00:00Glow forth and tell, O Church of God arise,
00:06Sorrow in the strength, which by storm all supplies,
00:12Go till all nations his great name adore,
00:18And serve him more than heeth for evermore.
00:25Well, good evening, everyone.
00:27Good evening, everyone. It's wonderful to be able to gather in the name of the Lord here in Charteridge,
00:32especially with Brian Edwards coming to share with what he has to tell us this evening.
00:36But it is a privilege not only to be here in Charteridge,
00:39but also to be in the presence of the Lord as we believe that we are.
00:43For Christ and God the Father, he tells us, dwells in us.
00:47He's not far away. He isn't lost or hidden or busy somewhere, but he is with us always.
00:542 Timothy 3, verse 10.
00:58But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, long-suffering,
01:04love, perseverance, persecutions, afflictions which happened to me
01:08at Antioch, at Arsonium, at Lystra.
01:12What persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord delivered me.
01:16Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
01:21But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.
01:27But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of,
01:31knowing from whom you have learned them,
01:34and that from childhood you have known the holy scriptures,
01:37which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
01:43All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
01:46and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
01:50for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
01:53that the man of God may be complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work.
02:00Amen.
02:01And to that end, we are meeting tonight,
02:03and Brian is going to share what he has to share from the Tyndale Bible and the Tyndale Foundation.
02:09I thought it would be helpful this evening if we take a reading from Tyndale's New Testament,
02:14and on the screen I hope you can see it.
02:16We do know approximately how people spoke then.
02:20I can answer that in Q&A if you want to later as to how we know,
02:23but I'm not going to try and copy the words from there.
02:27It's sufficient to say, basically, there was no spelling then,
02:32so as you spoke, so you wrote.
02:35So if there are vowels and consonants in the word on the screen,
02:39they would almost always be pronounced.
02:42So watch the screen.
02:46Though I speak with the tongues of men and angels,
02:50and yet had no love,
02:51I were even as sounding brass,
02:54and as a tinkling cymbal,
02:56and though I could prophesy,
02:58and understood all secretes,
03:00and all knowledge,
03:02yea, if I had all faith,
03:04so that I could move mountains out of their places,
03:08and yet had no love,
03:10I were nothing.
03:11And though I bestowed all my goodness to feed the poor,
03:16and though I gave my body even that I burned,
03:19and yet I had no love,
03:21it profiteth me nothing.
03:24Love suffereth long,
03:26and is courteous.
03:28Love envieth not,
03:30love doth not,
03:31frowardly swelleth not,
03:33dealeth not dishonestly,
03:34seeketh not her owen,
03:36it is not provoked to anger,
03:39thinketh not evil,
03:40reoiceth not in iniquity,
03:42but reoiceth in the truth,
03:45suffereth all fingers,
03:47believeth all fingers,
03:49hopeth all fingers,
03:51endureth in all fingers,
03:53though that prophesying fail,
03:55other tongues shall cease,
03:58and knowledge vanish away,
04:01yet love faileth never away,
04:03for our knowledge is unparfeet,
04:07and our prophesying is unparfeet,
04:10but when that which is perfect is come,
04:13then that which is unparfeet shall be done away.
04:17When I was a child,
04:19a speck as a child,
04:21I understood as a child,
04:24I imagined as a child,
04:26but as soon I was a man,
04:28I put away a childishness.
04:31Now we see in a glass,
04:33even a dead expear king,
04:35but then shall we see face to face,
04:38now I know unparfeet,
04:41and then shall I know,
04:43even as I am no one,
04:45now abides faith,
04:47hope,
04:47and love,
04:49even these three,
04:50but the chief of all these
04:52is love.
04:54Early in the 16th century,
04:57Europe was changing,
04:59and it was changing rapidly.
05:01It was the age of the Enlightenment
05:04when men were thinking more freely.
05:07The French called it the Renaissance,
05:09meaning new birth.
05:11New ideas were bursting out
05:13in art and literature,
05:15architecture and politics.
05:17Leonardo da Vinci,
05:18Raphael,
05:19Michelangelo,
05:20Machiavelli,
05:20they were all contemporaries
05:22of William Tyndale.
05:24In 1516,
05:26Thomas More had published
05:27Utopia.
