00:00One more underappreciation thing here in the Bay.
00:02And it is only from one angle that I bring up Kyle Shanahan
00:06because I think he and Brock Purdy are also part of this conversation
00:11because I do think they have been on that list.
00:14They're not right now.
00:15They are finally getting their due, especially Brock Purdy this year
00:20and I think Kyle Shanahan last year.
00:22But I was just looking at this.
00:24FanDuel's got their AP Coach of the Year odds that just got released.
00:28And I understand it because we're not new.
00:31It always goes this way.
00:33The point I want to make is it shouldn't.
00:34Okay, so right now I bet you can guess who the favorite right now is
00:39for NFL Coach of the Year.
00:42I bet if you just think about it, you can nail it confidently.
00:46It's maybe Kubiak with the Raiders?
00:49100%.
00:50It is Clint Kubiak of the Los Nyangis Raiders.
00:56Los Nyangis.
00:57Yeah, he is.
00:58Las Vegas.
00:59He is clearly.
01:00Doesn't get old.
01:01The favorite.
01:03Followed by Jesse Minter.
01:05Followed by Ben Johnson and Kellen Moore.
01:09Who's one and two.
01:12Hold that.
01:13Followed by Kevin O'Connell.
01:16Followed by John Harbaugh.
01:19Harbaugh.
01:20Okay.
01:22I'm starting to get annoyed by how we do Coach of the Year because it's got the
01:28wrong name.
01:29I know this name is not as quick or fun, but instead of Coach of the Year,
01:35we got to do something like Coach Who Surprised Us the Most.
01:41It's not Coach of the Year.
01:42It's not catchy, but I'm open to suggestions, but we got to call it something else.
01:50That's all you're doing.
01:52You're simply giving an award to somebody who ended up being good who you thought was going
01:58to suck.
01:59That's it.
02:00But, meanwhile, Shanahan is out here with, do we have him reading his list of wounded
02:08today?
02:10Possibly.
02:10Where is it?
02:11Which one is it?
02:12Oh, here we go.
02:14James Thompson, ankle, Bosa, calf, Mike Evans, ribs, Greenlock, quad, Trent Williams, neck,
02:20Keon White, hamstring, Christian McCaffrey, vet day, Hodge, knee, and then limited will be
02:26height with hand and Mike Kell with knee.
02:28Okay, 3-0, 33 points a game.
02:31And what did we do last year?
02:33Give me a break.
02:34Give me, and it's fine, because I know it's not the way the award works.
02:38Just change the name.
02:40Change the name.
02:41Well, they never will.
02:41Yeah, I know.
02:42Much like they will never change the most valuable player to, oh, you're the best.
02:46And the winner of the you're the best award goes to?
02:49Well.
02:50Because most valuable depends on, like, what team and who else you had around you.
02:54Well, I do think your team needs to be good.
02:56That should be part of it.
02:57That's why I want to know, why the hell is Kellen Moore ahead of Kyle Shanahan?
03:01You're one and two in a terrible division.
03:04Tied for first.
03:05If the playoffs start today.
03:06But you know this.
03:08It's because the Saints are like, oh, they don't look terrible.
03:14So, yeah, let's make him coach of the year.
03:17It's fine.
03:18It's fine.
03:19I know it's never going to change.
03:20The same way neither are gas prices, but I can still be annoyed by it.
03:23That's all I'm getting at.
03:25I think it's silly.
03:26They need to change the whole way that they look at it.
03:30Because coach of the year ignores people who are good to begin with, do an awesome job, handle adversity, keep
03:40on trucking, next man up, blah, blah, blah.
03:43It totally does not take that stuff into account.
03:46Kyle Shanahan not being coach of the year last year, laughable.
03:50Laughable now that we're seeing what the New England Patriots became.
03:54The New England Patriots, you've pointed this out a bunch of times.
03:57I think there were multiple candidates that were better than Mike Vrabel last year.
04:01But they played a joke of a schedule, and then he took the whole organization through complete embarrassment through the
04:10offseason.
04:10That was not the coach of the year.
04:13Not even close.
04:15And I know they voted for it before Diana Rossini.
04:18But still, Mike McDonald was a better candidate last year.
04:23Ben Johnson was a better candidate last year.
04:25And you damn well better believe 12-5 with none of his good players.
04:30Kyle Shanahan was a better candidate last year.
04:33He's never won, and he has been second one time only.
04:37And if you look at the award, four of the last seven award winners were then fired by their team,
04:43including Harbaugh, John Harbaugh, 2019.
