00:00Doug Hart, Scott Anderson, 97.1, open lines 248-539-9797, our Champ and Champ nominations
00:06coming up at 10.35.
00:07Let's go to Gary, you're next on 97.1.
00:10Good morning, Gary.
00:11Good morning.
00:12Hey.
00:14I just got a thing, you know, we're such a greedy people.
00:18The first thing I heard when I heard that home run go out yesterday, I thought, wouldn't
00:22it be great if somebody just threw it back on the field before he reached home plate?
00:27You're talking about the Kevin McGonigal first career home run.
00:31Yeah, exactly.
00:32You know, I mean, if you dropped your wallet or your phone and somebody held you up for
00:36ransom for it, or would they give it back to you, just wouldn't you appreciate it so much
00:41more?
00:42And then if they had offered you, you know, something for throwing the ball back, fine.
00:47But, you know, he's just a kid and why we all have to be so greedy.
00:52I don't think that person was all that greedy.
00:54I think it's apples and oranges, which are bringing up, too.
00:56I mean, all he did was, you got a signed jersey, signed baseball, and a signed bat.
01:01It's not like he held them out for like $50,000.
01:04No, that's true.
01:06You know, I'm just saying, it would have been, I can remember watching the game, I think it
01:09was in New York or Boston years ago, when the opposing guy hit a home run and they just
01:15threw the ball back on the field, you know.
01:18That happens all the time.
01:19Yeah.
01:20Yeah.
01:20That happens a lot.
01:21I just thought, I thought it would have been a cool gesture, but I mean, it would have
01:26been, I don't think there's anything wrong with what happened.
01:28I'm not even sure how it went down.
01:30Did, did the Tigers come up with the payout?
01:32Did the guy ask for that?
01:33I don't know.
01:35Yeah.
01:36And I don't, you know, having, this is, this to me is a topic that gets way too much scrutiny
01:42over something that's not really all that important.
01:46But if people want to talk about it, I guess we will, if you pay a ticket to go to
01:50a game
01:51and you catch a historic home run ball of some sort, you can, you can do whatever you
01:56want.
01:57I, I, who am I to tell a fan what they can and can't do?
02:00Um, your, your thought that it would be a cool gesture just to throw it back.
02:04I don't disagree with that.
02:05I think that would be a cool gesture, but Kang, you're a collectible guy.
02:09I mean, there's no way Kang would have thrown it back.
02:11No, here's a, my answer to this is always the same guys.
02:14There's no wrong answer.
02:15It's what you want out of it.
02:17You know what I mean?
02:17And every, as a fan, yeah, whoever caught the ball, it's what you want out of it.
02:21So there's no wrong answer.
02:22Now, if you just want that player to get his ball back, hand it over to him, right?
02:27If you want financial gain, you might want to hold onto that ball.
02:31So whatever you feel like you want out of this experience, that's the right answer.
02:35Now you could ask the question, well, what would be the highest financial gain?
02:38I would hold onto it if you think that player is going to be really good.
02:42The person who gave back Shoei Otani's first home run as an angel or a Dodger, they messed
02:47up financially big time.
02:48Okay.
02:49That's just the financial part, but maybe they're happy with the fact that they got to meet him
02:53and got a signed hat or whatever it is.
02:55Right.
02:55Everyone's different in this.
02:58If McGonagall goes on to have like a hall of fame type career, MVPs, that ball could be
03:03worth 50K at some point.
03:05Right now it's not worth 50K.
03:07But you know what I mean?
03:07So if you think it's a long-term investment, you hold onto the ball.
03:10If you want to give it back and still try to get some long-term investment, maybe ask for
03:13a signed bat that he used to get that first home run, that jersey that he was wearing
03:17that he hit the home run with.
03:19Things like that, you know?
03:20But yeah, like I said, it's up to you and then what you want out of it.
03:23I don't begrudge anybody in that situation for whatever they decide to do unless they're,
03:30I don't know.
03:30I mean, I guess you could do something.
03:31I will say this, and this is not like Tiger specific or anything.
03:34A lot of major league teams and professional teams, they will come at you and kind of
03:38really devalue the item that you have.
03:41Don't get strong-armed.
03:42Don't feel pressured.
03:43And it's in your possession.
03:44It's yours.
03:45You don't feel comfortable.