05:28It was an instant bestseller
05:30in his utopian
05:32make-believe perfect society
05:33there would be
05:34freedom of religion,
05:38freedom from class distinction,
05:40which was very interesting
05:42from the most bitter enemy
05:44of the evangelicals
05:45who vowed
05:45if he could,
05:47he would put all evangelicals
05:48into the frying pan
05:49if he could get hold of them.
05:51And when he did,
05:52he did.
05:54But that was his real world,
05:56not Utopia.
05:58Men believed that by knowledge
06:00they could vastly improve their lot,
06:02and Utopia was a kind
06:04of Christian humanism,
06:05some call it even
06:06a communism.
06:07It had an immense effect
06:09on the minds of scholars.
06:11It was also the age
06:12of discovery.
06:14Great mariners
06:15were opening up
06:15the continents.
06:16Christopher Columbus
06:17discovered the West Indies
06:18and America.
06:19The crew of Ferdinand Magallan
06:21reached the Philippines
06:22to complete the first
06:23round-the-world voyage,
06:24and Vasco da Gama
06:26was the first to sail
06:27directly from Europe
06:29to India.
06:30But, from our point of view,
06:32more importantly,
06:33it was the age
06:34of invention.
06:36The power of the watermill,
06:38mechanical clocks,
06:40and above all,
06:42the printing press.
06:43There were scores
06:43on the continent,
06:4540 in one street
06:46in Antwerp alone.
06:47Caxton was here
06:48in Fleet Street
06:49in London
06:49in 1476.
06:51A world of reading
06:53was opening up.
06:55From the 1520s,
06:57the English language
06:58was changing.
07:00Middle English
07:01was changing
07:04into modern English.
07:06And the Bible
07:07of John Wycliffe
07:08and his team
07:08just 100 years earlier
07:10was becoming unreadable.
07:12Recent research
07:13shows that possibly,
07:14believe it or not,
07:15half the population
07:16could read
07:17up to a point.
07:18Many people could read
07:19even though
07:20they couldn't write.
07:21That was not uncommon.
07:23The printing press
07:24made it easier
07:26to read than handwriting
07:27and the printed Bible
07:28would be a huge incentive
07:31for learning to read.
07:32And here in England,
07:34religion
07:35was in a turmoil.
07:38On the death
07:39of his brother Arthur,
07:40Henry VIII
07:41came to the throne
07:41in 1509,
07:43a young,
07:44handsome,
07:45ambitious young man.
07:47He married
07:48his brother's widow,
07:49Catherine,
07:50but after many
07:51miscarriages,
07:52she could only
07:53produce a girl,
07:54the future Mary I,
07:55and Henry
07:56wanted a boy.
07:58So he wanted
07:59to divorce
08:00and marry Anne Boleyn.
08:02But the Pope,
08:04Clement VII,
08:05wouldn't play ball
08:06and Henry's Chancellor,
08:08Cardinal Wolsey,
08:08failed to persuade him.
08:10Thomas More
08:10took up his place
08:12and he was
08:13no more successful.
08:15And in all this,
08:17the Church of Rome
08:18could not remain
08:19unchallenged.
08:20It's a matter
08:21of history
08:22that the
08:2416th century
08:25Roman Catholic Church
08:26here and across Europe
08:28was unbelievably corrupt.
08:31Many popes,
08:33priests,
08:33monks
08:33lived immoral
08:35and worldly lives.
08:37Many priests
08:38were totally ignorant
08:39of biblical truth
08:40and they preyed
08:41on the superstitious people.
08:43That magnificent edifice,
08:46the building of
08:47St. Peter's
08:47in Rome,
08:48began in 1506
08:50and the beautiful structure
08:52took a hundred years
08:53to complete.
08:54To fund it,
08:56Pope Julius
08:56introduced indulgences,
08:59free time
09:00of purgatory
09:02for a price
09:05at exorbitant prices.
09:07His successor,
09:08Leo X,
09:09simply ramped up
09:10the sales.
09:12It was also
09:13the age of relics.
09:14The castle church
09:15in Wittenberg
09:16boasted over
09:175,000 relics,
09:19each one offering
09:19a hundred days
09:20of purgatory.
09:21It included
09:22a rock
09:23spattered
09:23with Jesus' blood,
09:25some hair
09:26of Christ
09:26and part
09:27of his purple robe,
09:28also pieces
09:29of his gown,
09:31veil and girdle
09:32of Mary
09:33and even some milk
09:34from her breasts.
09:36Oh,
09:36there were 35 pieces
09:37of the cross,
09:39which isn't surprising
09:40because according
09:41to Erasmus,
09:42their great theologian,
09:43there were sufficient
09:44pieces of the cross
09:46to float a battleship.
09:49Erasmus,
09:50since we mention him,
09:52the Church of Rome's
09:53greatest theologian
09:54and scholar of the day
09:55was disgusted
09:56when in Canterbury
09:57he was expected
09:58to kiss the skulls
09:59and jawbones,
10:00arms and legs
10:01of the saints.
10:03He wrote,
10:04no word of Christ
10:05is heard in the pulpits.
