just started the show nick and and maybe you're going back to the
04:41morning show or whatever um but foreshadowing who my champ of the weekend is yeah the deep if you
04:47told us before the game that that the lions would hold green bay to 17 points i think everyone in
04:53metro detroit would have picked a lions win and also everyone in metro detroit would have said i'll
04:59believe it when i see it now how they got there you can say green bay dropped the touchdown sure
05:04you can say that the lions got some fortunate calls and i would agree but under no circumstance
05:09did we even expect them in spite of that to hold them to 17 points it was it was a
05:16a a step in there look the last two games for the defense steps you can't dismiss that the
05:23results have been different you can say oh arizona sucks or all green bay blue opportunities
05:28yeah well there are teams on the schedule that you know we said okay tap the brakes here a little
05:34bit got it new orleans sliced them up but maybe new orleans is good new orleans is two and five
05:38okay and that was a bad team that moved it against this lions defense and and this morning rex ryan
05:45on espm was asked how much does brian branches return help and he said it can help a lot he
05:51makes
05:52every player around him better so i'll say it i think the defense definitely played better no doubt
05:58but as far as that last possession for the fourth down call i don't think dan campbell fully trusted
06:02his defense to get a stop and that's the reason why he went for it he guaranteed himself and he
06:06said in
06:07the clip we played earlier either they were going to get the first down and keep the ball the lines
06:11were or they were not going to convert and they were still going to get the ball back he just
06:16wanted
06:16to guarantee himself that the offense was going to get the ball no matter what and if you punt that
06:22in his mind he basically said with his actions he wasn't guaranteed they were going to get the ball
06:27back he was worried that the packers would slow bleed that clock and kick set up a game-winning
06:31field goal or even score a touchdown so as well as the defense got improved they're not they didn't have
06:38the full trust of his their head coach yet otherwise he would never have gone for it on fourth and
06:43what one and a half from his own 24 yard line uh time for our champ and chump nominations 248
06:49-539-97-97
06:51my champ of the weekend is kelvin shepherd it wasn't perfect but in the end it was only 17 points
06:56and football is not a game of perfect mistakes are made by both teams uh but shep the last couple
07:02of games
07:03look this was an embattled defensive coordinator and it looks like they have shown a path to being
07:10a a better group than they were at the beginning of the year i give shep credit i'm gonna look
07:15to
07:16the only uh undefeated team in the eastern conference in the national basketball association
07:20and i will say duncan robinson of the detroit pistons is my champ of the week off to a great
07:24start
07:25he's got uh 59 points in the three games just under 20 points a game he scored 21 points twice
07:3017 in the
07:31other he's shooting 50 from three point land in these three games what a great start for duncan
07:36robbins uh my jump on the weekend the michigan offense the staff back harding maybe not the the
07:43wide receivers coaches uh simons and hagans is i don't know that maybe those guys have gotten better
07:48but this whole thing is unrecognizable when it comes to collegiate offenses michigan offenses
07:54uh people don't like the play calling and i understand that uh i'm not sure what plays work
08:00when you can't block up front i have no idea how they they've lost the ability to block given they
08:05had a couple starters out but it it still is and indiana's a good defense but that i mean it's
08:10champ and jump of the weekend and that was a bad weekend for the michigan offense yeah i will go
08:14with the other team from michigan college football and say my jump of the week is uh injuries uh at
08:19michigan state you talk about unrecognizable i don't even know who the hell's playing for this team
08:24they literally had guys out there that had no names on the back of their jerseys
08:27playing in the game this is where they're at right now and then they just lost uh their best
08:31defensive player in ben roberts looks like he could be gone for this season that's not good
08:36along with all the other injuries they had and then going into the game you don't have your
08:40quarterback in uh milivojevic and and then patterson's out and then three plays into the game
08:45you lose your next running back who's your third string running back so now you have to go to your
08:49fourth and fifth string running backs in this game it's absolutely incredible they lost offensive lineman
08:54in the game i don't know how michigan state's gonna be able to keep things going at all i mean
08:59there's and when i say keep things going i mean trying to be competitive in games let alone try to
09:04win a game uh fortunately they had the bye week which maybe comes at the best time that they could
09:08prior to the michigan game in a couple of weeks but michigan state's injuries are unbelievable
09:13get your champion jump votes in 248-539-9797 let's go to demetrius in flint hello demetrius
09:22hey guys uh thanks for taking the call so so if i understand this right if you declare a tackle
09:27eligible i get to end his career is that what i understood well that carl's world yeah carl nobody
09:33went to carl's birthday party or something i don't know but so so all right as far as the fourth
09:38down
09:39thing i think that first of all i was more unhappy with an earlier one in the red zone that
09:43could put
09:44them up six but set that aside when they didn't kick the field goal where they that was a yeah
09:49in the
09:49third quarter they're up 17 14 they have fourth and five for the green base seven and he goes for
09:53it and jamo catches the pass in the back of the end zone out of that one i did not
09:57like exactly i
09:58didn't like that one the other one it wasn't so much the decision and i think the best player maybe
10:05or at least the best decision maker on the field yesterday is 16 i hated the play call a slow
10:11developing running play put the ball in 16's hands because he just consistently makes great
10:17decisions he had a couple of bad throws yesterday but i hated the call more than it i wouldn't have
10:23done it but if you're going to do it let your best player get it or not get it and
10:28we can debate
10:28jamir i think the play call didn't put jamir in a good spot because it was too slow developing i
10:33would have let jared golf call whatever he wanted nothing against drew but um golf has for five games
10:40now six games now been making really good decisions there's something to be said demetrius for
10:46just let golf break the huddle walk to the line of scrimmage look at the defense and call the play
10:52exactly that's where i am with jared golf right now maybe you don't even need to huddle just what
10:56yeah i mean there's something to be said for the way golf is playing now yesterday he probably could
11:01add his first two picks of the season he typically doesn't put the ball in harm's way but yeah he
11:07is
11:08playing at a level right now that is getting him mvp that was another conversation this morning on first
11:13take was about how jared golf is playing at an mvp level totally agree uh but yeah somebody's got
11:20to go to carl's birthday party next year please oh look carl we have a disagreement with carl
11:24i thought it you know it's a partial disagreement really is what it is welcome carl's motivation
11:30for not sending penny sewell out is that a defense is going to go after his knees and and his
11:36season
11:36and i'm like if a defense is that motivated to take a player out and end their season he doesn't
11:41need
11:41to go out in a pass pattern no you don't wait for that if that's the way your your motivator
11:48the
11:49way you want to coach and that's fine if i mean it's dirty as hell but are you why would
11:56you wait
11:56for him to go out in a pass pattern but that was i look i just thought i think demetrius
12:03put it
12:03perfectly if your tackle's eligible he's now eligible to get a season ended by a dirty a cheap shot
12:10248-539-9797 we'll get to more phone calls and feedback coming up it is karshen anderson
12:16champion chump by the way brought to you by sarah chevrolet sterling heights 97.1
