Willard and Dibs react to Brock Purdy not making the list of top-10 quarterbacks as ranked by NFL coaches, executives, and scouts.
Transcript
00:00I try to tell you that we're always going to be here.
00:03We'll always be here.
00:05We will always be here?
00:06Always.
00:07Me and you?
00:09Well, hopefully that goes as long as possible.
00:11But no, that's not what I mean.
00:13I mean the Sports Collective San Francisco fan base
00:16will always be here debating Brock Purdy.
00:23Right, and it's got to be a weird spot for you
00:26as the president of Brockistan.
00:27No, it's a great spot.
00:28And for those of you who don't know,
00:30Mark is the president of Brockistan.
00:31No one loves Brock Purdy more than my partner.
00:34We're meeting again on Thursday, actually.
00:36I'm looking forward to that.
00:38Reconvening.
00:38If anybody wants to come,
00:40we'll make sure there are extra chairs.
00:41But it's interesting because the fan base
00:44is still debating the merits of Brock Purdy.
00:47And yet, as the president of Brockistan,
00:49you don't always go out there and campaign for Brock.
00:53But it's got to be a little odd for you
00:55that there still is question about whether or not he's that good.
00:59No, it's great.
01:00This is why Brockistan still gets as many donations as it does
01:03because there's still controversy.
01:04If it was just something that was easy
01:06and we could just plop him into the number five spot on the board,
01:11then nobody would feel emotionally activated by it.
01:14The reason that this is interesting is not because it's just yet another
01:20quarterback ranking board yawn.
01:25Especially if it's by that whack-a-doodle with the ringer.
01:29Steven Ruiz?
01:31Quarterback savant.
01:32Yawn.
01:34Okay.
01:34Brock Purdy, number 23, and then you move up to number 22.
01:37All right, Steven.
01:38Thanks for the engagement farming.
01:41The reason this is interesting is it an aggregate of votes
01:49that come from actual NFL people.
01:53This is a collection put together by votes from coaches, scouts, and executives.
02:04And here are the top 10.
02:07We will go from 1 to 10 because the surprises at the top are not really there.
02:13It's at the bottom that I think obviously is the conversation.
02:17I bet you could do number one and two without even looking at it.
02:21I got the board right here in front of me.
02:23I mean, it would probably be Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes?
02:27Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
02:29Okay.
02:30They are number one and number two.
02:33Number three, Rams quarterback, Matthew Stafford.
02:37Number four, Bengals, Joe Burrow.
02:41Number five, Lamar Jackson.
02:44All right, here's where it gets interesting.
02:47And I mean real interesting and real fast.
02:50In fact, you should say something when you disagree.
02:56Say something when you disagree.
02:58Okay.
02:58Okay, number one, Josh Allen.
02:59Number two, Patrick Mahomes.
03:01Number three, Matthew Stafford.
03:02Number four, Joe Burrow.
03:04Number five, Lamar Jackson.
03:06Number six, Dak Prescott.
03:09Oh, really?
03:11Number six.
03:12Number six, Dak Prescott.
03:15Something.
03:17You'd ask me to say something if I disagree.
03:20I sure did.
03:20And I just said something.
03:22Feel like that's a little bit hot.
03:24Number six, ahead of Justin Herbert and, you know, such young stars as Drake May.
03:31And I don't know.
03:32So something.
03:33I said something.
03:34Okay.
03:36Let's go through the list and then we can pick it apart number by number.
03:40Number seven, Justin Herbert.
03:44Okay.
03:45It feels low, but yeah.
03:47I already said something.
03:48I think that he would be ahead of Dak for me.
03:51Okay.
03:52Number eight, Drake May.
03:58Number nine, your boy, Jared Goff.
04:04Hang in there, big guy.
04:06There'll be brighter days ahead.
04:07Pretty bright.
04:08He's number nine quarterback in the NFL.
04:09Not bad.
04:10Not bad.
04:11Okay.
04:11Anything?
04:12No.
04:13I mean, yeah.
04:14All right.
04:15And then rounding out the top ten.
04:19Actually, it'd be fun with all the quarterbacks on the board.
04:21Who do you think got it?
04:22Who do you think came in 10th place on the list?
04:26Well, the whole bit has been set up for the president of Brockistan to rail against this,
04:31so I don't think it's Brock Purdy.
04:32No, you know it's not Brock Purdy.
04:33It's either Jordan Love or Trevor Lawrence.
04:36And, man, I love Trevor Lawrence.
04:38So I'm going to say Trevor Lawrence is at number ten.
04:41It is neither of your candidates.