10:07I doubt
10:08whether in the whole
10:10history of Christianity
10:11the heads of the Church
10:13have been so grossly worldly
10:14as at the present moment.
10:17Pious Dean Collet
10:19of St Paul's in London
10:20went further,
10:22O priests,
10:23O priesthood,
10:24O the detestable impiety
10:26of those miserable priests
10:28of whom this age of ours
10:29contains a great multitude,
10:31who fear not to rush
10:33from the bosom
10:33of some foul harlot
10:35into the temple
10:35of the Church,
10:36to the altar of Christ,
10:38to the mysteries of God,
10:39abandoned creatures
10:41on whom the vengeance
10:42of God
10:43will one day
10:44fall the heavier
10:45the more shamelessly
10:46they have intruded
10:48themselves
10:48on the divine office.
10:51They were,
10:52unfortunately,
10:53ineffective.
10:54They weren't
10:55the only voices
10:56crying out
10:56against the state
10:57of the Church.
10:58But they were ineffective
11:00for two reasons.
11:01First,
11:02they didn't go
11:02to the cause
11:03of the problem,
11:03which was a total
11:04ignorance of God's word
11:06and the gospel.
11:07And second,
11:08a fear of the consequences.
11:10Erasmus once said,
11:12I follow the Pope
11:13and the Emperor
11:13when they do well
11:15because it is pious
11:16to do so.
11:17I fear their bad decisions
11:19because it is safe
11:21to do so.
11:23There was no Bible
11:25in English.
11:27Many priests
11:28couldn't read Latin
11:29and they were not
11:29interested in the Bible
11:31even if they could.
11:32Any bits of translation
11:34so far
11:35had been translated
11:36from the 4th century
11:37Latin by Jerome
11:39known as the Vulgate.
11:41There was almost nothing
11:43until John Wycliffe
11:44and his team
11:45provided an English Bible
11:46around 1380.
11:48But this was handwritten
11:49and therefore copies
11:51were large volumes.
11:53Nevertheless,
11:54it had a huge influence
11:55as the Lollards,
11:57his followers,
11:58preached across the country.
11:59But it was a translation
12:01into Middle English
12:03and as we said,
12:05it came from a Latin translation
12:06and Anglo-Saxon
12:08or Old English
12:09had changed
12:10into Middle English
12:11and was now changing again.
12:14Conversation was changing
12:15into Modern English,
12:18our English.
12:19So Wycliffe's Middle English Bible
12:21was frankly becoming unreadable.
12:24Most countries in Europe
12:26by now had a translation
12:27of the Bible
12:28in their own language.
12:29but in England
12:30things were very different.
12:34By the constitutions of Oxford
12:371408-1409
12:39it was forbidden
12:40on pain of death
12:41and excommunication
12:43for anyone
12:44to read the Bible in English
12:46without a bishop's license.
12:48Anyway,
12:49why would they need it?
12:50French
12:51was the language
12:52of royal court
12:53and society.
12:54Henry claimed
12:55to be king of England
12:56and France
12:57and Latin
12:59was the language
12:59of the church
13:00and law.
13:02English was left
13:03to the commoners
13:05and the church claimed
13:06they wouldn't understand
13:07the Bible
13:07even if they had it.
13:09The church told them
13:10what to believe.
13:11There was no need
13:13for a Bible.
13:14And to reinforce
13:16the constitutions
13:18of Oxford
13:18on the 4th of April
13:201519
13:21a woman and six men
13:23were burnt to death
13:24in Coventry
13:25for teaching their children
13:26the Lord's Prayer
13:28the Ten Commandments
13:29and the Apostles' Creed
13:31in English.
13:34That
13:34was all about to change.
13:37In May 1453
13:39Constantinople
13:40Istanbul
13:41as we know it today
13:42the bastion of Christianity
13:43in the East
13:44fell to the armies
13:45of Islam
13:46and vital documents
13:47were brought to the West
13:48by fleeing scholars
13:49including
13:50manuscripts
13:51of the
13:53New Greek
13:54New Testament.
13:56Erasmus
13:57the great scholar
13:58and theologian
13:59of the Catholic Church
14:00and we've already met
14:01arrived in Cambridge
14:02in 1511
14:03to lecture in Greek
14:04and five years later
14:06he published
14:06the first complete
14:07New Testament
14:08in the original
14:09Greek text.
14:11But who
14:12could read
14:12Greek?
14:15Tindale was born
14:16around 1491
14:18coincidentally
14:20the same year
14:21as King Henry
14:22in Gloucestershire
14:23and went up to
14:24Oxford
14:25in 1507
14:27transferring to Cambridge
14:28around 1519.
14:31By 1516
14:33many young men
14:34in Cambridge
14:34were now
14:35enthusiastically
14:36reading and discussing
14:37the New Testament
14:38in the original language.
14:40Reformation theology
14:42was beginning
14:43to form
14:44in their minds.
14:45Ad fontes