04:48Stefanski won two with Cleveland, and he got fired.
04:52Brian Dable, they went 9-7-1 with the Giants in 2022, and he was coach of the year.
04:58Hit me with Stefanski.
04:59This is going to prove my point.
05:01Where did he coach?
05:02Cleveland.
05:03Okay.
05:04They win 11-5 in 2020.
05:06But we're handing coach of the year out to a person who coaches the complete joke of the league.
05:15And has been the joke of the league for multiple decades.
05:19But because we perked up for one year and we were kind of good-ish, you win coach of the
05:25year.
05:26I'm sorry.
05:26Twice.
05:27That's lame.
05:27Well, I mean.
05:28That's totally lame.
05:29To get Cleveland to 11-5 in that year is better than Shanahan getting the Niners to 12-5 last
05:36year.
05:36I disagree.
05:37Because Cleveland stinks.
05:38But I disagree.
05:39But the nature of the award is beyond subjective.
05:43Like, last year, you go ahead and you give it to, you know, New England.
05:47They go 14-3.
05:48It's like, yeah, great year.
05:50Nobody saw that coming.
05:51So Vrabel wins his second in five years.
05:55And put aside the Rossini controversy.
05:56But, yeah, they had a nice year.
05:58He had a good year.
06:00Their schedule was a joke.
06:01And you had no injury.
06:02So you could look at anything.
06:04And you could judge coach of the year however you want to go ahead and judge it.
06:08Like, the year before that, Kevin O'Connell gets it at 14-3 with Sam Darnold at quarterback.
06:13Okay.
06:13I get that.
06:14Like, you had a retread at quarterback and you went 14-3 and you're Minnesota.
06:19That's deserving.
06:21I get that.
06:22No, no, no.
06:22I'm not saying that only, like, there are lots of people who are great candidates.
06:27There are lots of people who are great candidates.
06:28I want the league to admit, or I guess it's actually whoever votes on this, that they're
06:34not all starting from the same starting block.
06:37Like, this is a race that's run where certain people are a mile ahead of you when it starts.
06:43Tell them more?
06:44What are we doing?
06:46Has anybody had a winning record in that division in three years?
06:50Like, why would we even go there?
06:53The bar is so low.
06:55Well, we've had coach of the year winners who were sub-500.
07:00Jimmy Johnson, 1990, they went 7-9.
07:03That doesn't make any sense to me.
07:05That just doesn't make any sense to me.
07:07But, again, it's to my point.
07:09That's how they judge the award.
07:11It's just like, if we think you're going to totally suck and you don't, then you get
07:16coach of the year.
07:17The AFC or the NFC South has three wins, collectively.
07:21The entire division has the same number of wins as the 49ers.
07:24Helen Moore has a third of those.
07:26So, I don't know what your point is.
07:28Like, I don't know why you're all stuck on that.
07:32That's good.
07:32They're building a bully down there in the Bayou.
07:35Bayou bully.
07:35They sure are.
07:37You're listening to 95.7 The Game.

07:42Home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries.
07:44Always live on the free Odyssey app.
07:46Coming live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
07:47Hi, Marlon on the 24.
07:49What you doing?
07:52Well, I'm stuck in traffic, unfortunately.
07:54But, what, you guys just started talking?
07:56Yeah, it's whatever.
07:57Yeah, we'll get you there, Marlon.
07:59We'll get you there.
08:01Yeah, it's all good.
08:02But, what you guys were talking about kind of reminded me of a conversation that
08:08Shasky and Spadoni were having, I think, with Dave Fleming a day or two ago.
08:12And, it had something to do, kind of, it's different, it's not coach of the year, but
08:16it had to do with, like, the MVP.
08:18And, I think it was MVP in Major League Baseball, right?
08:22And, I think, it was really kind of the Mike Trout example.
08:26Like, Mike Trout was just that person for so many years.
08:30And, he'd win the MVP.
08:31But, the team wouldn't make the playoffs.
08:33And, I think, just hearing you guys talk about coach of the year, it's like, I agree with
08:38you, Mark, that maybe it isn't coach of the year.
08:42And, maybe the name should change.
08:44I'm sure it'll stick as coach of the year.
08:46Right.
08:48But, I think you're right.
08:49Like, you know, some of it is, like, what are you doing with, you know, you're judging
08:56Mike, excuse me, Kyle Shanahan unfairly to say, hey, he's dealing with all of these injuries.
09:01And, he made it to 12-5.
09:04But, this guy, you know, with Cleveland, like, his team stinks.