03:46You can just walk away with that ball or whatever it is.
03:48Well, they'll tell you.
03:49I've heard stories.
03:51I don't know if it was at Comerica Park or not, but they'll tell you that if you don't
03:53give up the ball, they won't authenticate it.
03:56They won't authenticate it.
03:56Well, take a bunch of pickers when you get it.
03:58You can get it third-party authenticated.
04:00Can you?
04:01Yes.
04:01Okay.
04:03So, I mean, you know, good for him.
04:05Good for the fan.
04:06Good for McGonagall.
04:07It seemed like it all worked out.
04:08McGonagall didn't seem like it was any worse for wear afterwards.
04:11He was actually kind of smiling about it.
04:12He was like, hey, just all he wanted was a signed ball and bat and a jersey.
04:17Great.
04:17You know, what's that total value?
04:19A few hundred dollars?
04:20No, more than that, for sure.
04:22Well, I guess the jersey's like, you know, three.
04:23I mean, I'm just talking straight back.
04:24That's just off the rack.
04:26Yeah.
04:26I'm just saying straight value.
04:27So he gets three in for the jersey, what, a hundred bucks for the bat, 150 bucks for
04:32the bat, whatever they are, you'd know better than I would.
04:34They buy them in bulk.
04:35They got a good deal.
04:36And a ball is, you know, nothing.
04:37But the signature's on it.
04:38Obviously, jack it up.
04:40And the reason is there.
04:41But it's not like he was asking an arm and a leg for this.
04:45We weren't there for the negotiations either.
04:48No.
04:48Whatever was negotiated, that was the end result.
04:50And I think it's fine.
04:51Here's the only downside to this.
04:54I'm only really, if somebody's hypercritical of the people involved, who are you to tell
05:00them what they can and can't do?
05:01That's why I always say there's no wrong answer.
05:03It's what you want from that experience.
05:04Now, if you walk away with just the ball or whatever it is, and you don't want to give
05:07it back, guess what?
05:08You're still better off than when you got there, right?
05:12You came there with nothing.
05:13And even if you don't get any financial gain or any cool memorabilia, you still have that.
05:18So, I just, you know, whatever you want out of the experience is what I always say.
05:22But financially, you probably should keep it.
05:25If that's your motivation.
05:26If that's your motivation.
05:27Champ and Chump.
05:28Let's get to our Champ and Chump nominations.
05:30Champ and Chump brought to you by Sarah Chevrolet, Sterling Heights.
05:32Gator, I will start my Champ at a Weekend is Riley Green.
05:35He's taken a share of arrows at the start of this season, but five of ten, four RBIs, two
05:40walks, Homer double, Riley Green, my Champ at a Weekend, five of ten.
05:46My Champ with the Tiger starters, over the weekend, what a job they did.
05:50They threw 18 and a third innings, gave up only ten hits, only two runs, four walks, and
05:5619 strikeouts between the three of them.
05:58That's Casey Mize, Tarek Skubel, and Kater Montero.
06:01They were fantastic.
06:02My Champ at a Weekend, as much as I've said it over and over, it pains me to say it,
06:06but
06:06Steve Eisenman, and it goes back to what I've said.
06:09Where's the proof of concept?
06:10Where is anything that we can point to that shows this is headed in the right direction?
06:16It's another March collapse.
06:19It's happened too many times for it to be a coincidence, and God darn it, I can't stand
06:25this, because Stevie was such a great Detroit Red Wing, and his proof of concept is Tampa.
06:31There's like nothing here that you can say, well, there's this, that, or whatever to build
06:35on, I mean, there's some good draft picks and some decent young players, but to continue
06:40to come up short, it's a very, very bitter pill to swallow for me.
06:44Yeah, it's really bitter.
06:45I'm with you on that.
06:46I echo everything you've said.
06:48Coming up with a different one, I have Sergio Garcia in the Masters over the weekend.
06:52He lost his mind yesterday on the second tee, hits a drive right down the middle of the
06:58fairway, but he knows he's hit it too well, and it ends up rolling into a sand trap.
07:03He's upset, he ends up snapping his club, beating it against a cooler on the second tee, he can't
07:10use it, and then he was given a code of conduct warning after like the fourth hole, because
07:15he damaged the tee area, and afterwards is unapologetic for it, and was very short with
07:22his answers to the media, and was kind of a jerk, and then just pushed on, and it just
07:26comes in, next question, and he was done.