14:47to the source
14:48and

14:53And so
14:53the decisive

15:14violently
15:15opposed
15:16to reform.

15:26some of which
15:27you will be
15:27familiar with
15:28were all there
15:30at Cambridge
15:30though not at the
15:31same time.
15:33Nine out of those
15:34met a martyr's death
15:35where they were
15:37discussing the doctrines
15:38of the Reformation
15:39from their Greek
15:40New Testament.
15:42And it was this
15:43conviction that was
15:44driving Tyndale
15:45to study and
15:46translate the Bible.
15:49In 1521
15:50William arrived
15:51at the manor house
15:52of Little Sodbury
15:53close to his
15:54birthplace in
15:55Gloucestershire.
15:55He arrived there
15:57to tutor the two
15:57young sons of
15:58Sir John and
15:59Lady Walsh.
16:01The Walsh family
16:02were quietly
16:03open to reform
16:04and in his
16:06little garret
16:07room in
16:08Little Sodbury
16:08Manor
16:09overlooking the
16:09Gloucestershire
16:10countryside
16:11William Tyndale
16:12began his
16:13life's work
16:13in translating
16:14the Bible
16:15and it was
16:15here
16:16at the
16:17manor in
16:17Little Sodbury
16:18that the
16:18young tutor
16:19found himself
16:20crossing verbal
16:21swords with
16:22a wandering
16:23friar
16:23who in
16:24desperation at
16:25the constant
16:26use of
16:26scripture by
16:27his opponent
16:28declared
16:28we were
16:29better be
16:30without God's
16:31laws than
16:32without the
16:32Pope's.
16:33Tindale
16:34responded
16:35I defy the
16:36Pope and
16:37all his
16:38laws
16:38if God
16:39spare my
16:40life ere
16:41many years
16:42I will
16:43cause a
16:43boy that
16:44driveth a
16:44plough
16:45shall know
16:45more of
16:46the scriptures
16:46than thou
16:47dost.
16:50Eleven miles
16:51from Little
16:51Sodbury was
16:52Bristol

