00:19well we're glad to have you and i i wanted to start we talk a lot about guys let me

00:25hey greg let me start with just you know what just to prove that i listen right to the show
00:30yeah and i and i love your show so courtney congratulations on the new one thank you ray
00:35new little addition and uh shine congratulations on getting married thank you and and and uh
00:44he is happy wife happy life it's worked for 44 years for me so yeah that's uh hey and and

00:51i'll be listening i could listen in florida now because you're on uh serious radio so i'm all

01:03till uh late october okay well i i david poster knock mentioned this the other day when it comes to
01:10uh shortened training camp because of the additional two regular season games um and we talk about it
01:16with the patriots and guys getting reps in training camp not getting reps in in in preseason games
01:21do you think that's going to affect these guys when it when it comes to starting a little bit slower
01:26shorter training camp i think so um you know you show up to camp and um usually you know camp
01:36first
01:36day you're you're getting tested and they don't even get tested anymore and then they have i think 12
01:4213 days of camp uh you for me i was in the best shape um that i when the first
01:50day i showed up in
01:50camp was the best shape i was pretty much all year but it wasn't hockey shape then i needed another
01:57you know another four weeks or so or five weeks back then um you know skating training camp the
02:05physicality that is another level of conditioning that i think there is going to be lacking a little
02:11bit with uh these players um and i think if you if they're really honest i think you know they
02:18they tell you that they you know this is this might be a little short uh they would they would
02:24like a little more time and probably you know a veteran playing you know maybe three games or so but
02:29having more practice time and more grinding time and um just allowing them to get at that hockey shape
02:36that is another level uh to get to right we've been talking about this for a while now the the
02:43obviously
02:43the captain situation and you know whether it's going to be pasta or mcavoy you've been in dressing
02:50rooms you understand the way it works when somebody wears that c on their jersey is i believe that there's
02:57been a part there possibly could be a divide that's created because they they've taken so long to name
03:04one of these guys captains is that something that could be a possibility
03:10no i don't think so i think that uh donnie and cam know exactly what they have in that room
03:16and yeah obviously you know it's it's pasta or mcavoy that is talked about in terms of being the next
03:24captain uh donnie said there there's going to be a captain named um yeah or some people maybe it's
03:31going to be one of those two guys they know way better what they have in terms of leadership in
03:36that
03:36room um and and every other player uh as well and i think they're ready uh to name one because
03:44maybe
03:44previously last couple of years maybe they didn't think that person was ready um when i was asked to
03:51be captain uh i was like 25 years old um terry o'reilly had retired and then i wasn't expecting to
04:00be
04:00asked and i really didn't think i was ready for that next step of leadership um and i think
04:06i thought rick middleton was the next guy in line so i really hesitated for a little bit and they
04:12came back to me saying that how about if you and rick kind of share the captaincy for a while
04:18and that allowed me to really to to fall into that comfort uh in terms of that next step of
04:24leadership
04:26um and uh because you know in terms of preparation uh practicing uh working out uh conducting myself
04:36and all that kind of stuff i had no problem in terms of uh leading uh by example but that
04:43next step
04:44when you know when things are going great captaincy is an easy job when things aren't going so well
04:49it's a very it's a it's a tough challenge and the captaincy is not done by just one guy you
04:55have
04:56your core guys that you kind of leaned on when uh when you're captain and you kind of discuss stuff
05:01and how to approach the team so um i'm sure that uh they feel that they have somebody that's ready
05:07to go towards the sea and we'll soon find out ray well marco stern brought you up the other day
05:13saying that the leaders they have now aren't the same type of leaders that you were or bergeron or
05:18chara do you think that the bruins need to stop looking for that old style type of leader
05:25you're calling ray oh no marco no i'm i thought marco was talking about the great meal he had
05:30at etrusca the other night no i am not calling ray old they brought up bergeron he brought up chara
05:41and he said that because we've had such great leaders in the past people want that style of
05:46captaincy again right now we don't have that is it okay that they don't have that anymore that it
05:51is a new type of leader in that in that dressing room not very many people have that kind of
05:57leadership when they come around you were very lucky um and it started with z and then you had
06:04bergy and um but when you're around guys like that you have a chance uh for your young guys and
06:12the
06:12young guys have no choice just to follow that kind of leadership and you hope that the young guys kind
06:17of the next guy is going to discover and become one of those guys but you're talking very very
06:22special guys um when you're talking about z and and bergy and and i would even put you know marshy
06:29marshy was a uh a good leader and uh but that core was just missing um more of those type
06:38of guys
06:38you know when you're talking about the bruins when they had that run um the stanley cup runs and up
06:45and
06:45through you know uh the early 20s there and then getting to the finals or having a run every year
06:51uh you look at that those teams and yeah you had z you had bergy but you had z bergy
06:58zidenberg you had
06:59you had a handful of guys that you kind of look at and you say man they're surrounded by leaders
07:05so
07:05when you're when your best players are your best people and um it's such a gift because the young
07:13guys watch this listen to that and followed that so um yeah but yeah things keep changing you know
07:21and and you know they got they got some great leaders on this team they got some great players
07:27great leaders and you know um they just they just felt that maybe they needed a little more
07:34uh experience or they weren't they weren't there yet so uh but they are now because they're going to
07:41be naming a captain pretty soon here right if you could speak to whoever the new captain will be
07:46what would you say are the most important qualities that you learned you needed to possess to be the
07:51captain of the boston bruins don't be asking people or you know your your teammates or your team to do
08:00what you're not willing to do and really lead by example in all all all areas um you know how
08:08you
08:08practice how you prepare how you work out how you treat your teammates how you treat the fans how you
08:14treat the press um be a stand-up guy and um and and you know just just i'm asking you
08:26to do
08:27to follow my lead because i think i'm doing things pretty well here so and and for me i i
08:34was always uh
08:35it was always constructive criticism and it was never just about you or him it was about us
08:44and uh when you play a team sport it's about us and we're all in the same boat and we
08:49got to be
08:49pulling the rope in the same direction ray this this team as you brought up bergeron has lacked the
08:55number one center since since he left is there a guy whether it's frazier minton or
09:00uh higgins is is there a guy on this team that you think can become that
09:07um yeah i think you know uh special had a had a good year last year uh lynn home you
09:17know it's
09:17gonna be a mix of those guys and um you know uh for turca that they got uh and and
09:25uh that trade
09:26uh he's a dynamic player and uh they need more of that he's going to be uh he's really going
09:32to
09:33complement a line you saw them play a little bit together uh last exhibition game looked really
09:38good um so i mean it's gonna be i think the top two lines will be uh pretty uh pretty
09:45strong and
09:45pretty steady i think they got a good top six there uh with the addition of turca and you know
09:52geeky
09:53just keeps rolling keeps getting better every every year um you know and um middlestad had a
10:01his second half of the season last year was uh amazing um you know geeky 40 goals almost last year
10:08so
10:09um i think they're going to be okay i mean is it uh a number one center that they've gotten
10:16yet uh
10:17the kind of to ride you know shotgun with uh pasta no but um i think uh you know a
10:25good steady good
10:26good solid center and with a couple of great wingers i think will be very effective and pasta i mean
10:32he's
10:33he's probably he's probably the best winger in the league and he's in his prime right now so
10:38um he's not slowing down right when you look at a guy like posture since you bring his name up

