00:00He joins Andy on the Browns Network pregame show, joins me on the postgame show,
00:04and he joins all of you in your hearts as Browns fans.
00:08Oh, is that deep?
00:09He's Mr. Tyvus Powell. Hello, Tyvus.
00:12Gentlemen, how are you guys doing today?
00:15Hi, Tyvus.
00:16It's been fun. We've had some very optimistic people join our show today as callers.
00:22I like that. Isn't it great opposed to what we had to deal with for the past two years?
00:28It's been nice to be on the good spirits, having to figure out if a quarterback,
00:33if you're going to re-sign him after the end of the year.
00:37It's unbelievable. I love it.
00:39Well, are you?
00:42Let's start there.
00:44Are you going to re-sign Deshaun?
00:45If Deshaun Watson goes out there this week and goes to Pittsburgh and wins in Pittsburgh,
00:51I think they need to start the negotiation.
00:53I don't know if it's a multi-year deal.
00:56It might just be a one-year thing and make you prove it again.
00:59But it is fun to have to have that conversation.
01:03What if you're somebody in the locker, right?
01:08And you're looking at this contract for Deshaun.
01:11This is typical.
01:12Not typical.
01:13This is completely hypothetical, right?
01:15Say you're 10-7.
01:18And they come to you and they're like,
01:20Tyvus, we're going to go in a different direction.
01:22Tyvus?
01:23We need you to kind of get the feel of the team on this one.
01:28What do you think?
01:30If they said that if the Browns are 10-7 and they decide to go in a different direction with
01:36Deshaun?
01:36Yeah, at the end of the regular season.
01:38What if they're 10-7 and they decide to go in a different direction?
01:40Are you asking me as if I was Deshaun or if I'm another player?
01:43No, you're another player.
01:44You're a leader in that locker room.
01:46Leader.
01:47Leader.
01:49I mean, I would understand it from a management standpoint.
01:52I would understand.
01:53Do you think players would understand it from a management standpoint?
01:57Yeah, I think you got to.
01:59I mean, everybody understand the contract and it's the end of the deal and all those things.
02:03And I understand what comes with it.
02:05I think that you would also have to tell me what's coming after.
02:09Okay, so you're getting rid of him.
02:10What else are you going to be doing?
02:12Like, what's the move?
02:13Are we rolling with Shador and this is just him, you know, sitting and learning and he's
02:19showing us things in practice that we're confident that he can be the guy?
02:23All right, then I can understand that for sure.
02:26Let's go with that.
02:27But if Shador isn't doing well in practice and billing and tailing and you ain't got a
02:33plan, then I don't know what we're doing.
02:36I don't know what we're doing and I'm a question what's going on.
02:39So, skill, position, talent was on display yesterday and in some previous games.
02:46And, you know, I'm waiting for the day when Casey Concepcion and Denzel Boston each get
02:51100 yards.
02:52But yesterday was the day that I think Casey kind of needed.
02:55Tyvis, what impressed you about his work?
02:57Well, it was all of his receptions in the first half.
02:59Eight for over 120 yards.
03:02Yeah, Casey, he was the guy that I was very high on for the season.
03:07He actually played to what I thought he was going to be.
03:10And I think that just the guy that's going across the middle and shows you that speed
03:14and the toughness after the catch.
03:16I mean, he's kind of like, you remember how Jarvis Landry was very strong after the catch?
03:21Like, he's like that.
03:22But then he's also got the speed.
03:24Like, Jarvis wasn't the fastest guy.
03:26But this guy shows you the speed.
03:28You know, and I just love the fact that he's fearless like that and you need that.
03:32Because when you see a guy making plays like that, it kind of turns everybody else up.
03:36You know, now you got Harold getting involved.
03:38You got Denzel wanting to get involved.
03:40Jerry, all those guys see how Casey is being so physical and so tough and taking the fight
03:45that it inspires other guys.
03:46So, I think he was a big uplifting part of that offense.
03:50It was something that we've seen glimpses of him, but we've never seen him put together
03:53like he did yesterday.
03:55And I think that that led to the success of all the other things.
03:59You know, we wanted the run game to come to life.
04:02Well, if we got a guy that's in the slot that's making a ton of plays like that, maybe those
04:06linebackers loosen up a little bit.
04:08And now he creates scenes for Quinshawn and Dylan Sampson and company to get through.
04:13So, I just, I love the fact that he sparked it with that physical, with that toughness
04:17and the physicality.
04:18And I think that's something, that's a recipe that the Browns need to keep if they want to
04:23get to the playoffs and have some success.
04:24Something special yesterday, Tyvus, it was the first time that we have seen Quinshawn,
04:31Dylan Sampson, KC, Denzel, and Harold Fannin on the football field together.
