00:00Now we go live to Mark Grandy, who apparently has a question.
00:02I want to ask you guys really quick, like Sam Darnold was good last year.
00:08They won a Super Bowl with Sam Darnold as their quarterback.
00:10They sure did.
00:10But he's still susceptible if you can get pressure on him.
00:13And the reverse, to a certain degree, I suppose is true.
00:17But Brock has been amazing versus pressure and the blitz.
00:20And that's what the Seahawks front seven is going to do.
00:22They're going to get pressure on Brock Pruitt.
00:24That's a given.
00:25But Brock is very good against that.
00:26But I think this game might come down to if Raheem Morris can scheme up pressure against Sam Darnold.
00:31Because I think the Niners have a major advantage at the quarterback spot in this game.
00:35I love Sam, and he was Brock's backup.
00:37He credits Brock for being the guy that helped teach him how to play quarterback.
00:41You know what's funny?
00:42If you can get pressure on him, I think the Niners win this game.
00:45Because you're just going to take their offense out of the game.
00:48Here's where I draw confidence in this football game.
00:50And I think it's kind of from what Grandy's talking about right now.
00:53And, again, I've said this now a few times from yesterday to today.
00:57For obvious reasons, our focus when we look at this game, whether you're a fan or whether you're trying to
01:03assess who's going to win or whatever,
01:05we think about the Niner offense against the Seattle defense.
01:08We went into the offseason kind of, you know, bummed out about that side of the ball.
01:15Plus, it's Kyle and his offense against Mike and his defense.
01:18So that's what we focus on.
01:20We are completely ignoring the other side of the ball.
01:22And I think that's a big, big deal to Grandy's point.
01:26And I think the Niner defense, if Raheem can scheme up pressure, if Mikel Williams can have an impact,
01:32if these defensive ends who are now building, they got good stuff from Matthew Judon,
01:37he might come up from the practice squad.
01:39We'll see.
01:40Oso Odigizu is now on this team.
01:41If that group can mess around and force Sam into a mistake or two, and those linebackers can also do
01:49all of their normal work and put hats on or cause a fumble and all of those things that'll help
01:56out the defensive backfield,
01:57even though they're now missing Marquis Siegel.
01:59And I think that this defense can keep Seattle to a very manageable number in this game.
02:05And it's where I draw confidence.
02:08I don't think Brock is going to shred Seattle.
02:10I don't think that exists.
02:12I've already said, I think the sack thing probably ends this week.
02:16I think even the run without turnovers might end for Brock Purdy this week.
02:21There might be a pick in there.
02:22But if they can avoid making it happen a lot, they do have the goods, I believe, to move the
02:30ball a little bit better than Seattle does in this matchup.
02:33That's my take.
02:34I just hope they can move the ball better than they have in the previous matchups.
02:38And last year was not this year.
02:40We've been over that time and time again.
02:41But as far as this matchup goes, the offense against the Seattle D, the Seattle defense is largely what it
02:48was last year.
02:49The Niner offense, in my opinion, is better.
02:52The offensive line is better.
02:53The skill guys are better.
02:54George Kittle's actually playing.
02:56You don't have use check, which will be an interesting wrinkle for Kyle to figure out how to scheme around
03:01that.
03:01I'm sure he spent all week putting stuff in that's going to make that work and stuff.
03:05And if you look at just the defensive part of it, Seattle's a top seven team in pressures, top seven
03:12in sacks, in quarterback hits, and the rest of it.
03:15So you did that against Denver, which Denver is good but not as good in terms of pressures and hits
03:21and sacks.
03:22This is going to be another level up.
03:24And so I'm kind of with you.
03:26Like if I said if the over and under was two and a half sacks for Brock Purdy, that's a
03:31little bit of a challenging number.
03:33But you'd like to go in the under.
03:35I'd like to take the under on that, yeah.
03:37But it seems like, and I know last year when they faced Seattle, I think in the second to last
03:42game they played Seattle, he got sacked three times.
03:44And the playoff game might have been more because they just were turning it over constantly.
03:49So the big key for me is avoiding getting behind Seattle and making them able to just come after you
03:56in the past.
03:57Sure.
03:57And that's, I mean, that's kind of a Kyle Shanahan staple anyway.
04:00All right.
04:01Let's go to the phones.
04:02It's 888-957-9570.
04:04We're excited to talk this game out with all of you throughout this drive home for each and every one
04:09of you or whatever it is that you're doing this afternoon.
04:12Dave in Fresno.
04:13Hey, Dave, thank you for calling.
04:14What's up?
04:16Hey, guys.
04:17Happy Friday.
04:18Thanks for having me on.
04:19Thanks, man.
04:20Yeah, you know, going into the weekend and it's a big game.
04:24All I ask, whatever happens in particular with Brock Purdy, I think as Niner fans, we need to be prepared
04:33for whatever the talk will be after the game, whether he plays good or bad.
04:37And if it's bad, we got to be able to accept whatever criticism comes his way.
04:41Because I know with Brock Purdy and Niner fans, it's a triggering argument or discussion for a lot of Niner
04:48fans.
04:49And, you know, if he plays bad, doesn't mean, doesn't throw away all his good he's done this year.
04:54It doesn't mean he's a bad quarterback.
04:56You know, all the quarterbacks get criticism.
04:58I feel like the only one who probably doesn't, you know, is above criticism is probably Mahomes.
