00:00Hello, welcome along to your latest update from the Met Office.
00:04Some pretty wet and windy weather expected across the south of the country as we go through the overnight period.
00:09All tied into Storm Austin. Here it is approaching as we go through this evening.
00:13Now ahead of Storm Austin, we'll see some strengthening southerly winds, which will bring gusts 50, maybe 60 miles an
00:19hour along some exposed parts of the south coast.
00:21Calm winds in the centre, then a rapid increase in northwesterly winds later tonight and into Friday morning.
00:2760 to 70 mile an hour gusts in West Wales. 70, possibly 80 miles an hour for parts of North
00:32Devon into Cornwall.
00:33Possibly even 85 miles an hour for the Isles of Scilly for a time late tonight into Friday morning.
00:39And then as the low continues to trundle, it's quite brisk northwesterly winds, still gusting 40 to 50 miles an
00:44hour inland through Friday daytime further east across England and Wales.
00:47It's pretty blustery really across the board through the day.
00:50So these are the warnings as they stand this evening on Thursday from the Met Office.
00:55As you can see, this yellow warning here covering the south coast, southwest England, up into south and west Wales.
00:59That comes into force at midnight.
01:00The amber warning here, that comes into force at 1 a.m., expires at 10 a.m.
01:04So it's here late tonight into tomorrow morning, the greatest risk of significant impacts.
01:09And then across parts of North Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia and the southeast, we also have a yellow warning
01:14here.
01:14This is for moderate impacts.
01:16That comes into force at 10 a.m. on Friday morning through until the evening.
01:20Check out the website and app for more information on those different impact levels that these warnings are valid for.
01:26Needless to say, it will be an unsettled evening and night as rain continues to spread north and east.
01:31Some of this really quite lively later on this evening.
01:34This squally cold front coming through, some lively gusts of wind, heavy bursts of rain,
01:38the odd rumble of thunder perhaps, as that trundles its way north and east across southern parts of the UK.
01:43Stuck contrast, though, much quieter conditions across Scotland.
01:46Clear skies for a time in the northeast, lighter winds here.
01:49So some frost, potentially minus three, minus four before the clouds thickens later on.
01:53And the persistent rain we've had for much of Thursday will actually finally clear away from parts of the northern
01:59isles.
01:59So here it should become a little bit drier, bar a few showers later in the night.
02:02So cold in the far north, but elsewhere, typically high single figures, low double figures for your overnight low.
02:09But a pretty unsettled start then to Friday with Storm Austin, the centre of it here, running eastwards, close to
02:14southern England.
02:15So bands of showers and longer spells of rain rotating around that.
02:18Some drier interludes in between, a bit of brightness actually for parts of eastern England for a time.
02:22And all of this rain gradually starts to pull away towards the east as we go through the day,
02:27as the winds start to ease away in the west.
02:30So skies brightening across southwest Wales, southwest England, northern Ireland,
02:33bar a few blustery showers in the afternoon, should see a little bit of brightness and sunshine.
02:37But for much of England, Wales and Scotland, it will be quite a wet Friday afternoon.
02:41And the air cold enough in Scotland for snow down to about 700 metres or so.
02:46So not causing too many impacts for any of the main routes across Scotland in this event.
02:51These are your absolute temperatures come Friday afternoon.
02:54So, you know, high single figures, low double figures, but obviously factor in the wind and rain.
02:57And it's not going to feel particularly pleasant, I don't think, if you're out and about through Friday.
03:01And again, some of this rain in the east could be quite lively come the afternoon,
03:04maybe again with a rumble of thunder.
03:07Now, the worst of the winds, as I say, will be Thursday night into Friday.
03:10But actually, as we go later in the day on Friday, we'll get some really persistent rain developing
03:14across eastern Scotland, southeast Scotland, maybe parts of Northumberland as well.
03:17So the rain really piling in here for quite a few hours through the evening and overnight.
03:22Elsewhere, skies clear, a little ridge of high pressure, so there'll be some quieter conditions.
03:26The wind's easing down, maybe one or two missed patches.
03:29Rain, though, already knocking on the door of Northern Ireland by the end of Friday night
03:33come Saturday morning.
03:34And again, it will be chilly overnight.
03:36We could get close to freezing across parts of Scotland.
03:39Elsewhere, I think typically lows around the mid-single figures for most places as we go into Saturday morning.
03:45But it's that rain that's also a cause for concern with Storm Austin.
03:48Those rainfall totals building up across parts of south and east Scotland through Friday and Friday night.
03:53This is just an idea of how much rain we might see in this part of the world.
03:56So typically 20 to 40 millimetres quite widely.
03:59But we could see, particularly in southeast Scotland, maybe into Northumberland, potential here for 60 to 80 millimetres.
04:05So there is a yellow warning for rain because we may see some surface water and river flooding impacts into
04:10the weekend.
04:10A brief respite then.
04:12But here comes our next named system, Storm Bulow, quickly coming in off the Atlantic,
04:16bringing widespread rain as we go into Saturday.
04:19And then it's the really tightly packed isobars on the south side of this low that will bring us some
04:23very strong winds.
04:24But this time northern parts of the UK later Saturday and into Sunday.
04:28So a closer look at Saturday.
04:29Well, a quieter start in the east, some early hazy sunshine.
04:32Cloud thickening though through the day.
04:34Already the rain in the west becoming fairly persistent.
04:36The wind's picking up with this as well.
04:39So turning increasingly wet and windy from west to east as we go through Saturday.
04:42It could take till perhaps the early part of the afternoon to get to the far east of England.
04:47And then some heavy rain and gusty winds working its way eastwards.
04:50Perhaps something a bit brighter later for western Scotland and Northern Ireland.
04:53But here there'll be some blustery showers rattling in from the west as well.
04:57So it's going to feel quite cool, I think, through the course of Saturday.
05:00And as I say, those winds will start picking up a little bit later on.
05:03Again, temperatures on the thermometer.
05:04We're looking at 12 to 15 degrees, maybe 16 in the southwest.
05:07But it's not going to feel that warm given the wind and rain.
05:11The winds will, though, pick up even further Saturday night and into Sunday.
05:16Again, weather warnings are in force for that.
05:18You can find more information on those on the Met Office web and app.