10:44you know you obviously played against a number of great players what makes like if you were
10:50defending him what what are the things that makes him so difficult to defend or play against
10:59he's just so talented he's got he's got everything he's got speed he's got deception he's got an
11:05amazing shot um he plays hard uh you know for he plays physical with the puck uh he's tough to
11:15bump
11:16off the puck he'll go to the net uh he's a great playmaker we saw that last year you know
11:22i mean a
11:22lot of people were saying we want him to shoot more score more goals he was cutting up so many
11:28people
11:28for uh for great goals and um and you know what i if you play against pasta you don't want
11:36to be 65
11:37years old like i was when i played against them at z's last skate in slovakia okay
11:45well listen give me let me play against him in my prime not when i was 65 like i had
11:52to do a month
11:52to go well speaking speaking of your blue line skills wiggy declared yesterday on this show
11:59that you were a better defenseman than number four right well harry always said um if we're down by a
12:10goal uh bobby would be on the ice and if we're up by goal he'd be putting me on the
12:16ice so all right
12:17um look at it you know so that's that's the way uh harry rolled and harry knew his hockey pretty
12:25good
12:25but uh when it comes to uh bobby um he's he's number one and um he changed the game and
12:34just an
12:34amazing player in person so he uh set the standard for uh people to come behind him most important
12:40question for this show ray what did marco uh get at tresca uh he didn't tell you no details on
12:50uh
12:50on what he had but uh a couple of the coaches went for dinner they had a great meal um
12:57and uh
12:58yeah they uh rich uh rich partner chef uh and sarah took good care of them so i just woke
13:06up to a
13:06saying they had an amazing meal well the the signature dish over there curtis is the veal
13:13chop parmesan which which i believe they call that the right board that's like fred flintstone uh
13:20you know that big big kind of uh meal he had on his plate i mean it takes the whole
13:27plate
13:28if you're if you're finished it man you're good because uh it's it's pretty good the next day or
13:34later that night it's uh it's a meal that a lot of times you'll bring home not not for me
13:39currently
13:40because i'm i'm watching my weight right yeah that's for you he's watching his weight rise
13:51all right and hey before you go the captain's ball is coming up pretty soon ray
13:58yeah it's a week from today and it's uh it's our fifth uh year of um
14:06celebrating um pete cradys amazing life um and and keeping his memory alive um five years
14:15five years ago after pete passed um my wife and i approached the cradys and asked if they wanted
14:22to team up and uh keep pete's memory alive and honor him every year with uh the captain's ball
14:29that my wife said that you know our events is a road race a walk we have a golf tournament
14:34and she
14:35said why don't we have something that has nothing to do with sports where girls could get all dolled up
14:40and and dress and and just go out and have an amazing night and we created uh the captain's ball
14:47that now five years in um money goes to uh the healy center out of mass general where there's
14:54treatments and research and pete's als foundation that gives grants out to families affected with
15:01als um and uh it's an amazing night uh you go to uh www.borkgala.com for information still uh

15:46he got
15:46diagnosed uh and what he was all about was just finding a cure and finding a way to fight this
15:54horrible disease and we always kind of supported what he was doing while he was doing it and once he
16:00passed we decided that uh you know just an amazing person that let's let's do this uh and his memory
16:09so