05:03But outside of that, Josh gets criticism.
05:06Lamar will get criticism.
05:07It won't be new to Brock if, say, he throws a three-pick game and he looks pretty bad.
05:14He's just got to be able to accept the criticism.
05:17But I'm not predicting he's going to play bad.
05:18I'm just saying, you know, let's be mature.
05:21Let's be prepared.
05:22Because there's been a lot of iTunes just so broad going around, which is cool.
05:25You know, he's playing great.
05:27He's playing great.
05:28Hopefully he keeps it up.
05:30But let's not get too attached to how he looks.
05:33Let's just keep our eye on the prize at the team game.
05:36You know, he's a big part of it.
05:39I think we're, you know, we go out pretty much as far as he takes us.
05:42And I believe in him.
05:44Each one, he can do it.
05:45But, again, when the discussion around Brock comes, we've got to be able to accept the good and the bad
05:51and have an adult real conversation on what we see in the field and leave our feelings aside.
05:57Because I feel like there's a lot of, you know, personal agendas going around, especially with Brock.
06:04You know, it's like, come on, man.
06:05Like, you can root for your team.
06:07You can root for players.
06:08But let's just talk about what we see on the field and report, you know, respectively.
06:14And, you know, that's all I'm saying, man.
06:17So, you know, it's going to be a good game.
06:20And hopefully we can pull it off.
06:23But, again, it's not going to define the whole season.
06:26It's not going to define Brock.
06:27It's not going to define Kyle.
06:28We lose.
06:29So, let's just have a real conversation, win or lose, and not, you know, not take things too personal.
06:37And I don't think there's no doubt that we will.
06:38Dave, I totally hear what you're saying.
06:40Appreciate the call.
06:41I agree with it.
06:42But what you said there at the end for me is really the key, which is I am so excited
06:49that Brock Purdy has arrived at a spot
06:52where we don't need to freak out if he does have a bad game.
06:57Josh Allen has had a bad game.
06:59Josh Allen turned the ball over three times against the Chargers, threw a big pick, you know, against the Patriots.
07:08And the Patriots won the football game last week against the Bills.
07:12What excites me is that Brock Purdy has arrived at a spot where if he has a bad game or
07:18a bad decision or a bad throw or whatever,
07:20you can just say that.
07:22And it's like, but then you move on.
07:24For so many years now, it would be one bad game or a bad series or a bad fourth quarter
07:31or maybe even just a bad couple of games or whatever.
07:34I don't think he's had a ton of them.
07:36But when the questions would come up, it would immediately transfer to do we need a different quarterback?
07:42Even as recently as last year, raise your hand if you were someone who wanted Mac Jones to stay in
07:49so we could, quote, ride the hot hand.
07:52There were a lot of you.
07:54A lot of people, yeah.
07:54And that's okay, but, you know, you were wrong, and that's fine.
07:59Like, we're all wrong sometimes, but what I'm saying here is that's now over.
08:04So if Brock does struggle against Mike McDonald's defense and the Niners do lose, sure.
08:10Let's, like, I'm with Dave.
08:13We could have a conversation about it, but it doesn't define Brock.
08:18It doesn't define Kyle.
08:20I mean, if they lose 50 to nothing, okay, and he throws five picks, let's have a conversation.
08:25But I think we're past that, and I'm excited about that to now just freely say, because it's okay.
08:33Like, dudes have bad games.
08:35They have bad throws.
08:36They have bad quarters.
08:37They have, you know, nemesis teams out there.
08:40It happens, and I have no doubt that it will happen to Brock in his career periodically.
08:46And as we mentioned earlier in the week, if Brock goes 0 for 34 with two interceptions, he will qualify
08:53for the all-time quarterback rating list, and he will be number one.
08:56So if he has a nightmare game, and I would imagine if he is 0 for 34 with two picks
09:02and you get the ball back, you're probably losing, and you might turn to Mac Jones at that point and
09:06just give the kid a break.
09:08Might get benched, yeah.
09:09Right, but even getting benched, he still would be the all-time leader in quarterback rating.
09:13So even a disastrous game, let's just put it out there, it's a disaster.
09:19He goes 17 for 39 with four picks, and they lose by four touchdowns.
09:24You're still 4-1, and you're still number one all-time quarterback rating, and you're not going to have any
09:30quarterback controversy.
09:31It's just a bad day.
09:33Yep.
09:33And it happens against really good defenses, and that's what Seattle is.
09:37I mean, I can remember Josh Allen going into Houston last year.
09:40I think it was on a Thursday night, and he got completely stifled, totally stifled by that Texans defense that
09:46was playing so well last year.
09:49Same defense that stifled Mac Jones and the 49ers, actually, a few weeks earlier.
09:53So, look, yeah, it happens.
09:54That's kind of one of the things that's my takeaway from what we've seen this year is we don't have
09:58to do that anymore.
10:00We don't have to lose our minds if there's a bad game or a bad throw or a bad quarter
10:05or a bad matchup.
10:06Like, it happens to every NFL team.
10:08I imagine, like, Brock and Kyle are not immune to that.
10:12I understand the history of this one, so you really want to shake free of it.
10:16But the conversation can just be like you had a bad game or you had a bad throw or you
10:21wish you hadn't done that or whatever.
10:23But it doesn't.
10:24We don't have to go immediately broad to have this large-ranging conversation about the quarterback position with the Niners.
10:31That's obviously been very, very solidified.