04:37You know, because Dylan hadn't been in there yet this year.
04:40You had all five of those young guys out there.
04:43And man, they, it looked different, I thought.
04:47And it's like, boy, there's a weapon.
04:48There's another, there's another weapon.
04:50And it just kept coming.
04:52And I loved it.
04:52I, I, that could be big.
04:55It goes on to, you know, everybody.
04:57We've been applauding AB for his, his past couple of drafts.
05:01And you see why all those guys that he drafted is really flashing.
05:05And I mean, almost every single one of them, obviously, you know, the quarterback position,
05:09Dylan and Shador has, don't get the opportunities because of the Deshaun Watson factor, but everybody
05:15else is flashing and making plays and showing up in a major way.
05:19So they have an eye for talent.
05:22You know, I think that we judged him.
05:24And it's funny because before these two drafts, we, we was killing AB about this.
05:28Like he keep missing on these picks.
05:30And we kept forgetting the fact that, you know, the Deshaun Watson deal, Trey ended up
05:36giving away all those first round picks.
05:38And now that you see those first round picks back and you see them making those selections,
05:42it shows that they do have an eye for talent and they do understand like what players can
05:47come in and fit the system and make an impact.
05:51So I think if we do it, do any deals moving forward, we should not trade our first round picks.
05:58I'm just going to throw that out there.
05:59I don't care who the player is.
06:00I don't care if it's Tom Brady, do not trade your first round pick because we can't really
06:07get, we can't, uh, get, get a nice return for that in the, in exchange.
06:14I want to talk about the defense last two weeks, especially they've given up drives early and
06:19they're like, what's going on.
06:21And then I'll even give them the second touchdown yesterday because it was a short field, but
06:27why is it taking them a little bit of time to get going in these games?
06:30They're playing great overall.
06:32They're helping you win these games, but it just seems like they're slow starting, especially
06:37the last two weeks.
06:39Yeah.
06:39We was listening to Dale Pitt talk about that and he was like, he don't have an answer.
06:43You know, he just, we just started slow.
06:45Um, I think that maybe they'll, I was talking to Jeff about this.
06:49I think maybe they're a little bit too aggressive, um, to start.
06:52Cause you know, when you look at our defense, it's an aggressive defense, you know, they
06:54do a lot of twists, a lot of stunts, a lot of blitzes, things like that.
06:58Maybe they're a little bit too aggressive to start off and the things that they're doing,
07:02maybe it's on tape and guys are doing a great job scripting it, you know?
07:06And I think if you're doing all these twists and stunts and stuff like that, maybe that you're
07:10getting caught by an offensive coordinator and that's what's able to, you know, create scenes
07:15for running backs or maybe misfit things like that.
07:18So maybe they need to be more passive to start the game, try to kind of see what's going
07:22on, kind of see what the game plan is from, uh, what the OC is trying to accomplish, just
07:27try to keep everything in front of you and make it, make the tackles and things like
07:31that.
07:31But I think if you become out too aggressive, you know, maybe you get caught in those
07:35circumstances.
07:35I haven't watched the tape, but maybe that's what it is.
07:38It is a weird stat.
07:39I mean, the bronze have given up 45 points in the first quarter through week seven.
07:44That's last in the NFL and they've given up a league high 31 points on opponents, opening
07:50drives for field goals and one, uh, four touchdowns and one field goal.
07:54So it's just a weird stat for a defense that we all look at and go, yeah, we have a
07:59good
07:59defense, but it's just like, it's like they're tripping out of the starting blocks.
08:04Yeah, it's definitely something that they, I'm sure they've having the conversations
08:07in that building and they, hopefully they get it figured out because you know, you never
08:11know as the competition gets better.
08:13And as we get later into the season, maybe it's too hard to make up, you know, those points
08:17and give up those touchdowns and stuff like that.
08:19So if they truly want to be the best defense in the NFL, that's an area that needs to be
08:23fixed.
08:24Tyvus Powell, joining us from the Browns radio network, the Steelers are also five and two.
08:30We have first place on the line coming up next Sunday.
08:32We're going to have fun working that one, but what team do you like better?
08:38What do you mean?
08:39Is that a rhetorical question?
08:41No, I know in your heart, which one you like better.
08:43Which one do you like from a Tyvus Powell played in the NFL and is a great analyst perspective?
08:49Oh, from an analyst's perspective, which one do I like?
08:52I like the youngness of the Browns.
08:55Um, I like the, the fact that all those weapons that came out in yesterday's game,
09:02shine like that, because when it played like that, they're one of the, they're one of the
09:06top teams in my perspective.
09:08When you see all those guys put it together like that.
09:10Um, when you got, when you talk about the Steelers, I think the Steelers defense has been
09:15really good.
