00:00What areas have your greatest concern when it comes to coastal flooding?
00:05Well, what's going to happen with this, we're going to get an extended period of stiff northeast winds.
00:10As you talked about, there can be 30, 40, 50 mile an hour gusts and a steady wind to 15
00:16to 25 miles an hour.
00:17And that's going to push a lot of water from the Atlantic back toward the Chesapeake Bay, toward the tidal
00:22rivers.
00:22That's our greatest concern right now from northeastern North Carolina to the lower half, let's say, of the Chesapeake Bay,
00:29especially the western end is where most of the problems are going to be.
00:33And we're probably looking at tides averaging three to four feet above normal.
00:39Some spots in there, tides can be six feet above normal because we have the lunar effect going on on
00:46top of the developing storm situation.
00:50Absolutely. And you mentioned some regions.
00:52So why are areas like southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina especially vulnerable with this setup?
00:59And as you speak, we're going to be looking at just those future wind gusts and that persistent northeast wind.
01:05Yeah, with that wind direction, the coastline tends to trap the water in.
01:09And what will happen is with the wind blowing, blowing on the water, the water tends to pile up western
01:17and southwestern shoreline with the northeast wind.
01:19So the water can't escape like it normally does.
01:22So it starts to build up.
01:23Then you have the tide cycle on top of it.
01:25Then you have some fresh water, you know, the rain coming in, too, which is going to add to the
01:30flooding effect.
01:31So it's going to be a big problem.
01:33I think folks in this area should treat this like a strong nor'easter, even though the nor'easter part
01:39of the storm is not coming till a couple of days later up near New England.
01:43This storm is effectively going to behave like a strong nor'easter or perhaps even approaching tropical storm is going
01:50to be kind of heading toward the Chesapeake Bay.
01:52In this case, though, the storm is going to be farther out, but the effects are going to be there.
01:56So you need to make some preparations if you're prone to getting flooding with this thing when you have high
02:03tides, especially astronomical tides, especially when there's a storm going on with the astronomical tides.
02:09You get tides three to four feet above normal, you're going to get flooding on some of the streets.
02:13So you've got to watch where you park your car.
02:15If you have a boat out there, there's a risk of that boat getting damaged with the tide cycles coming
02:21in, the high tide cycles.
02:23And in some cases, the boats could even break free.
02:27So the time to prepare is now.
02:29You don't want to wait until Wednesday when this thing is really starting to ramp up.
02:32And it kind of looks like this thing is going to go on in southeast Virginia, northeast North Carolina, the
02:37lower part of the Delmarva, it seems, probably into Thursday and maybe even part of Friday before the worst conditions
02:45shift farther north.
02:46escalate.
02:46Donc, in the next phase.
02:47escalate on the wall.