17:08that was
17:09stirring in
17:09his heart
17:10and mind
17:11Tindale
17:12doubtless
17:13preached
17:13as he
17:14later wrote
17:15if thou
17:17repent
17:17and believe
17:18the promises
17:19then God's

17:53more
17:53nor think
17:54on them
17:55anymore
17:57now after
17:58this kind

17:58outside
17:59Bristol

18:00Tyndale

18:03for an
18:04inquisition
18:05and a
18:05warning
18:06he realised
18:07it would be
18:07unfair to
18:08stay much
18:09longer
18:09with the
18:10Walsh
18:10family
18:10he must
18:12move on
18:13in
18:14in 1523
18:15the young
18:16graduate
18:16from
18:17Cambridge
18:17arrived

18:35anywhere
18:36you pass
18:36those great
18:37religious
18:37houses
18:38that swallowed
18:39the nation's
18:39resources
18:40and held
18:41it in
18:42superstition
18:42ignorance
18:43and fear
18:44when Tyndale
18:46arrived in
18:46the city
18:47in 1523
18:48he carried
18:49letters of
18:49introduction
18:50from Sir
18:51John Walsh
18:51and he hoped
18:52these would
18:53determine his
18:53future course
18:54they did
18:55but in a
18:56very unexpected
18:57way
18:59he stayed
19:00first with
19:00Humphrey
19:01Monmouth
19:01a merchant
19:03who traded
19:03with the

19:14Tyndale
19:15was a

19:17had
19:17completed
19:18his
19:18German
19:18translation
19:19of the
19:19New
19:19Testament
19:20in 1522
19:21and very
19:22soon
19:22copies
19:23were being
19:23smuggled
19:24into
19:24England
19:26Monmouth
19:26was a

19:27of

19:30which was
19:30we are
19:31told
19:31a nest
19:32of
19:32reformers
19:33Tyndale
19:34was invited
19:35to preach
19:35and in
19:36the home
19:37of Humphrey
19:38and Jane
19:38Monmouth
19:38Tyndale
19:39began
19:40working
19:40on his
19:41translation
19:42he hoped
19:43that Bishop
19:44Tunstall of
19:45London
19:45might offer
19:46him a place
19:46on his
19:47staff to
19:47continue
19:47his
19:48translation
19:49but there
19:50was no
19:50chance
19:51of that
19:51so
19:52realising
19:53that in
19:53the light
19:54of those
19:54constitutions
19:55of Oxford
19:56which forbade
19:57even a sentence
19:58of scripture
19:58in English
19:59he couldn't
20:00continue his
20:01work in
20:02England
20:02in 1524
20:04without the
20:05king's
20:06permission
20:06William Tyndale
20:08slipped across
20:08to the
20:09continent
20:09never to
20:10see his
20:11homeland
20:11again
20:13where did
20:14he go
20:15likely to
20:16Hamburg
20:17first
20:17and with
20:18good reason
20:19we believe
20:20he moved
20:20on to
20:21Wittenberg
20:21Luther
20:22city
20:22though there's
20:23no evidence
20:23he ever met
20:24with Luther
20:25and thus
20:26began 11
20:26years
20:27of hide
20:28and seek
20:29by April
20:311525
20:32he was
20:33back in
20:33Hamburg
20:33and then
20:34Cologne
20:35late in
20:361527
20:37a quarter