04:43Oh.
04:44Oh.
04:45It is not Jordan Love nor Trevor Lawrence.
04:48Both of them ended up with Brock Purdy on the honorable mention list.
04:52Okay.
04:54It's Caleb Williams.
04:56All right.
04:57Chicago Bears.
04:58I would say that there are more people who like him more than I do.
05:04I think that Caleb Williams had a good year last year.
05:07I still would like to see it another time before I'm willing to elevate him to that level.
05:12But there's a lot of buzz about Caleb Williams going into this year.
05:16All right.
05:16So and then the list of players who somebody could at least raise a hand about and be upset
05:25are the guys you just Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence, Brock Purdy, probably Baker Mayfield.
05:34Who else could raise a stink?
05:36Jalen Hurts for sure.
05:38Oh, no doubt.
05:39Yeah.
05:40Jaden Daniels, even though, I mean, it's early in his career and he's coming off of a frustrating year.
05:46But Drake May made it.
05:48Yeah.
05:48After one year.
05:50Jaden is maybe hiding behind his mom, depending on who you ask.
05:55That's what Brendan Ayuk said.
05:56Got it.
05:57As boy.
06:00Being a little cat.
06:02I don't know anything anybody else would have much of a Bo Nix.
06:07Little ass boy.
06:08CJ Stroud.
06:09You know what I mean?
06:10Yeah.
06:11So that's probably the back half.
06:14So, I mean, Sam Donald won a Super Bowl.
06:18Right.
06:19And he's nowhere to be found.
06:21Yeah.
06:21Still, you know, not getting that same level of a mention.
06:25And, you know, Kyler Murray's got a new team and you didn't hear his name.
06:29Yeah.
06:29Got dumped.
06:30I think, is Aaron Rodgers still a quarterback?
06:32He is.
06:33Is that still a thing?
06:34I'm told.
06:35Okay.
06:35Apparently.
06:36Right.
06:37Yeah.
06:37I mean.
06:38But I think that's the deal, right?
06:39That sounds like about the deal.
06:42Two things are funny about this because this turned into a big Twitter debate.
06:48And I saw two sides that wanted to kind of put up their dukes.
06:55And one side was like, look at this.
06:59So many Niner fans want to tell the world about how good Brock Purdy is.
07:05But now we've got to vote from the actual people.
07:09The scouts, the execs, and the coaches, and the players.
07:17And they have all put this together.
07:19And Brock did not make the top 10.
07:23I can tell you even previewed this a moment ago by saying, boy, I'm just gussing it all up to
07:30really take my shot.
07:33If you tell me that Brock Purdy is your number 11 quarterback, I'm not really mad at that.
07:39Yeah.
07:40I'm not really mad at that.
07:41But in the very next breath, I think that it is incredibly easy for me to make a case as
07:50to why you would rather have Brock Purdy than Dak Prescott.
07:54Why you'd rather have Brock Purdy than Jared Goff.
07:57And maybe you'd rather have Caleb Williams than Brock Purdy.
08:00But that is, at minimum, still TBD.
08:04I think the Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels thing is funny to me.
08:08Both of them, they were 1-2 in the draft.
08:10They've both played two seasons.
08:12Both of them had one good year and one bad year.
08:14And Caleb Williams is the bee's knees.
08:17And Jaden is forgotten.
08:18And go back to C.J. Stroud, who I think was the predecessor to both of them in that same
08:23vein, which is good season, playoff QB, and then not a great season.
08:27And so now his stock is suddenly in the crapper because, you know, you can't always be amazing every year.
08:34Although Brock Purdy, as we mentioned earlier this offseason, he is, I think, 100 pass attempts away from being the
08:42number one all-time rated quarterback.
08:44Say that again.
08:46Once he qualifies, I think it's 100 pass attempts.
08:49Something like that.
08:49Roughly.
08:49Roughly.
08:50If he doesn't absolutely fall apart, he will be the top quarterback rated passer in the history of the game.
08:56In the history of the game.
08:57Once he qualifies.
08:59Right.
08:59Assuming he doesn't throw seven interceptions in his first 100 passes.
09:02And apparently Kyle Shanahan is that good.
09:04Is that good?
09:05Well, and that's where...
09:06Is that good that he can just create the highest rated passer of all time?
09:10And I just was glancing at Stephen Ruiz's rankings, the aforementioned...
09:14Uh-huh.
09:15Guy from the ringer.
09:16He did it in February.
09:17And his latest had Brock Purdy at number 16, which I felt was a little bit low.
