00:00We're going to check in now with AccuWeather correspondent Leslie Hudson.
00:03Leslie's joining us now from Virginia Beach.
00:05And Leslie, you already have some impacts out there, so how's it going?
00:13Yeah, Jeff, it has been an onslaught of the winds and some periodic rain and that inundation,
00:20which started yesterday here in the Virginia Beach, Hampton Roads area.
00:24And as Anna mentioned, some of the worst of that flooding is expected in that next high-tide cycle tonight
00:31and lasting into Thursday morning.
00:33So we saw a fair amount of flooding here in the Virginia Beach area.
00:38And as we head through today, we're expecting, and tonight, we're expecting that to only increase.
00:43So it's been kind of an appetizer, if you will, of the main event, which is expected to happen later
00:49tonight.
00:50So let's show you some video first, and then we'll talk about the conditions behind me.
00:54We went into Hampton Roads today, which is about 30 miles inland from here in Virginia Beach.
01:00So when we get these tidal flooding conditions, they start at the coast and then move inland.
01:07It takes about an hour to 90 minutes for that water to get into those low-lying areas
01:11in these very popular parts of Norfolk, Virginia, including Gantt Park and also The Hague
01:18and the museum, the Chrysler Museum, which really was a mess this morning.
01:23We saw car after car stalled out, folks trying to drive around in that mess.
01:29And, of course, when you mix water with an engine, you're not going to be making lemonade.
01:33We talked to one resident whose wife tried, in earnest, to make a morning commute today
01:39and underestimated the roads.
01:41And here's what he had to say about that.
01:44I've been here for about 30 years now.
01:45We've pretty much had maybe one bad hurricane and a couple other little things.
01:50But we get to the northeaster usually at least a couple times a year.
01:53Those coastal systems develop.
01:55And the way the shoreline and everything is situated, those floodwaters,
02:01when that onshore wind comes, it just pushes them up, especially in the low-lying areas.
02:11And that is the exact concern that the officials here in this area have.
02:17You know, what will the next tide cycle bring tonight?
02:20And that has kept folks, these city planners, as well as the Norfolk Water Management District,
02:27the Storm Management District, they have been out assessing these low-lying areas,
02:31which, again, have been fairly isolated.
02:34But when you get into those pockets, there are two to three feet of standing water.
02:38And because that water has not been able to escape in many cases,
02:42and it kind of got capped there in some of those spots in Norfolk,
02:46then it's going to get exacerbated when this next tide cycle comes in.
02:50And it will add to that increasing water.
02:53We also have king tides, which will also give a little boost there for that astronomical tide.
02:58And we're in a very strong El Nino pattern, all of those coming together to produce
03:03some very serious traffic and flooding conditions in that region.
03:08And the high tide, by the way, here in this region should start to peak around 745 tonight
03:13and then linger for several hours and then, of course, another round tomorrow.
03:17Real quick, back out live, the winds here have been steady around 30, 25 to 30 miles an hour,
03:23gale force warnings offshore, and, of course, high surf advisories.
03:26Lots of folks staying in today, just a real raw day here along Virginia Beach.