20:39of his
20:39New Testament

20:40come off
20:41the press
20:41of Peter
20:42Quentel
20:42speed
20:43was essential
20:45Cologne
20:46as we've
20:47indicated
20:47was the
20:48centre for
20:48printing
20:49on the
20:49continent
20:49Tyndale
20:51was halfway
20:51through
20:51Mark's
20:52Gospel
20:52when the
20:53work
20:53was
20:54discovered
20:54he was
20:56warned
20:56just in
20:57time
20:57and he
20:58gathered a
20:59few sheets
20:59of the
20:59printed
21:00work
21:00and fled
21:01up the
21:01Rhine
21:01by night
21:02to Worms
21:03and here
21:04as much
21:05as he
21:05could rescue
21:06was bound
21:06and in
21:07the spring
21:07of 1525
21:09his prologue
21:10and the
21:11first 22
21:12chapters
21:12of Matthew
21:13were on
21:15the printing
21:15press
21:16and arrived
21:16in England
21:17this was
21:18the first
21:19text
21:19of the
21:20New Testament
21:21translated
21:22from the
21:23Greek
21:23and printed
21:24it's known
21:25as the
21:25Cologne
21:26fragment
21:28Tindale
21:29now revised
21:30and improved
21:31his translation
21:32and the
21:33following year
21:331526
21:34the new
21:35and complete
21:36edition of
21:36the firm's
21:37New Testament
21:38was arriving
21:39among those
21:39German merchants
21:40in London
21:41and secretly
21:42carried across
21:43the country
21:44so let's
21:46pause and ask
21:47the question
21:47what kind
21:48of book
21:48was it
21:49well here's
21:51part of the
21:52epistle to the
21:53reader
21:53in modern
21:54English
21:56give
21:56diligence
21:57dear
21:57reader
21:58I
21:58exhort
21:58thee
21:58that
22:00thou
22:00come
22:00with
22:00a
22:01pure
22:01mind
22:02and
22:02as
22:02the
22:03scripture
22:03saith with
22:03a single
22:04eye
22:04unto the
22:05words of
22:06health
22:06and of
22:07eternal
22:08life
22:08by the
22:09which
22:09if we
22:10repent
22:10and believe
22:11them
22:11we are
22:12born
22:12anew
22:13created
22:13afresh
22:14and enjoy
22:15the fruits
22:16of the
22:16blood
22:17of Christ
22:17wisely
22:18Tindale urged
22:19his readers
22:20to notice
22:20the plain
22:21and clear
22:21parts of
22:22scripture
22:22and
22:24to be
22:24careful
22:25in hard
22:25places
22:25not to
22:26add
22:26anything
22:27to that
22:28which is
22:28plain
22:28notice also
22:30he continued
22:31the difference
22:32between the
22:32law
22:33and the
22:33gospel
22:34the one
22:35asks
22:35and requires
22:36the other
22:37pardons
22:38and forgives
22:41Tindale
22:41was well
22:42qualified to
22:43translate
22:43a contemporary
22:44tells us
22:45that he was
22:46proficient in
22:46Hebrew
22:47Greek
22:48Latin
22:48Italian
22:49Spanish
22:50French
22:50and German
22:51and whichever
22:53one he spoke
22:54it was as if
22:55it was his
22:56native tongue
22:57this was the
22:58first English
22:59translation from
23:00the original
23:01Greek
23:01and the first
23:03to use the
23:03printing press
23:04he had
23:05Erasmus'
23:06Greek text
23:07of 1516
23:08he had a
23:09Latin
23:09Vulgate
23:10and Luther's
23:11German
23:11New Testament
23:12there is no
23:13evidence
23:14that Tindale
23:15ever possessed
23:16a Wycliffe
23:16Bible
23:18Tindale made
23:19some crucial
23:20word changes
23:21from the
23:22common use
23:23to avoid
23:23the Roman
23:24Catholic
23:24meaning
23:25penance
23:26became
23:27repentance
23:27charity
23:28became love
23:30what a tragedy
23:31the King James
23:32authorised version
23:32went back
23:33to charity
23:34it meant
23:35something very
23:36different
23:36at that time
23:38confession
23:39became
23:39acknowledgement
23:40grace
23:41became favour
23:42priest
23:43became senior
23:44or in 1534
23:45he moved it
23:46to elder
23:46and church
23:47became congregation
23:49with no
23:50formal spelling
23:51until Dr Johnson
23:52in the 18th century
23:53Tindale has
23:55three ways
23:55of spelling
23:56the word
23:56imperfect
23:57in the same
23:58paragraph
23:58and I've
23:59discovered
24:00at least
24:00eight ways
24:01of spelling
24:02the word
24:02it
24:02for in
24:04Matthew 5
24:0534 and 35
24:06alone
24:06you can check
24:07it out
24:08for yourself
24:09the value
24:10of Tindale's
24:11translation
24:12is not to be
24:12measured
24:13simply by
24:14the reliance
24:15of it
24:15by the
24:16King James
24:17version
24:17that's
24:19as David
24:19Crystal's
24:20brilliant
24:20and detailed
24:21research
24:21is shown
24:22is a slippery
24:23fish
24:23it all depends
24:25how you count
24:26exactness
24:27and influence
24:28his contribution
24:29must be seen
24:30against the
24:30background
24:31of two
24:31major obstacles
24:33he had to face
24:34first
24:35English