09:22But as we go through all of these different quarterback ratings, I love Mike Sando and his QB tiers.
09:29This list is, I think, well-sourced and Stephen Ruiz is whatever.
09:33But for me, the real ranking is the play caller and the quarterback.
09:38It's the combination of the two.
09:40And I think about Shanahan and Brock Purdy.
09:44What other quarterback, play caller, coach combo would you put above them?
09:49Shanahan!
09:50Exactly.
09:51The future!
09:52For me, there's not more than three, even four feels like a stretch to me, tandems that you would take
09:59ahead of Shanahan and Brock Purdy.
10:01Um, I agree with you.
10:04By the way, Jaden Daniels and Sam Darnold also made this honorable mention list.
10:09The full honorable mention list was Jalen Hurts, Trevor Lawrence, Baker Mayfield, Brock Purdy, Jordan Love, Jaden Daniels, Sam Darnold.
10:17So, in effect, if you're going to do the top ten, and then you've got one, two, three, four, five,
10:23six, seven more that are in the honorable mention.
10:26Those are your best 17 quarterbacks, according to coaches, scouts, and executives.
10:32And then three other players just received any votes at all to round out the top 20.
10:37They were not honorable mention, but they did receive at least one vote.
10:41Bo Nix, CJ Stroud, and Daniel Jones.
10:44Yeah, okay.
10:45Okay, who was off to a really good start with the Colts last year before getting hurt.
10:49All right, so, so, that's, that's your list.
10:52Um, I saw this point get brought up, actually, by Sterling Bennett.
10:57I thought this was an interesting way to react to this.
11:00So, wait a minute.
11:01Coaches, execs, and scouts.
11:04You mean the same people who draft players.
11:10The same people who draft players have downgraded Brock Purdy.
11:16Huh.
11:17Not the first time.
11:19Right.
11:20They, the majority of those teams passed on him at least seven times.
11:25All of those teams passed on him multiple times.
11:27I thought you were, you know, the Rams and you had no picks because you blanked them picks.
11:30But I wonder if you go through that list, how many of those top 10 quarterbacks were all first round
11:36picks?
11:36And, you know, Allen, yes.
11:38Mahomes.
11:39And Lamar, I think it was at the end of the first round.
11:42And the first round.
11:42Allen, Mahomes, Stafford, Burrow.
11:45Hell, most of these guys are number one overall, practically.
11:48Lamar.
11:49Doc was not a first rounder.
11:51I think he was a third rounder.
11:53Herbert, first rounder.
11:55Drake May, first rounder.
11:56Jared Goff, obviously first rounder.
11:58Caleb Williams, number one overall.
12:00Yeah, and so.
12:00Only one.
12:01I do think that now that you mention it, what Sterling Bennett, friend of the program,
12:05guy who does a great job with the Niners overtime show with Grandy,
12:09it feels a little bit like a confirmation bias where these scouts and the execs,
12:14they're the ones who make these picks.
12:16And they all collectively thought that these quarterbacks were the bee's knees.
12:20And so you're going to go ahead and lean on your bias and put them ahead of
12:24somebody who is Mr. Irrelevant.
12:25Even if I bring in the honorable mention,
12:28there's only two more quarterbacks that get paired with Dak Prescott as non-first
12:35rounders.
12:35And that's Brock Purdy and Jalen Hurts.
12:37Right.
12:38Everybody, even the honorable mention, Sam Darnold, Jaden Daniels, Jordan Love,
12:43Baker Mayfield, Trevor Lawrence.
12:45Two of them were number one overall.
12:48Exactly.
12:48So of the list of all the people that you were mentioning, honorable mention in the
12:52top 10, I think about half of them were number one overall.
12:56And the other half of the half or a quarter of them were top 10 picks or top half of
13:03the
13:03first round as well.
13:04Uh, Jalen Hurts, a Superbowl champion, you know, Sam Darnold, a Superbowl champion.
13:12Um, and then the top 10 list, how many Superbowl champions do we have on here?
13:17Basically we've got, um, bones and Stafford.
13:21Yep.
13:22That's it.
13:23Right.
13:24That's it.
13:26So, but if you go back to when Stafford started quarterbacking, which is now what?
13:3116 years, like between Stafford who got the one and Mahomes who has the three, you've got
13:37a handful of Brady's in there and not a lot of other quarterbacks who've actually been
13:41able to win the damn thing.
13:42Exactly.
13:42Exactly.
13:43Right.
13:43And, uh, was looking at something recently from Stafford and he was kind of talking about
13:48his success.