07:29So that's just, that's weak sauce, maybe that's what Liv does to people.
07:33248-539-9797.
07:36Oh, shots at Liv.
07:37I'm here for it.
07:38Let's get back to your open line calls.
07:39We go to David in Brighton.
07:40You're next on 97.1.
07:42Hello, David.
07:43Hey, buddy.
07:44I would definitely, I'd keep it.
07:47Keep the baseball.
07:48I'd keep the chances, and I'd keep it.
07:51Okay.
07:54I think it would be worth thousands of dollars down the road, and if it's not, oh, well,
07:59I tried, then I'd keep it for myself.
08:02Yeah, I mean, whatever you want to do, you could, anybody, people can do whatever they
08:06want.
08:07You know, paying customer, ball lands in your lap, or you make a great catch, one-hander,
08:12bounces, whatever.
08:12However you end up with that baseball, you know, you can do whatever you want.
08:16You can, you can, some people will over-ask, some people will under-ask, but it's up to
08:21the individual, whatever makes them happy.
08:24Now, I keep it.
08:26Okay, David, thank you for sharing.
08:28Is this a huge debate point?
08:30Yeah, apparently, David would keep it.
08:31Is this a, like.
08:33I think, I think there's an older crowd would say, just give it up.
08:36It's not yours.
08:36And yet, yeah, it is.
08:39I'm in the stands, and the ball was hit to me.
08:40It's mine.
08:41Yeah.
08:41You know, they allow you to keep the baseballs when they're hitting to the crowd.
08:44Exactly.
08:45They'll toss them into the crowd.
08:46The only issue I have with, like, the people that say that you have to give it back to
08:48the player, it belongs to the player.
08:49It actually does not.
08:51Now, if you want to give it back to the player, go ahead.
08:53Yeah, there's really wrong with giving it straight up and saying, hey, here you go.
08:55But, I mean, don't, I don't like people judging other people for them.
08:59I'm with you on this, King.
09:00There's no, there's no right answer, or there's no wrong answer.
09:03Everything's right.
09:04Whatever you want to do.
09:04If, like, the previous caller wanted to hold out, and, you know, I'm hanging out of that,
09:08then he's got his price, I'm sure, if they came up to him.
09:10But his price is money.
09:11It's not merchandise.
09:13Somebody says, I'll give you $5,000 for the ball right now.
09:16Would he give it up?
09:17I don't know.
09:18He might, yeah.
09:19But he might.
09:20So, remember when Albert Pujols, he hit a significant home run ball.
09:23I think it was at America Park.
09:24But they knew what was going to happen.
09:26So, all the balls that were being pitched to Pujols were already, like, special marked baseballs.
09:31And they asked Pujols, what would you pay to get that ball back?
09:34And he said nothing.
09:35Yeah.
09:35He goes, the fan can give it back to me or not, but I'm not paying a dime for it.
09:39And I actually respect that kind of approach.
09:41He's like, yeah, man, I'm not going to go out there and try to, you know, buy my own stuff.
09:45Or I'm not trying to, you know, the accomplishments stand no matter what, people.
09:49That is Kevin McGonigal's first home run no matter what.
09:51That's going down as he hit his home run, you know, this past weekend in a Tigers uniform.
09:56You don't take away the stats or the fame or the money from the player by keeping the ball.
10:00Which is worth more?
10:01First home run or 500th home run?
10:03500.
10:04Well, actually, I said that pretty quickly.
10:08I like having a collecting guy on the show because I have no concept for this.
10:13Because I'm trying to think, like, for me personally, like, if it were me who had the accomplishment,
10:17if I've got this massive power and I hit my first home run and I know I'm going to end
10:22up hitting a bunch of them, right?
10:24I think the first one means more.
10:26Yeah.
10:26It might.
10:26That's why I took it back real quick because it obviously.
10:29I don't know if it's worth more, but I think it means more.
10:31That's why that stuff, like, if you want to hold it, if that guy eventually hits 500 home runs, wow,
10:36that first ball is worth a lot now, right?
10:38Yeah.
10:392, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97.
10:41More your open line calls.
10:42More your champion.
10:43A bunch of texts we got to get caught up on.
10:45It is a Monday on Carson Anderson on 97.1.