24:35was seen
24:36as unfit
24:37for intellectual
24:37and literary
24:38expression
24:39it was considered
24:40dull
24:41and base
24:42Latin
24:43and French
24:44were considered
24:45more elegant
24:46and second
24:47the church
24:48and its bishops
24:49considered that
24:50the common people
24:50didn't need the Bible
24:51in their own tongue
24:53since the church
24:54told them what to believe
24:55and they wouldn't
24:56understand it anyway
24:57hence those
24:58constitutions of Oxford
25:01Tindale profoundly
25:02disagreed with both
25:03he maintained
25:05and on good reason
25:06that both Hebrew
25:08and Greek
25:08agreed in form
25:09with English
25:10better than with Latin
25:11and the common people
25:13anyway
25:13must have the Bible
25:14in their own tongue
25:15so that they can test
25:17the beliefs
25:17and the behaviour
25:18of the church
25:21Tindale's influence
25:22on the English language
25:24was massive
25:24and here we're
25:26indebted to
25:27David Crystal's
25:28superb
25:29recent work
25:29on this
25:31822
25:32of his words
25:33are the first
25:35recorded use
25:36in the English language
25:37of which
25:40479
25:40are still
25:41in common use
25:42now that's only
25:44part of the story
25:45because his
25:46usage
25:47led to
25:48later innovations
25:49I need to give you
25:50a few examples
25:51because it's not
25:52that he invented
25:52the words
25:53but he did invent
25:55words
25:56as we'll see
25:56but he invented
25:57the use
25:58of words
25:59he made
26:01compound nouns
26:02for example
26:03seashore
26:04is his
26:05putting the two
26:05words together
26:06starlight
26:07stumbling block
26:08like-minded
26:10necklace
26:11blindfold
26:12which he used
26:13as an adverb
26:14as well
26:15nouns of action
26:17like betrayer
26:18counterfeater
26:19disposer
26:20men-pleaser
26:21phrases
26:23like breakthrough
26:24set forth
26:25stoop down
26:26turned back
26:26full house
26:27good luck
26:28luck meant
26:29providence
26:30in those days
26:31not what you're
26:32thinking of
26:32bedlam
26:33stiff neck
26:34they were all
26:35his words
26:36his putting
26:38together words
26:39and we use
26:40them constantly
26:40but he did invent
26:41some bible words
26:42like birthright
26:43busy body
26:45cast away
26:46jehovah
26:47mercy seat
26:48passover
26:48sabbath
26:49scapegoat
26:50thanksgiving
26:50in fact even the
26:52word
26:52transubstantiation
26:53is his
26:54he invented
26:56some lovely
26:57words
26:57my favourite
26:58is
26:58mumpsimus
27:00someone who
27:01obstinately
27:02clings to
27:03old ways
27:04so if
27:06someone calls
27:07you a
27:07mumpsimus
27:08you'll know
27:08what you are
27:09his style
27:11was rich
27:12varied
27:14easy for the
27:16ploughboy to
27:16understand
27:17and it read
27:18well aloud
27:19do remember
27:20the bible
27:21old testament
27:22hebrew
27:22new testament
27:23greek
27:23was always
27:24originally intended
27:25to be read
27:26aloud
27:27nobody had a
27:28stack of
27:28hebrew scrolls
27:29in their back
27:30cupboard
27:30nobody in the
27:31early churches
27:32had a lovely
27:33bound volume
27:35of all the
27:35new testament
27:36letters
27:37they went to
27:38the synagogue
27:38or the meeting
27:39house of the
27:40christians to
27:40hear it read
27:43he claimed
27:44that he
27:45had no one
27:46to help
27:47him
27:48no evidence
27:49as they say
27:49that he had
27:50Wycliffe's
27:50bible
27:51and he
27:52didn't follow
27:53Wycliffe in
27:53many areas
27:54anyway
27:56he used
27:57phrases that
27:58you've become
27:58familiar with
27:59things like
28:00powers that be
28:01our law unto
28:02themselves
28:02born the heat
28:03and burden
28:04of the day
28:04take thine
28:05ease
28:05eat drink
28:05and be merry
28:06for him we
28:07live and move
28:07and have our
28:08being
28:08work out your
28:09own salvation
28:10with fear
28:11and trembling
28:12at last
28:13the english
28:14ploughboy could
28:15hear the new
28:16testament in
28:17his native
28:18tongue
28:19he would be
28:20able to
28:20discover for
28:21himself
28:21that nowhere
28:23in the bible
28:23would he find
28:24penance
28:25or purgatory
28:26or payment
28:27for pardons
28:28indulgences
28:29praying to
28:30mary or the
28:31saints and the
28:31adoration of
28:32their bones
28:33and other
28:33relics
28:34confession to
28:35a priest
28:35or a belief
28:36in the immaculate
28:37conception of
28:38mary or the
28:39infallible
28:40authority of
28:40the pope
28:41or the
28:41idea
28:42that the
28:42wine and
28:43bread of
28:43the lord's
28:44supper
28:44miraculously
28:45changes into