13:49And one of the last things he said was, I'm super blessed to be paired with one of the
13:55best play callers in the NFL.
13:57That really, really helps me perform at my best.
14:02Nobody ever says that about Matt Stafford.
14:05Right.
14:05Nobody ever says, Hey, but, but Sean McVay, Sean McVay concoction of Sean McVay, Matt Stafford
14:12hadn't even won, uh, Silverado Resort Tournament champion before he was paired with Sean McVay.
14:21He'd won a couple of playoff games in Detroit.
14:23Ah, maybe one, maybe one, but there was nothing to speak of.
14:29Um, so I don't know.
14:31That's that to me, that's all part of it.
14:33I'm not like, I don't know.
14:35Have I ever stood on a table here in this room and told you that Brock Purdy must absolutely
14:40have to be on your top 10 list?
14:42No.
14:42Like, I'm not offended if he's 11 or 12 or, or, or whatever.
14:48Um, but if anybody thinks that this list somehow is like a mic drop in, in the larger conversation
14:56that we've been having over the last three or four years, I just, I don't, I don't feel
15:01that it is.
15:02I don't feel that way at all.
15:04No.
15:05I mean, even the company he's with in the honorable mention category, pretty damn good quarterbacks.
15:09Yeah.
15:10You've got a Superbowl winner in there and, uh, just confirming Matthew Stafford, Oh,
15:15and three in Detroit in the playoffs.
15:17So in fact, zero, zero playoff wins, three births and three losses.
15:21And so this is where this conversation, and I'm going to mention this between now and the
15:27end of my days on radio, we oversimplify this conversation like the quarterback rankings.
15:34And again, the quarterback tears, Mike Sando.
15:37I love it.
15:37If Patrick Mahomes didn't have Andy Reed, if Brock Purdy didn't have Kyle Shanahan, if
15:43Matthew Stafford never got to be a Ram with Sean McVay, are they going to be as good?
15:50Absolutely not.
15:51It doesn't mean that they're not talented.
15:52And you could look at any quarterback in a bad situation and see that, yeah, it's not
15:58going to be as good.
15:59And I think about Trevor Lawrence, where he finally now has some stability and an offensive
16:05coordinator who I think is going to be pretty good.
16:08And same thing with Caleb Williams.
16:09He got an offensive minded head coach.
16:11And how much better did he get last year?
16:14Although Caleb Williams was also, I mean, to me, the Chicago Bears are my number one team
16:21this year that is primed for a fallback because I just don't think that they're sustainable.
16:27I don't think the way they played football last year was sustainable.
16:30Being heroic late in the fourth quarter is a wonderful characteristic for a quarterback.
16:35But that's not a way to build a team, I don't think.
16:39You know, we watched the Kansas City Chiefs be that team the year before, and they couldn't
16:42even make the playoffs last year.
16:44Will that happen to the Bears?
16:46I don't know.
16:46I think they're probably in, if the Niners division is not the hardest division in football,
16:53then the NFC North is.
16:56I think all four of those teams are viable.
16:59I don't know exactly what the Vikings are going to have to offer, but that's like four
17:02real teams in that division.
17:04So that's going to be very, very hard for the Bears to repeat and win the division this
17:10year.
17:10No doubt.
17:11I just, I look at last year and you had New England and Chicago both go worst to first
17:17and looking at the history of the NFL, since they expanded to eight divisions almost every
17:22year, two years ago, no team did it, but it's usually about one team a year will go from
17:28last in the division to first in the division.
17:31And I wonder just as a mid-July take who you think it might be among the New York Jets,
17:37three and 14, Cleveland went five and 12.
17:40They were worst.
17:41The Titans were three and 14.
17:43The Raiders.
17:45The Raiders.
17:45Okay.
17:46Or the Giants, four and 13.
17:49The Lions at nine and eight, I guess technically were last in that division.
17:54The Saints at six and 11 or the Cardinals at three and 14.
17:58Feels like the Giants are the easy choice.
18:00Oh, no, I think the Lions are the easy choice to go worst to first.
18:03Yeah.
18:04Okay.
18:04Yeah.
18:05And actually I'm going to say the New Orleans Saints would be my second pick.
18:10Oh, really?
18:10Yeah.
18:10Not because I think the Saints are going to be amazing, but I think they're viable.
18:13And I think that division is completely and always gettable.
18:17Like nobody's good there.
18:19Those would be my first two answers.
18:20Okay.
18:21The Giants, look, they've got a good coach now, and they've got an up-and-coming quarterback
18:27who, if he can stay out of the news, you know, seems like he can throw the football.