09:17Um, obviously TJ Watt and them knew, know how to change, take over games and change games
09:21and things like that.
09:22But I think Jalen Warren is one of the most underrated running backs in the NFL.
09:26I think he is very good, especially when he gets around 20 carries, he always makes something
09:31happen.
09:32I think that our, when, before this Sunday, our sec, our safeties will be tested a lot
09:37because for some odd reason, uh, Aaron Rogers liked to throw the Pat Fryer moves and Darnell
09:43Washington as mismatches.
09:45So our safeties will be tested in that, in that area.
09:48Um, and I think DK is starting to figure it out.
09:51You can, you, he's starting to make those plays again and stuff like that.
09:54So, um, I like our team better because of, I'm more confident when our offense and defense
10:01if they play like they played this past Sunday, but I do, let's see Pittsburgh, obviously figuring
10:07things out and every week they seem like they getting better and they just find ways to
10:11win.
10:11That's just like they think.
10:12And it's, we find ways to win.
10:14So something's got to give this Sunday.
10:17Something's got to give tomorrow.
10:18It's decision day, uh, for Dylan Gabriel.
10:21What do you think is going to happen?
10:22His 21 day practice window, uh, from coming off the injured reserve tomorrow is the day.
10:27If he's healthy, they can't put him back on the injured reserve.
10:30What do you think they're going to do?
10:33Uh, when this first came on, I always thought that the, the simple thing would be to release
10:38Taylor Green, bring him back on practice squad and have a three quarterbacks be Shador,
10:42Dylan and, and Deshaun.
10:44Um, I still think that would be the easiest thing to do.
10:49If you want to try to keep all four, I don't think you want to walk into a season with
10:53four
10:53quarterbacks on your roster because you're never going to use four quarterbacks.
10:58So it just don't seem like the thing to do.
11:00Um, I think I, I personally think, and I don't know nothing.
11:05I just, I think that they're going to break, put Taylor in on practice squad.
11:09I just feel like that would work.
11:11Okay.
11:12If they, if they can get them there, which, you know, you would, you would think they
11:15could, you would think they, I would say, yeah, six round pick, six round pick doesn't
11:22have a lot of film.
11:23Um, and no, and the one preseason game we play, he ran the ball more than he threw the
11:29ball.
11:30Um, never, never operated as a, doesn't, don't know what it's like to prepare for a start
11:36as a starter in the league.
11:38Hasn't, doesn't have any regular season reps.
11:41So I just feel like you will be kind of taking a flyer on a guy if you're, if you're
11:46another
11:46team that decides to sign claim him off waivers, because he hasn't really given you an opportunity
11:52to show you what he's gotten better at.
11:54You know, you're going off of literally college tape in a second half, a quarter or second
12:00half of a preseason game where, where they play the Patriots.
12:05I don't even think they played anybody.
12:06So like, it's so hard to be able to look at that and be like, yeah, that's the guy to
12:10where should do or or Dylan, they actually have reps where they were in a regular season
12:16game.
12:16They prepared as a starter.
12:17They played as a starter, has some success as a starter.
12:20You know what I'm saying?
12:21So like, logically that just doesn't make sense to cut those two.
12:27It just makes sense to cut Taylor.
12:29Cause I feel like you got the best chance of bringing them back unless you don't want
12:32one of these guys back.
12:33Then that's, that's, then that's another story.
12:36That's another story.
12:38All right.
12:38Let me ask you one other quarterback question.
12:40Cause this is a, this is a big one.
12:42USC Saturday.
12:43Are you ready for Luke Fahey?
12:46Yeah.
12:47It should be Ohio state.
12:49Yeah.
12:49Yeah.
12:50I think people see Luke Fahey go in the Indiana game, watch him hit this, hit his own teammate
12:55in the back of the helmet and kind of wrote him off.
12:57I think he's a better than that.
12:58You know, you, people say that he has moxie, you know, he has command of a huddle and things
13:02like that.
13:03So if that is the case and with, with the game, with the coaching staff that Ohio state
13:08has with the, with Arthur Smith and Ryan day, they should have him ready to play.
13:13I think he will be fine.
13:15USC's defense is not good.
13:17I think they rank like 13th in the big 10 out of 18.
13:20So that's terrible.
13:22Wisconsin went up there and put up with 24 points on them.
13:24So I feel very confident that for, for quarterback's first start, he's going up against the right
13:30defense to have some success.
13:31All right.
13:32See you Sunday, sir.
13:34See y'all Sunday.
13:36Go Browns, go Bucks, go Cavs and still go guards.
13:40No matter what, you know, season's going to be a long one.
13:43Thanks buddy.
13:45The time is found Brown's radio network.
