New England falls short in Chicago, 30-24. Instant reaction to the loss? WHO IS TO BLAME? Did Williams outplay Maye? Were the Patriots outcoached? Thoughts on the defense? Curtis: "That stadium was unbelievable"
Caleb Williams vs. Drake Maye: Same draft class, two completely different worlds. Curtis: "Each landed in the proper place". Did each team land a generational talent?

00:00To me, I thought it was right in front of me when Caleb took that sack.
00:05When brilliant coaching, by the way, with the intentional offsides.
00:08I don't know if they talked about that in the broadcast.
00:10Yeah, they did.
00:11And then you had the three timeouts, and the only thing Caleb couldn't do
00:14was take a sack in that spot, and he didn't.
00:17Everybody around me was like, why are you kicking this, Ben Johnson?
00:20This is the dumbest idea in the world until he got it through the uprights
00:23because I thought that gave the Pats a chance.
00:26The only other thing, too, though, that Drake may pick is the difference
00:31because if you just get a field goal there on that drive,
00:34then you at least have the ball in the end needing a touchdown to win it
00:37as opposed to being down nine and needing to kick the field goal in the onside.
00:39I would just, and far be it from me that Drake may stay in here,
00:42I would also just push back.
00:44I think the untimely penalties screwed you in the fourth quarter, right?
00:48You get to third and one, false start.
00:51You get to third and six.
00:52You get it to fourth and two now because of a Drake may scramble.
00:54Well, another false start, and now you have to punt.
00:57You can't go for it.
00:58Like, that screwed you.
01:00Curtis is right.
01:01Like, the pick in the end zone does kill you a little bit.
01:03Yeah, it hurts, but it was early enough in the game
01:06that you were able to bounce back from it.
01:08Listen, I get it.
01:10Young quarterbacks are going to do young quarterback things.
01:13I mean, I'm glad to hear you say it's not in your mind a decision thing.
01:18It's a poor throw thing as opposed to not seeing that there's somebody there
01:24underneath or whatever, so I'll take you at your educated word.
01:29I mean, there's somebody there because the guy's playing man-to-man on him.
01:32Like, Drake may knew that there was a guy covering him.
01:35He just made a poor throw, like I said, more than anything.
01:39But he threw it into a Bears team meeting.
01:44No, no, not that one.
01:45That was right at the linebacker.
01:47There was one guy there.
01:48But there's – and again, Wiggy, way more intelligent than I am
01:52when it comes to football.
01:53But you're not throwing to a guy who's wide open.
01:57You're throwing to a guy who's covered.
01:59So you've got to make sure that he's trying at times, I think,
02:05to force things into where they may not necessarily should be.
02:09Well, if you really go back and look at the play,
02:11this is a great play for me to have a weekly breakdown next week for.
02:14But if you really go back and look at the play, right,
02:17it's a seam route up the seam by Reardon.
02:21He gets enough separation because in the NFL you don't need but a step or two
02:26on a guy to be open.
02:28He gets enough separation.
02:29The ball just has to be thrown at the back goal line.
02:35It can't be thrown on a line like he did.
02:38He has to put some air under it and Reardon almost has to go over the top
02:42and kind of like take it out of the air.
02:45And what he does is just he like throws it like he's thrown it on a line
02:48and all the linebackers do – linebacker has to do because the linebacker,
02:53if you look at him, he's behind Reardon.
02:55So Reardon's open.
02:56But as soon as he turns around, the ball's like right there.
02:59The safety isn't getting over there late.
03:01So the safety's not going to make a play on the ball.
03:03So like I said, to me it wasn't a bad decision.
03:05It was just a bad throw.
03:06This is Mike from Florida.
03:10Shime, you might have to bring – oh, no, I can do it.
03:13There we go.
03:13Mike, what's up?
03:14Morning, guys.
03:14How are we doing today?
03:15Great.
03:15How are you?
03:16Happy Friday.
03:17You know, I don't like the word or the term moral victory.
03:21I don't think that that's what this was, even if you were somebody like that term.
03:25But, you know, you got to look at the secondaries depleted.
03:31The offensive line is in shambles.
03:33And that made – I think that what Shime was talking about with the untimely penalties,
03:38that was a huge part of it.