28:46blood and

34:521534
34:53the very year
34:55that interestingly
34:56Parliament
34:56passed the
34:57Act of
34:58Supremacy
34:58declaring Henry
35:00VIII
35:00the supreme
35:01head on earth
35:02of the Church
35:03in England
35:04a beautiful
35:05coincidence
35:07Tyndale was
35:08not only a
35:09great scholar
35:09but he was
35:11a humble
35:11Christian
35:12even his
35:13most bitter
35:14enemy
35:14Thomas More
35:15admitted that
35:16Tyndale was
35:17quote
35:17a man of
35:19sober and
35:20honest living
35:20who lived
35:22and preached
35:23holily
35:24Humphrey Monmouth
35:25in whose home
35:26Tyndale stayed
35:27while in London
35:27declared that
35:29Tyndale lived
35:29like a good
35:30priest
35:31he studied
35:32most part
35:33of the day
35:33and of the
35:34night
35:35at his
35:35book
35:36but Monmouth
35:37was careful
35:38not to say
35:39what his
35:39book was
35:40you know
35:43there was
35:44nothing ever
35:44extravagant
35:45about him
35:46said Points
35:46Points
35:48later wrote
35:49that he was
35:49without spot
35:51or blemish
35:52notice that
35:53no rancour
35:54or malice
35:55full of
35:56mercy and
35:56compassion
35:57so that
35:58no man
35:59living was
36:00able to
36:00reprove him
36:01of any
36:01sin or
36:02crime
36:02Tyndale
36:04allowed himself
36:05two days of
36:05break each
36:06week and
36:06he spent
36:07Monday
36:07visiting the
36:08English
36:08exiles to
36:09encourage them
36:09and Saturday
36:10caring for
36:11the poor
36:12in the
36:12city
36:13after his
36:14arrest
36:15Tyndale's
36:15jailer
36:16his daughter
36:17and other
36:18members of
36:18his household
36:19were converted
36:21by quote
36:22the power
36:22of his
36:23doctrine
36:23and the
36:24sincerity
36:25of his
36:25life
36:26many others
36:27confirmed that
36:28if Tyndale
36:29wasn't a good
36:29Christian man
36:30they didn't
36:31know who
36:31they could
36:32trust
36:33but above
36:34his scholarship
36:35he was a
36:36pastor
36:36and an
36:37evangelist
36:38that comes
36:39through again
36:40and again
36:41in his
36:41writings
36:42by 1533
36:44Tyndale
36:44as we say
36:45was staying
36:45at the

37:12and by his
37:13silver tongue

37:15the confidence
37:16of everyone
37:17except
37:18Thomas Points
37:19he was a
37:21despicable

37:31until Thomas