18:31I like some of the free agent signings that they've had.
18:34They have a good defense, but that's going to, like they're going to vault over the Eagles.
18:41Maybe.
18:42I don't think it's unthinkable.
18:44I'll make that my third choice.
18:45Yeah.
18:45The AFC ones all sound ridiculous.
18:49Those all sound ridiculous.
18:50Yeah.
18:51I cannot wrap my head around any of those four, even making the playoffs this year.
18:55Cleveland is the one where, I mean, if you still had Miles Garrett, I don't even know
18:59who their quarterback is going to be.
19:01And that thing is a constant revolving door.
19:04It might be Deshaun Watson.
19:04It might be.
19:05And, you know, the Jets, I'm pulling for them because my old neighbor, my buddy is on the
19:10staff.
19:10And Aaron Glenn, I mean, he might be, he probably is the favorite to be first coach fired, which
19:15I think is unfair because that roster still is under construction.
19:19The Titans at three and 14, they were a full 10 games worse than Jacksonville last year.
19:24And the Raiders, God love them.
19:26I still think that that thing is a couple of years away from being a couple of years away.
19:30Yeah.
19:31Yeah.
19:31That just doesn't, I mean, and just the competition that each of them have.
19:35Yeah.
19:36Love Robert Sala.
19:37We'll see.
19:38That division could be gettable.
19:39Nobody feels ready there.
19:41Nobody feels ready in one of those four teams.
19:43But the NFC ones outside of the Cardinals all feel like they could play some football this
19:50year.
19:50Yeah.
19:50Those three teams.
19:51I wonder about New Orleans and, you know, maybe you're higher on Tyler Shuck than I am.
19:56He didn't look bad.
19:57No.
19:57Down the stretch.
19:58He didn't look bad.
19:59Yeah.
19:59And I haven't poured through the schedules as far as, you know, who plays whom and when.
20:04But, you know, you get that last place schedule and you do have some of those easier crossovers.
20:09And that's where I'm a little bit higher on the 49ers than I otherwise would be because
20:14you get that third place schedule this year.
20:16I mean, the New Orleans Saints get a last place schedule and their record looks so awful.
20:21They finished two games out of first place.
20:23Right.
20:25Two games.
20:26That's all.
20:26That's all it took.
20:28So anyway, yeah, that's that's kind of fun to to look at.
20:32But, you know, larger point that we're talking about with this whole quarterback thing and
20:38where Brock fits in to the whole situation and and and some of the other quarterbacks.
20:44I don't know, man.
20:46I just I know that you've often said what ends the draftism thing is a Super Bowl victory.
20:53And I just don't think I even buy that.
20:57And my latest example will be Sam Darnold.
20:59He won a Super Bowl and I don't think anybody's necessarily like, yep, that's the guy.
21:06Now you can see like when I look at this list and you can put Brock wherever you want.
21:10You put him 11th, 8th, 10th, 12th.
21:13It's somewhere in there.
21:15But you can see draftism all over it.
21:19Here's how I would define draftism as far as a list like this.
21:23If you're drafted late, you have to go so over the top in proving yourself that it takes time.
21:32We need to see this four, five, six, seven, eight, nine times before we buy it.
21:39But if you're drafted early, all it takes about six or seven games.
21:45Like, what are Drake May and Caleb Williams doing on this list?
21:49What are they doing here?
21:51Caleb Williams has played for two years.
21:53Yep.
21:54And one of them wasn't good.
21:56And Drake May has played one season.
21:59And sure, he went to the Super Bowl and I believe he belongs on the list.
22:03I'm a really, really big supporter of Drake May.
22:05I think Caleb Williams and Drake May both going to be really good.
22:08But what is it that if you're drafted in the first round, if you look good immediately, it's over.
22:18We buy it.
22:19Done.
22:20Easy to believe.
22:21Confirmation bias, right?
22:22Because we all saw him in college and some of these guys won the Heisman and then they get drafted
22:28very highly and they go out and they have success.
22:30It's like, yeah, this is what we expected.
22:33None of us watched Iowa State.
22:34I don't know if I ever even saw Brock Purdy in college, let alone knew what Brock Purdy was.
22:41And then he gets drafted as an afterthought.
22:44No Mr. Irrelevant ever really does anything, let alone quarterbacks.
22:48And then he does all that he does.
22:49And so easier for us to be believers in Brock because we see it.
22:53But for the nation at large, it's Trent Williams and Shanahan and Fred Warner and Bosa and Kittle.
23:01Like, yeah, and then maybe Brock.