03:40You've got these young, unexperienced guys playing O-line.
03:44They've got a hell of a pass rush in Chicago.
03:46And they just struggled, you know, to try and keep their heads, you know, on straight.
03:51So, I think that you look at it and say, you know, with a short week, lack of preparation,
03:57a lot of guys out, you can say, you know, we hung in there with that team that looks
04:02pretty damn good.
04:03But I wanted to ask Curtis a question because he mentioned the stadium.
04:08You know, you hear people all over the place talk about that stadium as if it's, you know,
04:13like not great or something.
04:14And on TV, at least, it looks awesome.
04:17And I'm looking at it and I'm saying, how is this team, with all these guys dressed like
04:22Mike Ditka, you know, how is this team supposed to move to freaking Indiana?
04:27Are you kidding me?
04:29It's in Grassfield and it's right downtown.
04:33And the sight lines are so much better than Gillette.
04:36It was just – it's no frills.
04:38Like, it's not like, I don't know, what the new – like, the Vegas stadium or one
04:42of those, like, crazy things with incredible concessions and video boards and everything
04:45else.
04:46There's not a lot of bells and whistles is what you're saying, Curtis.
04:49And we had, like – we were – I was literally standing in front of the Bears coaching staff.
04:54Like, I had – at the 50-yard line, it was the most perfect views of everything.
04:59The other thing, though, by the way, like, just on the game, did – that Josh McDaniels'
05:05third down call, and then on the first drive where they go for it on fourth down, with
05:10this play clock expiring, was the dumbest thing I've ever seen.
05:15Like, why wouldn't you just take a timeout in that spot?
05:17They rushed the snap, they didn't have a play ready, and they give the momentum immediately
05:22back to the Bears.
05:24It was such a weird series of events.
05:26I thought Ben Johnson out-coached Josh McDaniels.
05:28Curtis, they did the same thing on third down, too.
05:31Like, the play clock was expiring, Drake was kind of rushing to get the protection set,
05:34and, like, I don't know if it was, like, just they weren't prepared enough for the blitzes
05:41Dennis Allen was sending on the first drive, or what it was, but, like, they were not getting
05:45it in in time.
05:46Well, that's the one thing I did notice, and I did, like, kind of jot down, is that
05:51they had a hard time when it came to the blitzing.
05:54Like, there was a couple times where they were blitzing, and guys were coming free, but
06:01there were two guys that weren't blocking anybody.
06:04Like, they were really confused about the blitzing that was going on, and so there were
06:09a couple times, there were free runners, and then there were a couple times where they
06:13didn't have built-in hot routes.
06:15Like, they didn't have a built-in hot route, and you think, like, all right, in this situation,
06:19if somebody comes, I'm thinking, like, oh, this is the perfect time to, you know, whether
06:23it's Pop or A.J. Brown, just to run a slam.
06:26Who?
06:26Pop.
06:27A.J. Brown?
06:28Oh, yeah, yeah.
06:28Is A.J. Brown going to be involved in the actual offense at any point during the season?
06:33Yeah.
06:33It was a good throw to him, but down the sideline where the defender had his, like, arms, he
06:39was pulling on him.
06:40How is that not...
06:41P.I.?
06:42Yeah, he had, like, his arm laid over A.J.'s arms.
06:45I don't...
06:45It was pretty early, but...
06:46Yeah, that was one of those things that you could have called passing the first.
06:49I'm just saying that I think that that's where the Bears got them, especially early in the
06:54game.
06:54All right.
06:55Well, it's a sister station of ours, Curtis, that you're at.
06:57It is.
06:58I'm at the SCORE, WSCR, here in Odyssey, Chicago.
07:02Mitch Rosen, the boss down here, very nice gentleman, got me all situated.
07:05Awesome.
07:06And my man, Jarrett Payton, my friend's brother-in-law, is hosting the morning show right down the hall
07:11here.
07:11Excellent.
07:12Okay.
07:12Great day all around.
07:13All right.
07:14Your lead this morning, Curtis?
07:15We did the conversation in the days preceding the game regarding Caleb versus Drake, and
07:22I had nothing...
07:24Nothing I saw last night got me off the point that Drake is a guy I would take ahead of...