09:08And, he made it to 11-5.
09:09So, it almost is like not giving Kyle enough credit.
09:14I'll liken it to a food example.
09:16It's like when you watch that show, Chopped, on the Food Network.
09:20When you open up that basket and you get all these weird ingredients, you've got to make
09:24something happen, whether you like it or not.
09:27And, just to kind of close out on this thought with, like, New England.
09:31And, yeah, I mean, Brayville got that award.
09:34But, it took a snowstorm in Denver for them to make the Super Bowl.
09:38And, I probably wouldn't have given it to them if I had a vote.
09:41So, yeah, those are just some random thoughts.
09:43But, yeah, keep up the good conversation.
09:45I appreciate it.
09:46Hey, Marlon, thank you.
09:48Get home safe.
09:49Yeah, that's all.
09:50Like, I'm not even bothered by it.
09:52But, just call it Surprise of the Year.
09:54That's all it is.
09:55We're just doing Surprise of the Year.
09:57The Raiders are 3-0.
09:59Surprise!
10:01So, you win, Clint.
10:02And, I get that.
10:03I get that.
10:04You're the Raiders.
10:05If the Raiders go to the playoffs this year, good Lord.
10:08That award's done.
10:09Probably.
10:10Done.
10:10And, you look at, like, Surprise of the Year, and it's impossible to really look at it from
10:15the outside and say, yep, that was coaching.
10:17Like, last year, Kyle Shanahan goes without his quarterback for half the year, and the
10:22backup plays well enough to go 5-3.
10:25Is that coaching, or is it not coaching?
10:27Like, you coaching?
10:28To me, that was coaching.
10:30And, you've got a defense that didn't have Bosa and didn't have Warner for a while, and
10:34yet, it was bend but don't break.
10:35And, so, we can look at every situation, which they don't actually do, they really look at
10:41what you're talking about, which is, man, Raiders, all right, Vikings, we didn't expect
10:45you to be this good, so, coach of the year, right?
10:48Meanwhile, Shanahan is just plodding along with the best team in football at 3-0, and
10:52that's not coaching?
10:53Yeah, you can't have what are perceived to be too many great players.
10:58Joe Brady has walked into a brand new situation and won his first three games, and there's going
11:04to be no mention of him whatsoever.
11:06He has Josh Allen.
11:07It's like you're ineligible for the award.
11:10Like, Andy Reid, you're ineligible.
11:13How about Andy Reid?
11:14The Kansas City Chiefs went 6-11 last year, and their quarterback tore his ACL and wasn't
11:19supposed to start the year, and the 3-0, and they're scoring tons of points.
11:23But Andy Reid is not eligible.
11:26Kyle Shanahan is not eligible.
11:27Joe Brady is not eligible.
11:30Sean McVay gets the reverse coach of the year award so far.
11:33Because he's supposed to, he is not eligible for coach of the year and not winning football
11:38games.
11:39And flying people halfway across the world two minutes before kick.
11:44Like, he gets whatever the opposite of coach of the year is so far.
11:48And that's the one that you're eligible for when you're supposed to be really good.
11:52But you're not even eligible for coach of the year.
11:54And Jim Harbaugh would be on that same list as far as, and Matt LeFleur would be on the list
12:00as well, of like, oh God, are you worse than we thought?
12:04Is it early?
12:05Or are you guys really kind of a little bit of a mess?
12:08And so Harbaugh's got a trip to Seattle to try to avoid going to 0-4?
12:14Like, I understand the schedule's been rugged, but the Chargers have been flat bad throughout
12:19three games.
12:20Terrible.
12:21Awful.
12:22You can't win.
12:23Felocious.
12:25If you get five turnovers, you win.
12:27It's like a rule.
12:29Five turnovers.
12:31It's almost impossible not to.
12:33And you didn't even cover.
12:34Right?
12:35That's my favorite part of that game.
12:38You didn't even cover, dog.
12:40Could you just cover?
12:41You have five turnovers.
12:43You have to cover, Jim.
12:46They are one of six teams to be 0-3 against the spread so far this year.
12:52Wow.
12:53Wow.
12:53And they are the reason that every survivor pool is missing more than 50% of its people.
12:58They're the number one.
12:59They're the leaders in the clubhouse for that little gag.
13:02The week one?
13:03The week one gag job.
13:04Debacle?
13:04Yeah.
13:05Against the Arizona Cardinals.
13:06Against the Arizona Cardinals.
13:07Against the Arizona Cardinals.