07:29I mean, Caleb is a guy I would take ahead of Drake should they be redrafted tomorrow.
07:33However, I think each landed in the proper place because I don't believe that Caleb Williams
07:41is a guy that would have fit in in Boston given the Tom Brady aura, and that everything that
07:50Drake does is compared to the greatest of all time, and the appetite and the taste is champagne
07:56and caviar for the quarterback position in Boston.
07:59Whereas in Chicago, they have literally never had a good to great quarterback as their starting
08:06franchise QB.
08:08And when you think about the way in which they're so similar in that they're the same
08:12draft class, they're both, you know, elusive in the pocket, very, very, very talented, great
08:17young players, but the places they went could not be more different, where you have the six-time
08:23Super Bowl champion Patriots, you have Vrabel, the head coach, you have the pedigree, everything's
08:27championship-based, and you have the quarterback position, which was the best it ever was, and
08:31you have Caleb Williams entering a team that is basically in the quarterback desert, that
08:36has been starving for a great player, and he has the confidence where he's actually the
08:41one giving the fans a reason to believe, whereas in Boston, the fans are looking for reasons
08:46to disbelieve in their quarterback, if that makes sense.
08:49Well, you know what a thing I saw in the kind of, you know, I had a couple different leads,
08:54so I could probably just kind of touch on this a little bit.
08:57Well, can you wait?
08:58Oh, I was just going to, go ahead, yeah.
09:00I mean, if it's your lead.
09:01No, no, it's not my, I said I had a couple different leads, this is one of them, I have
09:06a football, both Drake and Caleb, I have two basketball leads, so it's like, you know,
09:12whichever one you want.
09:13I have a basketball lead.
09:14Okay.
09:14Oh, I did too.
09:15All right.
09:16Mine's Jason Tatum.
09:18Mine too.
09:18See, I had a different basketball lead as well, so.
09:21You can do it, Jason Tatum.
09:22All right, and I would just say, like, to Curtis's point, like, last night in the game, and we
09:27talk about, like, personalities, Jason Tatum, Jalen Brown, and things like that nature,
09:30like Caleb Williams' personality in last night's game, like, look at how he was, like, yelling
09:37and screaming at times, and just Drake is complete opposite.
09:42Cool, calm, collected is what you're saying about Drake.
09:44No, no, not cool, calm, collected.
09:46He's just not a fiery, emotional person, right?
09:49You know what I mean?
09:50Like, there was a time.
09:50He's not a get in your face, we're going to go out there, and we're going to score on
09:55this drive, and he's not that.
09:56Oh, there was a time that it looked like Caleb didn't like the play call, or after the third
10:00down, he came off the field, and you could tell he was upset, and he was barking on,
10:04you know, whoever.
10:05Where Drake, he'll just come off to the sidelines, and just, you know, he won't say anything.
10:11Grab the iPad.
10:11Yeah, and it's, like, so, the point that I'm trying to make is that the personalities, I
10:17think, you know, they fit well, and it works well, like, to Curtis' point, in Chicago, because
10:22they want that, and here, our football fans, like, they don't give Drake May a problem
10:28for not being fiery and barking most of the time.
10:31No, I think they are more likely to give him a problem for throwing picks in the end
10:37zone, which can cost you games.
10:40Yeah, but I mean, even Caleb Williams is going to throw picks, so I think it's really the
10:44personality based into Curtis' lead.
10:46It's pretty cool, but both of them are going to, like, be the face of the league, and I
10:50think Caleb is going to really, really set the market.
10:53God, he's so good, by the way.
10:54If he continues to play like that.
10:55I mean, Drake is good, but just, you could see, like, Caleb's sailing upside, and just
11:01because of his skill set.
11:02You think he has a higher ceiling than Drake?
11:03Yes, because of his skill set?
11:05Yeah, for sure.
11:05Okay.
11:06But he does have the advantage in coaching.
11:07You have to give that edge where I agree.
11:11I don't think Drake is better than Caleb, but Caleb with Ben Johnson is a much bigger
11:17cheat code than Drake with Josh McDaniels.
11:19Well, you said it earlier.
11:20You think the Patriots got out-coached last night.
11:23Definitely offensively.
11:24Absolutely.
11:24I thought Ben Johnson coached circles around Josh McDaniels.
